KGO Radio Formally Begins Weekend Blowout; Update: KGO Canned Infomercial Weekend; Expands News; Oh, and Ronn Owens Frequent Ass-Kissing Lunches With Bloomquist, Cumulus Shill

Bye Bye "God Talk" ...last program aired Sunday Morning.

*Most other weekend shows on the hit list

*KGO 810, "Your Cumulus-Syndicated Weekend minutiae" --sounds snappy.

*Developing...

UPDATE: 11: 19 AM PT

So-called "big meeting" last week resulted in top suit, Randall Bloomquist, saying "no talk hosts will be fired." Until Brent Walters was fired.

*Lots of infomercials and "block programming" in the mix--when they implement is not known but sooner rather than later.

*KGO still has no Program Director; (surprise), Bloomquist has the duties until Cumulus finds its next victim. Maybe they could hire Karel--he's an entertainer.

*News 5-9 Sunday--after that, mix of canned-taped programming. Hope you like real-estate shows masquerading as content. And more news--they still forget about that 740 AM guy next to the dial.

*Angie Coiro, the recently hired 10 AM-1 PM Sat./Sun. host is being groomed for eventual M-F show. They see a lot of potential in her work.

*Ass-kisser: Ronn Owens frequent lunch guest lately? None other than Bloomquist. Your mattress man is now a certified corporate ass-kisser. (We'll report on this in a later post).

*Check back for updates...

  1. Listening to Brent Walter's final show now. At least they let him say goodbye on the air. He said the show that's replacing him is a news show.

  2. I heard it this morning. I almost never listened to that show. I respect his cause, but the host's delivery tended to make me sleepy, and that theme song 'Sunday Morning": was mega-nerdy and whiny. I know these seem superficial, but those were my impressions. Even then, I was glad there was a show to discuss matters of God and sprituallity. This is what happens, when California keeps electing amoral, godless people who see nothing special about the American way of life. If Meg Whitman had been elected, I tend to doubt we would be losing all the religious programming, devaluing the older demographic without an ounce of compassion. For too many, secularism, the adoration of the self, or gender issues have become their new and only religion. Sad that Rabbi Lapin was not given even this much consideration.

    1. California keeps electing amoral people because there are increasingly more people here who are amoral. We just got back from ten days with friends/relatives in Ohio which is becoming a **very** politically and culturally conservative place. That's an important point, given that Ohio will very likely pick the next President.

    3. God loses, for now, to Karel. Talk about irony. Bernie Ward is home next weekend after his ordeal. Wonder how long before he'll be back on KGO.

Karel must go. What's the delay? That TV experiment needs to go where the sun don't shine. It's, like him, bloated, senseless and has no socially redeeming social value. The quickey he's gone, the better. A 50+ year old going 15. Unbelieivable. Good going, Cumulus.

    7. Listen to Christine, she knows it all. Oops that's right, her well published KC case that she "won" was over-ruled on appeal and then a higher court "punted" any further appeal. Bitter she is.

    8. Brent did not preach spirituality nor any particular religion. He never preached but educated people about historical facts and archealogical finds tying them in to what is in the various religious books. I'll miss his knowledge. KGO fired him once before and then rehired him because of the uproar frm the listeners. So let KGO know how to feel.

    9. Quite an interesting message string. Why would I ever listen to a show called god talk? So it won't be missed by me.

@7:48 Seriously, Meg Whittman? What a fool you are. Maybe you didn't pray hard enough for her. How can anyone fault what Jerry Brown has done with California?

@8:55 I hope I never find myself in Ohio again. What an awful and backward state. The next President is coming from Ohio? Wrong as Hillary isn't from Ohio.

I like the changes so far on the weekends. One hour of John Hamilton is enough. I travel a lot and I have picked up some good tips from him and his guests, but one hour is enough. I hope Ryan Scott and Brian Copeland get replaced next. I also don't care for Karel, but I rarely listen to radio at night so not a biggie to me

    10. 10;17...so how is it boring to say that religion and morality are not the same thing? Do you assume they are? how? That's actuallly a huge current debate as more and more people, particularly twenty-somethings, are leaving religion in the rear view mirror. Does this mean they are more or less moral? More people have died because of religion than any other force in human history. Did you not know this? As for 10:19's apparent interest in my own religion or morals(separate inquiries), I'm a Roman Catholic existentialist. Predictably the folks who bleat about how holy they are, aren't. As for judging morality or lack of same, look to what someone does, not what they say. Should I feel bad that I took care of a parent for 14 years, instead of putting him in a nursing home where the residents have pictures of their children on the nightable along with their plastic jesus? Btw, the children don't visit, unless it's to talk about the disposition of the eventual estate. They come by, on their way back from church.

