2014 Golden Turkey Awards; Happy Thanksgiving

2014 Thanksgiving Bay Area Media Turkey Awards --ready to commence the holiday spirit you've come here to appreciate.

*Ronn Owens: the gift that always keeps on giving. Mr. Softie, how's that great new format you predicted three years ago been? Maybe your gadgets need to be re-stocked.

*Jon Bristow and Jennifer Jones-Lee: Mr. Pipes and Ms. Giggler "It's Friiiiday!" The gruesome twosome. About as wholesome and sincere as a Lodi Walmart.

*Chef Ryan Scott: If you were more phony, giddy, impish and foolish-sounding, I'd put you on the weekend schedule at KGO. Wait a minute...

*Gary Radnich: One of the most pompous, hideous, predictable, moronic, out-of-touch moron in Bay Area media. Take your used Bentley and shove it up where the sun don't shine. I've been wise to you for years while your sheep stay quiet. I'm not afraid of calling you out. By the way, Liebengood was right.

*Larry Krueger: Larry, I like you personally and know you're just trying to earn a living and have to work with the non-sports potato head, but when you're trying on the air to be someone other than you, it sounds contrived and forced. Be yourself, Larry. You're better than that. Bet on it. (He will).

*Kate Scott: I'll give you this, you pulled a good story over Lee Hammer --congratulations, you make Amy G look like Christianne Amanpour. And I don't give a shit about your wife, really. In seven years you'll be schlepping oranges at the Daly City Flea Market.

*Brian Sussman: What the hell happened to you? It's not your politics. We get that. It's the show, Brian. It sounds worse than shit on toast. And the corny sound gimmicks, the fake fart noises, the bizarre rock music under your fake stupid takes? The dumb train sounders every two minutes? And you really think the traffic chick has young demos listening? Do this: keep repeating Drudge Report items that make up 99% of your show and consider that impending pay cut coming as a signal.

KNBR Morning Show: Dude, Brian, Dude, Powlie, dude, you guys are completely worthless; you've always been worthless. You guys are like a rotting fish that keeps floating up on the seashore and won't go away. Cockroaches don't go away either. They end up at UCLA and write fake books about fake people and fake people can't even stand 'em. Murph, remember that night at Crogans when you were incredulous that I hated your show? I still hate your show. Go take your fake New Jersey friend and the chain-smoking, southern redneck Irishman to an English Beat concert and disappear. You'd do us all a favor.

*Jason Barrett: Hey, genius, have you changed your morning show yet? It's about time. I have an idea: Do one of those contests; get some asshole from Brentwood and put him on the air, that way you save money and get a 1 rating out of sheer luck. Thank God you have Damon. And another thing, you hired Troy Clardy? LMFAO! And now you fired him. Damn, what cohesion. Again, you MUST have pictures of animals and Entercom suits.

*John Lund: Hope you're renting. And is it true the only reason you made it on YSTL was because Papa made some calls? Uh, I should have known. Keep up the classy jokes too. You're a regular Jon Stewart.

*Joe Fonzi: Fonz, the last time you were something Jimmy Carter was president and Radnich was married to a white woman.

*Aaron Pero: Just shut up and quit screaming. Pick on someone your own size. Wait a minute...

*Doug Harville: Doug, I thought you were sincere. We don't always have to agree, just don't fly away because I thought your company screwed Dean Danos and that Bunger is a phony. It's nothing personal.

*Veronica De La Cruz: Dear, I'm sorry about your personal shit. I'm sensitive to all of that because I've been there/done that. But if you're going to reach out to me on arrival and confide then don't start running away into the forest because Rosenheim pulled you aside. It's not good business. It leads to eventually anchoring a shitty late-night newscast that has less shelf life than a Utah bordello. GAME ON!

*Rich Walcoff: 30+ years on radio and you need an extra 50 bucks to do some forcacta 'man cave report on KSFO? Rich, you're bigger than that. I know you have college tuition to pay for but really? I'll sell my Sweetjack coupons and give you the fifty bucks, stop Richie, stop!

*Jan Wahl: Shit, you're so bad you deserve to go back to KGO and this time you don't even have to hoover the PD 165,000 times. One hat.

*Tom Vacar: where's my cigar? Better yet, the next time you do Ronnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn's KGO show, tell Ronnnnnnnnnnn that the North Beach Restaurant lunch with Gene Burns was legit. I was there and heard everything.

*Dennis O'Donnell: Google Alexander O' Neil's song from 1987. You fit the title.

*Ann Killion: Ann, you're a conniving, insincere, phony, would-be-career-killing, sanctimonious twit; I'm wise to your ass, lady, you don't fool me. Nor the other people in this town. Now go tweet that.

