Congrats, SF Giants and fans. Your team has captured the national sports spotlight as the "Comeback Kids." Two World Series in a couple of years. Impressive.
That's the good news, (in lieu of a series win over the Detroit Tigers).
The bad news: The Giants virtual control of the local media and press corps will only be tightened. That's not something that portends well.
A few media figures have noticed.
From a strictly fan standpoint, this means nothing. The booster club is delirious and the avatars on social media are beaming with orange and black logos. The Chamber of Commerce can't wait for the first Fox blimp shot. Willie Brown has already secured his VIP seats. Ed Lee and Gavin Newsom will be holding court at Balboa.
Larry Baer, Giants President, has already begun counting the cash and I'm sure has a "dynamic pricing" plan in store for 2013. La, la, la...and KTVU, the local Fox aff, is so happy they're seriously considering dynamic coverage. Just try this time not sending Debra Villalon to away games in Detroit.
*The KSFO Morning Show continues to bring forth unintended chuckles, this time the dynamic duo of Melanie Morgan and Brian SussMAN! proclaiming Mitt Romney the winner in Monday's third and last presidential debate. Even the tools on Fox News, (minus Chris Wallace), proclaimed President Obama the clear winner, which he cleary was, Mitt stratagy or not, (of holding serve.)
Some background: Only the most ludicrous goofs said Obama won the first debate. He didn't. He was catatonic, tired and looked as if he was bored. We all said that, the pundits on MSNBC, HuffPost, me included.
It's called a reality check. It also deals with credibility, remember that word? So it would figure that when Romney is nailed like he was last night, (and ever so slightly in the second debate), the legitimate right-wing press would call it Obama's night and such was the case on Monday. And they did.
All but little old KSFO, surprise.
The SussMAN; he of the "Libs"; the mad scientist that refutes all aspects of some legitimate global warming, said Romney was the clear winner. "He , (Obama), looked angry.", offered Suss, who never met a caucasian truck driver in Martinez he didn't like.
Melanie Morgan, who plays to the microphone and clearly has a twinkle in her eye, (translation: Mel is performing some of the time and sort of gets it), even suggested it wasn't Obama's night. Uh, the nation, even Roger Ailes begs to differ.

Get over it, grouchy. People are excited about the World Series, and this is a big deal. Too bad you have such sour grapes you can't see that. Keep shaking your fist at the TV.
ReplyDeleteOh Rich, talk about glass half full. However, as always, your mood will swing back. I worry about you because of your strong attraction to negativity. You hang on like a pit bull to stuff like hating Ronn Owens, other media people, and admiring the biggest downer ever, M. Savage. Occasionally, the cheerful you comes. Personally your posts are bests when you feel good about life. Just my opinion.
DeleteThe Giants will win the World Series in 4 games.
DeleteYou can take that to the bank!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Giants lead 4-0.
DeleteYou can put this one in the win column!
Contrarian Rich gets annoyed when the masses are happy.
ReplyDeletePlease provide some credible evidence of "Giants virtual control of the local media and press corps" aside from a tweet from that eminent scholar Damon Bruce.
Need proof? read Henry Schluman today.
DeleteSorry, Rich
ReplyDeleteObama did not win and tied at best. He is on the defensive for his poor economic results and soft handling of foreign affairs. His cute scripted phrases and petulance in his demeanor are not the mark of a great president. Romney was measured, calm and credible and looks like a statesman while Obama thinks he's still passing out leaflets on a Chicago street corner. Rich, you have to quit gauging the results based on the liberal alphabet media types.
Maybe you thought Romney won but the polls all agree that Obama won:
DeleteCBS News, Obama +30, CNN, Obama +8, Google Consumer, Obama +16.
Before you start with your "mainstream liberal bias" blather, allow me to point out that they were conducted by legitimate polling organizations that all had Romney winning the first debate substantially.
Obama won...and since the debate was on Foreign Policy, and Romney tried to pivot to the economy...Obama wins just by sticking with the subject of the debate...though Mitt tried to make economic points...not all bad, but shows he lacks foreign policy expertise...an area as Governor nor as a "businessman" skills translate.
