Ask Rich Lieberman

36 comments:

  1. the tagline on 95.7 PD Jason Barrett's Twitter account is "Adversity causes some men to break, others to break records." What is your opinion of this?

speaking of 95.7, is Tony Bruno going to be their latest ex-KNBR hire?

and was that indeed you, Rich Lieberman, holding court at Dave's bar near the Financial District the other afternoon? We thought we heard you say that Levi's Stadium is already a failure.

    1. A. I have no idea what the hell Barrett is saying; maybe he's complimenting himself b/c they, (The Game), finally, thanks to the A's, broke a 1+ rating. What "records" he broke remains to be seen.

      B. Wasn't at "Dave's bar" near the Financial District.

      C. Tony Bruno is sitting in at The Game this week as the regular crew is on vacation. He'd be better than the guys there already since that show is in deep trouble.

      D. Haven't said a word about Levi's Stadium but it sure looks nice on TV--I wasn't at the bar--maybe it was my understudy, Jeff Garlin.

  2. Do you think Murph and Mac will be on KNBR for the long term? What am I missing, how do people listen to them? Eric Byrnes was on with Damon Bruce the other day, I thought he was still on occasionally with Tolbert on KNBR, what does that mean?

    1. Murph and Mac are making money for KNBR--that doesn't mean it's a good show, far from it, it's terrible. But within the Giants/49ers/Warriors tentacles and the fact that it's a "safe", profitable vehicle that promotes the clients and is advertiser-friendly, I'm afraid we're stuck with them well into the future.

As for Byrnes being on with Damon I too was curious--maybe they're experimenting. One would hope so.

    2. Unfortunately, Byrnes has also been on the MLB network much more frequently of late. He must be picking up some of the time that became available when Mitch Williams took his leave of absence.

  3. The Game is hard to listen to in morning drive, RB is a bore, Towney just plain old obnoxious and Huff is unlistenable. Are they flat lining in ratings?

    1. If they were flat lining they'd be in a far more enviable position then they are now--they've never jelled to begin with to be in a position to flat line.

Bottom line, this is a failure and one of Bennett's many curious moves. Only problem is nixing them means admitting a mistake --my best guess is that the show continues on indefinitely but clearly days are numbered.

  4. I have seen you rip Spencer Hughes regularly and just last week referred to him as a twit or something along those lines. Can you enlighten us as to what happened between you and Spencer? Did he get a little mouthy once? And no, I'm not him and don't know him. I listen here and there.

    1. Nothing "happened" as if that would serve as an impetus for me to rip him.

I rip him because he's a charlatan, is a terrible talk host and a phony at that.

      That's all.

    2. Rich, I think most of the local radio talent in this market are only working because they're cheap. As I said previously, no minds are going to be changed anyway because the inherited money and over credentialed crowd controls the narrative because they're so wealthy and entrenched. They would never tolerate a Jay Severin or Mark Davis on local radio here. Savage gets away with it because his PhD matches their PhDs and he's an older guy with scads of wisdom and life experience.

  5. Rich, I have heard Dan Dibley doing traffic reports late night/early morning on the past few Fridays. Is this the best he can do?

    1. Seems so.
      KNBR won't hire him back.
      Maybe KGO.

    2. Sad. He was much better than Kate Scott.

    3. Dead air is better than kate scott.

  6. Will 910 ever give John Rothman his own show? Gill Gross and the rest of the hosts bring nothing to the plate! Why does this station not take calls?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I doubt 910 will offer John Rothmann his own show simply because they don't have the money and big-picture apparatus for such a move...They don't take calls because in their mind that's not successful blueprint and believe millennials don't listen, therefore won't call.

  7. You and MZ issued a press release the first time Lieberman Live aired on 1340 am last year. Why did you and MZ elect not to make another splashy announcement? I'm happy you're back on KOMY even though you had previously graduated from there! Thank you for engaging with folks like Billy Sunshine. You sound better than ever!

