John Rothmann: The Perfect Host For KGO's 10-1 PM Saturday and Sunday Time Slot
Rothmann...intellectually honest, phenomenal presidential historian, Middle East expert extraordinaire and a master on politics--with a great set of pipes to boot.
What I like about John Rothmann is that he is so likable! He rarely will shut down a caller because of a difference in opinion. He seems to enjoy having callers with a different opinion without being patronizing nor condescending.
Hm no. When Rothman goes off on the Muslim Brotherhood or Hezbollah while at the same time refuses to discuss the Irgun or the Stern Gang you see through his pro-Israel bias. Come on. This is so true that Rich will censor it.
No KGO is not all news, they have Ronn during the week, who they could have let go after this contract was up, they didn't because he gets good ratings, they also have almost all talk Saturday and Sunday, just because they made mostly stupid decisions, we can hope they might make an intelligent one for once.
A lot of stations breaking down doors to get Rothmann. Why is that? In a world that now has outlet after outlet, he has no outlet. Why is that? A RL endorsement will pretty much guarantee he won't get hired. Nice work, Rich!
It would be an odd time for him to be on. Not sure what listenership he'd get. And besides they fired him not long ago. It's not like they didn't have a slot for him and now they do. I would guess they still want someone YOUNG and therefore cheap. Hasn't that been their direction since the massacre?
Same management brought Melanie Morgan back to KSFO, she was fired. One can hope they learned a few things. People still like intelligent talk radio, bringing a once popular host back will increase there ratings, I can't imagine Monte got good ratings, not based on this blog. I'm sure they won't pay him what they did before, Melanie probably did not get what she was earning before she was fired. I think all hosts realize the reality of salaries in talk radio these days, unless you are Rush Limbaugh.
Lieberman hates anyone who is actually popular so he praise boring, unpopular people like Rothman to create the phoney impression that he possesses eclectic, discriminating taste.
Refer to the blog by Mike Pechner, who use to work at KGO. You have no idea what you are talking about, John is not unpopular, he has a big following, just listen whenever he sits in for Gil on 910. He is far from boring, anyone who thinks that is not very, deep, intelligent and educated. Sounds like you should listen to Frosty, Maureen Langdon or Monty until he leaves.
I am very lucky to have Mr. Rothman as a friend and colleague and he is sorely missed by thousands of listeners throughout the Bay Area and Northern Calif. He would be perfect at any time slot on KGO. Hiring John would show Cumulus has heart and a grasp of its audience if they choose to hire him. he is far and away the most intelligent and insightful person on the radio.
I used to listen to KGO AALLLLLLLL the time till The Massacre. It's garbage now; there's NO good talk radio. I'd listen to John Rothman, tho, in a heartbeat. Smart. Interesting. Educated. A real gentleman. OH, for the good old days.
I don't know if Rothman would want to go back to work for Cumulus, the company that sent him and many others packing. He loves doing talk shows, but would he take a part time job on the weekends? He certainly would be a major improvement over loudmouth-know-it-all, "my own farts don't stink" Tim Monte-manure!
Ward gets out on 12/21/2014. Possession of child porn has a negative stigma that I doubt he'd be able to get a talkshow job on a local radio station. Who wouldn't give it to John Rothman over Bernie Ward?
Rothman would be even better in a weekday afternoon or evening time slot. I'm a conservative and I value John's thoughtful and knowledgeable perspective even if he is left of center. Let's face it, KGO's news drone is no match for KCBS. They need to return to talk, which was their past strength in this market. I vote for Rothman as a start.
Worked with John. Class Act. Perfect for Saturday 10-1 but not much else. Had his break 10-1 after Bernie. Very low numbers, talks about the Nixon White House just about every shift. If he did "work" for Nixon wouldn't he be about 80 something? Just wondering.
No he would not, and does not talk about Nixon that much, just mentions that he worked for him, and that he knows politics in and out, which he does, besides knowing presidential history, since both is a passion of mine, I love John, and rarely gets bored when he is on. Nixon was elected in 1969, John in his sixties, early or middle, he could easily have worked for Nixon as a young intern between 69 or august 74 when Nixon was forced to resign. You say John is a class act, I agree, however in my book people with class do not lie. Are you saying that Montemayor or Maureen Langdon has decent ratings, if so, god help us.
Wow! Hard to believe Lieberman censored my post just because I suggested Rothmann debate the likes of Chomsky and Finkelstein. That's why Rothmann's show was always such a bore: he refuses to have anyone on who would give an opposing view on the situation in the Middle East.
You make it sound like John only talked about one subject all the time, yes he talked about Israel, but he certainly devoted more time to US politics, he would have many subjects on local issues such as: the new Bay Bridge, local SF elections, or statewide elections, he often did shows that had to do with issues important to the Bay Area. If you don't like his stand on Israel and Palestine turn the dial when he talks about them. Although John is very pro Israel (as am I) I believe he is fair, and he would always take calls from people that disagreed with him. In fact often the majority of his callers would disagree with him, some were even anti semitic, I think you being unfair, or are you only interest in a host who agrees with you all the time?
John Rothmann is thoughtful and intelligent - which is why he hasn't landed a full time gig on commercial radio. He would be good for the weekend slot, but again, he may be too cool and thoughtful for many of the bozos who call in.
I always enjoyed listening to Mr. Rothman, when he did fill-in slots, all around the clock on KGO. I was pleased that he was, finally, designated to take the 10 PM time slot.