    11. 10:45 ..at least get your facts straight..I never filed any KC case. I was the plaintiff in a federal case(not local or state). We won two jury verdicts in federal district courts in two cities...We lost at the 8th circuit and at the US Supreme Court, Justice Sandra Day O'Connor wrote that in response to our federal writ that she wanted to hear the case..The brethren didn't. I'm not sure what that has to do with a discussion of religion or morality on the radio and what is interesting and what isn't. Is it your point, that because , after a career in television which included San Francisco and CBS national, I chose to be a plaintiff in a Title VII case, that somehow I don't have a point of view about an entirely different matter? How silly, you twit..

    13. 10:54 there is quite a lot most people can and do fault in regards to Jerry Brown and California. I would list "some" but I don't feel like typing for an hour. Sadly, most of you will be long gone or too far gone in the mind in some nursing home before you see what his policies and the policies of your beloved liberal party end up doing to this state in the long run. Never follow blindly.

    15. How do you get from Meg Whitman to KGO firing their God talk host?? Meg Whitman was as far as I could tell a capitalist, I doubt she would in any way interfere with a private corporation's decisions for their radio show? Your argument does not hold any water, what so ever. I never listened to God talk, since I'm not particular religion, I did use to listen a little to Bernie Wards God talk once in awhile, because he had a different take on the subject. Having said that it is disappointing that more news and infomercials will be replacing an actually program, it seem to happen more and more. Most of the lesser stations has tons of it on week ends and overnight. Months ago when Rich reported that KGO admitted they screwed up and needed to make changes, I thought they would make changes for the better, more quality, more talk, instead they are scraping the bottom of the barrel.

I certainly hope they keep Pat Thurston and Brian Copeland, as for the new host Angie, my verdict is still out, she seem solid, certainly better than Maureen, I liked Matt Ray, but he seem to just listened to the callers rather than engage them, or challenge their point of view, that became somewhat boring. Eathan Bearman on KSFO is for the most part a jerk, it is not his subjects, but he always talk in a tone of voice that sounds like, he talk down to his audience, and think they are really not smart enough to understand him, or get his point, just annoying, and he really isn't that smart.

    17. Anon, 12:52 PM: I said mind your own business and shut up! I'm gonna be right here to frustrate the living stinking shit out of people like you by saying what's on my mind and there isn't a goddamn thing you can do about it. I was just in line at the local Whole Foods in WC about two hours ago and had to endure their charging me an extra dime for a paper bag. I looked at the kids working the checkout lane and told them point blank that I thought banning plastic bags was a stupid idea (term I believe I used was "retarded", purposely being as anti PC as possible) and reminded them of the whole saving trees fad of five or ten years ago. They looked at each other and then at me, not believing that someone would actually speak the truth. If what I saw in Ohio and Pennsylvania over the last week is any indication, you can look forward to more of that sort of thing going forward. I'm taking it upon myself to make people like you as uncomfortable as possible. You've gotten away with this chronic emotional fog, stagger around in the dark, feel good mind fuck shit for too long. It's ending now. We're ending it.

And by the way, my wife and I make six figures each and live in Danville. We LIKE it here, only problem is having to leave our little bubble and deal with people like you. When we encounter them and they start their shit, this is how we treat you. Get used to it. There's more coming.

    18. germancarsonly, 10:54 AM: No, the next President isn't coming from Ohio but given the realities of the Electoral College (which I suspect you know very little about), they will determine who wins. I also strongly suspect the VP nominee will be John Kasich, given that two out of three carrying among Ohio/Pennsylvania/Florida wins the race. Jeb will almost certainly be the nominee, pulling Kasich in as VP and guaranteeing the trifecta. Kasich won his re-election against Fitz by 31 points (yes...feel free to check it) and would be a strong addition to a Jeb Bush ticket for many reasons. Do I like the idea? NO, I do not. Do I think it will happen anyway? Yes, I do. The Bushes are the closest thing we have to a royal family. That's a fact. You don't have to like it but that's how it is.

    22. Rootvg sounds like a jerk, he must be a Sussman follower. It is not his politics it is his personality. I work for a major department store in the Bay Area, there is nothing more annoying than having customers complain to us about things that are totally out of our control, in fact out of stores control, it is usually a city ordinance or a county, go and complain at council meeting, to the people who have the power, not to a clerk, who is on their feet 8 hours a day, make usually just a little more than minimum wage, and have no control.

