KPIX Musings Inside The Newsroom; New KTVU GM Might Be Wooing Rosenheim; Larry King About To SF Abode; KGO 'Woo-Woo'; Sacramento TV Chick Under Arrest Had Dinner In Fisherman's Wharf; Monday Starter

 MONDAY STARTER

*PIX STICKS

Inside 855 Battery at KPIX, Allen Martin still can't stand Elizabeth Cook who can't stand Veronica De La Cruz who can't stand her ...more? Cook is nervous about VLDC' increasing influence at the station which has the regular staff on high alert. We haven't even mentioned the general malaise, angst and disgust over the new 10 PM "NightBeat" that is a disaster after only two weeks. One producer at PIX told me the show's "a certified joke" among the rank and file. Wonder if they place the sentiment in the "Two-Minute Mix?" Ba-DUMP-Bump!

*Larry King is about this close to leasing a condo near Green and Webster in the Marina: "San Francisco, hello!

*That Sacramento TV chick anchor under arrest for grand theft had dinner Sunday Night in Fisherman's Wharf. She's already lawyered up with a prominent local attorney proclaiming "she's 100 percent innocent." I hope she left a good tip.

*Speaking of PIX, I assume ND, Dan Rosenheim, is happy at the Battery and Broadway outpost but word on the street is that the new GM from Boston about to lead KTVU is prepared to offer Rosenheim a hefty sum to cross the bay.

*That would make Roberta Gonzales happy.

*Tonight on the NightBeat, Mark Sayre tweets live from the Balboa Café; asks cougars which type of guy they like: slim, trim and maxim? Later, Mark analyses the data and sees if it's trending on Twitter! ...Meanwhile, on Facebook, Jeanie from Livermore posts: "My man takes me for granted and is not emotionally responsible!"

*Has Kevin Keeshan snatched anymore KGO staffers for NBC Bay Area? He's working on one more and it's a biggie.

*Brian Sussman Show on KSFO in a nutshell: Read Drudge Report headlines; play actualities 76 times every five minutes; play false patter with the traffic chick whose voice sounds like the Daly City sewage dept; rip Obama every other break; and repeat same process over and over and over and over...."Thanks Brian." (Genius idea: Play the Sleeptrain sounder another 900 times)

*That idiotic Casey guy at KGO Radio is gone in case you care and I doubt you do. He's not the only one on the chopping block.

*Tonight on the NightBeat, Ken Bastida is in the newsroom with breaking news!, Ken: "Veronica, we're looking at new studies that indicate male subjects can actually improve their sex life by increasing their role on social media! I asked Guy in Burlingame if he believes in the study---well, I tried tweeting more and more and asked my wife if she noticed anything different--she told me I still can't get it up. "...Back to you Veronica. ("Ba -Dump-Bump"!)

*Sure, it would make perfect sense if Tony Bruno, (who's subbing for the vacationing Neanderthals on 95.7, FM, The Game), got the morning show gig but there's a few too many issues...for one, Bruno bounces all over the place and GMs are weary of that personal Bruno peccadillo. 2. Bruno doesn't work cheap and Entercom, which owns The Game, would probably have to shell out about $250G to lure Bruno from Philly, something very unlikely. 3. Bruno's personal feud with Greg Papa, (think Raiders).

*Sarah and Vinnie update: He's been running his mouth again behind the scenes that Sarah is "hogging the show." Well, sad to say, little guy, she IS the show. Here's a tip: take her out to dinner every now and then and she might be want to throw you a bone.

*Any year now the Raiders will be on KGO Radio, you heard it here, first. Helps the Raiders, helps KGO too.

*"Talk 910" -KKSF-AM, Clear Channel's audio Titanic: the new GM has no idea what he's doing which is a prerequisite in local talk-radio. He's so lousy Cumulus might hire him.

*Mike Amatori: KGO Radio's sound guy is currently getting screwed by the company but Mike is a proud man who will overlook the human tragedy.

*Ben Fong-Torres: Think of visiting your grandma's house and she has the plastic draped over the couch with the old National Geographic magazines from 1974.

*Stan Bunger: You know, I really want to be Mike Pechner.

*Steve Bitker: Good morning Stan, Good Morning Susan, Good Morning Kim, Good Morning Mike, Good Morning Doug, Good Morning Hal, Good Morning Rebecca, Good Morning John, Good Morning Paul, Good morning Stan, Good Morning Susan, Good Morning Kim, Good Morning Mike, Good Morning Doug, Good Morning Hal, Good Morning Rebecca, Good Morning John, Good Morning Paul...

*Jim Kozimor: I'm white, bright, and right and for good measure, I'm not an Insider.

*Good marketing award for The Game's 95.7  TV commercials airing on Giants games. The station is the Oakland A's flagship. Maybe someone in PR didn't get the memo.

*Surprise, surprise, surprise: Cumulus is ...once again...airing help wanted ads for salespeople on its iconic stations. Only most salespeople generally like getting paid so expect to hear that ad a lot.

  1. Didn't know about the Tony Bruno vs Greg Papa feud. What started this?

  2. Good post, accurate analysis. Love your post about Sussman, pretty accurate, you forgot his Joe Biden minute, he replays the comments Joe Biden said about 7-11 again and again. He is totally void of any creativity, but so is Gil.

