The Best and Worst Bay Area TV News 2014

BEST TV Newscast: KGO's Dan Ashley solo performance, (mostly) on KOFY TV Channel 20.

BEST 6PM Newscast: KGO-TV: Ashley and Ama Daetz straightforward and just enough give and take.

BEST 10 PM Newscast: KTVU's Fox-impaired "10 O'clock" News has taken a hit but it still overall pretty good --can we do less weather teases?

WORST Newscast: the absolute worst-ever 23 minutes of wasted air and complete buffoonery: KPIX's train-wreck dreck: "Night Beat". What a crock of shit. A complete waste, gimmicky, phony, dreadful, forced and disaster-a-minute: GAME OFF!

BEST Investigative reporter: Dan Noyes/KGO-TV

WORST Investigative Reporter: Tony Kovaleski/KNTV

WORST new concept: Tie-less sportsguys and weatherman on Nightbeat? Please PIX

BEST SPORTSCAST: Gary Radnich 6 PM solo: he's still got it on TV; 5-6 minutes of genuinely funny, (sometimes), cohesive sports news and a few comments.

BEST Tightly-written sportscast: Mark Ibanez' two-minute drill on KTVU at 10 PM.

WORST Sportscast: The GAME ON travesty on PIX's KBCW--quick, get a fire-extinguisher!

BEST Morning Weather: Hands down Steve Paulsen on KTVU. Sometimes robotic but still A-Rate and genuine to the max.

WORST Morning News Anchor: Tori Campbell/KTVU: The Ice Princess.

BEST Morning News Anchor: Frank Mallicoat: Who knew he had a sense of humor? Still hasn't taken away the sting of losing Kessler and Kohara but oh well.

WORST NEW Anchor: Veronica De La Cruz/KPIX: Much a buzz at the start. Friendly, smart and charming turns to phony, deceiving and disingenuous. And please: get the hair thing settled one way or the other, GAME OFF!

Rich, you posted this just so Stan can have some spank material for New Years Eve!

    2. Hey Raddie said he could work Rich tossing him a bone once. I guess this time he tossed Richie the whole Raddie family leftover turkey bones..

Start with botox and collagen and go from there.

  3. Watched a few minutes of Kate T Scott on CSNBA, and a few minutes was all I could handle. What a windbag!

    Nope, Darya.

For ice princess, I'd go with Elizabeth Cook.

  5. I heartily agree with your evaluation of Dan Noyes, he's great. The one thing that has puzzled me about him is why we see him on the air so seldom. It seems like he only shows up with a story every couple of weeks. Maybe he's a one-man band for the stuff that he does and that's probably okay. It just seems a waste to me why such a great reporter isn't used on the air more. Maybe he needs more staff to work with him, it just seems like that KGO is not getting all the bang for the buck that they could out of him. Or is there some undercurrent that's resulted in his low on-the-air profile?

  6. Good selections, and no doubt most of them try their best.

But bottom line: It's all mediocrity.

  7. Why all the hate for Veronica De La Cruz all of the sudden?

    1. I would much rather listen to her give the news than Elizabeth Cook.

    2. Rich's infatuation with her soured once she showed up for work.

    3. Good point that, 10:58. He adored her early on.

Maybe she wouldn't succumb to his wily ways during an intimate tête-à-tête at la Joynt de tommy?

    4. Do not know. I like her. Wish these idiots would just watch another newscast if they do not like her and quit their petty bitching.

  8. Rich I'm listening to David Weintraub in for Ed Baxter right now. He sounds better than anyone there. What the hell happened to this guy at KGO? Its like the 10th time I've asked this!

  9. Who ever the guy is subbing for Rush today, I hope he does not return. The Host's views are okay, but there is something about his speaking voice, and his cadence that makes me a little sleepy. I realize not everyone is going to use their voice in a professional way from the start. Sometimes you get the opposite effect; I think I heard Brian Copleland back on the air this morning, already furiously race baiting, running hot on emotion. From one extreme to the other. I'll just put on a CD for now; back to Houses Of The Holy by Led Zeppelin. It's what I need right now.

  10. WORST Morning News Anchor: Tori Campbell/KTVU: She's definitely cold as ice, almost robotic.

  12. Worst sports cast: Vern Glenn on weekends. Unlistenable--too many hysterics, shouts, and squeals. Overdoing it.

This isn't a news category, but best sports commentary: Jeremy Newberry. He is honest and no-nonsense.

    1. I only see him on his 15-second to 30-send sports updates in the morning he tapes the night before. That's more than enough Vern Glenn. He's terrible.

  13. Rich... your down on Darya and Tori because they won't "do you", be honest

  14. Please Veronica: one side or the other and stop with the sideways gaze. Waiting for Fox 2 to start with the blond news readers sitting on a couch or settee, short skirts, big hair. You know its coming.

  16. The Foxiest Fox at Fox 2 is Claudine Wong.

  17. Dan Ashley was telling a really good story about his dad who lives on the East Coast last night. About living that far away and not seeing him that much.

  18. I think too many media folks try to 'overdue it' when they go on the air. They are always told that they've got to "grab people's attention" ' but instead of being naturally enthusiastic and comfortable, they sometimes go 'over the top,' spouting a lot of noise and nonsense.

Unfortunately, many Americans have gotten used to this kind of 'junk food' for the mind on TV, and they seem to accept it.

For instance, it's a sad commentary that Richard Sherman, the great Seattle defensive back, is best known for his juvenile post game rant, (where he went off on Niners' wide out Eric Crabtree last year following the NFC Title game).

Sherman is a bright, engaging and likeable young fellow who went to Stanford, but he came across like a braying, obnoxious punk in that interview and it was a sad commentary that that quick interview (it lasted about 70 seconds), got so much play.

But that's what the media foists all too often, and Americans have gotten all too used to it. I guess we have created an 'attention deficit society, ' partly through exposure to all of the crap that is all too available on Television.

    1. If the "juvenile" wasn't there to begin with it wouldn't have come out on so little provocation. Sherman will be remembered forever for this because that's what Americans do. They don't "accept" anything; the media reflects them as they already are. Unfortunate as it was, Aubrey at CBS understood this, and this is why on this day Donna Douglas warrants Top News, just for example.

  19. I find that some of your dis-likes are based on if they don't give you insider information, so I take this list with a grain of salt. So for me, worst woman newsreader - liz cook. Most sexy - Frances Dinglasan. Best reporter - Dan Ashley. Worst male anchor - Larry Beal. Worst weatherperson - Steve Paulsen, I think his target audience is women that are 80 yrs old. worst new station - KNTV, not sure why, I just never watch them.

    1. Bring back Maggi Scura ! ..... and Doug Moore
and team them up Tom Sinkovitz
      Yes, KNTV sucks.

    2. The guy I feel sorry for is the one who ends up with Liz Cook. She's gorgeous but we've all heard the stories about her corner office father who works at Disney, paid for her education at USC, greased the skids for her career, etc. Can you imagine being hooked up to that 'round the clock? She's gonna want everything right now, all the time.

  20. Dave Clark = Perd Hapley

  21. poor liz cook ...she just needs to go to a smaller market and find her way that way.
and Veronica is better suited for So Cal. PIX has some major issues to fix this year.
