The Heartwrenching Story Of Brittany Maynard

If you think you have problems you might want to reconsider and read this-- the tragic story of Brittany Maynard, who's been diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer.

As SFist points out, Ms. Maynard is going to Oregon to legally commit suicide on November 1.

My first account of this woman's life situation came via CNN--I have not seen any local story about her on TV News which is curious since she's from San Francisco. Other media entities have published her story --but again, not in the Bay Area. Not on TV, not on radio.

Maybe this will change the current state of affairs.

  4. It's more than a powerful story, it's an issue that needs to be discussed and considered legalizing. She's doing an awesome job bring some much needed attention to the issue but I'd rather she spend her remaining days enjoying what she has left rather than being an advocate.I wish her and her loved ones nothing but the best.

  5. It isn't really "committing suicide" when the individual is already dying. It is receiving physician aid in dying. Compassion and Choices is an organization working hard to get a similar law on the books in California so that dying people don't have to move to Oregon or fly to Switzerland. I do not know Brittany Maynard, but I wish her all the best as she faces this difficult moment.

  6. Oh my God...... This is terrible, terrible news. I dated Brittany about seven years ago. She was living near Lake Merritt in Oakland at the time and we had a wonderful relationship. We ultimately ended on very friendly terms and stayed good friends for years afterward, but lost touch when she met her current husband. I was just thinking about her this morning and wondering how she was doing -- this is terrible. She was as beautiful inside as out, happy, intelligent, very outgoing, treated everyone around her very well.... Liked by everyone around her. She was also very much her own person and it doesn't surprise me that she's made the decision that she has. This has me heartbroken -- the world is losing a special person much, much too soon.

  7. This way of thinking "A Planned Death", is going to become more common. With medication and better general health keeping us alive far longer that what some are financially ready to confront, some people will decide that they have simply had enough of this manner of existence , and that they are ready to move on to the next stage, whatever form that may take. As a Catholic, I would think long and hard on whether such a decision was justified, but it's going to be thought about by many, and it's going to be done by a few.

  8. Why does she need a law to commit suicide? If she wants to kill herself, she can. What she wants- or rather what agenda-driven interest groups want--is a law that allows doctors and hospitals to kill their patients without criminal or civil liabilities. Please, don't be fooled!

  9. 9'18 PM, "Why does she need a law to commit suicide? Because she needs assistance to make certain it's done thoroughly, but she does not want to condemn her 'Kervorkian' helper to a life behind bars for breaking out of date laws. She wishes to avoid the end stages of wall to wall excruciating pain. I cannot blame her at all. Who would stand to benefit by allowing the disease to slowly flame out, consuming it's host? Her soul is not troubled, because, she did fight the disease for quite some time. Apparently, the disease won, as sometimes happens.
