The Manti Te'o Drama and What Everybody is Talking About; Debra Saunders, TJ Simers and Glenn Dickey on Radio

Talk about the water cooler talk of the day.

This is it.

And as bizarre, as shocking, as creepy as this caper is, I'm a hundred percent certain there's more to come out. And most surely will.

We will discuss this with TJ Simers of the LA Times and Glenn Dickey of the SF Examiner on the radio show today.

At 1 PM, we lead off with Chronicle political columnist, Debra Saunders.

  1. Seriously, with all that's going on the nation and world today, from President Obama's proposals to curb gun violence and strengthen gun control laws to the hostage taking in Algeria and the war on the streets of Mali, some guy's imaginary girlfriend on Facebook is "what everybody is talking about?" Talk about sinking to new lows. I wasn't expecting Michael Krasny level of discourse, but shame on you, Rich. Imaginary or fake profiles on Facebook and the Internet are so prolific that they're hardly news.

    1. Ya got that right Boss. Rich's deal is "about" the media and not as a news source or current affairs source.

I'd go elsewhere if I'd rather hear about how the idiot president intends to stomp on my 2nd Amendment rights and how we can stifle his stupid agendas.

    2. 3:09 My sentiments exactly ... I don't mean to be so hard on Rich, as he's such an easy target. When he's on topic, sticking to blogging about rumors and breaking news concerning the Bay Area media, he's at the top of his game. But, as a radio talk show host ... eh ... not so much. As for the blog, I'm now in a holding pattern waiting to see if he continues to simply use it as the promotional mouthpiece for his radio show on the mighty KOMY from Watsonville. If so, then I'm tuning out.

  2. This is about as rapid a rise through the radio ranks as we have encountered in quite some time. Made all the more remarkable because it took place during the usually quiet Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday season.

  3. From Watsonville to your home and to the entire world, Rich Lieberman, host of "Lieberman Live," is indisputably a rising star in talk radio.

  4. 'Obama's gun plan: divide or conquer?' Saunders hit the proverbial nail right on the head.

  8. Hey Rich,

As an old journalist I have always avoided criticizing another reporter on a story. Because I never knew the circumstances surrounding how they covered something; time constraints, limited resources or angle-pressure from an editor.
But this story is just downright LAZY or SLOPPY reporting. They did little or nothing to try to find out more about this "girlfriend". The writers (I won't call them reporters or journalists because they didn't do even the basics of reporting or journalism) just took one side of a story. Even if they weren't suspicious they should have tried to talk to the "girlfriends" family or friends to get their perspective on the relationship. Do you agree?

    1. Manny, the world has changed. We're in a different environment. Do I like it? Hell no, but the genie is out of the bottle.

    2. Lazy and sloppy go hand in hand with phantom girlfriend stories. Portions of the media become more of a story then the actual story itself...in my eyes.

I say let the scrub reporters dwell on the tabloid subjects, quarantine them from topics that matter, and let quality journalists like Brooks and Friedman worry about conveying perspectives and facts for important topics.

  9. Who gives a shit? Maybe Fitzgerald aka Giggles over on the Knibber gives a damn, but outside of Notre Dame's lunatic fringe I could not care less about that news and I'm sure I'm not alone...

  10. Listening to Papa and whomever the other dude is on the Game and they are DANCING around what everyone is thinking- that PERHAPS Teo is hiding that he is gay. They glanced over it for about 30 seconds before a break. Look- IF the above is the case- it is a shame that one (and his peoples) would have to concoct such a story. Better to talk about the possibility (re: sports talk).

  11. Sorry. Papa and host are talking about "It" now after a caller brought it up.

  12. Its not creepy..its life. You can imagine what he must go through inventing a GF. He could pull a kitten out of a Pitt Bulls mouth and even a Christine would tell him "What are ya? a Fag?. Hate for gays is strong still.

    1. there is no such thing as a "pitt" bull. Attribute your homophobia to yourself, not me.

    2. "Hate for gays is strong still."