I'm amused how the conservatives is up in arms about the no plastic bag ban. I grew up in post second world war Denmark, and my dad was a pretty conservative guy, (in a European sort of way) when I was growing up, we didn't have much in terms of supermarkets, we had the baker, the butcher, etc. many didn't have cars (my parents didn't) we rode out bikes and EVERONE brought their own shopping net, it was unheard of stores giving out bags. When I got to be a teen-ager (in the sixties) there were supermarkets and things had changed, stores gave out bags, usually plastic, my Dad was horrified of the waste, thought the world was going to hell in hand basket (over stated), but I think you get my point. To my parents generation waste was almost a sin, now conservatives here in the US seem think waste is about freedom, I think I prefer my parents brand of conservatism to the what I see here, it makes more sense.

    23. We have the plastic bag law because of the touchy-feely, high schoolish, emotionally driven, follow the leader California culture. You don't see it in Ohio. You don't see it in Pennsylvania. You don't see it in Texas. Why? Those people can think. Out here, people feel instead. It's a luxury. Andy Breitbart (I knew him) used to talk about these morons who believe they can save the world by eating the right cheese. You and they are one and the same.

One of the things that always distinguishes lefties is their emotional reaction to things. It's called Ready, Fire, Aim and Roger Ailes was talking about media people being very much that way sometimes. He's pushing eighty and has fifty years in the business so he knows. Right away, you start calling names. Why? You're weak. What are you afraid of? I have some experience in the cockpit and if I put you behind the yoke of an aircraft and pulled an engine, you'd kill us both. While you're going divergent on all three axes over something stupid, I've gotten you (figuratively speaking) in my sights looking to take the next shot. Never forget that. If you do, I'll remind you and not gently. Your epithets have no effect on me. None.

Do you honestly believe it really matters who's in the White House? All those guys (Obama included) take their orders from on high. You do know the ACA originally came from the Heritage Foundation, right? It was Bob Dole's healthcare plan from the 1996 campaign, isn't any better now than it was twenty years ago. Obama and the Dems wanted single payer but it didn't happen. They were told what to do and they did it. You and I and my wife and others around us aren't in control.

Here's something you can take to the bank. Jeb will be elected President in 2016. The next chairman of the Federal Reserve will be John Taylor, an economist from Stanford who's very close to the Bushes. He's appeared at Conservative Forum of Silicon Valley of which my wife and I are long time members. Interest rates MUST go up and it will cause another recession similar to that seen from 1980-1982. That recession was intentionally stimulated to get a handle on the money supply and this one will be no different. If you are in debt, get it paid off with cheap money NOW while you can.

The last line of your post tells me exactly what I want to know about you. Keep flapping your lips. I'm reloading.

    24. I just wrote the blog about plastic bags and growing up in Denmark. Frankly rootvg I don't think the clerks looked at you, because they couldn't believe you spoke the truth. I think their thoughts were more like "And what do you expect us clerks to do about a City ordinance". Right wingers have no patent on political correct, I'm fairly left wing, I don't care for PC, and even though I'm a woman in my sixties I love a dirty joke at times, love Saturday night live and comedians that are way out there. Don't flatter yourself and think you are so special.

    26. Anon at 7:48...so it's elected officials that program radio, is that your 'logic"? Your assumption that only religious people are moral is the blind spot of all conservative religious zealots. Blind reckoning from a starting point of a false premise. If you want to equate morality and religion, don't look too hard at history, the facts will make you look and sound as foolish as your last post.

    27. rootvg read my blog at 8:43, being against plastic bags is not necessarily about being touchy feely. I have the feeling you have not responded because you don't know how to defend yourself. American's are so misguided about freedom, they see little things as a ban on plastic bags, as taking away their freedom. When I go back to Europe and tell my friends and family that in the US you might be forced to stay in job because otherwise you would loose your healthcare, they see that as a major loss of freedom. Freedom in most northern European countries are different that in the US, most people are free from worry about getting a major illness, they worry less and fret less about having enough money in retirement, we have less homeless people on the streets. Do we pay high taxes yes, are things perfect, no. Which system is better, it depends, most of my friends in Scandinavia would not change places with someone in the US. I have lived here for many years, and see the good and bad in both systems. In general I prefer the free marked system, but if someone is down on their luck, illness, extended unemployment, they would be better off in Scandinavia. Anyway to think a ban on plastic bags is taking away your freedom is childish.

    28. @9:47
You're an intelligent European who's far too wise and insightful to be concerned about the whacked ramblings of a wingnut like rootcanal. He/she/it is the type of American your friends and family surely laugh about. You know the type...they froth at the mouth over perceived encroachment on their imaginary freedoms while ignoring the larger and far more serious issues that truly affect quality of life.

