Bad Week For KTVU And Surly Jana Katsuyama; Bill Martin Weather Teases Overwhelm; KCBS Is Impressed With Kit Yarrow; Saturday Notes

It was a tough week for KTVU as the Fox-infused version of what the news direction might look like took full effect. Some of it good, some, not so good.

Jana Katsuyama was covering the Oakland protests and doing a live shot. During her pre-recorded package you could hear, flush out of the blue, "Shoot, let's do that again, ...'3, 2, 1...ok...'" Awkward, incomprehensible and embarrassing for sure. I could only imagine what the occasionally surly, Katsuyama, was thinking.

From a station staffer: "This never happens in the old days. Now these mistakes take place non-stop--Just ridiculous."

On an editorial front, barely two months after Fox has taken over, the style and pace of the news is beginning to take shape.

There's a lot of touchy-feel-good stories. Much too much frankly.

Suddenly, KTVU has run a pair of couples-losing-their-ring and finding it later entrees. Two in barely a couple of weeks. Sure, heart-warming, cute and sentimental, but a little bizarre and out of place. At 10 'o-clock no less. A lot more feel-good stories. Are they playing to the Walnut Creek mom? Apparently so..

Meanwhile, the abundant weather teases carry on and although there's finally weather to talk and report on, KTVU's weather tease-fetish is foolish. No less than four Bill Martin teases took place on Friday night during the "10 o'clock News." One is legit. Two is tolerable. Three is ridiculous. Four is insane. How many times can you show Doppler radar? C'mon now! Get a grip.

*KCBS has become press headquarters for Kit Yarrow. Who's she? A consumer research psychologist. Sounds fancy. Apparently, KCBS is impressed since every time you hear the radio station, seems Yarrow is being interviewed, featured. In fact, she's once again the guest on this week's "In Depth" show.

*Prediction: In a couple of weeks you're going to see and hear about too much water in Marin and all the flooding and havoc affecting businesses in Mill Valley. Oh, and the usual owner complaining that the city doesn't provide enough sand bags and how its taking a toll on his/her livelihood --gut-wrenching, time to sell the extra Volvo in the garage.

*Yes, I know I'm beginning to kvetch and bitch and moan about the proliferation of weather reports about as much if not more than the usual suspects in town it just annoys the heck out of me in case you didn't know.

*KCBS just plugged Kit Yarrow yet again. Does she have stock in the company?

  1. It must be embarrassing for someone who attended journalism school to end up doing stories about wedding rings going down the toilet. How about the inflatable snow man story on KTVU last night?
Martin's teases are so grating. The they've stretched the teases so long that mark ibañez ends up with barely one minute to do sports.

  2. I record 10 o'clock news every night and start watching it at 10:30 just so I can fast forward through Bill Martin.

  3. You must have written this before seeing today's weekend morning cast. The morning pair of Mibach and Claudine Wong did the news from comfy couches. What I learned was,Claudine is fidgety, and not comfortable or relaxed on camera,on the couch. She tied up her arms, kept her legs crossed, fiddled with here boot tops. I also learned that Mibach isn't tall...She was almost his height, and Rosemary Orozco towered over both of them.
The fun starts when the female anchors wear short skirts and sit on the couch. Man,that's FOX news 101 isn't it? You know.

    1. Stan as always your a day late and dollar short. Tori Campbell and Pam Cook were both in skirts the last few days and both sitting on the comfy couch.

  4. Kit Yarrow was a regular Ronn guest a while back...and it always sounded like she was auditioning for something...

    1. Ok.let me explain the sarcasm everybody but you got. FOX news? Short skirts? geddit? Do you know ANYTHING about how FOX portrays female anchors?. Maybe I should call it displays.
      There's your creepy.

    2. No, it's not that Stan sounds creepy.
Check out this guy's other comments, he IS CREEPY.
      Totally creepy.

  6. > There's a lot of touchy-feel-good stories. Much too much frankly.

What's even more annoying is afterwards, Frank or, especially, Julie, has to end things with an ad-libbed comment that just about makes me throw up. "Aww, what a SAD story. So many hearts broken at what should be a very happy time of year. ...Thanks, Amber for that report." Shaddup. I like the Dennis Richmond school: "I'm not paid to give you my opinion on the news." Amen. Bring back Dennis.

Kit Yarrow: Kit Yarrow is on KTVU and KGO just as much. She's a media whore, the Gloria Allred of consumer affairs.

    1. I've been noticing Frank always makes some kind of noise after each story, like doing the melancholy "Hmmm" after sad reports. Suzanne Saunders and Leslie Griffith always did that, too. Hate it!

Kit Yarrow has been commenting on marketing matters in the Bay Area for at least 20 years. When I first saw her on TV, I thought she was super hot.

    2. Yes, Frank likes to moan.

Suzanne Saunders. Did she become Suzanne Shaw or is that another Suzanna?

