The Rich Lieberman 415 Media Monday Questionaire

Many of you come here to check in on Bay Area TV/Radio. Some of you are regulars and some are new.

415 Media has grown quite considerably to a point where I wouldn't have imagined such thought a few years ago.

I want to start off Monday by probably opening up a hornet's nest, possibly, but why change now.

What do you look for when you come here? What are some of the things you like and dislike? (hornet's nest reference)

Of course we'll delve more into this later on. I appreciate your feedback.

*You can also inquire on 415 Media by following and asking me questions on Twitter

*Rich Lieberman and 415 Media are not responsible for comments made by others on this website.

  1. How about a survey on who is the worst traffic/newsreporter of KGO.

    1. Deidra Miles. absolutely horrible. Where do they find someone like that? In the Walmart close out bargain aisle?

    2. You would be surprised by the resumes of some of the employees at Radiate Media. All of us have worked in radio for years, and some of us have DECADES of experience. Every single one of us has been in the same boat: We saw our radio jobs and careers vanish into thin air due to likes of Cumulus, Clear Channel, et al. Most of us have experience as traffic reporters, while some of us came from a music radio background. We aren't idiots or dumb asses or clowns. A few of us are lucky enough to get guidance and feedback from the KGO air staff and producers and that's greatly appreciated. And there are a few disgruntled KGO employees who hang us out to dry by keeping quiet about mispronunciations and such. Sure, your silence and complicity in keeping mum makes us look bad, but it also makes you look bad as well. While none of us are happy about the circumstances of deregulation that have led us to be doing traffic reports in the capacity that we are, we're all very grateful to have these jobs and we do the absolute best we can with resources we have and the input we get.

  2. When is Justine Waldman coming back from maternity leave? Haven't see her on KNRON since early in the year. Also what happened to KRON'S handsome young reporter John Fenoglio? He also substituted for Vicky L. on KRON weekends but haven't seen him in many months-did he get hired by another out-of-town station?

    1. When Justine delivers the goods, you'll see her back. Probably in the new year.

Haven't seen Fenoglio, I'll check it out.

    - The rare times you break a story.

    Dislikes:

    - Your hypocrisy. The vast majority of your blog is snarky criticism and when the people you criticize take offense, your usual response is that they need to have a thicker skin, yet when people criticize you, your skin is translucent.

    - Censoring or omitting comments simply because they point out your hypocrisy or prove how you're wrong. No one gets it right 100% of the time so just own it.

    - The fact that you block people on twitter who prove you wrong.

Obviously it's your blog and you can say whatever you want, but if you want any credibility whatsoever, eliminate the snark, hypocrisy, and stop censoring comments.

  10. Here's question: Whats going on with Viki Liviakis and KRON on weekends? I posted months ago that she garbled the news on occasion, but last night was the worst. Something about the writer of the"Bourne" spy books retiring..then Vikvi went into..gibberish,true gibberish "Not, and then they went..stop" Made no sense what so ever.
It was straight out of Anchorman..exactly out of Ron Burgundy land, as you see her eyes and mouth not agreeing on what they are reading.
The teleprompter people are killing her or somethings up. I'm not catching weekend weather or sports doing that..
What do you make of that?

  13. I found your blog while looking for information immediately following the KGO Massacre. I stayed because I like it more often than not. Two things I dislike: the voyeuristic "boy discovers dad's Playboy stash" pictorials of female newspeople, and your cringe-inducing personal dating stories.

  14. I like your blog.....and find your information and opininons to be spot on. AND I can guarantee that those people who need to work harder, read better, become better journalists or stop being so bitchy to their co workers are changing their ways ! (or atleast trying to).
So yes, they still read your blog (secretly) and they are hoping to gain your respects one day ! So there ! Keep up the good work !

  16. Likes: Dalheim's comments; news from behind the scenes at all of the TV & Radio stations; station alumni updates (sad about Reading - he did good work at all the stations; only KTVU alumni left from the Reading years locally are Richmond & Pat McCormick, who's been retired in Oregon for almost 20 years - am I missing anyone else? Isn't Brandwynne down South somewhere?); criticism toward the media people that deserve it, especially Cumulus, Karel, Radnich, and any news director, program director, or general manager who is clearly too full of themselves and are hurting the stations they work at or run (and in some cases, have no business being there); your occasional music films/videos; your restaurant stories; your Eastbay stories; your other San Francisco stories; that you have this column, which I believe is more important than ever if the Bay Area broadcasting choices need to be better.

