Are you ready for some Football? Saturation Coverage of the Big Game and it's only Monday; Anchor change at KNTV? Monday Media Minutiae

Saturation coverage will be your buddy at the big game during the week. Are you ready? Of course because you've already seen and heard the hullabaloo a couple of weeks before the game and by the time the actually game has commenced, you'll have consumed so much more that you don't care. Most of you.

*Somebody who might know a bit or two about things in the TV biz tells me there's talk of "an anchor change" at KNTV, (NBC Bay Area). I have no clue other than perhaps a transaction involving Jessica Aguirre whose contract has expired and has not re-upped as of yet. And keep in mind that the big cheese that has some influence with NBC O and O's is Kevin Keeshan, (Keeshan used to be ND at KGO-TV before splitting for 30 Rock) and Keeshan is not a big fan of Aguirre, supposedly.

*Speaking of saturation coverage of the Superbowl, we bring to you, KPIX. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with the fact that the local CBS O and O station will air the game and make loads of money. It's perfect business and other stations would take just as much advantage just like PIX has, but here's the difference.

PIX has been overly-milking the game since the very second the 49ers won the NFC Championship game and incorporating it into their news domain in virtually all 5 and 6 PM newscasts. There's no point in trying to justify what's real "news" and what isn't, but PIX has gone to the extreme even by their byzantine news standards. It's one thing to do a lot of booster club, post-game tailgate, we're goin' to New Orleans fan story stuff every now and then but when you LEAD in mid week with one of your lead anchors doing a 49ers fan fluffo piece, you should be ashamed. Just watch today at 5 and check the lead story. It'll be repeated every day until Sunday.

*Just because a certain media blogger has been doing a radio show with a lot of media guests doesn't mean that the blogger will suddenly go soft on his critiques. In fact, much of the local anchors who have been on the show have also been on the receiving end of various rips and parting shots. You know you're OK when you stay consistent with your analysis and the majority of your guest requests not only want to do the show, but make it a point of actually wanting to go on again.

*Harvey Araton, award-winning columnist, author, from the NY Times will be one of my highlight guests on the radio show today from 1-3 PM on KSCO-KOMY.

  1. Well,Roberts really did hassle a poor homeless guy with a little dog on a red tether...then BLAMED HIM for being whats wrong with the Haight.
I mean, the guy did ask Roberts not to film his dog. Roberts ignored him, stood 5' away and filmed the dog.
I can tell you the dog wasn't what Stanley Roberts had an interest in. It wasn't the motive.

    1. 11:14, you're not allowed to write about Stanley Roberts, or Robert Stanley, or anybody else unless it's germain to Rich's topic. You get only one warning!

  2. The Superbowl is a great local story for the first time in what, 18 years?
I've watched more KPIX local news recently because of their coverage. I can't be there in New Orleans so the reports of local fans making the trek, the sights and sounds of New Orleans, the local lads playing in the big game--love it.
Unfortunately I'm reminded of why I don't watch that station anymore (Robert Gonzalez), but I can usually skip through her via the DVR.
It is a feel good story (hopefully after this Sunday too), rather watch coverage of this than the Oscar Grant movie or the latest Oakland crimes.

  3. As usual and predictable, Stan veers the comment section off course. This post is about Super Bowl coverage and KPIX. Please go away and take your tiny brain somewhere else.

    1. Really? My post was about something you could have figured-should have- out, if you had a brain. Think hard and you might get a clue. No,I won't spell it out for you..just let the smart people laugh at you.

    2. Stan, please just go away or start a blog of your own. Enough!

    3. 327..That's the best you got?. Republicans are cowards. They have no argument so they go straight to ban that opinion.
I never ask they ban you Reggie. Because unless your posting is tagged to mine,I don't care what you think.

Oh,yeah- My post was right on topic. And you never got it.

    4. Amen @3:27, if Stan as fascinating as he fancies himself, he should just start his own blog.

    5. How come Stan is always hurling insults instead of answering that simple question about starting his own blog?

    6. Stan, Read The Room.

Start your own blog. Then you can “post” your thoughts. This is a comments section of a blog. (“Remember when I, Stan, said in September that the Giants should start Lincecum. Raddy read my “post” and then said that same thing on the air. See, Raddy does read my posts. I, Stan, control the content of the radio waves”).

If you could start a blog, your thoughts would be accountable and archived. Currently you are a crazy man commenting incoherent thoughts on Rich’s and BASG’s sites.

    7. Yeah- read the room Rich,Lowell and Steve post my comments as fast as I write them. I would think you guys would get the hint.

    8. @12:16 - You are 100% correct in telling Stan that "currently [he is] a crazy man commenting incoherent thoughts on Rich’s and BASG’s sites"

Wouldn't he rather be a crazy man posting to his own site!