DeleteI wish Obama would drive a Mack truck through the myth of Mitt's business credentials. Mitt did NOT create jobs, he created WEALTH for stockholders...absolutely nothing wrong with that. BUT doing what he did and what Bain and private equity groups do is not job creation...it is destructive capitalism. Again that is not all bad, but it is NOT a record of creating jobs and growing an economy.
Also, experts have said that 12 millions jobs will be created over the next 4 years regardless of who occupies the White House...so Mitt touting that he will "create" that amount of jobs is like saying "it will rain again sometime in the Bay Area"
Mitt lost and made one major "Palinesque" gaff when he said Syria is Iran's route to the sea...obviously Mitt like many Republicans don't know geography...which explains one reason why Bush went into Iraq instead of Afghanistan.
Fox tries so hard...too hard to blame other media to compensate for its own ideological bent and weak journalistic credentials. The first sign of a hack is someone who says everyone else is a hack...that defines Fox News.
"Syria is Iran's route to the sea", I heard this and understood it to mean that since they are allies, Iran would be able to skirt the borders and access the sea via Syria.......maybe you shouldn't be so quick to label an entire party as geographically challenged, after all, you're so enlightened and superior being part of the bay area.
DeleteEnlightened enough to understand directly in what someone says...and not "interpret" what they say or what they mean.
DeleteI have lived all over the US...the deep south, the mid-west, east coast, and rocky mountain west....and yes now call the Bay Area home.
If knowing geography makes me "superior"..then I am over most all the candidates put forth for President by the GOP the last 12 years.
But what do you expect from a group and electorate that somehow think "fact avoidance", intelligence, aspirations for college are in the words of one candidate Rick Santorum "snobbish" and another whose Foreign Policy credentials are "seeing" Russia from Alaska?
Mitt Romney would maybe be a decent candidate/leader, but he has to pander to the idiots of the Right so much, he lost credibility with anyone who can think, Google, and grasps geography, and Econ 101.
Well, go ahead and re-elect Obama and reap what you sow. By the way, good luck getting anything constructive done when you can't even get past 3rd grade name calling and party labeling. And for crying out loud, enough with the Palin references. She ran for VP once..........war on women???
DeleteSome locals tip their hands as to what party they support.ch7's Laura Anthony thinks Berkeley is Communist USA,Tory Campbell on ch.2 wants the whole world to be Danville. And sports blob Gary Radnich hates anything to the left of 'Predator'. Or Asian.
ReplyDeleteLook, the power of the local teams over weak willed sports writers is huge. When the 49ers signed Parrish Cox,Ann Killion made a point of saying "We dont know all the facts of that (rape) trial" We dont? DNA evidence looked strong to me.
Falling back on the toy dept. excuse I'm sure works.
I watched the debate pretty closely, and while it's hard to say someone "won", it did seem to me Obama is more "presidential." I guess that's only natural considering he is the president, but that's the case.
ReplyDeleteRomney has no record to speak of (he literally doesn't speak about his record), so he's left to point out failures of his opponent. That's a good strategy at first, but it starts fading the further along we go. Saying what you will do while not promoting what you have already done is disingenuous. So while it may seem like Obama is on the "defensive", he is in fact defending his record, like it, or not.
One of the strange dynamics of the race has been Obama's reluctance to bring up how Wall St is actually doing better (stocks) since he came into office. Only Carter had a net loss during his time in office. Since Wall St is somewhat of a bad word I think Obama is reluctant to mention it. Granted, it's doing better in the face of the precipitous drop Bush created, but nevertheless, that is in fact the case with stocks.
In the end it is much easier to attack without having to defend than it is to defend and attack. For whatever reason Romney has been given a pass on his record, and his lack of conviction on nearly everything. Whether that holds up as a strategy we'll know in a couple of weeks. I'm betting it isn't going to work. Yet it's too close to call right now.
