Longtime Bay Area TV Anchor Jerry Graham dies; Former KRON Personality hosted Popular "Bay Area Backroads"

Longtime Bay Area TV anchor Jerry Graham died of an apparent heart attack Monday at his Santa Cruz home. He was 78.

Graham spent the bulk of his career at KRON where he anchored on weekends and was host of the popular show, "Bay Area Back Roads." He also had a stint at KPIX and was briefly the GM at the old KSAN Radio.

But it was Backroads that vaulted Graham into local celebrity status in the Bay Area. The show won numerous industry awards and was a favorite among viewers with its lavish video homage to various Bay Area locales.

Graham was well-liked and had an insatiable giggle and well-established personality. He is survived by a wife and has three children.

Graham would have turned 79 on Tuesday.

  1. So, Rich, why keep harping on what you admit is "no news"? Makes no sense.

  2. Rich -

Why are people "morons" who disagree with you?

    1. Are you really going to bitch about something Rich said or did on a post about the death of a well respected Bay Area journalist that has nothing to do with it? You have problems.

  3. Jason Collins is just an old player with nothing to loose. He's just increased his marketability. He should be ashamed.

    2. Now, wait a minute. That's not fair. Maybe Collins really has something "to loose". Apparently, something was "to loose", like, his big mouth.

  5. Jerry Graham was the original host of Back Roads, and was he great! One day I was driving down Bayshore Blvd. in the City, & looked over in the car next to mine, and it was Jerry...He gave me a dirty look, but I guess people were always invading his privacy. Godspeed, & my deepest Condolences go out to the Family & Friends of Jerry Graham.

    1. He took a lot of flack for driving around in a Volkswagen Rabbit convertible . Sort of a girlie car. He must have thought another joke about his car was coming...

    2. So did Mac and Mutley take over after Jerry? Anyone want to give a little timeline. I remember both hosts but not the specifics.

  6. Very sad, and my deepest condolences to his Family. His Backroads show was well shot and well written. He had no ego and he was not the center of his stories. A real gentleman.

  9. His shows were always fun to watch. Back in the 1980's as a new transplant to the Bay Area, it was great to see the secret hideaways this area had to offer.

    RIP.