Dislikes: Criticism towards media people that I respect or have a high regard for, but that's nothing compared to...bloggers who criticize before they think and often put their feet in their mouths (unfortunately, that is part of the First Amendment, like it or not - thank goodness for the strolling square/computer mouse); your occasional infatuation with Weiner/Savage (except when he's well-deservingly blasting Limbaugh or Hannity, both of whom have clearly hurt our society's efforts to work together better - people take entertainment so seriously that they can't solve any problems their respective communities have); the bleak future of Bay TV & Radio from your eyes; the lack of more satellite or digital radio options along the Bay.

  24. I like the "blast from the past" stories and hearing what the retired folks are up to.

The censoring habit hurts your credibility. Sure, it's a bit of an insult to find that my time was wasted but I can easily accept that the sun will come up tomorrow if my remarks go unpublished. I figure the comments that support your views are far more frequently published and it's probably more efficient to read your views twice rather than scrolling down to read the liberal PC clap trap comments. You're not fooling anyone.

  25. Likes: I like the inside stories on Bay Area talk radio. I admit there isn't much to listen to that I like. I still listen some to Ronn Owens and Gil Gross on week days. That's it as everything else is pretty bad. On weekends I listen to Pat Thurston, Michael Finney, Leo Laporte, and Christine Craft when she is on. I've started to listen more to Matt Ray, but much of what he discusses is old news by the weekend.

TV? I couldn't care less what is on Bay Area TV as I live in Elk Grove. That's where the local Sacramento radio is as bad as it can get. Tune in a local station and I think I am in some stinkin' red state. That will never happen.

No dislikes. Keep up the good work Rich.

  26. Honestly. I come here for gossip. (And I feel bad about that.) And I also come here because, you Rich, are batty. And I find it entertaining when you "lose it." (And I feel bad about that too.) This is your sandbox, but you lose credibility when you censor honest criticism which "calls you out." (You also go off-topic on things not related to local media.) I have first-hand knowledge of you lack of credibility. You have often quoted my salary from a "very good source." Well, you were wrong by a couple hundred thousand bucks. And.. (sigh) I doubt you will post this, as it is a direct refutation.

I have no interest in sports so skip those discussions.

I very much dislike the racism & misogyny that crops up in the comments and take long breaks when it gets bad.

I especially dislike your fixation on the appearance and attractiveness of women. It is creepy.

    2. What a self centered comment. I don't care about sports, I know many do, so I don't accept that discussions and blogs about sports is part of this blog, however it does seem like it goes overboard at times, but then someone who loves sports and don't care about politics probably feels the same way. As for comments on racism and misogyny I agree it is comments I dislike as well, however we (and even racists and other prejudice comments, is part of free speech, and frankly I would rather that Rich post those, so we can read what some people think, instead of sensoring them. As for your last comment, since I'm a women I have no comment. When I was young I guess I was quite attractive (didn't know it at the time) but got a lot of attention from men, guess nothing has changed.

Bad: it's your blog, so you do whatever. But the Herb Caen deviations, though written well, don't really have a place. It's more about what's going on in this idiotic media market.

  31. I check this blog a couple of times a day. My overall reaction is much like my overall reaction to talk shows ... some topics are of great interest to me - others, not so much. I s'pose that's as it should be.

It's pretty obvious that many of us are current/former media staffers (former, KGO Radio), and I feel that I'm getting some fairly good insider info. Of course, one is ill advised to blindly accept everything. But, taken as a whole, it's informative.

I think you get a little heavy-handed when you're "down," on someone. Maybe, I should just accept that as style. I'm at a loss to understand what happened between you and Ronn Owens (I strongly disagree with those who opine that he should have walked out, after the "massacre").

I wish that, when you share tidbits that fall under "developing story," you would give updates - even when they don't pan out, as you thought they might. I don't think that those of us who come here regularly, would hold it against you. You really are the only game (of it's type) in town, anyway.
