KGO a year later; Tattoo You SF Quarterback; Saturday Night Radio Rundown

*KGO to KGOne a year later: Dec 1, 2012. Tattered ratings, an all-news format that has never gravitated toward more listeners and a destruction of a once-legendary brand. Yeah, congrats all around. And we haven't even mentioned the weekend.

Righto, 'yous right: Let's move on.

*49ers QB, Colin Kaepernick, was the subject of an article by an AOL Fanhouse writer who criticized the player over the abundance of tattoos on his upper torso. A lot to talk about here and we will do so tonight on the radio show. (You might be surprised over my take.)

*Speaking of radio: the guest list tonight:

8: 8: 20: Patrick Warburton
9-10: CBS Washington Correspondent: Dan Raviv
10-11 PM: Ed Robertson from TV Confidential

All times: PT

    1. 8:55...it's nice to be enthusiastic, but c'mon "the world"???...this is KOMY you are speaking of.

    2. To say Rich can be heard around the world as he broadcasts live from KOMY 1340 AM is no exaggeration or stretch of the imagination. Granted, KOMY's night-time signal may not reach much beyond Santa Cruz, Aptos, Watsonville, and vicinity where it can heard by tens of thousands of potential listeners. Bear in mind, however, that KOMY's programming, including LIEBERMAN LIVE, is live streamed over the internet and subsequently available 24-7 by podcast all over the world.

  2. Good luck with the new venture Richie. I know that this is what you want to be doing. I am sure with your hustling efforts and your personality that it will be fun and you'll have a good time!

  3. And not surprisingly, it's been a year since I ever had 810 on my radio dial.

Those people at Cumulus sure know how to ruin radio stations. I hope they go Chapter 7.

    1. ll:59...well hope you enjoy your celebration, listening to Karel, who, by the way, is extremely liberal. KGO is awful, but not right wing yet. What an obnoxious post!

    2. @11:59

Cumulus could buy up every radio station in our area and run audio recordings of Der Fueher's countless speeches from the Thirties and Forties on every single one of them, 24/7/365; it might even appeal to guys like you.

But in the process, you'll never be able to convert the intelligent and well educated liberal voices of the Bay Area into troglodytic conservatives. The only ones who'll be glued to the radio, delighting in Adolf's words will be the same morons who already faun over misogynistic, racist, hate-mongers like Crotch Limburger.

Guys like you remind me of one of my favorite quotes: Not all conservatives are stupid; but, most stupid people are conservative. You fall into the latter category.

    3. I don't get what you are so happy about, or perhaps gleeful is a better word. First of all KGO kept some of their more liberal hosts like Pat Thurston and Karel. Maureen Langdon is liberal, she just happens to be a very bad talk show host. Christine Kraft is liberal, and a good talk show host. They let 2 of their best host go, Gene Burns and John Rothman, Gene was hardly a liberal, more a liberatarian, John was liberal on most issues, except Israel, however he is not as liberal as Karel. I don't get why you are happy that many liberal voices are gone. If you don't like liberal talk show host, I assume you are and adult with 2 hands, turning the dial or off switch is a very simple procedure. If you like conservative talk radio you have many choices, Glenn Beck, Rush, Sean, Mark Levin etc. etc. Are you so hateful that you don't want liberals to be informed, entertained and stimulated by the few good liberal hosts that are available, even before KGO changed format, the choice for liberal or just middle of the road talk was limited. How pathetic.

  5. Today is KGO Radio's Yahrzheit.
They are marking it by giving us Karel followed by Crime Time.

  7. I remember when I heard the news - it was a Thursday afternoon right? I remember that the Rothman show seemed to be out of sync, but I didn't mind. Then I read about it on Friday and listened to Rothman's show on Friday (another repeat) trying to remember and savor the station I'd listened to for 30 plus years.
It's funny, because the first time I remember listening to KGO (by my own choice, not my parents) was on a Friday night with Ronn Owens and "Honest Chuck." I was a kid, but I'd been a loyal listener ever since.
So listening to that Rothman program was like eating the last cheeseburger you'll ever eat or drinking the last cup of coffee....
I've mentioned it before here, but a decade or so ago I was driving down from Oregon and Bernie Ward was reminiscing about the station, former hosts, other big moments in the station's history underlining the point that KGO was a rarity and becoming more rare as consolidation took hold. Most non-news stations have almost no news operations, many stations have few if any local live on-air broadcasters.
I still hope Cumulus comes to its senses and returns to a live/local talk format. I realize KGO is never going to be the same, but I have to think the Bay Area would support a return to general talk. I figure Cumulus could even hire a good enough local host who would play on other Cumulus stations that are tanking.

  8. KGO Talk Radio is dead....get over it...get a internet radio you can listen to 1,000's of talk stations... Ronn Owens will be gone by Jan. 2013......

  9. Cummulus should have learned its lesson by now. They should beg the former hosts to come back, whatever that takes. That monumentally bad decision last year destroyed KGO. I know of no one (and everyone I knew was listening then) who continued to listen after The Purge. What will it take for them to realize what a mistake they made?!?!?
