Anybody out there still misty-eyed about the radio disappearance of The Loyah--you're preaching to the choir.
Len Tillem has all but abandoned broadcasting. Which is a shame because like many observers I think Da Loyah is always entertaining and funny.
I'm surprised, and have told DA LOYAH himself, Tillem, that given the right direction, he'd be the perfect practitioner a la syndication let alone local broadcast.
But Tillem recently told me he's through doing radio. How much so? Enough to haul out all the broadcasting equipment in his Sonoma-area office.
Oh hell.
Tillem is grouchy. Impatient too. Sure, he can be a pain in the ass--which is his greatest asset --on the air and off. Too bad the loyah has closed the door. Then again, never say never.
Many times, he was far more than "grouchy" and "impatient". He was downright rude to callers - many of whom saw no humor in his demeanor. Additionally (although I am NOT a lawyer), I know - from verification, and speaking with other lawyers, he sometimes gave advice that was just plain WRONG (i.e., based on faulty legal premises). I rarely listened to him when he was on KGOne, and think perhaps no one really wanted him on their airwaves.....hence he's done.
ReplyDeleteSeriously. Have your balls dropped yet. Grow a pair girlie man.
DeleteEh, you're wrong.
DeleteLord knows that this local AM radio market needs some kind of meaningful talent injection and Da Loyah was a longstanding fave of mine for as long as I knew he was on the air. Given the current crappy state of station ownership by bumbling mega-corporations (that don't know their ads from a hole in the ground), I can understand Len's position. He was a genuine talent that got jerked around and he doesn't need either the money or the aggravation that comes with being a corporate pawn. But I'm sure that his ego would enjoy the well deserved attention that the medium can provide.
ReplyDeleteC'mon Len! You were the most entertaining hour of radio, Bay Area or otherwise. The daily podcast was an absolute junky fix for me. Truly miss having him on the air and it's sad to hear that he's apparently hung it up. Really hope he reconsiders.
ReplyDeleteI always felt when I was listening to him that it was like listening to an old friend tell some stories after he had had a couple of drinks. It was very entertaining but I wouldn't act on what I heard by itself. Great attitude, presence, and pace for radio.
ReplyDeleteActually I emailed him a legal probate question. He asked to call me and gave me excellent advice. I offered to pay him for his time. I talked to him for over 2 hours. He refused saying he doesn't practice in my county and was very helpful. He even called me to ask the outcome.
ReplyDeleteNothing but good things for Len from me.
I don't miss him. The last few years he was on the air, Len became very condescending, vulgar and ready to stereotype people with his name calling i.e. "Typical stupid 19 year old kid. You DESERVE to lose your license, what a Dummy!" I stopped listening to his over the top ego trip. A trip taken, always at the expense of someone else's personal dignity. He's lucky no caller stopped by the station to throw a cup of de-caf onto his expensive dress shirt.
ReplyDeleteSmart man. He knows radio is total BS these days. I don't blame him
ReplyDeleteMaybe he is replacing that all that "broadcasting equipment in his Sonoma-area office", with the new internet Comrex BRIC.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your input, Karel. Heard your talk about this last Saturday in "cue". Better idea, why don't you trade him yours -- a trade -- as you won't be needing it much anymore. No stations and, soon, hopefully, no KayGeeOh for you. Your time is ... up. You've long overstayed your welcome. Maybe David G. Hall can get you a part time gig at KFI, since you like it there so much, after they fired you twice. This time, go in on your knees, maybe.
DeleteI was thinking Ryan Scott could give him a busboy job. Perhaps Pat (I'm too important to take my own advice) Thurston can do dishes.
DeleteI have stopped listening to the radio after Len was fired for the second time. KGO has way too many commercials & it's not worth listening even for Ronn or Finney. It looks like Len is done for good this time.
ReplyDeleteThe problem with the loyah being off the air is now the "don't invest and forget" guy does his own commercials, which is only slightly more annoying than the loyah.
ReplyDeleteTillem was brilliant on the radio.
ReplyDeleteI worked in sales at KGO before the purge and for a year afterwards.
Len had the highest rated show on KGO for years.
His ratings were #1 when he was on weekends and when he was on Monday to Friday 12-1PM.
He brought up Owens Arbitron at 12 and when Dr Dean Edell came on at 1 the ratings dropped.
Mickey and Jack loved him. He made the station a lot of money.
We got $600 a minute for him to read a spot live.
He worked for a low salary because the show brought his law practice so many clients.
His practice in Sonoma is still thriving.
Advertisers and the audience loved him.
I could sell his show easy.
He was the most original radio personality I knew.
Al in West Marin.
I did not know he was still on air after they Killed KGOne... I enjoyed his show very much. about "grouchy" and "impatient". HELLO he is a lawyer, there above the law with big egos. That's the way they Roll... If one doesn't know that yet... You will!
ReplyDeleteLen the loud obnoxious NYC Jew Lawyer.
ReplyDeleteGreat radio. :--)
