KPIX-KRON Shoutfest at Grumpy's; KRON's 8PM News Has Daylight; Amy G; Darya Folsom; Carolyn Tyler; Cheryl Jennings; Monday Media Nosh

 Monday Media Nosh

*Four screaming matches in about an hour the other day at Grumpy's between KRON and PIX lower-level inmates--two reporters and two managers--it was NOT about the business. It began as a joke about who's "team" is in worse shape. Don't laugh at this: KRON is beating not just PIX, but almost all the others in the early evening and that 8 PM newscast is quietly getting decent enough numbers that salespeople are earning a buck or two.

Moreover, Catherine Heenan and Pam Moore are old-school TV anchors who have name recognition and yes, looks too. Given the fact that that still counts says something about viewing habits in the city. I always thought an 8PM newscast was Death Valley time but given the fact that a lot of people don't watch network TV shows here and like earlier local news indicates an audience that's out there. Don't underestimate KRON--did I say that? Yeah, I did.

*It's fashionable to make fun of  Amy G on Comcast but the real story is this: The Giants and Comcast know she's lightweight and overly perky and it is that reason why she's still on--she's lightweight, perky, a human good-luck charm and doesn't ruffle any feathers other than people who are annoyed that such a nothing could be on basic cable TV.

*Darya Folsom: She knows what she's doing. Good marketing, Darya. I admire your ability to twerk the SF Bay Area.

*Screw the PC crowd: Why is Carolyn Tyler undervalued at KGO and Cheryl Jennings over-exposed? Because they think Jennings has some inner Diane Sawyer and Tyler is just OK. I smell something rotten there. Figure it out.

*Damon Bruce recently ripped the Chronicle's A's beat writer, Susan Slusser, because she signed on to KNBR little rival, 95.7 The Game. Bruce belittled Slusser, I'm paraphrasing: "Ok, Susan, glad you're going to no where." In fact, Slusser is getting PAID! at The Game. Slusser is not alone. Almost all local writers get paid a small fee to do 5-10 minutes on the sports stations--some get more than the others, depending on name and affiliation.

*Guy Haberman: Slightly better than the Sunday afternoon contest winner buffoon.

*The Game: Does the PD have pictures? Has to.

  1. Bruce ripping Susan? What a jerk. She's the President of the BBWAA, well respected, she's on mlb network almost every day, and has been the A's beat writer for the SAN FRANCISCO Chronicle for almost 20 years. She signed with the A's FLAGSHIP station. Get over it, Damon.

  2. What is it about Guy Haberman that bothers you? The lisp? Or the stutter?

  3. Mr Bruce berating Ms Slusser for "going to nowhere?"

According to the latest ratings Rich provided, 95.7 FM, while near the bottom in the Bay Area with about a 1.0-1.2 over the last three months, more than doubled KTCT 1050 which "pulled" a 0.4-0.5 audience share.

That puts Damon south of nowhere. South of Nowhere. A good title, no?

  4. Darya twerking? I now need to click on one of these 1,000+ articles to see what it actually is. Never cared before. Where can I find Darya twerking? I love me some Darya.

    1. People have been "twerking" since I was in middle school. I'm in my 30's now. Miley Cyrus does it once on TV and now everybody's an expert. *shaking my head.* It's a sure sign the disgusting "trend" is dead. So for that, I'm grateful. But really, when people like Rich are mentioning it, wow it's really not cool anymore. And by the way, Miley Cyrus would have REALLY caused an uproar if she did the dance correctly. Just look up "twerk team" on YouTube, parents would have protested. Haha!

  5. Switched to 95.7 The Game and have never gone back to 680/1050. Enjoy Susan's insight and articles. How many times did Bruce have her on his program? crickets... Go A's !

