  1. Hi Rich,

I really miss the old KGO and especially Jim Dunbar and Ted Wygant in the morning. I was a local delivery driver back when they were on the air and had to pull over many times laughing so hard because I couldn't see. Any idea what they're up to now?

Save a turkey leg for me...

  2. Jim Dunbar is on the peninsula enjoying retirement and Ted Wygant doing the same in Oregon. You laughed so hard because both Ted and Jim were genuine and original --a far cry from the current gruesome twosome: giggler and "pipes" man.

  3. KRON's people seem to come and go so often these days. There was an afternoon anchor just a few years ago with Pam Moore and Jacqueline Bennett. She did the brief Q&A segment with Radnich near the end of the broadcast. She left the air with little or no notice and the last I saw she was doing one of their infomercial segments. I can't recall her name but I wonder if you know what happened to her.

    1. I remember the segment and forgot the name of the person you're talking about which given the state of KRON is not unusual.

I noticed that Kristen Sze isn't wearing a wedding ring? Hear anything?

    3. Not a peep, but that doesn't mean anything. Maybe she's auditioning again.

    1. No.

She's shied away from the first day I put the challenge out and I don't expect her to reply let alone accept.

  5. Has Don Knapp retired? I haven't seen him on the air in awhile, and his bio was removed from the PIX site.

    1. I believe he has retired although KPIX won't say. Classy of them to just remove one of the Bay Area's most respected TV reporters and be mum about his status.

  6. Rich, I was wondering if you had any followup on "backlash" at KRON from the Erica Kato firing or the bottom line ticker situation that happened right afterwards, I (along with others) complained to General Media and FCC. Both seem to have brushed the situations under the rug. Thus I thought I would ask if your insiders have any updates?

    1. That's what they do. They hope with time that things just go away. So far, they're OK but eventually something will stick and won't go away.

    3. 2:11....Yeah....not really.

  9. How many hours a day and how many days a week does John Bachelor broadcast live? KGO runs 30+ hours a week of him (as do many other Cumulus stations)! I assume some if it has to be re-runs...

    1. Think DR Gene Scott. He'll soon be on 24 hours a day and there could be 20 years or more time difference between segments.

      Delete
    2. Only in NYC and other stations that carry the show live. KGO doesn't carry it live, tape-delayed and also on Sunday nigh, taped of course.

      Delete
    3. 11:07 but Dr. Scott was so ridiculously entertaining those 24 hours! I miss the loon; he was a unique character.

      Delete
    4. He was also ridiculously intelligent! Remembered by many as much a teacher as an entertainer, he parlayed an eccentric penchant for education into an egocentric communications empire. Whether one followed his style or his story, however, he was the first religious broadcaster to cover the globe via satellite, shortwave, and Internet media. By 1992, his network was available to 180 countries in 4 languages.

For those who would like to visit, Dr. Scott's final resting place is located at beautiful Sunset Mausoleum (up the hill from separate Sunset View Cemetery) in El Cerrito. He not only "lives" there but also benefited from a sizable property investment even before his passing. "NOW GET ON THE TELEPHONE!"

      Delete
    5. 11:30 "God's Angry Man" is a great documentary about Gene Scott. It was directed by Werner Herzog and is on You Tube.

I STILL have "I Wanna Know" by the fabulous gospel quartet The Statesmen running through my head!

      Delete
    6. Yes, April 27 @ 11:30 PM. He purchased a large interest in Sunset Mausoleum years before his 2005 demise. Dr. Scott rests peacefully in "The Scott Room" with his predeceased parents and infant siblings, flanked by flowers and photos. The polished marble entrance welcomes any visitor inside the stained-glass-windowed memorial structure, apart from but related to other areas of the stately building. Though distinguished even in death, why the Scotts chose this Contra Costa County landmark for their family plot remains unclear.

  10. When you do meet the local sports talk show hosts, are they in person as arrogant, selfish and obnoxious as they seem on the radio or tv? Do they flaunt the Rolex?
Are any of them worth a damn?

    ReplyDelete

    1. In the Bay Area most of them are nice, real and genuine. There's always one though...

      Delete
    2. Just one? You're being kind. I can think of one, maybe two, on that "sports leader" waste of bandwidth. I think they work together. One doesn't hesitate to let anyone know he went to the Golden Dome school and other thinks he's so cool...

