KGO Radio Is Having An 'All-Star' 'Debate' I Swear I'm Not Making This Up; Thursday Opener

I got a call early Wednesday from a former Cumulus tonsil who informed me about an "All-Star" debate on KGO.

My immediate response was I thought he was joking.

But indeed, no there it is in bright lights with a host and willing participants --at a lovely and convenient time --a Sunday afternoon in June and they're charging too!

And OMG, Ronnnn's even one of the munchkins. (This is too good).

We will try to examine this in every possible, conceivable manner --difficult and funny at the same time.

  1. How can you have an all-star debate when there are no stars left on the station?

  2. Is the new KGO trying to be the "old KGO"? The old KGO use to do all star debates fairly regularly, they also did leukemia cure throng, and the Thanksgiving charities.
I notice the new KGO is doing something with the food bank. Is it possible that after 21/2 years of the new KGO and declining ratings, the management is coming to the realization that a radio station that has a presence in the community foster loyalty from listeners. As for an all star debate with the current hosts, yes it will be a light weight, since there are few heavy weight intellectuals left on the station. Pat Thurston can hold her own, as can Ronn (like him or not, he is not a dummy) Matt Ray might be out of his legue, Brian can debate he is often on Dr. Drew. Karel will talk over everyone, it could be interesting.

  3. Bad monicker. "Radio host debate" more appropriate.
Rich, here is your opportunity to show that you belong. Go, ask a question or two and report back to us.
Not going to criticize something like this before it occurs.

    1. Karel! Please DON'T GO! It's a trap! You're only invited so they can FIRE YOU right after the debate and only have to pay your way to San Jose, not San Francisco.

  5. My first thought: Tell me it isn't so. Second thought: Ronnnnn & Karel at the same event?!? If that's the case, they'll be well separated. I hope Karel's not invited; he will ruin it.

  6. When Bernie Ward was around, these used to be actual debates. I hate what he did and he should have been prosected. I also hate not having a stridently local liberal voice on radio. Also, not religious at all but also miss Ward's God Talk on Sunday's. Too bad he turned out to be a flaming hypicrite.

  7. He wasn't and isn't a hypocrite, he did something that was against the law, and for that he is in jail. He has never denounced his liberal views. I don't think you understand the word hypocrite. Same with some of the Watergate burglars, several ended up in jail because they broke the law, however they were still conservatives.

  8. This All-Star event calls for a cameo from Sexy Sax Man!

  9. I might go if they remove that idiot Copey. Isn't he on just one day a week when noone is listening? Why does the station treat him like he matters?

Please get rid of Copey, the boring whiny squeaky-voiced malcontent.

  10. Why is Brain Copeland so reviled by you Rich? I know, he's not a dynamic, front line talent, but you and the posters are constantly ripping the guy, and recently you took a shot at his daughter who is doing some sort of media internship. Do you have some kind of past beef with this guy, or do you just not like him on the air?

  11. The debate will not be same without Gene Burns, Ray and Bernie. However; if I am able to listen, I will.

  12. @ 9:57 KGO did All Star Debates two times a year up until Citadel took over. They did the last one under Citadel. The last two they did were both $8.10. They used to be free but the last two were paid tickets.

The Cure A Thon was dropped by Mickey Luckoff after the 30th annual one. Luckoff thought 30 years was a nice round number to end them. The Luekemia society was aware that that would be the last one so were all of the employees who had worked on them. With his impending retirement and the change of ownership from Disney to Citadel, Luckoff wanted the Leukemia society to know as early as possible to not be blindsided last minute.

The Cure A Thon was replaced the following year with a charity program for Bay Area Food Banks under the new GM Deidra Lieberman. That is what they are doing moving forward.

The Thanksgiving Charities Drive was started years ago by Bernie Ward and slowly lost steam and donations since he went up the river. Two years ago Cumulus thought two major charity drives a year were too much and did away with Thanksgiving Charities the way we knew it.

Hope that clears things up for you from someone in the know.