  6. Thanks god we won't have to watch Amy G. waving to the crowd again this October from a car during a Giants' victory parade downtown, like some cutesy Rose Bowl princess. Where did she get off being a part of the Giants winning the title? As you point out Rich, her talent level is small market at best, and her annoying, perky, soccer mom persona is not only a distraction but a waste of time. Why do Larry Baer and Ted Griggs happen to think she's got talent? Next thing you know she'll be hosting a talk show on KNBR!

    1. Not sure if you're the one but I LOVE the Amy G comments from the person who always rips her on here. I always end up laughing. The person seems so insightful which lends credibility to the comments in my eyes. That being said, I do tend to agree with the comments.

I have to laugh myself that they always just refer to her as Amy G. They know their white, Marin county season ticket holders don't want to see a Hispanic surname day in and day out. I don't.

    2. Amy G -- lightweight and airhead -- only in America!!

    3. The Giants will win fewer than 80 games this season. Time to get a new good luck charm!

  7. I like The Game. It's way better than KNBR, which continues to perform fellatio on the last-place Giants. How can any right-minded sports fan respect that garbage? Oh, and Damon Bruce is a douchebag.

  8. Wait a minute, Damon Bruce still has a radio show?

Where can I find Darya twerking? #priceless

  9. Did you see that Jerry Seinfeld is joining the New York Mets broadcasting crew for their telecast of tomorrow's Giants-Mets game from Citifield? I wish the Bay Area could get this. Seinfeld is funny and probably more enjoyable than listening to the two homer bromancers on CSN. He'd be funnier than the egotistical fat man on the radio. Grab some pine, meat and adios!

  10. Cheryl Jennings is NOT overexposed...

  11. Pam Moore has a few too many miles on her -- not attractive enough to draw viewers any longer. Catherine Heenan retains the sultry, Kim Novak-like persona that makes able-bodied men tune in.

    1. Hey there 5:54,

You've got a right to your opinion, but, please: "Pam Moore has a few too many miles on her"???

You've got to open your eyes, dude! Pam, and Catherine Heenan, and Vicki Liviakis are real live intelligent women. Ever met one of them before? I have.....

I don't know how much experience with women you yourself have had, but it's the SMART ones who are the FOXIEST and most SEXY! Why do you think local viewers have kept watching them over the years?

KRON is so lucky to have these three aces on their newscasts. These ladies are not interested in image (although they are certainly attractive). They're interested in reporting the news.

I hope all three of these journalistic thoroughbreds have careers as long as they want, and the greatest success!!!

A side note: I've always referred to Catherine Heenan as "The Brain". The moniker suits her because she's intelligent, poised, and well-spoken, but it's also a tribute to the old WWF wrestling manager Bobby "The Brain" Heenan. Any relation, I wonder? Or is the name common?

    2. Hey there 10:23 -- I never said Pam, Catherine, and Vicki were not intelligent. I'm sure they are, but this is news reading, not rocket science. Most female reporters/anchors do this well, with the possible exception of Tori Campbell and Rebecca Gonzales. The SMART ones do not draw the male viewers.
The FOXY, SEXY ones do. Nothing against Pam personally, but I much prefer to look at Catherine or Vicki. If you want, however, examples of "journalistic thoroughbreds", you should consider the field reporters who do "live" accounts on a daily basis -- far tougher than sitting at a desk reading a script. Two of the best are Tara Moriarty of KTVU and Amy Hollyfield of KGO

    3. I've got nothing against intelligent, sophisticated women. SOME can be very sexy indeed. Vicki is the perfect example. However, the other poster is right about Pam, the miles are showing and have been for quite some time. If you watch the news for the babe factor then Pam is not it. Sorry. Catherine is intelligent and looks good too but she gives off a vibe similar to my living room - preferring carpet to hard wood floors.

  13. Rich,

Any comment on the return of Art Bell to the air waves?

  14. Rich, who are all the new reporters on KPIX, I see a lot of new faces over there.

Carolyn Tyler does deserve more, but at this point in her career she is most likely biding her time, until she retires.