    3. Translation of Stan's question: I hate Gary Radnich! I blame him for my miserable life!

  11. I'm still upset that KPIX let Lawrence Karnow go in favor of Roberta Gonzales. KRON has had a revolving door of Weathercasters since Jackie Bennett left plus KGO's Spencer Christian will be 68 in July and should definitely consider retirement. Any chance KRON or KGO might consider hiring Karnow for their lead weathercaster?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. To answer your first question, yes, hiring new weather forecasters, not out of the question. I'm not so sure Karnow is at the top of the list, maybe on the weekend, but not Monday-Friday.

      Delete
    2. Two questions if I may; #1. Why is Spencer Christian still working at age 68?
Does he have numerous ex-wives & baby Mamas, or did he too get swindled by Bernie Madoff?

#2. I'm learning about making seafood at home. In your opinion, what cheese goes best with Salmon, Provolone, Swiss or Cheddar?

      Delete
    3. 1. Spencer Christian is still working (as of now)--I incorrectly wrote that both he and Cheryl Jennings would be gone at the end of last year. Jennings is also in her late 60's--with regard to Spencer I still like him but I'm not so sure ABC has patience with a guy making $300K...#2: If the salmon is that good don't pair it with ANY cheese. Maybe a rice pilaf and salad.

      Delete
    4. I don't know why some folks are obsessed with age and when they think other people should retire. For example, I can think of three broadcasters (in the L.A. market) who worked well into their 70s and beyond and loved what they were doing. Hal Fishman, the respected television anchor, kept on working until shortly before his death at 75. Another popular anchor, Jerry Dunphy, worked until he died at age 80. And Stan Chambers, an iconic television reporter for several decades worked until he retired at 87.

And as far as national broadcasters are concerned, let's not forget Mike Wallace who worked until the age of 92. And recently retired Barbara Walters continues to be active at 85.

So if you still have the desire to work and love the business and what you're doing, then why not continue with that effort.

    5. Re: anon a few posts up, Spencer Christian had an expensive wine and casino habit, along with a tax problem. Perhaps they are no longer problems.

  13. KFOG seems to have dropped their HD2 channel in the last couple of months. I really liked it due to fewer commercials etc. At least with the FM multicast you don't have to pay for the bandwidth. Do you see any future in FM radio multicasting or do you think internet streaming has just overcome the whole HD radio technology thing?

    1. I think the Ibiquity system is on the way out like the 8-track cartridge. I've seen quite a few stations drop their HD2, etc channels, probably due to only a few radios now include the "HD Radio" thing.

  15. When (next year, it is hoped) is the "White House Correspondents' Dinner" going to be repackaged and revitalized? The producers at C-SPAN, much less CEO Brian Lamb, must have second or third thoughts about their commitment to televising this annual 4-hour spectacle.

Granted that C-SPAN itself does not produce the fiasco. Do they not cringe, however, at the conflict of interest re their dedication to the vestiges of "true" broadcast journalism and the cozy relationship displayed between the press, Hollywood celebrities, and inside-the-beltway politicians?

On second thought, perhaps the disgraceful exhibition of conspicuous consumption against the backdrop of tasteless entertainment and awarding scholarships to would-be journalists may aptly illustrate one of C-SPAN's mottoes: "A public service offered by private enterprise."

Do you, Rich, every consider attending this "gala" by invitation or otherwise?

  18. Just heard KGO announcing a new "money program". Starting this Saturday at 4:00 pm following Michael Finney. No more Chef? yea...I guess, but not sure about another money program. How about Pat Thurston?

    1. That show is probably only one hour, so they're cutting Michael Finney short by an hour.

    2. This past Saturday the chef was out and in his place was none other than Chip Franklin! Chip extolled the extent of his food knowledge by saying he had dined at a few fine restaurants in his life. That'd be like me saying I am a car expert because I had the oil change done at the BMW dealership for years. Just when you think KGO can't get any lower they find another lower rung.

  19. Rich! it would be so great to have a museum for the Golden Age of SF radio!
is there any hope for that either brick & mortar or virtual? do archives exist at
some stations? do listeners have recordings that could be shared on the web?
how great it would be to hear those golden voices again,,,what if we could hear
them on demand! is there any hope?

    1. Try the California Historical Radio Society (CHRS) http://www.californiahistoricalradio.com/
They're a good bunch of local people dedicated to radio history. The museum was in the old KRE building until ICBC checked out of radio. They're refurbishing a new old facility in Alameda I believe.