  4. Thank you, Rich, for saying it!

I am so sick of those 49er 'news' items taking up at least one third of the broadcast. Sick to the point that I'm looking for a replacement, maybe Channels 2, 7 or 4; maybe even PBS.

And what's with that goofy-ass weather wagon? They were justifiably proud of their hi-def doppler, high atop Mount Vaca. So why this new gimmick? Isn't weather forecasting done best from viewing what's happening in the sky?

But viewing it from Interstate 80? Not so much.

KPIX has become a living caricature of a slow news day.

    1. Ditto, ditto, ditto....I am so tired of the overwhelming saturation of "hype" on KPIX that I am getting my new from the Sacramento Media Outlets. I'm lucky that I live in an area were I can get the Bay Area Media Outlets, as well as Sacramento.

Also Rich can you find out exactly what is up with our local Bay Area Media Outlets. They "all" act like they operating from the County of Santa Clara, when we all know that KGO, KPIX, and KTVU are all located in the SF/Oakland Bay Area! What is up with that??? In fact the other day I heard KPIX announce in their promo for the news, "Covering Santa Clara, SF, & Oakland!" I said "what!"

Why is there this sudden push in our local Media for the Santa Clara to be the focal point of the Bay Area???? Don't get me wrong I used live in Santa Clara, and I remember a time when they never use to mention Santa Clara!

  5. PIX went to Michelle Griego like 6 times between 5 and 6 AM, what the hell for?

3, maybe 4 stories to cover: 1) The score (still 0 to 0), 2) the brother coaches, 3) superman Kaepernick, and maybe 4) Lewis's last stand. That can be covered starting on Sunday at noon.

BTW, Julie Watts did some prime time anchoring last week, prrr. I was in a mesmerized state and she could have been reading the side of a cereal box for all I know.

  6. Talk about hypocrisy!

Rich saturates this blog with news about his radio program. BUT when KPIX exploits their connection with the NINERS and plugs their upcoming Superbowl, Rich is all indignant.

It's the most watched event on TV, a local team is in it, and they'll be broadcasting it. This is their business. Why shouldn't they promote it?

    1. Yeah, god forbid I'm plugging my own radio gig on my OWN blog...and your comparing me to KPIX? Interesting, I'm both humbled and pissed. I think I'll have some coffee, Mr "Fair and Balanced."

    2. Tony thinks that there's value in milking a "home field advantage", especially with an upstart radio program. The pix trifecta ~ pix/home team/cbs broadcast of the game is not only a great opportunity, but the head honcho's would want answers from the PD if it wasn't milked or a competing channel had more coverage.

    3. If he was honest,he would call himself unfair and unbalanced.

    4. Rich, I totally understand plugging your own gig on your own blog BUT fail to see the distinction between that and KPIX plugging the Superbowl which they are lucky enough to broadcast in a year the the local team will be playing.

KPIX wants people to watch the game and accompanying KPIX programming, you want listeners to tune in to your radio show. What's the difference?

  8. If there is anything as wearying as the local news outlets covering a story that has yet to happen, it's you, the local media blogger incessantly sucking his own dick. Good lord, get a date will you?

  9. I've lived in a lot of places, and been lucky enough to experience Superbowls in other cities. The way the 49ers (and other teams) are treated by the local media is embarrassing. The fact that KNBR is re-airing previous week's games throughout the weekend is some of the worst programming I've ever heard. Are they BROKE?!? Can they not put SOMEONE ON? A couple of weeks ago they aired the SF Giants Game 4 when the 49ers had off. Are you GNIKCUF kidding me? And then to hear the NEWS STATIONS cover this thing like it's the Millennium wrapped up inside a Heavyweight Prize Fight being shown at half time of the World Cup Final featuring USA vs Iraq is goddamn embarrassing.

It's such poor programming I can't even listen to the radio anymore.

    1. Yep...Our local Media Outlets are brown nosers, and butt kissers when it comes to the 49ers & other professional sports team in the Bay Area!

  11. I watched the 5pm PIX news based on Rich's post. At 5:20 I turned to KGO because EVERY newspiece was Super Bowl related and they were just about to start another one. There IS more going on than SB fluff. If this saturation does continue, KGO (hell, even KRON) is going to get my time. Enough already.

  12. I am very disappointed with the KPIX morning news since they started broadcasting Michelle Griego from New Orleans. I can tolerate a bit of lighter human interest stuff but they are overkill at the expense of more important news in the bay area (and she comes across as very lightweight). After putting up with this for 3 straight days, I began to channel surf to find some better news and started watching KTVU which was something more comfortable to me. I wrote Bruno Cohen to let him know the KPIX fluff on the Superbowl just drove another viewer to KTVU.

  13. I like the fact that NBC advertises that they have 2 dozen reporters for Super Bowl week yet usually have to depend on outside sources to do reporting on serious stories. Way to use those resources guys!