*Wayne Freedman: Wayne, chill. Really. You have 17,400 Emmys and plenty of job stability. Quit kissing so much management ass. Get out there. Go to the wharf and have some crab. Get a scotch and relax, you're safe, Wayne. Don't be such a lecturing prick otherwise you'll end up being like David Louie doing a live shot from Redwood City.

*Heather Holmes: You still have the snot tape? Keep it.

Happy Thanksgiving!

    1. So I take it your also a self-loathing no talent hack with a web-site to project such self hatred as this?

  2. So we learned that Radnich is a moronic moron. ;-)

  3. For Heather Holmes I would say "Buy some solids, honey. What do you wear at funerals, your leopard prints and leather skirts?"

  5. There is a lot of anger and not much humor in this post. Lieberman's hatred toward some of these people is surprising and ugly.

  6. That's a whole lot of venting. Please tell me about someone you enjoy, whose work is steady and decent, someone who has integrity. I can think of a few and hope you can, too.

  7. Wow, what 10:44 said! The hatred and negativity practically slapped me in the FACE! WTF? Having a bad day, Rich? Geez!

  8. Wow, that was fun to read (seriously)! And I've never been so glad NOT to see my name!

  9. Today,Radishhead, spent nearly three hours laughing at a sports host who loves sports. The concept made Raddy giggle endlessly. Yet,Raddy goes on kron and knbr and recites "I love what I do". What does he do?
Maybe I wasn't clear on trying to post this but,TWO KRON anchors want to friend me. They found me ,I didn't find them. How they found me? I don't know.

Stan watches Radnich every moment he's on television and listens to every word he says on radio and still doesn't know what Radnich does?

Obviously Stan' is no fast learner.

Yeah Stan, all those KRON anchors are just dying to "friend you."

    2. Stan,,, where to you stand on Lieberman? Would he make your Golden Turkey list?

    3. I guess you didn't get the rhetorical sarcasm? I wont call you a name like "moron". This time.

Dying or not..they want me to friend them. How about you?

    4. Rich about covered it. I would add that John Lund went into graphic details of a man arrested for bestiality. Lund found that so funny,he even went as far as to say how he would prepare the female sheep before the act. If it wasn't shock jockey enough, then Papa and he turned stomachs by reading the vet's report of the animal needing stitches.
I was driving...couldn't change stations fast enough. Even if I had to take my eyes off the winding two lane road to do it..
I would say it was the sickest conversation in the history of local radio. Sports or not.

  12. This morning I was listening to Kate Scott's update and she gives English Premieir League soccer scores when there were tons of college hoops games. Way to ignore your audience. Self-absorbed was the only words I could think of to describe it.

    1. No she didn't. She gave champions League scores, which is getting enormous ratings on FOX, and is live.

Don't care for Kate one way or the other but you're foolish.

  18. Rather an unnecessary shot at Rich Walcoff ... one of the brightest, most articulate and energetic broadcasters in the Bay Area.

The man works for Cumulus. You know about Cumulus, Rich (Lieberman). They own both KGO, and KNBR. Walcoff has sports knowledge that can serve both stations, and Cumulus is shameless in serving itself. He does what he's assigned.

No, I'm not Rich ... or his wife. I worked with him, under Disney ownership ... many years ago.

  19. And a big demerit to the KGO radio guy at 300pm yesterday- give or take- who asked about traffic "Do you know the way to San Jose?". Yeah,I heard you. Must be a virus coming back...

  20. Rich, I love your blog. I have to use this opportunity to defend John Lund. I have worked with him in the past and everything you don't like about Radnich behind the scenes Lund is the complete opposite. He works hard, loves sports, is considerate and helps the people behind the scenes succeed. One may get offended by his humor but what everyone doesn't see is a guy who shows up hours early writing out a show so his partner and producers can succeed.

On the other hand, everything you say about Jason Barrett is true. The word must be out about his inconsistent and dysfunctional leadership skills since nobody wants to come and do a morning show in market number 4 and he has to rely on retreads.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

    1. John Lund seems like a great guy, and I think he does a solid job moving the show along. A couple of months ago he said one of the most accidentally funny things I've ever heard on the radio. Him and Papa were talking about baseball pitchers, and who the A's should start. Lund said, "well, you know you gotta ride the hot guy..."

Papa missed the mark, and Lund said, "that came out wrong."

I was crying. I may have missed it to if not for his self-deprecating remark.

There are young guys in this game all over sports, and regardless of his age I think he's great. Doesn't have an ego, and is generally very upbeat.

I'd also like to add I don't know the guy.

  22. Liam Mayclem. Foodie Chap = Ear Vomit.

    Someone make him stop.

  23. Wow Rich, now tell us how you really feel...but since we're on the subject of people who suck-

Lund needs to go and so does Fitz...Lund acts/sounds like he's 16 years old, and Fitz is an arrogant, know-it-all jerk, who really knows very little...get rid of both of them now.

