KNBR: Thanks Giants.
KGO: Thanks KNBR for allowing us to borrow the 49ers.
95.7 THE GAME: Someone will be fired, soon. And wait until both the A's and Raiders leave.
TALK 910: Breathing.
KSFO: OK, but don't get too giddy, you still suck.

Not a surprise that very few are listening to KNBR 1050. It's simply a throw-away station for 'The Sports Leader.' I turned it on the other day and some dweeb was doing a local mid day talk show and it sounded like college radio. It almost, (but not quite), made me want to turn it back to Fitz and Brooks but nothing, and I mean NOTHING is that bad on the radio!
ReplyDelete"95.7 THE GAME: Someone will be fired, soon. And wait until both the A's and Raiders leave."
ReplyDeleteFired soon? They fired the Rise Guys 6 months ago to get Damon Bruce. Bucher and Huff have both jumped ship. Urban and Steinmetz have both been fired, only to be brought back later. The only firing that needs to happen yesterday is Jason Barrett.
Time will tell if the A's renew their recently expired deal with a station that shows them the same respect as KNBR (almost none) and the Raiders are all but bound for LA. If the A's go with a station people can actually hear coupled with a Raiders move, I expect 95.7 to be an AC station, this time next year.
For KGO, it isn't the old "book," by a long shot. But, a little steady climb is better than decline (WRONG - I haven't worked there since the mid- 90's, and I despise Cumulus).
ReplyDeleteDid anyone hear the new 11 PM, last night? I didn't. Actually, I forgot ... and, syndication doesn't "beckon" to me, anyway. I just wonder what some of the reactions are.
GO GIANTS!
Listened for a few minutes..thought I had heard him before, but didn't recognize the nasally, slightly fay voice I heard...might listen again, but I doubt it. Then, I woke up at 330am or so, so I turned on the radio again...weird to hear Ronn in the middle of the night...I didn't listen long enough to hear if they're editing the every quarter hour traffic out, which they don't do that time of night...also, I'm wondering if they're just giving bonus spots to random advertisers to account for the heavier ad load the show has 9a to 12p?
DeleteKGO's slight rise was not due to talk on weekends. It was the 49ers and Cal. It also was the elimination of Karel for three of four weeks, as well as Thurston, the Chef and more. Sports runs from 2:30 to 10 or 11 pm. Monday Night Football helped as well.
DeleteHe pedals soft conservatism and more subtle anti-obama garbage. Fashions himself as an intellect but is never on the air alone. It's the most repetitive show in radio history, and I'm sure comes in under 200k.
Delete95.7 Is not going anywhere. They can target their sales approach to a very specific demo. I assume the PD is good at getting sponsorships or else he would have been gone a long time ago looking at some of the timing of certain moves. I mean, why the hell would Golden Gate University sponsor Bruce in KC?
ReplyDeleteAs pitiful as terrestrial radio is, the SF market is particularly sad. Hard to believe that with its crappy signals, a non-commercial classical station (KDFC) beats out KFOG. Hard to believe that with its 27 song rotation, LIVE 105 lives to see another day. Hard to believe that THE BONE puts up such decent numbers when it does such a horrible job living up to a classic AOR format. And yet it's never been a better time for radio or for music....just not OTA.
ReplyDeleteJason Barrett is more intent on tweeting and texting and promoting people that no one is interested in listening to, (Urban, Townsend, John Lund, Aubrey Huff, Bucher), than actually find and putting together some interesting sports talk radio programming. The only guys that are worth anything over there are two former KNBR guys, Papa and Bruce. I also find it interesting that they send Bruce to KC and KNBR, which is the Giants flagship, sends no talk show host there. Obviously, the Game is trying harder, but I'm not impressed by Mr Barrett, nor with what they're trying to do. Obviously their spot on the dial is a handicap, but if you want to put a dent into the sports leader, you have to bring in better talent than hacks such as Lund, 'Jeremiah' (who the heck is that guy anyway, he sounds like someone who got put on the air for winning a contest?), and Townsend, who always seems to be hyped up on coffee and feels the need to be practically yelling on the air. Putting him on the in the morning to replace the perfectly good 'Rise Guys' was one of Barrett's worst moves, among many.
ReplyDeleteJeremiah person sounds like a complete moron.
DeleteKNBR sent their morning hosts
DeleteAny thoughts on Batchelor's show on KGO? I listened last night and found it a bit of a snooze. I've been in radio a long time, and I know that change is inevitable...but for someone who grew up on KGO, it's sad to hear them now.
ReplyDeleteThat's putting it mildly. I heard him on KSFO. Theater of the absurd. I get the sense Rupert and the WSJ pay half his salary. Sounds like a made up radio show host from a bad movie. He's the Eric Roberts of talk radio!
DeleteI was driving to work this morning, and had the misfortune of tuning into the local radio to listen to the sports talk shows on KNBR and 'the Game.' I moved here recently from out of town, but I had heard that Bay Area sports fans were passionate and knew what was going on, so I looked forward to listening to what the morning sports shows had to say. This is what I got: On 'The Game' some guy named Townsend was teamed up with what sounded like a fan off the street, a guy named Brad Gilbert, (didn't he play or coach tennis?) and they were guffawing about some nonsense involving foot fetishes and porn. When Townsend said something like: "I'd take the woman's underwear rather than smell her feet," I decided to turn off 'the Game' because it was clear I wasn't going to get any real information about any sports. Over on KNBR however, it was just as bad, as some poor excuse for a sports talk host named 'Pauly' something was telling a story about some woman who had a good feeling that the Giants would win game seven of the World Series tonight because some homeless guy said that they would after she had given the guy a dollar. Pauley then went on to say: "Let's do something nice today for our fellow human beings," or some such drivel, as if that would make a difference with what happens at a baseball game some 1800 miles away. If this kind of crap were put on the radio in places such as Chicago, Boston or New York, these clowns would be laughed off the air. I finally tuned in to KCBS and actually got some sports news from their update guy, a fellow who actually sounded like a trained radio professional named Steve Bitker, but it was kind of sad that the best sports information I got came from a news station!
ReplyDeleteIf I owned a backwater station in the Bay Area, I would try to acquire a decade or so of airchecks from the old KGO, pay an intern to edit them for content, and get the rights to rebroadcast them.
ReplyDeleteInstant ratings boost, free publicity, and great nostalgia.