      Delete
    29. I appreciate your kind words, perhaps I have a different view of freedom, since I was born a few months before the war ended, and Denmark was liberated from the German occupation, although I never experienced the occupation myself, I heard enough from my parents who lived 30 miles south of Copenhagen and from my aunt and uncle who lived in Copenhagen, to get a realistic idea of what those 5 years was like.

P.S. My parents took in a friend of my aunt and uncle for 6 months who was a fugitive from Gestapo. With stories like that you have a whole different perspective on life in general and what real freedom means.

      Delete
    30. @12:44
Yes, but the irony is that the Germans of today have much more respect for one's freedoms and rights than an American like rootcanal who laughably considers himself to be better than everyone else and would be quite content to deny the freedoms and rights of others.

I fear the inverted writing is also on the wall for ksfo's Happiest Gardener Bob Tannebaum. I hope that I'm wrong, but the trend suggests that there is a push to remove all vestiges of local programming, all the personality run shows that focused on life in the Bay Area. The goal being to make everything standard oil and generic.

Maybe Bob can do a goodbye show, if he promises management that he won't spend the last on air hours trashing them mercilessly, the way they deserve to be trashed. He may have his wife or one of the daughters co-host to sit near and keep him in check. "When you see my face turning red from angry thoughts, quickly break in with a joke or a commercial."

    1. What is wrong with being a housewife, house wives do more multitasking than most men or women in many jobs, especially a housewife with triplets.
Having said that Pat Thurston is one of the more intelligent hosts on the air these days, do I always agree with her no, but she knows her stuff, takes calls, challenge the callers, and often bring up subjects others don't, if you don't like her, don't listen. There is no need to degrade her.

    2. Pat has been a major radio voice for quite some time, in addition to raising triplets, no simple task. She is always well-prepared and smart. Similarly, Angie Coiro is an old radio hand. 3. As far as "always well prepared", I can't remember the topic but a month or so ago I remember turning on KGO and hearing her talk about something she absolutely knew nothing about and then having a caller bring up items in regards to the topic she brought up that she knew nothing about. I remember thinking, "I've actually listened to the news for maybe 20 minutes this past week and know more than this host".

    5. Christine,

As much as I respected you. Pat is not always prepared. Awhile back I used to hear her shuffling her notes, looking for counter points.

Most of the time, she improvises with general comments that barely meet the standards of tangible truth. Like Ronn and some other former KGO talk show hosts, Pat is not a deep thinker.

Pat gains favor by feeding her co-workers with her baked goods.

Compared to Angie, she is average at best.

      Delete
    6. 4:41 that's because management is probably forcing her to talk about topics she doesn't care about. Then when she fails at those they'll use it against her to cut her loose. Take her out of comfort zone, and then blame her. That's management 101.

Back then it was on Gay St. of all names to have. The shabby little dorms were across the street, which is where I lived for a few years. As part of a going away gift, my mom gave me a major musical hit of that time; The Tin Man, by America. Some considered that group as Neil Young wannabes. I did not become commercially sucessful as an artist, but I'm so glad to have gone there and met the different types of people.

    2. John's people are fed up with all the union bullshit, stiff and staid/Cleveland-against-the-world business culture. A labor lawyer friend of mine in Medina with connections high in the administration was telling me John getting sick of screaming at walls and banging his fist on conference room tables at hearing "we can't do that" and "no one here's ever done that" and "we just don't do that here" coming from old men and the old guard in various parts of NE Ohio particularly Cleveland/Akron and especially Youngstown. Right To Work is on the horizon given that Michigan has it. If it can happen there, it can happen anywhere. John is also said to be working on a plan to phase out the state income tax they've only had since 1971, long understood to be the year that began the slide of jobs and population to the sunbelt.

My wife did an internship with the Ohio House in the early nineties and they put up her at Siebert Hall which I later found out is a grad dorm at OSU. It's nice enough although a little old. I spent many weekends there.

    1. Easy to say but that 50K watt clear channel signal gives them so much leverage. It's almost impossible for them to completely fail. This is why there's talk of shutting down or selling KSFO and simply merging the talent it doesn't want to get rid of to KGO. That's what I would do.

    2. No we are "still connected" to KGO because despite their downfall, they do have some good hosts. 910 failed totally in trying to become the new local talk station (just listen to Joel and Corey and Gil), so for those of us who like good talk radio wherever we can get do turn into KGO. Am I pissed the fired most of the good host, am I pissed that they are not hiring more and better hosts, you bet. However, that does not mean I can't listen when I'm driving (which I do a lot of) or doing laundry, am totally selfish and will turn on any station who can entertain and inform me, and keep my interest.