    3. Suzanne Saunders, a Stanford honors grad, great beauty and remarkably swell person was married at one time to George Watson. George and Suzanne anchored the news at KSBW..I did weather and some reporting. I never heard her do a 'sad and melanchonly" hmmmmmmm. I do remember her racing out of the building to do stories with her CP-16 camera, utterly fearless. She married someone named Shaw later. Her own name is Suzanne Saunders.
Speaking of little vocal quirks which can either be signatures or just annoying quirks, remember Pete Wilson? He'd read from his prepared script every day to begin his radio programs. Then he'd follow other remarks with the patented Pete Wilson endless audible sigh. Gill Gross inherited some of that.

  7. Gloris Allred who annoys you so, is one of the most successful civil rights and employment law advocates anywhere, ever. Her fearless approach to using media ini her clients' best interests may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it produces great results. I'm working on a northern California law enforcement discrimination case with multiple plaintiffs that I hope I can refer to her successfully. Why? because she'd( along with a great firm geared up precisely for this kind of case) do a great job. Does she mind that you think of her as a "media whore"? What do you think?
I don't know who Kit Yarrow is, nor do I think of a "consumer research psychologist" as a comparable profession.

    1. She's the Al Sharpton of the feminist movement.

    2. No, if she were the "Al Sharpton of the feminist movement", she'd be all bluster and no substance. Gloria Allred is full of fury on the air, and immensely professional and successful in court. There's a big difference.
Kip Yarrow is probably on lots of shows right now because her apparent expertise is not consumer protection, but rather the semi-ersatz psychology of what motivates consuming. Tis the season for sales etc.

    3. Allred is an opportunistic, grand-standing ambulance chaser. I can see why you like her Christine. Then again, after your very vocal support for a creep convicted of looking at kiddie-porn; "child pornography" in his own words, nothing surprises me about you.

    4. You might want to research all the plaintiff's cases that Gloria Allred has won for her clients. As for my friendship with Bernie Ward, that isn't going to change. I can forgive him for looking at forbidden images on the computer, you can't. I find it wrong that a person, like Bill Cosby to transports underage girls across state lines for illicit sex gets a pass, and someone who commits a thought crime does six years. It's not just me who thinks thusly about mandatory sentences in federal internet sex prosecutions. I think someone who drugs and rapes and transports underage girls ought to be doing time in federal prison. Please check your use of hyphens.

    5. Gloria is a revolting embarrassment to the legal profession. No big surprise that Christine is a fan.

    6. Christine, loves to argue but can't seem to stay remember what she's trying to say.

Bill Cosby? Christine, you think the fact that Bill Cosby may have committed a federal crime is relevant here?

    7. I'm sorry, but you'll have to tell me what "to stay remember" means, 1:49. Did you want to think about it a while, and try again?

  8. Best anchor ad-lib I ever heard was from the great Terilyn Joe.

After a story about some crook doing something stupid and getting caught, Terilyn's classic lib, in it's entirety, was:

    "What a bonehead!"

Love ya, TJ, wherever you are.....

    1. Just heard the ad by the nasal guy who sounds like Gollum. The geniuses at KGO still think they're going to get "the young demo" using those idiotic ads. The ad actually says: "Less news, more talk ALL UP IN YOUR EAR!!!".
      Wtf!!??

    1. I've always thought she does a fine job as a reporter or an anchor. Not sure why Rich described her as 'surly'. I think he's off base on that one. Heather Holmes, now there's a surly (and not that attractive) individual.

  11. Heather Holmes is just like the Marina Girl. Can't stand any other good looking female in the area. She feels threatened. Materialist and Juvenile.

Plus she changes her hair up like every week or so.

    1. You mean any good looking female in the area. Having "other" in your sentence implies that she is also good looking, which she isn't.

  13. Oh, you think that's bad? KPRC (NBC) in Houston ran a story as their second item on the 6 PM news that a dog bit someone. The next night, as the LEAD story, they told viewers about a dog biting another dog. WOW! Like that never happens....

  14. Didn't Suzanne Saunders briefly go by "Saunders Shaw?" Not her last name, but her first-name/last-name?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Yes, after her marriage, Suzanne Saunders(working for KRON by then) wanted to go by 'Suzanne Saunders Shaw' on-air, but I guess some consultants talked her out of it because of the unwieldy triple-S sound. She then dropped her first name, and, for a brief time, went by 'Saunders Shaw'. Naturally, when throwing stories to and from one another, first names were used, and everyone would say, 'Thanks, Saunders, OK, Saunders'. Eventually, this started sounding weird, not just to viewers who wrote and called in, but to KRON's other on-air talent.(I recall some columnist mentioning that Radnich caught himself starting to say 'Suzanne', and awkwardly adjusted it to 'Saunders'). So, FINALLY, she pretty much apologized on-air, started going by 'Suzanne Shaw', and whoever felt 'threatened' by her calling herself 'Saunders Shaw' stopped complaining.
'I'm Pete Wilson. News anchors with CONFUSING names...SIIIIIIIIGHHHHHH...'