  24. The most remarkable thing happening at cumulus is the employment of Renee Bakos. It is just insane this woman is employed in our industry. Rich, you need to look into this.

    1. She works at KGO again?!?! Doing what?!?!? "Crazy Renee!"

      Delete
    2. You are spot on. Renee Bakos is a lying, ass-kissing, no talent whore. The stories of what she did years ago at KGO when she was a barely part time board-op are legendary. They are all true.

  25. I actually enjoy JJ Lee and John Bristow in the early mornings.....call me crazy. Irritating at times, and confined by the Cumulus "format" (quick sound-bytes of news, rather than ANY in-depth coverage) - but, competent "news readers", jovial, clever, etc. Now as for Ryan Scott: I truly don't understand how he made it into /onto ANY major news outlet - whether to cook, or to talk about cooking. He's just plain revolting on soooo many levels...

  28. Radnich had an epic rant today vs some Seattle talking head. It was vintage, pure unadulterated Radnich. Some of his best work, ever. Give him some credit.

John Lund is Sancho Panza to Greg Papa's ‎Don Quixote. He makes the show work, period. Those two are the best duo in Bay Area sports radio, hands down.

The game continues to survive in spite of Barrett. They have 2 quality shows: The Wheelhouse, and D.Bruce -- and Haberkoff is surprisingly decent. They just need to figure out mornings and evenings.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Your indictment of chef Scott Ryan is spot on. I wish you had included his more idiotic sidekick "secret china man", how offensive to the Asian community. Can't believe he's still employed. Absolutely the worst KGO hire in history right behind Maureen Langsten and David Weinsteintraub.

  31. The only time I listen to KNBR is occasionally when Tolbert is doing his thing or when Ray Woodson's on. The rest of it is dreck, pure and simple. The morning show is predictable, and having a second string DJ with a fake Jersey accent being a co host on a sports show is a joke. Brian Murphy would be okay if he had a strong co-host. Pee-Con should not be on the air. Marty should not use him on the weekends during baseball season. I like Marty, but his show is much too long. Four to five hours of pre and post game is a little much and he takes way too many of the annoying callers who are repetitive and boring. But at least the guy knows baseball, and that's more than can be said for most of the hosts on KNBR.

As far as the 'Game' goes, Lund knows sports, but he is terrible because he constantly feels he must cater to the 'younger demographic' with his juvenile treacle. He constantly giggles like a school girl at his inane, inappropriate jokes. What surprises me is that Greg Papa goes along with it, and even encourages it. That's very disappointing. I would have expected more from a guy who is one of the country's better play by play announcers. I guess he just wants to get along.

Another new morning show starts soon with out of town hosts coming in who know zero about the bay area, but that's what we've learned to expect from PD Jason Barrett. He had a good morning show with the 'Rise Guys' but he gave them little time to grow and fired them. They're now back on the air in Sacramento. Then he replaced them with Townsend, who was miscast, and a merry-go-round of amateurs such as Aubrey Huff and that loudmouth know-it-all Brad Gilbert. Haberman and Midlekopt are okay, and Damon Bruce is entertaining, but Damon knows a lot less about sports than he thinks he does. He's way too full of himself and has to tell the world how smart and talented and funny he is, and you know what, a lot of the time he's not.

Overall, the big problem with the game is twofold:
They've got a clueless PD who panics and tries to micromanage as PDs often do, and their signal sucks. I'm glad they have the Oakland teams on their air however as KNBR rarely mentions anything about the A's or Raiders, which is a joke when they call themselves "America's number one sports station." And they can't even talk about those teams on the air? I know they're affiliated with the Giants and Niners, but come on!

Despite their problems, I would rather listen to the Game than KNBR which has really gone downhill since Cumulus bought it and they put that boob Lee Hammer in charge. That guy is clueless and hired some voices that are really annoying such as Kate Scott in the morning. She constantly interrupts Krueger and Radnich and with absolutely nothing to say of value. Then Radnich keeps peddling his tired Las Vegas lounge act and could really care less about sports, (when was the last time he even went to a local game?) As far as midday? Why would anyone want to listen to the backstabbing blowhard Bob Fitzgerald (who knifed Greg Papa in the back to get his Warrior gig years ago) or the hyperactive motormouth Rod Brooks, who loves the sound of his own voice. By far, that is the worst sports program on local radio.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Your rant was bitter and full of vitriol, but I can't say I disagree with many of you observations, and there are a lot of people I know who also agree with you.

Local radio has been ruined...ruined by bottom line, bottom-feeding mega-media companies who have also ruined radio nationwide. I'm amazed that the public isn't up in arms, but most of the public in this country is asleep as they text, talk on their smart phones, Facebook, Instagram pics of our dogs or food, or reply to blogs such as this one. Happy holidays Rich. Keep stirring it up.