Any group that that crams their self importance down others throats of others(no pun intended)or makes a spectacle of themselves only exacerbates intolerance and undermines their credibility. The average person doesn't want to be annoyed with the details of butt hole pleasures and such and I can't imagine why one would make that the focus of their identity.

Take the CEO of Apple for example, Tim Cook is a normal guy who happens to be gay. He conducts himself like a professional, works hard, and has an impressive list of accomplishments. Good for him, live and let live. Would he have fewer opportunities if he were a flamer? Yes in his chosen industry and deservedly so...because he's not really focused on his work. He manages his life well.

Back to the ND player, is he dumb and gullible, or mixed up with identity issues? Either way, he's not managing his life wisely and an NFL career is at risk and will be tagged as such fairly. Maybe he's good at football and sucks at "life".

Hate towards any special interest group automatically attaches itself when the agenda becomes annoying.

Pretty dumb post 1:05. Typical passive aggressive PC bullshit if you ask me. Same shit, different day.

    3. you seem to have a lot of fixations about excretory process, things being shoved down your throat, and anal orifices. Have you sought therapy for that?

  14. Debra usually does and I've loved her for that quality and much more for thirty years. She's conservative in the best sense. She's also pretty swift with self defense, quite the fencing champion both verbally and literally.

    1. Amen, Christine! She brings much needed balance and perspective to the emotionally-charged gun violence and gun control debate.

  15. Good news! A friend in the know tells me it's likely that Santa Cruz-based independent broadcaster "MZ," whose AM radio station broadcasts "Lieberman Live," is likely to get FCC approval for several directional low-power FM translators, which will effectively extend the coverage area of KOMY and/or KSCO from Santa Cruz into the Bay Area starting with Los Gatos-Saratoga, Morgan Hill-Gilroy, and most of San Jose. Eventually, the plan is to blanket the Bay Area with a reliable signal as far north as Novato/San Rafael, Napa and Sonoma. A Sunol Ridge or Mt. Diablo repeater will bring "Lieberman Live" and other Zwerling programming into the Walnut Creek/Concord/Pleasanton area.

  17. You got a little testy today with TJ, or was it the other way around? He seemed to be rapping you on the knuckles for constantly bringing up a rumor that Manti Te'o could be gay and used the fake girlfriend to hide this. He rightly chastised you for making hay out of this.

  18. So, are the high-powered attorneys from corporate radio conglomerate CUME-Less still after you, threatening to sue you and destroy your blog and your reputation over you criticism of their business model? Haven't heard you mention them in a few months. Is that because you're no longer perceived as a threat, because you've hit the big-time in radio, or because it was all made-up to begin with? Come on, Richie, give us the low-down.

  19. Rich again, you should take note of this. There are a lot of your loyal readers, including myself, who really don't give a whit about who is on your radio show in beautiful downtown Santa Cruz or Watsonville, or wherever little hole in the wall town the show is emanating from. We just want out daily dish on the bay area media. Since you've become this 'radio star' lately, I understand your need to promote and pat yourself on the back, but you're blog has steadily gone downhill and I for one have been reading it a lot less. Suggestion: Less talk about your radio show and more of your insightful takes and sometimes hilarious rants on bay area media. You haven't had a good rant about our old friend Ronn Owens in awhile. Are you guys suddenly friend again?

  20. Rich: Go ahead and use your blog and every legitimate means at your disposal to promote your fledgling radio program. You'd be crazy not to, even at the risk of losing readers. As your KOMY radio show takes off, which it has already, the spotlight is moving to YOU, Rich, and the blogging... well, who cares. You do one great and do the other poorly, be mediocre at both, or make a choice. That's what it's coming to. So the blog was one phase of your life. Now you're entering the next!

  21. Enjoyed your show today. Sat still for the Glenn Dickey segment. You could do a whole show with him. So much history there. His insight into Bill Walsh and the 49ers during that time was really good. You only scratched the surface with him. Please get him back!