  15. I really get a kick when Paul G. who is Amy's husband, and also works on Comcast, gets mad and defends his wife on Rich's blog. I certainly understand him sticking up for her, but he has to understand that the 95 percent of the folks who watch Giants baseball find his wife annoying and amateurish. The 5 percent who like her are not real baseball fans. 'Amy G.' has that nasal-teenage sounding voice, and it's quite plain that the woman has never learned use her voice properly. She needs to take a public speaking class. Plus her inane questions and vapid remarks make her sound like a complete ditz. She obviously knows very little about baseball, based on the nonsense that she's constantly talking about. You'd think the woman would at least pick up the basics of the game after having been at the park these last several years. In shortl Amy G. is providing a disservice to women who want to get into broadcasting. She ought to pay attention to pros such as Mindy Bach who look and sound as if they've actually had some professional training. She actually might learn something! Amy G. looks if she came out of some school called: 'Blonde ditzes who want to work in TV.'

    1. Mindi has a very strong academic and athletic background!

    2. She's a good looking woman I'll give her that much. I'm guessing the Giants want a girl that is easy on the eyes that will appeal to the thousands of bandwagon fans they tend to attract (this from a lifelong Giant's fan). They also shortened her last name. Gee I wonder why?

  16. CArolyn Tyler is very picky about her assignments and that hurts her. She's a prima donna. So is Cheryl, but in a different way, one that management can work with.

    This a new thing? Why?

  19. Since the idiots in charge have decided to insert a female into the coverage of every sporting event, I think Amy G is just fine. She talks about fans, feelings, and frivolities without ever once insulting viewers by pretending to provide analytical content -- something that sets her apart from the ubiquitous sideline reporters at football games.

But, truth be told, I don't really get to hear Amy much. My wife, a lifelong athlete, insists on hitting the fast-forward every time the baseball or football crew cuts to any female broadcaster. I guess she hates to see her gender embarrass itself.

  20. like Amy G.. KRON 8 PM ratings will they suffer after the Fall TV season starts... probably.. ABC Cheryl and Carolyn two Alpha females is there really room for both of them?

  22. Geez...a lot of Amy G. 'haters' come to this website! I am a female and I happen to like her 'womens' point of view.' She gives us info that women fans find interesting, and by the way that's a good thing, since we make up about 40 percent of the Giants' audience.

Plus I loved it when Amy G. took her well deserved bows in the car at the parade celebrating the Giants winning the title last year. She earned her recognition and a spot in that parade just as much as Miller, Kruk, Kuip and Flem!

You go girl Amy G! We also think your husband Paul is sexy!

    3. Jon Miller: 2010 Ford C. Frick Award recipient.

Duane Kuiper: Played 12 years and 1057 games in the Majors, and a strong Ford C. Frick Award candidate.

MIke Krukow: 124-117 W-L record in the majors (quite an accomplishment considering how many bad teams he played for), and a former All-Star who earned a complete game victory in his only playoff start.

Dave Fleming: Master's degrees from Stanford and Syracuse. A bright and versatile announcer.

Amy G: "They all look like fastballs to me." But she is perky.

  23. Female perspective...I loathe the token-ism of having to have the woman in the stands, the woman on the sidelines, the woman PA announcer when many times, it just doesn't SOUND GOOD! There are exceptions out there of course, but most of the time, it's just plain ole lame. Amy G doesn't bother me that much, though her voice is terrible. The job is meant to be "fluff" reporting and by gum, that's what you get. I find it all a gigantic distraction to the game. "Let's cut away from the game for this momentary bunch of crap, Amy?" "Thanks gentlemen...blab blab blab blab" Meanwhile you're getting nervous they're not going to wrap in time and miss something on the field. But apparently some of my sisters like her schtick. To me, it not only adds nothing, it subtracts from my enjoyment of the game. Post game interviews, I'm okay with however. It's not super technical but that's fine. She doesn't need to be. She's just there to catch the flavor and I think she actually does an okay job with that.