My pleasure faded when he began (almost) every program, with a focus on Pakistan ... or, "Pock-ee-staun," as Mike Amatori satirized in a promo.
It would be wonderful to have Mr. Rothman back on a regular basis, if he can/will share so much of his knowledge and passion for US history, not to mention bits from his astounding recorded library.
However, all Pakistan, all the time, won't fly with me, again.
I became very spoiled with the "old" KGO. I've gotten pickier, since "the bloodbath." I'm not as forgiving. Any given host has about 4 minutes to keep me from tuning out.
I listen with a passion to John Rothmann whenever possible, and although he is more knowledgeable and have more insight into foreign affairs than most hosts, I have never found John to be a one subject host. If he spend several programs on Pakistan, it is because that nation is a hotbed, and what happens there can have a ripple effect, not just in that region, but on the US as well. Some bloggers here have complained that John talk about Israel all the time, some say he is always talking about his time working for Nixon, others think he is always bashing Hezbolla and Muslim brotherhood, right there you have about 3 or 4 subjects that listeners "perceive" he talks about all the time. Obviously this is not the case. I think often listeners get impatient when a host talks about a subject they don't care about, and if they hear that same subject 2 or 3 times in row, or in week, all of sudden it is perceived that the host ONLY talks about that particular subject. Try to be a little more patient. If you only give a host 4 minutes you are really just listening to the intro, often a host will introduce something, then take a few calls, and if there is not enough interest, move on to another subject. Do you prefer Gil's format on 910, talk to an expert for a few minutes, give his own analysis, then move on to something else, recount some story that most of us has already heard or read on the internet. Then tell some stupid story from ages ago that has no relevance to anything, he will do some dumb criminal stories, none which I ever find interesting or entertaining, he will also have some school stories. I don't know what his show should be called, but it is not a talk show, he never take calls. Although Gil is intelligent, and does good interviews, and can explain a complicated subject so most people can understand it, I find it extremely boring and repetitive I cannot listen for long. Did John sometime have a guest on or picked a subject I didn't care about, of course, but no host can entertain all the people all the time. You say you got spoiled with the old KGO, but that format was based on picking a subject listeners cared about and then getting interested callers on, 4 minutes does not give a host a chance. I not only want to be entertained, I would like to learn something as well.
Rothmann isn't dynamic and everyone knows it. What other host, local or national, discusses the Middle East, Israel and other Muslim countries over and over? Even Savage, who I find pretty unlistenable these days, rarely talks about it (although I could be wrong since I've tuned him out as well). How is Rothman entertaining beyond interviewing people about world events? And is that really hard to do? There's a reason he has never had an established M-F opportunity, and it's certainly not going to happen with KGO weekends. His kind of talk is on par these days with UFOs. That's why John Bachelor exists.
It's not about what he does well. I don't think people debate that. It's all the things he can't do which is what is needed.
KGO needs to put on a diverse host, which if anything, Monty was. The successful hosts can discuss any topic.
Monty was a diverse fool, he is a lightweight, you haven't listened to Rotmann enough, yes he talks politics, both local, international and national, but he talks about many things such as: school and the school system in CA, healthcare, the Bay Bridge, many local subjects, which I don't care much about, since I'm a political junkie. What is dynamic? Is Monty dynamic, or Savage with his rants and screaming? I don't think so. Certainly Gil and Frosty is not dynamic. John had a show Monday through Friday from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. after Bernie was forced to resign. I don't remember John doing that many interviews, but he never had a lot of guests on, if you don't like his show turn the dial. However, there are lots of former KGO listeners who miss John and other hosts who had intelligent shows, which is getting harder and harder to find.
He would be perfect. It would be phenomenal to once again enjoy his expertise.. his calm voice.. his grace.
ReplyDeleteI agree John would be a great replacement
ReplyDeleteMonty will not be missed.
Not likely!
ReplyDeleteWhat I like about John Rothmann is that he is so likable! He rarely will shut down a caller because of a difference in opinion. He seems to enjoy having callers with a different opinion without being patronizing nor condescending.

DeleteWhat a wonderful idea! John Rothmann back at KGO 810. It'll never happen. KGO is all news all the time now run by a bunch of fat, ugly retards!!!
ReplyDeleteNo KGO is not all news, they have Ronn during the week, who they could have let go after this contract was up, they didn't because he gets good ratings, they also have almost all talk Saturday and Sunday, just because they made mostly stupid decisions, we can hope they might make an intelligent one for once.
Deleteand sexy to boot! ♥
ReplyDeleteA condition of Chester Wards release from Federal Day Care, will be the he find a Job KGO anyone?

ReplyDeleteHe'd triple (at a bare minimum) the station's current combined talk show host intellect level.
ReplyDeleteIt would be an odd time for him to be on. Not sure what listenership he'd get. And besides they fired him not long ago. It's not like they didn't have a slot for him and now they do. This is the same time slot he had before he was fired. I loved it and have really missed his intellect.

ReplyDeleteRothman would be far more interesting if KGO mgmt could admit their huge mistake and put him on from 7:00 to 10:00 pm M-F
ReplyDeleteOr even 10 pm to 1 am M-F
Heck, why even revert to the old time slots, 8 to 11 or 9 to 11 would be fine. Avoid their conflict with Savage's time.
