KRON Technical Quagmire At New Place; Ed Cavagnaro Is Ready To Call It Quits At KCBS; A Few Sunday Coffee Notes

 SUNDAY COFFEE NOTES

After over a month housed in its new Embarcadero studios at the ABC building at 900 Front, KRON's myriad of technical and operational issues has overtaken the station sending it into the abyss.

For starters, the lighting on the news set is a disaster. It's either too bright or too dark. For some reason, they can't get it right and it not only blemishes the anchors but makes them look literally awful.

Then there's the daily electronic glitches--with anchors talking over one another and coming back from commercial spots, already talking. It's uncomfortable to watch even if it happens to be KRON whose personnel deserves better.

There are those that blame the new building as the culprit. I'll defer to the experts because I have no idea but most of the people I've spoken to say the new building is not to blame, merely an excuse. Whatever is the case, KRON and Media General, (it's corporate owner), has to get this figured out and instantly --if it continues then it only further erodes what little relevance KRON has in the eyes of Bay Area viewers.

*Indeed, after 38 years at KCBS--26 as News Director, Ed Cavagnaro will call it quits in April. We wish him all the best in his new life every 15 and 45 years.

*The late-night circus at KGO Radio performed a new low--a taped, ridiculously unintentionally funny "show" from the entertainer who kept interviewing some moron about "last night's State-of-the-Union" speech only the SOTU speech was on Tuesday night. The entertainer needs a better editor...among other things.

  1. So. KGO knocked an hour off of Angie's time to broadcast a "speciality program," I.e., infommercials this morning,

There is something seriously wrong with Cumulus. It gets lower and lower by the day. Why bring Angie in, only to mistreat her? I bet the Dickey brothers pulled off butterfly wings as children.

  3. I listened to part of Karel's last half hour, and he mentioned it being Saturday night at least twice. Probably said "keeping it live and local" as well, as he uses it as a tagline. Funny that even when Karel's shows are live, there is a lot that it is pre-recorded. Yes, a lot of shows play pre-recorded interviews. But, Karel tries to play it off like the interviewee is present, by switching back to a live bit. Karel does not seem to realize the sound of his voice changes drastically. Very amateurish.

  4. Disney should have made them change the call sign letters in the deal when they sold WABC,KGO and KABC to Cumulus.

  5. I caught some of Angie's show, some of Copelands show. They make sense to me. I like them. We need more of them.
Compare them to the backwoods thinking of local sports radio. That's just plain embarrassing.

  6. I believe the owners of KGO should change their corporate name to
The Limbo Group LLC. It would explain the phrase in the song of the
same title "How Low Can You Go?"

  7. We are going to miss Ed Cavagnaro and are nervous about what the future holds. Hopefully they don't replace him with somebody stupid or, worse, young.

    1. I'm guessing Ed Cavagnaro was in his 20's when he started at KCBS.

  8. I'm not privy to KRON's tech setup but I was a sound mixer for 35 years, some in news both local and network and I can tell you local news is the toughest show on television and I would excuse tech glitches as teething problems.

  9. Fox is putting its fingerprint on Ch2. Just saw a new promo. The copy says "we're up early, we're up for you". Funny, that's exactly the same line KRON has been using for a month. Sad when big time KTVU has to steal lines from the likes of KRON
