Tori Campbell Safe Overshadows De Wolk Settlement with KTVU; CNN Puts Flatter Game on KRON's Waldman; Michael Krasny/Rita Moreno on KNBR; Harbaugh/49er Dilemma; Shut Up Damon; I'm a Monday Media Notes Kinda Guy

 Monday Media Nosh

*Roland De Wolk's settlement with KTVU/Cox was accelerated by corporate's desire to get the whole Asiana Name Gaffe further in the rear-view mirror. Makes sense. Only news of De Wolk's deal inadvertently brings back memories of what took place on July 12.

Many staffers at KTVU are still perplexed that Tori Campbell, the noon anchor who read the goofy and fake pilot's names, was spared any suspension or termination. "After all, said an Insider, 'Tori actually READ the names!" Incidentally, Campbell herself has tried to shy away from the whole affair--my insiders tell me she has refused to talk about her involvement even privately with close friends. Factoid: Had Campbell not re-upped her contract, (at pretty good money), only months earlier, KTVU most assuredly would have not retained her and when current deal is up in about 2 years, Campbell's tenure at the station will be over.

*DOT...DOT...DOT: How bad does CNN want KRON's Justine Waldman? Enough so that Jeff Zucker personal PR pitchman is planning a meeting with both Zucker and Waldman at a secret SF restaurant. Waldman hasn't commented publicly nor should she but this might be interesting...Weird Radio Moment: KQED's Michael Krasny was interviewing Rita Moreno at the Commonwealth Club. KNBR, as part of its brownie points deal with the FCC, broadcasts all CC's meetings on Sunday morning and sure enough Krasny's terrific interview was heard over THEE sports leader in the wee hours Sunday...When sports reporters and sports media delve into the news arena, i.e, the sordid Aldon Smith/49ers DUI affair, it's best they left it to NEWS--sports guys, for the most part, don't know how to report news stories...Jim Harbaugh doesn't really like dealing with the media--that's a given. Only if the boys don't play for the coach and the team declines, don't expect the local scribblers to feel too bad...Monty on KGO wasn't a bad Monty personally--just not a good LOCAL mix nor an especially good talk host even on largely irrelevant KGO--moreover, his overt "Christian"-oriented drive was completely out of place in the Bay Area. Good marketing, Jared...Power couple media supreme at Original Joe's Sunday night: "Hey honey, do you really think I still look good?" I couldn't hear the rest but the family sitting right near the counter were borderline hysterical. I tried to intervene but was kidnapped by a plate full of lasagna --more important anyway...KRON's News Director, Aaron Pero, once had a shouting match with Waldman that left her coming out of the office in tears. Maybe CNN doesn't have to woo Waldman that much. Then again, I'm told she really loves the Bay Area. Stay tuned...Ward Bushee, the big suit, has retired from the Chronicle. There's more to that if you know how the newspaper biz is faring...Just STFU already, please: KNBR's blowhard Damon Bruce...CSNBA's Mindi Bach--the antithesis of sweet-Nothing, Kate Scott: hard-working, original, straight-forward and good. If Scott has ever had an original thought, talk to me. She should watch Bach and learn a little.

FINALLY...I'm mulling over a number of things. Once the dust settles, I'll shoot off a note here and give you the details. My agent, Bombastic Mushkin says things are fluid.

OK, seriously now .

  1. by telling Damon to "STFU", are you "dishing dirt" or is this more a personal vendetta? Is that what the blog is becoming? Monty is a "Christian?" That's news. Never heard him do anything religious.

    1. I don't care for Monty's show, however although I have heard him mentioning several times that he is a Christian, I don't think his show reflects a particular "Christian slant", not the times I have listened to him. I often turn on his show, although I rarely listen to his whole show, either because I work, or because he cannot hold my attention for 3 hours.

  2. How about more comments from you Rich about "that annoying, clucking hen" known as Amy G?

  3. So much for that overhyped KSCO announcement. I listened to MZ's show and there weren't any details. Just vague references to moving your show. Sounds to me like they're pulling your chain big boy!

  4. Rich, what's with the waldman stuff? Seriously nobody cares! The sooner she leaves the better. She needs to return to journalism 101 and take a speech class as well.

    3. bashing militant muslims who murder people is wrong? i can name quite a number of hosts who do it over at cumulus. i don't see the problem.

    4. No he isn't gone yet, heard part of the same program, as usual he came of as an idiot, or to be polite an intellectual lightweight.
He did say he believed 99.9 % was good, honest hardworking people (same stats he uses about local police), but admitted to feeling nervous when he spotted someone who he thought had a "muslim" beard, what is a muslim beard? All the 19 hijackers from 9/11 was clean shaved, dressed very western, and although they might have looked someone middle eastern I defy anyone to figure out if the were Arab, Jewish or Hispanic based on their clothes and looks, so at usually his argument does not hold up.

