The 49ers debuted their new alternate uniform on Thursday and the verdict from most of the masses are mixed.
Deadspin says they suck.
I'll just say that black used to be cool before everybody in the world made it a point to try to become hip and go to black simply for the sake of going to black.
In the NFL, there's only one black uniform that really, really looks cool.
That said, I'm in the minority. I think the alternate jersey looks cool. Maybe I'm not that old school after all.

Do not need Deadspin to tell me they suck because THEY SUCK!!! Check out Wilbon's rant on Pardon the Interruption. Couldn't say it better.
ReplyDeleteCould you provide a link?
ReplyDeleteBecause they DO suck. Don't mess with a classic look. Remember when they tried to change the helmet logo to say "49ers" a few years back? But I understand--it's all about the Almighty Dollar and the bandwagon fans who think "ooh SHINY" and couldn't tell you who John Brodie was if you held a gun to their head.
ReplyDeleteI, too, thought of that "new" helmet that they thankfully scrapped (before it saw the light of day) back in the early '90s. These black uniforms are about as abysmal.
DeleteWhen every team was launching a black uniform a decade ago it wasn't cool.
ReplyDeleteIt's less cool now.
Once again I was waaay ahead of the curve. Rich you and your readers read on this here blog how many times I said the 49er uniforms in red and gold looked like show tune costumes "the musical". I could see the embarrassment Harbaugh had at the very idea he would wear fire engine red and gold. That's Beach Blanket Babylon quality.
ReplyDeleteAlso- name any other bay area sports writer who ever had the guts to say the truth.
Once again, just me. And you read it here.
YORK'S DORKS.. It shows all you need to do is hit the genetic lottery to run an NFL team.. No other qualities needed.
ReplyDeleteIf you can't beat the Raiders, I guess your next option is to look like them. Raiders!
ReplyDeleteJust Win Baby, Ha!
DeleteThe Raiders are 50-110 in the last 10 seasons, and 11-37 in the last 3. Some teams may want to dress like the Raiders, but no team wants to play like them!
so who cares what uniforms the Santa Clara NFL franchise wear?
ReplyDeletethe "49ers" ARE DEAD TO ME!
These Uni's have Jed York's finger prints ALL over them, and they are butt ugly?! Why mess with one of the all time classic uniforms in the NFL?! I give the Raiders all the props, they "never" F with their uniforms.
ReplyDeleteJust WIn Baby! The Silver & Black!!
ReplyDeleteThe sainted Bill Walsh must be spinning in his grave considering what has happened the Forty Niners in recent years. Very sad.
ReplyDeletePretty awful. Hopefully, they can announce to fans when they'll wear those uniforms....so I don't get caught going to one of those games.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand the infatuation of watching steroided-out sweaty men in spandex....Unless that's your "Thing."
ReplyDelete9;12 PM..Uhmmm....Ahhh...never mind.
DeleteI think they're appropriate for a team from ...well, uh.. Santa Clara.
ReplyDeleteNo, they are now the Silicon Valley 49ers. Next step is for someone to step up and make the York's an offer they can't refuse and send their worthless asses back to Ohio. San Francisco is the city that sucks, the home of goofy runs, stupid parades and parking problems. Nobody cares!! The South Bay is the future.
Delete10:58,
DeleteGoofy runs, stupid parades, parking problems, the #1 ranked baseball park in the country, and the MLB team that has won three out of the last five World Series.
I don't think the York's are welcome back in Ohio; not after they sent the previous coach packing to their collegiate nemesis.
DeleteThe Giants wanted to move to the South Bay and blew it. Now they are stuck and have to draw their fans from Silicon Valley to survive in parking problem land. If they had any balls, they would let a team move to the South Bay. They will not and they stink. By the way, who is in last place??
DeleteI'm not sure I understand your question, but I'm pretty sure the Giants are not in last place.
DeleteAlso, they're such a successful franchise that their fans come from all over the region, not from just one area. Besides, they're centrally-located now. South Bay would be somewhat tougher for Sacramento/East Bay, or Marin fans. Even if there are parking issues, it would be faster for them to park at AT&T rather than have to drive a lot further.
No, I mean a team based in the South Bay. To your point, that would open up the opportunity for fans in Santa Cruz, Monterrey, Morgan Hill and Gilroy to get to games reasonably. As it is they are hours away from AT&T. What are the Giants afraid of, competition? The Giants pulled themselves one game out of last place after sweeping the Angels.
DeleteThen I take it we won't be seeing you at the ballpark anytime soon (please?)
DeleteAnd I'm NOT on your lawn.
Nah - they suck. The numbers need a liner of white and gold to offset the red from the black. And even then. That said - when I heard alternate unis, I figured they would go with the gold.
ReplyDeleteThose unis are horrible. And the best looking black uniform is Pittsburgh Steelers home ones.
ReplyDeleteI knew when wonder boy Jed York the Dork took over the Whiners would go into Disarray.
ReplyDeleteThose uniforms are just another pathetic attempt at selling more product.
Since he took over the 49ers they have been in the Super Bowl and the NFC Championship 3 times. Not bad for 5 years as CEO.
DeleteYou might be thinking of his father's tenure, (moving to Santa Clara, Mariucci, Nolan, Singletary, Erickson).
Young guys playing the sport today could care less about tradition. They're looking for glitz and glamour and money and aren't about to argue with those who are signing the pay checks. The game is not what it once was, even though the athletes today are better than ever. No loyalty, too much media cynicism, and owners who are not community oriented and seem completely out of touch on important social issues.
ReplyDeleteBy "alternate" uniforms, do they mean the colors used at AWAY games?
ReplyDeleteIf not, that black is going to be pretty miserable in Levi Stadium, which is said to be too hot, already.
Perhaps York was impressed with Stanford's alternate black and cardinal uniforms, hence the similar look.
ReplyDeleteMaybe they are Samford colors that York mistook for Stanford colors.
DeletePerfect for a college-level team playing in a Midwestern stadium. So what's the problem here?
ReplyDeleteI'm cool with the whole uniform except for those white knee socks. They serve no purpose and stick out too much. But big woop, I'm not losing sleep over it.
ReplyDeleteJed York is such a joke.
ReplyDeleteIf he didn't have all those millions, I doubt if he could get a job or a career.