  3. At a time many Americans can't find work the "legendary KGO" is begging people to work. How soon before Owens is having Gavin Newsom do live reads for sales people?

  4. Bastida wears a tie on Nightbeat.. I think that is clearly the problem.

    LOL, yeah, sure.

  6. I've known Kozimor since the San Jose Jammer days. He's a legend in his own mind.
His ego far outweighs his thimble full of talent.

He slurps every guest on Yahoo Sports Live. I have to windex my TV screen after each interview. It could be said that he's a worse hack than me but I am not quite ready to make that official.

  7. Ben Fong-Torres supposedly bedded a young Linda Ronstadt back in the day.
    He gets a life pass.

    2. You never know. It is always possible that she wanted to try something to the beat of a different drum.

  8. Dear Mr. Metheny,

Screw the naysayers and King haters -- bring Larry back, even if just part time. Get rid of the red carpet entertainer. Put Larry on at night or even all night. He wants to do it and he will do it for Russia TV, Carlos Slim or whomever until he draws his last breath. He can do it from his new condo digs. Features too ($$$$$!) Have him do a short sports show "Why I Hate Gary Radnich w/ Larry King". Come on, Kevin. Please? Greg Jarrett would come back, too. He'd like to work with you like before at WGN. But Larry .... who's still at the top of h is game. Check out his stuff on Craig Ferguson on YouTube. Awesome. He could host and be damn good at it.

All you need. Great publicity and couldn't hurt. He's got more money than God. Be fair and Lew might even syndicate him through Westwoon One! You'd be a hero!

If you do, you'll never be called names ever again. Honest. Maybe, then, Rich could get a real job as his assistant instead of playing fifth string in La Selva Beach. Honest as a heart attack. Bring Larry back! Thanks for your consideration!

Excellent work, Rich!!! Be hard to differentiate this from an actual broadcast.

    1. I respectfully disagree, 1:16. I see many NFL teams that are on Classic Rock stations, news stations (WBBM Chicago), sports (KNBR), Country and more successfully. The old WYSP 94 in Philly carried the Eagles for years when Howard Stern did mornings. Now, they are all sports (live and local) 94 WIP-FM and very successful, still, with Merrill Reese, Mike Quick and the "Birds." The NFL is not just for all sports AM or FM.

  12. Listened a little to John and Jeff on 910 this am, they are a tad better than Corey and Joel, but not much, program format seems to be the same: Two guys talking about nothing of real interest, jumping from subject to subject, they sounded like they were taking call, but no one called, not surprised, the station gets worse and worse, I suspect they don't have many listeners. I don't get there format, their ratings continue to drop, and instead doing what a normal business would do, change plans, offer a better product, they stubbornly stick to the same format, and give us the listener an increasingly worse and worse product. Are they suicidal, or just don't have a fu....... clue?

    1. The second response, 1:17. They spend way much time in the conference rooms of Thomas Bain Capital trying to figure out a $20-billion debt load in the next two years before selling off "assets" and they need to look for the next sydndicated offerings of Premier, as Limbaught's contract is up soon, then there's Hannity's deal and don't forget Ryan Seacrest, too. (and hundreds of others.) They have little time to worry about under-performing stations like KKSF and KNEW -- except to, maybe, sell them. That's why the new GM is still finding out where the light switches are. San Antonio won't let him do anything else because it's, well, Clear Channel.

What is the back story between Papa and Tony Bruno?

  15. Incidentally, Entercom is headquartered at the famed 555 (triple nickle) building in Bala Cynwyd, PA - right on the Philadelphia Main Line. Used to work in there. Execs would hire Bruno for "The Game" if he'd just go sit on the curb outside Entercome headquarters and make them have to walk around him. He'd get noticed, eventually. He'd move the needle, until the voice wears thin. Knew him at WFIL Radio and WCAU (now WPHT) during the Frank Rizzo days. Da Mayor Rizzo also did a talk show on 1210 when Bruno was there and said, frequently, "Bruno, you say that again and I will beat you ... so ...dead." I'd like to hear him here. Bruno, that is. He outlived Rizzo, one of Philly's most colorful characters...

  17. Rosenheim going to KTVU sounds wild but is definitely realistic. Many moons ago he went from KRON to KPIX. From a Fox standpoint, it makes sense and saves money. You hire a department head that will bring in people that know the market. You hit the ground running. Plus you don't have spend time AND money moving people from around the country to the Bay Area. And yeah it may be a small thing, but you aren't paying for hotels, air fares and food to interview candidates who aren't in the Bay Area.

    1. Agree that her facial angle is annoying. Cannot be sure, though, whether she is posing for the camera or favoring left eye in order to see teleprompter more clearly. Might she have a visual field/acuity problem?

  20. Cumulus could be an excellent opportunity for the RIGHT salesperson. A tactful pitbull could make a killing and either use it as a stepping stone to a better job with a different media outlet or if he/she are really smart they weather the storm. All things are cyclical and fortunes turn around on a dime. A thick skinned professional would take no prisoners, put up with whatever BS they have to from senior reps and management while stealing every account possible, acquiring new biz and kissing Pig Vomits ass at every opportunity. Divide and conquer and before you know it you'll be using $100 bills for Charmin.