I would have to agree with Rich that Obama is winning because he's operating on two fronts, and what detractors refer to as negative could be perceived as forceful and aggressive by supporters. Since Obama is aiming for my vote, I think he's doing quite well.
Granted, the Republican party I once supported is a shadow of itself, so these days its hard for me to really consider any of their candidates. My memory stretches back enough to the recent primaries, wherein Romney had already lost my vote. I viewed him then as a the candidate, and how he acted during those "debates" said enough.
Tie goes to the incumbent in all boxing, baseball, and in debates as well. Challengers has to WIN. Rommey is 1-2.
And what exactly is Obama's record? He seemed presidential? What I saw was a man who clearly knows the polls are going south.I just hope the area will be able to handle it when he loses in 2 weeks.
DeleteToday's post is very telling. There are many people who've been brainwashed by the Giants (just look at the comments here). There is huge spin control here by the Giants ... and it has existed for a long time.
ReplyDeleteThe stories in the local media are so softball it isn't funny. Lots of kissy assie going around. Funny thing: the people who read/listen/view this dribble are too dumb to notice and are so queer about the Giants that they just don't care.
Rarely a negative call about the Giants goes on the Sports Bleeder. The Chronicle needs the Giants cooperation so they can sell newspapers -- thus nary a negative story. Same with the other newspapers.
This has nothing to do with being a grouch or a grinch. It's the facts. Some of the people who read the posts aren't in the business. They don't get it. While sports is the toy department, it is a livelihood for those in the game and those who cover it. Doing it may be fun, but bills have to be paid and lives need to be led.
wow, talk about hyperbole - "brainwashed"? now who's taking this "toy department" too seriously? if you"re not interested, ignore it and move on to admittedly more important issues of the day... thanks for the smile and laugh - maybe something you should try sometimes ;)
Delete@12:13 Are you nuts?
DeleteThe team just won the pennant and going to the World Series and you're complaining about the lack of negative stories?
Shouldn't you be outside yelling at the kids playing on your lawn?
Brian ”the tiger” Sussman is not the only right wing lunatic who thought Romney won. You should've heard John Batchelor on ksfo right after the debate. He was out of control giddy, he and Sussman probably drink the same stuff before a show. This is the main reason Sussman will never have any reach beyond Pleasanton. He is too predictable and boring. As much as many hate Savage at least he can be credited with criticizing Romney throughout the campaign. That is why ”Libs” like myself tune in only to Savage out of all right wing hosts. He takes good shots at the Repubs very often.
ReplyDeleteI listened to Savage in his second hour on my way home from work, only lasted a few minutes. Yes, he critized Romney and it is mildly entertaining, but then he goes off on Obama being a socialist, communist or too friendly with muslims, and perhaps would welcome muslims control of the US, or something to that effect. Just way out there, and he (Savage) is too intelligent and have traveled too much in the world, to know that Obama is neither a socialist or communist.
DeleteSussman no, he just does not have the brains to know different, but Savage does. Agree with you and others Sussman is the worst, just can't listen to him, which means I don't listen to Melanie either.
Batchelor is at it again today. He is spiking the football as if Romney completely destroyed Obama in the debate. His melodramatic music seems louder than usual. Apparently Batchelor will follow Savage from 9 to midnight? Btw Rich, you may be interested in this post from Cabinet Man on FB this evening, it explains why he takes no callers. It does not explain why he puts Rhoda on the air on Fridays! Here it is: ” It's an ongoing debate in talkradio. Since the ratings system changed we've all noticed the ratings for talk station that did calls plummeted. There's a lot of debate about the reasons, but the main problem seems to be that to set up calls on a topic you need to stay with that topic for awhile and the new system rewards stations where people tune in a lot rather than stay with one station for an hour [in radio terms cume vs. TSL, or time spent listening]. I like calls and also miss them, but our ratings have been going up and up. It drove Mickey Luckoff, my friend and boss at KGO, that ratings systems end up driving programming, but if we want to keep the lights on, it does. However, we are a young radio station, and we talk about this stuff every day, so nothing is written in stone. Right now, we're just trying to grow it so we can be more and more local and bigger and better.”