    5. No bashing militant muslims is not wrong, but Monty did not make that distinction, which is often the case with Monty, he has trouble delineating what exactly his point is.

  6. Waldman BFD. Who the hell is she supposed to be and are we supposed to care or less fortunate if she leaves? Man we dgaf. Kron is a have been station and that weak reporter had her shot and f'd up big time. Darya knocked her clear back to reporting at night. Lol

  7. Kate Scott is better suited for college sports. She seems to full of herself listening to her own voice as she attempts to land a national gig. She adds absolutely nothing to the show and actually brings it down with her unnecessary banter.

    1. Thirty year vet here. Don't specifically know about Waldman, but often it's the News Director wants to bed someone. Really, that simple. Happens a lot more often than you think. Same in the entertainment industry, of which news is a branch, really. Ever noticed how certain actresses show up over and over again even though 1) they're mediocre and 2) their movies generally only do so-so (or they had a big hit ten years ago and nothing since, but they're still being shoved in your face)? They're good in bed and they're easy to get in bed. That's how you make it today. Talent is no longer necessary. Only chumps still believe the United States is a meritocracy.

    2. @2:47 "That's how you make it today. Talent is no longer necessary."

30 year vet, people have been sleeping their way to the top since the dawn of time. In ALL industries. Where have you been?

    3. @ Anonymous at 2:46. Ok, I'll take your word for it. I thought Justine was married. But I guess anything is possible. That must be how someone like Tina Fey (and her shadow, Amy Poehler) continues to be on TV, though personally, I don't think she is very funny

Aaron Pero's had that shouting match with virtually everyone at KRON. The news business is filled with stupid, smug dickwads who think they know something when they lack even the skills to run an ice cream stand but even in this universe, Aaron Pero stands out as the biggest, back-stabbingest, anchor-fuckingest, wife-cheatingest piece of shit there is. In an industry filled with truly horrible people, he has no friends, Even the vilest of the vile avoid him.

    2. Good for Justine Waldman if she Makes it to CNN and goes on to bigger and better things. She has a direct sharp east coast style. I picture these days Grant Lodes being the buffer for Waldman @ KRON studios from any more harassment from Aaron Pero.
Grant Lodes has that " Giovanni Ribisi from the "Boiler Room" swagger hes not gonna let Vin Diesel Strong Ass him around like Aaron Pero did former KRON anchorman Michael Kelting. I can see Darya Folsom being a little Tipsy in the morning before 9AM just to get past the first few hours of the Broadcast.

  22. I like Mindi Bach's no-nonsense interview approach. She seems to ask thoughtful and good questions with a friendly demeanor with players and coaches.

I think Kate Scott's sports knowledge is pretty good, but she always seems to be prepping for an ESPN job by doing her best Gayle Gardner (remember her?) and Linda Cohn. I wish she'd be more natural and lose the "radio voice" every once in awhile.

  24. I know what you mean about the 'overt Christian' thing on KGO. Reminds me of the nauseating Jewish stuff Ron Owens and Michael Krasny produce all too often. Ugh...spare me already.

    1. I don't hear any overt Christian "thing" on KGO, Montemayor like to tell us he is a Christian, good for him, I don't care for him as a talk show host, however I have never heard him lecture on religion, or saying anything about everyone should be a Christian. Not sure what you mean about the nauseating Jewish "stuff" on Ronn' s show, Ronn is Jewish, but he rarely talk about himself and religion, he is a defender of Israel, as is many people who are not Jewish, what is so nauseating, it almost sounds like you find a Jewish host nauseating, which sounds very anti-Semitic. I'm neither a Christian nor Jewish, in fact I don't really have a religion, since I consider myself an agnostic. I found someone like Pat Robertson and his preaching nauseating, and if someone Jewish would preach about Judaism the same way I probably would found that nauseating. However listening to a host who discusses many different subjects fairly impartial, I really don't care about the religion or lack of. Why do you?

  25. Radnich was talking about Lieberman this morning - saying how he persevered through about 6 years of criticism, and now has a shares a friendship & "media bond" with Richie. Then Kate Scott chimed in that she could only hope for something like that to happen with her. Larry pretty much remained silent....

and regarding Damon Bruce....the worst sports talk show host in the Bay Area, which is really saying something when you have putrid "talent" like John Lund, Murph & Mac, Fitz & Brooks, O'Connell & Steinmetz, etc, etc.

  26. Catching-up on a couple of weeks of posts - I have disliked Monte/Monty for a variety of reasons, and am super glad he's moving along, as I could only stand brief bouts of listening to him; but, to his credit, while he didn't hide he's a Christian, I never heard anything overt about it at all, let alone that there was a religious drive to his schtick. Unless he changed to that in his last few weeks at KGO, when I only heard a few minutes here or there?! That would have been surprising, and disappointing to me.
