THE SKINNY: Cumulus/KNBR greed catch might be indirect benefit to The Game, (95.7), as listeners who are disgusted with barrage of commercial spots, switch to their channel.
A KNBR minion told me, "hey, they're risking it--they know 'Gary/Larry and Tolbert' are the only shows, (besides Giants, of course), they can make money--but they're milking it, way too many commercials."
One Smarty Pants: I'd rather hear the commercials than KNBR's non-Giants programming.

That pretty much sums up KNBR these days... much like ESPN, if they aren't broadcasting an actual game, I don't bother tuning in.
ReplyDeleteOne thing for sure, 95.7 made the wrong move adding an former SF Giants player to the broadcasting booth, on an Oakland A's flag ship station. Now the morning show is 75% Giants talk, 15% A's talk, 10% other. East Bay fans tune out, and I'm sure the PD took this account and figured, " What the hell, maybe we can take a little bite out of the KNBR ratings " in the morning.
ReplyDeleteIt has officially backfired, but is fixable.
Both Gary and Tolbert's show do the same thing. Just before the bottom of the hour they come back for a few minutes and talk about nothing and don't take calls. It seems like someone has decided not to talk about anything in that segment. It is always "Yadayada." It drives me nuts and then there is a 10 minute break and they come back at 20 to the hour. As far as I am concerned they could break at 25 after and come back at 20 to and nothing would be missed. I always switch to something else in that period.

ReplyDeleteKnbr is going thru a ratings bonanza now, so they are selling it to death. It is carrying all of cumulus sf.
ReplyDeleteTheir talk programs are bad, but they don't care as long as giants and niners are pulling in money.
It would help a little if they dumped the sport/traffic updates. Do we really need to take a break from Gary and Larry discussing yesterday's Giant's victory to hear Kate Scott tell us the Giant's won yesterday. I like how Mike and Mike take about five seconds to mention a couple of results at the beginning of a segment and then get right in to whatever they're talking about. Meanwhile over on KNBR, Gary has to complain about stopping for an update, then he has to introduce Kate, then Gary and Kate banter, then the engineer plays the update intro, then Kate has to do an ad for the update sponsor and then finally after all that Kate wastes the next minute or two telling you what you already knew yesterday.

ReplyDeleteIt is just a bunch of commercials and flunkies who don't care about sports.
And knows nothing about sports and can't get a real gig in the Media.
Who even listens to sports shows anyway?
A lot programming is just to fill up time. You have to DVR the shows and fast forward to the interesting bits. It takes some practice, but it's a good way to watch TV nowadays.
DeleteIs it greed or do they need that many spots an hour to turn a profit? In either case - it's not good. Hell, limit the number of spots and auction them off.
ReplyDeleteUnless you like weak commercials or can't change the station, that has to be a ratings killer. Does anyone know how much in billings they average per spot? Seems like they should increase the spot quality and bill a higher amount per spot rather then dilute the cash cow shows. Higher ratings, higher bill rate, equal same or more revenue???
ReplyDeleteMaybe those jillions of ads crammed into the high ratings hours are anchoring larger ad schedules by the same advertisers that run in lower rated time slots.

I've switched to the Game more out of frustration with Gary's constant interrupting of callers and everybody always talking all over each other. KNBR is annoying from 9-noon.

DeleteOne of the advantages (very few advantages) of living in Ukiah is that our Giants affiliate broadcasts on FM. Clearer/cleaner sound and you can hear the crowd. The overloading of commercials on KNBR is exactly why I don't listen to them...at...all. Used to have it welded on my radio dial. I can tolerate Fitz and Brooks but have gotten out of the habit of even checking out their show due to exorbitant number and length of commercial blocks. Good going, Knibber!
ReplyDeleteI used to like listening to the first couple of segments of the show, as the discussions during that time seemed the most compelling. The most topical and interesting subjects were discussed during this time. But for some inexplicable reason starting about a few months ago, the first 45 minutes of the show became boring. Golf, hockey, soccer and obscure national sports news is discussed. The Giants, Niners and Warriors are left for later in the show.

ReplyDeleteproblem is that the Game usually isn't smart enough to not go to commercial when KNBR is in commercial.
ReplyDeleteThat station would do well if as someone else mentioned they did away with the sports updates and just did live reads during a full block of time.
you have two sports hosts who remind you of the Giants outcome every few minutes and what sports fan doesn't know the outcome from the previous game?
I only listen to KNBR now when the Giants game is on and Marty Lurie talking Giants baseball on the weekends. I don't listen to the regular programming anymore mainly due to the increase in commercials per hour. I am not a big fan of the Game 95.7, but, I do listen a little more since they have less commercials.

The only reason I listen to KNBR is because 95.7 is so bad. Murph and Mac were particularly inane this morning - usually due to "Paulie" getting involved more and masturbating with his sound board or his own lame song parodies (which Murphy encourages unfortunately). Murphy's the ultimate homer but at least he admits it so I live with it and he knows sports.
ReplyDeleteA good one this morning: McCaffrey announced it was nice the A's were getting some national attention with Cespedes and 7 attendees. This, coming from the station that only talks about the A's when they're playing the Giants in inter-league. In an interview last week, sports marketer, Andy Dolich referred to the station as "The death star that is KNBR." Perfectly put.
Another thing that bugs me about McCaffrey is he claims to have this musical knowledge about "Rawk." One morning he couldn't even tell the difference between Johnny Burnett's original version of Train Kept a Rollin' and asked if it was the Yardbirds' version. As a musician and rock fan, I consider this an egregious sin of the first order. I picture this record collection where he has every Dead and Springsteen album and about 20 others he got from classic rock stations growing up.