DeleteObama came across as weak, feeble and ineffective.
DeleteNeed we say anymore?
So isn't Cabinet Man saying, in other words, that the talk radio format doesn't cut it any more, which would seem to vindicate the decision by managemeent to end it at his previous employer 100 mhz. down the AM dial ... or I am missing something here? If Cabinet Man takes calls, the old KGO format, ratings go down. His long monologues, broken by a few interviews, are increasing audience share and ratings? I've moved on to KQED-FM, but OK. Can't say I miss Gil and Rhoda (Mr. Sparky).
DeleteHey Rich, you know dynamic pricing works both ways - Dodger game on a Sunday afternoon is really going to cost you, but a San Diego game on a weekday night can really be a bargain - was able to take my entire family to more than a few games this season without breaking the bank.....
ReplyDeleteMr. 10.46 had it Spot On, (PRESIDENT)Romney won the debate, as he showed self control and resisted taking the Libya Bait repeatedly offered to him by Schieffer and your 'president'. They were TOO EAGER to talk about it. Everyone could see that those two were in CAHOOTS, (i.e. Lady Candy Crow)had some new silly diversion planned, no doubt. (Lybian Bird Binders?)
ReplyDeleteOff Topic, I am one of those people who DOES NOT CARE ABOUT SPORTS NEWS. I like KSFO at times, but this year KSFO IS SPENDING WAY TOO MUCH MORNING AIR TIME RAVING AND FROTHING AND SHRIEKING ABOUT BALL GAMES!!!!! Nowadays it is not unusual for ksfo to spend a whole 15 minute segment replaying ball game spots, with the blustery announcer and the delirous cheers. I understand this is a big money sponsor, but admiration is giving way to freakin worship! BORING!! I don't know why, but sports broadcasts have ALWAYS BORED ME. I tried to like them as a kid, share time with my Dad, but after a few minutes, I'm ready to move on. Besides....I listen to talk radio for POLITICS or SOCIOLOGY or CRIMINOLOGY, even PARAPSYCHOLOGY as with the high priests of Coast to Coast. I know... how bout filling the time up with jokes, riddles or kooky short stories, or animal stories, Nature facts (NOT, NOT GLOBAL WARMING!!!, If ksfo gets stuck on Global Warming, I will RUN AWAY to A and G at 910AM. There are many choices other than sports when we need a quick break from Washington's Whispers.
12:41 Maybe you could try more capital letters.
DeleteJust not right that the Giants employ a drug cheat for half the season, build up a lead in the division, use said cheater to win All-Star game and gain home field advantage in the World Series. Baseball gods should intervene as they did when Bonds was the known Giant cheater.
ReplyDelete-SF was in 2nd place when Cabrera was suspended and went 30-14 (.682)after the suspension. They were 64-54 (.542) prior.
Delete-The NL won the All-Star game 8-0, Cabrera didn't account for all 8 runs. The AL didn't score, period.
Yeah? Well, like Bonds, he may be a cheater but he was OUR cheater!
Delete2:48, maybe you would've been in fourth place, and don't forget who was the All-Star game MVP. 3:23, you sound like a brilliant, mature individual and prototypical Giant fan.
DeleteThe Giants press corps, (Hank Schluman) is in full court press defending the Melky Cabrerra drug scandal.
DeleteHappiness is having the local sports writers in your back pocket.
@12:14 - What exactly does "defending the Melky Cabrerra drug scandal" mean?
DeleteWhat is it that you would prefer local sports writers to write about the Melky Cabrerra drug scandal?
Brian Sussman is the absolute worst on-air personality in Bay Area media. There is no one who comes close to Sussman's hateful cackle and insipid rhetoric. He is a true scumbag, and 100% awful.
ReplyDeleteOne can only imagine how outraged grouchy old Rich would be if the Giants actually win the World Series and locals celebrate.
ReplyDeleteRich. Do I need to spank you? Go Giants!!
