Meanwhile, On The KBCW 'NightBeat': GAME ON! --Not Really

 GAME ON!? Not Really.

Still dreadful.
Still deeply crappy.
Still woefully executed and produced.
Still silly and totally out of the loop.

TRENDING:

*Major staff upheaval
*EP complains show has no direction
*Already management thinking of complete re-structure
*In-house jokes, chatter leads to speculation about future.
*Sports segment take from staffer: "This is a joke!"

  1. Thank goodness their weekend 10 o'clock newscast is still "conventional."

  2. You keep saying these things, but do you have any evidence? Not that I like the show, but I know people who work there who haven't said there's this dissatisfaction and there are no plans that they know of to make changes. They know they're aiming for the OMG! crowd here, the sort of people who watch TMZ, and that's what they're copying. Except the jokes aren't as funny.

  3. Why is Veronica de la burrito so special? I've seen 30 of.them come and go at KNTV 11 over the years.

    1. "Why is Veronica de la burrito so special?" Well, for starters, she's probably not a racist like you.

    2. Good question. Seems to me in this age of celebrity, they're trying to manufacture a star a la Kim Kardashian.

  4. It's tough for the chiefs at KPIX to euthanize NightBeat. Somebody is going to have to take the blame for this multi-million dollar failure. If the plug is pulled too soon then the responsibility falls on whoever created this abomination. The longer the show airs and the more dismal the ratings become and the more of a joke the show itself becomes allows the finger to point to Veronica. Like another poster asked "what so special about Veronica De La Burrito?" Nothing. And that is the problem. Not only are there tons of LOCAL Hispanic and Asian females who could do a better job reading if KPIX looked hard enough they could find another Jewish/Chinese/Filipino woman to do the job that Ms. Schertz is so miserably failing to do. The other thing is that she maybe a bit of a novelty on the East Coast or at a network level but here in the Bay Area we have a long history of Asian females on the air and as far as I'm concerned few if any have come close to filling Wendy Tokudas stilettos. The single mom thing also seems contrived. Call me cynical but the timing and the choice she made looks opportunistic. So with all the hype, the waiting what did KPIX get? An expensive lesson that todays youth don't want to listen to Mom and Dads Pearl Jam and Limp Bizkit CDs - you can't hop in a time machine and set it to "cool" or "hip".
It looks like KPIX is going to let this failure fall squarely on the shoulders of Veronica De La Schertz. On Friday night I got home after a long and tedious day. I poured myself a large Cutty and water and settled in front of the TV. After the day I had I needed a good laugh and after some channel surfing I realized it was time for Hipster News so I tuned into channel 44 (cable 12!), fastened my seatbelt and prepared for this evening's train wreck. I think the word is schadenfreude - I'm the guy who laughs and says "Enjoy your trip? See you next fall!" when a person has moment of unsteadiness. Lo and behold Ms. Schertz had the night off! In all fairness it has been a tough month of six hour days. Instead there was the dependable, professional, easy on the eyes (and she actually makes eye contact!), local native Juliette Goodrich. Even with all the stupid gimmicks I actually found myself watching the whole broadcast and appreciating it. The worst part of the 27 minutes was the "airport quiz" and both Goodrich and jack of all trades Brian Hackney weathered (no pun intended) the segment with only the faintest embarrassment.
So, it looks like the problem is not just the "cool parents" syndrome but the wrong talking head for the wrong job. The more broadcasts the VDLC misses the better the show will get and then comes the question not just of cancelling NightBeat or "re-formatting" the program but what to do with an on air personality that doesn't have a winning personality? How do they fire a minority single mom who uprooted her entire family (newborn, sick mother) to come to SF and be part of a media experiment? Do they buy her out or does KPIX move around/get rid of established talent to make a spot for VDLC on the regular schedule? Maybe they can have her report on niche topics effecting single mothers of mixed heritage?

    3. and Liz "My daddy got me a TV job" Cook is so much better. Palm Springs to San Francisco jump makes a lot a sense. At least VDLC has been in the business for more than 5 minutes

    4. You sound like a pinhead from San Francisco, a long winded one at that. Earth to San Francisco, you are a minor part of the Bay Area. If you do not like a show or personality, don't watch! Quit your petty bitching and get a life.

  5. What do the ratings say? Is the news doing better or worse with the new format? Everything else really doesn't matter.

    1. That would be the million dollar question. People can bitch and throw all the crap around they want but if the ratings are actually better of "trending" upward then all this doesn't matter. Complain all you want. Mock the show all you want. But if it is doing better than before the change then all this is hot air. If it is in the tank then something will happen.

TV stations don't pull the plug quickly on newscasts. It doesn't happen overnight. Nightbeat will morph a bit, heck it already has. I haven't heard hashtag in a while. They'll give it time and probably make some subtle change to the show. If it is dead in the water in 6-9 months then back to the drawing board.

Whacking people in TV land is easy, it is just a matter of whether CBS wants to pay people to go away. De La Cruz is a nice insurance policy to have from my standpoint. If Elizabeth Cook or the morning girl decide to walk off to the next adventure in life, they have her.

    1. Schertz is her real last name. She changed it to De La Cruz to give her that "exotic" quality on her resume. If it said Schertz and had no photo she'd get fewer return calls. Plus if somebody was looking for a Schertz and she showed up it would be like getting lumpia or egg rolls when you ordered a pastrami sandwich (not too much fat!). She's of Jewish, Chinese and Filipino heritage.

    2. You fucking idiot @4:13. It was her father that changed their family name from Schertz to Cruz. VLDC didn't change her name to Cruz for exotic purposes. Get your facts right numb nuts.