  20. What became of those beautiful "Circle 7" decorative lamps outside the entrance of the old KGO facility on Golden Gate Avenue? If they turn up on eBay I'm making a bid for them. Unless Ray Tannehill beats me to them.

  21. Hmm forty- three questions and answers and I still can't get an answer to who benefits from the obnoxious screaming lady car commercials. The station? People click to another station. The advertising company? People develop a deep, undying hatred for the company. So, what's the rationale? Who benefits?

    1. Thank you for saying something about the shrieking woman commercials. I counted 11 times the commercials (there are two now) were run on 910 in 1 hour. Practically one after the other. The worst commercials ever, yet they keep playing as if on an infinite loop. Give me Kars for Kids anytime. At least it's short.

  22. This past weekend, sometime between 8-9 AM, Claudine Wong of KICU had to apologize something "very inappropriate" they showed during the previous news segment. I missed the story. Have you heard anytning about that?

  23. It's about 9:45 and listening to that horrid Drex on KGOne! (Why I must be crazy!)

On such an important news day with the Baltimore riots and Nepal earthquake, Dred talks about Apple watches, the movies Furious 7 & Paul Blart, men & bathroom use!

  25. Rich: just curious if you have listened to any of Karel's webcasts? I've listened to just a couple here and there out of curiosity myself, and have to admit he sounds more like his old broadcast-self with more focus on issues and less woe-is-me. Also, not having callers to cut off or be rude to also seems to have made a big difference in how he comes across. (Again, The least in the very few that I've heard.)

    ReplyDelete
  26. Ok, if Rich won't explain the rationale behind the screaming lady car commercials to me, is there anyone out there who will? (People switch stations and hate the company. Who benefits?)

    1. 1:13AM I too wish I could explain it. I have never heard somebody say that they like those spots. When events defy logic, sometimes, you must use illogic;
for example. It would not surprise me one day to find out that the programming decision to shower the Bay Area with those crappy commercials, was made and is being made by somebody who was in some manner REJECTED by either the media insiders or by Bay Area viewers.

Whoever this hypothetic person is, they have never gotten over the fact that their ideas and/or their individual persona never became popular and was REJECTED. This is somebody taking a sadisitic delight in putting it to the Bay
Area, particularly those who listen to AM Terrestrial Radio.
That is my take on it. Otherwise, it makes no sense at all.

  27. Regarding the "screaming lady" car commercials, and Kars 4 Kids, and other obnoxious and overplayed spots: They don't get radio. They don't understand advertising. They were told that if their ad stands out, it will get noticed; it's a "no such thing as bad publicity" kind of idea... and they're WRONG. Annoying anyone and everyone who comes in contact with your advertising has NOT proven to be a beneficial way to sell, at least in radio. Memorable, yes; predictable and familiar, yes; but engender the kind of hostility voiced on this forum? NO.

FWIW, lots of people do things wrong in broadcasting these days. The Dickeys' entire philosophy of how to sell radio is wrong -- but these ads fit into that mold just fine: They believe that there is an infinite pool of fresh new audience, that nobody listens to anything for more than 10 minutes at a time, that they surf the dial relentlessly. This is why Prevogen ads on KSFO and KGO are only 25-minutes long, and play TWICE during the sponsored hour, and repeat each week; they think they will get more new listeners with each repeat, and that "only a few diehards" will even notice. The Dickeys don't believe that anyone is faithful to their radio stations, or even cares; that's why none of the Cumulus stations even have bumper stickers any more. Loyal listeners and people who seek out programs are worthless anomalies to these people; they sell advertisers on the idea that if they play obnoxious ads often enough, lots of people will know about them because they'll catch more of them as they shuffle on thru.

Does that help? It reminds me of the magazine subscription cards we used to get in college; they would tuck one in every single textbook, they would tuck more of them inside the bag at checkout, and they would send them to us in the mail using the schools' enrollment list. Apparently, they believe that if we received their crappy offer 100 times, we'd be more likely to buy than if we only received it once or twice. They were wrong, too.

  28. Enough bullcrap. Let's cut to the chase. Pacquiao vs Mayweather.
No way I'm spending $100 for a fight that should've happened 5 years ago. I'll settle for the replay or a pirated broadcast. Your thoughts and predictions?