ReplyDeleteI do not get it, how can anyone in the United States vote for the Socialist leaning Obama. Our way of life is at stake here, wake up and take our country back for good. Our debt with Obama is $16 Trillion and growing. He wants to get us in so much debt that he can turn us into a third world country. That is not what this country is all about.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like you've been listening to Rush for far too long. You have all the idiotic talking points down pat. At least you stopped asking for the birth certificate.
Delete8:18...you are totally delusional.
DeleteMaybe all the people who are going to re-elect Obama in 2 weeks just don't agree with your moronic, wing nut talking point about the "Socialist leaning Obama", a scare tactic popularized by people who know better to try an influence uneducated saps like yourself.
DeleteWhy do I get the feeling that Rich was that fat kid with glasses that neither team wanted on their team?
ReplyDeleteBaseball games should not have rain delays...the seniors tour LPGA should have exclusive rights to it.
ReplyDeleteIf you're ever wondering why Democrats find themselves voting for Obama over Romney, maybe it has nothing to do with the 2 candidates, but everything to do with the parties themselves?
ReplyDeleteI'm not seeing these types of stories on the other side:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-fix/wp/2012/10/24/mourdock-god-intended-for-babies-to-result-from-rape/
http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2012/10/19/tea-party-illinois-rep-joe-walsh-one-ups-akin-s-legitimate-rape.html
http://www2.staffordcountysun.com/news/2012/oct/24/gop-contract-hire-va-charged-voter-fraud-ar-2308395/
I could go on all day.
While I think the Democrats have their problems, it's not this type of stuff.
This series will not even be close.
ReplyDeleteThe Giants are the superior team.
Nobody, but nobody can touch them now.
Get over it Rich. This series is in the win column for the Orange and Black.
The Neo-cons and the right wingers who were elected to Congress and the Senate these last 12 years are the ones you should be blaming for some of the problems in this nation. The House is 'broken' because the Repubs are refusing to budge on anything. 'Reaching across the aisle to work with the other party,' is a phrase that some of these folks have never learned and will never even attempt to try and do.
ReplyDeleteWhen I hear one of the right wing Republican Congressmen from the south quoted recently, (he was making a speech to a religious group, but there was media in attendance as this was a public event), as saying that "the big bang theory and evolutionary theories are messages from hell!" many Americans such as myself say:
"No wonder this country is going to the dogs!" Idiots who don't pay attention are electing dangerous idealogues from the right who might very well lead this country into more catastrophic times.
The series won't be close?!?!
ReplyDeleteCy Young, Tripe Crown Winner, Homerun Derby champ, all in tougher league.
I'm guessing it might be close...
"Our way of life is at stake here, wake up and take our country back for good."
ReplyDeleteTake your country back from what? Stop parroting stupid right-wing talking points and learn to think for yourself. And while you're at it, learn what "socialism" really is.
I come from a socialistic country (Denmark) although it is not 100% socialistic, people own houses, even 2nd homes, businesses, many companies are not government owned. Although I like the US and the system here, I see certain advantages to living in Denmark (or almost any other European country). Such as, since we have government healthcare, and private insurance companies as well, no one feel forced to stay in a job they don't like, because they are not dependent on the work place to provide health coverage. Althought a severe illness can be devastating economically, usually people don't end up going broke or being forced from their house because of an illness. In general people have more peace of mind even though they might not make a lot of money, whereas in the States I find people are almost always worry about money, how to make it, save it, protect it, make it multiply. Because there is more of a safety net, than in the US, people don't feel it necessary to just accumulate money. Thus they seem to enjoy it more, they travel, they spend more time with their families etc.
ReplyDeleteThere is so much ignorance in this country about socialsm, no system it perfect, each has plusses and minuses. Denmark do have a fairly high tax rate, but most people don't mind, they would rather pay a little more, than seeing fellow danes on the street homeless. Perhaps because we are a country of just 5 million people, there is more of a community feeling, however because of that, and probably also because it is a very small country I think most people are less lonely, than most americans.