  24. Hey 2:45: Hate to break this news to you - but "they" could absolutely CARE LESS how many of us have ZERO interest in sports. It's all about the money they make by broadcasting football and basketball games......if no one listens, the $$ is the same.

    1. Even when it was the good ole KGO the had sports on, although it seems like it is more than football these days, basket ball or baseball, also seem to be on. I like the bloggers above have zero interest in sport, but recognize many in the Bay Area fell different.

  25. I imagine KGO is going to end up sounding like WA does on he weekends now. All diet and vitamin supplement infomercials...

  26. HAH! Karel just mentioned "all his haters" on "a certain blog". Ya gotta love it - and yet, he continues to have NO CLUE as to why (so many ways) he is in such disfavor....since he NEVER changes one of his horrible bad habits of not letting others get a word in - or - even worse - smacking them down repeatedly with his screaming and yelling. Biggest ass on the planet (I turned the radio off after I heard that).

    1. He's such a pathetic creep. He was belly aching that he only has 400 likes to his Facebook "celebrity" page and only 2,000 twitter friends. He said: "honey I'm a celebrity and I deserve more likes". No Karel, you don't deserve more likes. In fact the 400 likes is about 390 too many.

  27. Well, part of the wish has come true. Mel Baker no more on that idiot Karel's show anymore. Baker'e been moved (banned) to a one hour news block on Sunday morning as of this coming week. John Hamilton has seen the travel show cut to one hour and Karel is on the edge of oblivion. No matter what Randall Bloomquist knows it. Listen to Karel whine about what Rich's blog said about his prissy, shitty TV show made me through up in my mouth a little. It was horrid. I didn't think Karel could reach a deeper barrel of the "entertainment" calendar -- but he's done it for the next two weeks at least. The "show" is horrid and he comes off as the amateur he's long been. No sense, all him, poor production value, no continuity, bad shooting and Karel is a d-bag. He can't take Bloomburg's "no one will get fired" screed seriously Frankly, i'd rather her Bernie Ward. Karel must to. Sooooo bad. I think his days are numbered.

    1. I called FreeSpeechTV and told them I'd donate $100 if they take Karel's show off the air.

  28. That fact someone as polarizing and unprofessional as Karel is even associated with KGO shows you how far that once prestigious station has fallen. That place is an absolute mess, and it's getting worse. Thanks Cumulus for not only wrecking what used to be a 'legacy' station, but then trashing it with crappy hosts, unimaginative programming, and no coherent direction. How was this company ever been allowed to become a media Giant? If this kind of thing can happen, (which is does now, all too frequently in the business of broadcasting.) what does that say about the state of this country? There is no pride in wanting to put out a superior product and serve the public anymore, it's all about the bottom line and keeping the share holders happy. That's a greedy and short sided view which is killing broadcasting, and is wounding this country grievously.

  29. I came across this blog when most of the best talk radio hosts in the business were fired. I continued to listen to some shows even if I didn't agree with the hosts on a lot of topics. The hosts that have a large audience (even if some on this blog think not) are Pat T, Karel, Brian C, and Ronn O. I will miss the "After the Bell" hour which actually was well-produced with good business info. Management should bring back Christine Craft and Len Tillem if possible, even if not on a regular schedule. Give back the topic selection to the host - it's obvious from the same worn topics that they are told to use them. With all the interesting topics to discuss, including light/humorous ones, why stick to the "CNN" topic of the day and rehash it over and over?

  30. why doesn't KGO just bite the bullet and rehire John Rothman?

  31. I was watching the weekly Monday Night Football game when Howard Cosell broke the awful news during the game that John Lennon had been killed. It cast a pall over the rest of the evening and everyone sitting around with me that night was in a state of shock after it happened. Political assassinations? Yes, in a weird way you could understand that. But killing one of the great musical artists of our time? What a tragedy!

  32. I am officially ending my years listening to KGO. I heard 2 infomercials this weekend and they were worthless and a complete time waster. I will not go through 30 minutes of someone trying to convince me to buy something I really don't need. And, the firing of Brent Walters is the final straw for me. I do not affiliate with any religion, but I enjoyed listening to his take on Christianity and, also, his discussions of other religions. He was unique and he will be missed. On the other hand, I cannot stand Karel (call me a hater, whatever...) and never listen to him, anyway. Does anyone have any suggestions of other stations to listen to? Right now, I am headed to KCBS, I guess...