  9. Is "Win Lunch With Brian Sussman of KSFO" a serious campaign?

Originally ending today, auction has been extended to August 10th. According to SleepTrainFosterKids.org, 0% of $5,000. goal has been reached.

Apparently anticipating few bids and a prospective shortfall, Katie Green announced on Thursday that she had been “talked into going with Brian.” Facetiously, Brian referred to her as “bait” and “lure” before whining that “no one wants to go with a middle-aged man.”

Despite worthiness of "Sleep Train Foster Kids" program, who would buy a “lunch date” with either of these individuals much less the pair?

    1. That's why it's always good to take care of family and friends--you might need them some day.

  10. Rich,

If the 95.7 FM has such a poor, uncompetitive signal, why doesn't Entercom purchase 860 from the debtor-in-possession (Comerica Bank) and use it for a simulcast? Additionally, wouldn't that allow E'com to carry both A's & Raiders games live when they run into the inevitable scheduling conflicts. BTW, I can't imagine that Comerica is not a motivated seller and would take less for that property today then they would've when the A's tried to buy it a few years back.

    1. Problem is, Comerica is still hellbound on wanting millions, (roughly 9-10) on its property--in addition, the 860 AM signal; although 50K watts has a directional signal which, unlike KGO/KNBR, can be difficult to hear in many parts of the Bay Area.

  11. If you could be the director of programing for a talk radio station, how would you program the station? (And all hosts you pick must be alive and willing to do radio.)

    1. Not necessarily in order and local either: Alan Colmes, (entertaining and funny); John Batchelor; (love the international angle); John Rothmann, (extraordinarily literate and well-versed on a variety of current affairs); David Weintraub, (underrated, he's grown on me); Tony Bruno, (about as good as it gets on sports and pop culture); Stacey Taylor, (highly informative, underrated and great pipes); That's a good start.

      Delete
    2. Now you like weintraub because he shits on Ronn too? If he keeps up his antics he'll be let go. Did you hear him make fun of him again? No respect. I guarantee he's on thin ice. And I'm not a Batchelor fan at all. Colmes and Rothman I like. I would also add Thurston to the list.

    3. Good list, accurate analysis agree with many of your choices. Certainly John Rothman and Stacy Taylor. I like John Batchelor because he is very intelligent, and talks about things other hosts don't. I'm not into sports, so have no idea about host who does sports radio, but I realize other like sports. I would also add Thurston to the list and Bill Press Press, he knows Washington politics in and out (on par with Rothmann). The few times I listened to Stacy Taylor I really like him, and his take on things.

    4. Why are all your choices for talk show hosts male? Don't you think that part of the problem with AM talk shows is that they are almost entirely dominated by men, and not necessarily very bright ones.

      Delete
    5. I wrote the 7:10 blog, I'm female, I don't think the problem is lack of female hosts, I listed people I would find interesting and listen to on a continues bases. I think they ones I listed are very bright, there are other Thom Hartmann, Randy Rhoades, but they are no longer heard in this area, and although I like them, their shows can be a bit dry, and not all that entertaining. I like Christine, I use to listen to Barbara Simpson, although I rarely agreed with her. I just picked my favorites, based on their show, entertainment value, knowledge of subject, ability to engage callers. I did not base it on gender.

  13. A few things.

    1. Byrnes was promoting his charity game with the local minor league team. Damon invited him to come back on at any time, but no way Byrnes is getting a co-hosting gig.
    2. The Morning crew was off two weeks ago, and you don't have Bruno host a week spending some days with Bucher and some days with Huff when anyone else can fill in. Towny's days may be numbered.

  14. I tuned in to Karel for about two minutes this weekend. He was babbling about public transit in the Bay Area as though he actually lived here. You do not live here and do not represent any valid opinions of this area, Karel. Go back to posing with your motorcycle, idiot.
