BREAKING: Greg Kihn parts ways at KFOX-FM; Bay Area Radio/Singer Out at San Jose Rocker; UPDATE

Greg Kihn

Greg Kihn, the highly-rated Classic Rock Radio morning man in the South Bay Area and KFOX FM have parted ways.

No details on the move, but we are making calls and will try to have info soon.

Kihn, of course, is well known for his top hits in the 80's with “Breakup Song” and “Jeopardy”, and worldwide notoriety and regular airplay on MTV.

He'd been at KFOX since 1994 and developed a strong following with listeners in his new morning gig in the radio biz.

We're awaiting word from insiders as to what's behind this move.

Here's the official line from Kihn's website.

  1. His PR release said: "Mr. Kihn just celebrated his 16th Anniversary with KFOX FM, which is believed to be the longest reigning radio industry tenure for a morning man with a single station west of the Mississippi."

Have they ever heard of Dr. Don Rose, or Don Bleu, or Jim Dunbar, or Kim Vestal? And that's just Bay Area names that jumped to mind in 30 seconds of brainstorming. Nothing against Greg, but that statement's an overreach. Maybe the PR flacks should qualify their claim a bit.

  2. He was the only reason I put KFOX on. I never could figure how he could talk with a baritone on radio and sing like a eunich!

  3. 2:43 - Maybe the press release referred to current tenure with the same station? Bleu has moved stations, twice I believe. The others are no longer on radio.

Loved Kihn. Hope he turns up elsewhere. Or maybe he's writing books full-time. Via con dios, Greg.

    1. Get your Spanish straight. It is: Vaya Con Dios.
      Translation is: Go with Hashem

    2. Also, I believe Kim Vestal is still doing mornings on KKIQ.

  5. Hello, KFOG, are you listening? Or, maybe even The Bone? Though, he might actually demand a salary. Too bad and right on the eve of his induction into the Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame. Wondering what transpired here.

  6. Word is that Annalisa has left KFOG and will be doing wake ups at KFOX

  8. Khin's okay when he sticks to the music and the old days touring, but his right-winger rants and ant-gay stuff over the years kind of turned me off and tuned me out. Kind of like Dr. Bill. Stick the science stuff and cool it on the right-wing hate.

    1. ^This.

He actually said disparaging things about John Mellencamp just for being a Democrat and not kissing Bush's ass.

      What a war mongering dickhead.

      Good riddance.

    2. huh,I wasn't a regular listener..glad I missed that. I guess he went to the hate well to often lately?

    3. Wow, it always surpises me that musicians bend to the right or have a limited tolerance for diversity. By their very nature, they're on the fringe and would not benefit from that kind of policy or myopic viewpoint. Though, I've only heard bits of his show and never heard him get political. Probably not a great match for KFOG unless he edits himself severly.

    4. Are you saying Kihn got canned for NOT being a total pussy? You guys need to increase your red meat consumption.

    5. Dr. Bill is a Harry Reid lover.

    6. Yeah, I was surprised when I heard his snide insinuations about Mellencamp.

Something along the lines of "Hey, despite his left wing politics, I'm still gonna play his songs..."

      Fuck you Greg.

I don't care what your political viewpoints are but don't mock opposing ones.

      What an intolerant dick.

  9. You are the hate mongers... you hate anyone who has a differing opinion from your own. Instead of engaging in reasonable political discourse, you resort to name calling and black-balling because you have no argument to back up your views. You confuse your emotions with reason. You assume that because a lot of people in the Bay Area share your same political feelings, you are right and anyone with a differing opinion is not only wrong, but deserves to be ostracized and deprived of a livelihood. That sort of collective mentality is reminiscent of Nazi Germany or Stalinist Russia.

rancour, jealousy & hate just pours out of some of these posts.

    2. That's the argument the Nazi's put on the Jews who wanted to stifle the Nazi's messages of a pure Germany.
Ya know, its not wrong to oppose a message of "FIRE!"..in a crowded theater. YOU GET MY DRIFT?

    4. Dave what is with all the anger?
As soon as someone points out your hypocritical stance, you (as a typical liberal) start with name calling instead of coming back with an intellegent answer or retort.
Another angry, seething with bitterness, liberal.

  10. I prefer Wierd Al Yankovic's parody "I lost on Jeopardy" over Kihn's original.

Oh you sensitive little sniveling leftists! Where does it say all rockers are pussies like Jackson Browne? I now have more respect for Kihn for expressing his opinions and not bathing in the stink that is the politically correct mindset of SF Media.

  14. Rich, are you asleep? KFOG's birthday party show just announced Annalisa is leaving the station. I know this means nothing to you personally but she is about the last vestige of KFOG's so called GOLDEN ERA. They of course said nothing about where she was going but this perhaps gives credence to the above speculation on KFOX. Also mentioned is that Renee moves to Annalisa's old shift and takes over 10@10.

    1. With Renee going to mid-days does this mean the PD will do afternoon drive solo? That really is the end of KFOG.

  15. Its funny to read of so many 80's rockers turn to the right as they age to their 50's and 60's. Greg isnt the only one. It must be Reagan Rock era elements.

  16. I will miss Gregs show on KUFX. He had many interesting stories to tell and had some good interviews with various musicians. Yeah, his political leaning was not quite what mine is but I never let that stand between us. I do hope he ends up with something on the local airwaves. He is good part of history and would to continue to hear some of his output.

  17. Man, there are a lot of angry postings here! I guess people need to take out some frustration and perhaps a rant on on the keyboard is better than cutting some one off in traffic or giving a co worker a hard time. It's kind of amusing too, but it's strange, because there is no face to face contact.

I believe that's part of the problem with our world; we've become so dependent on the digital media that we've separated ourselves and that creates frustration and isolation. I watched a middle aged couple at dinner in a restaurant the other night, as they sat across the table from each other. Neither looked at each other and they barely spoke a word as their fingers danced over their keyboards while they stared at the tiny screens in their hand. But here I am responding to something that was written a few hours ago, and I have no idea about anything concerning the person who wrote it. Man, ins't it a strange world that our digital technology has helped to create!

  18. Wow, these postings went from why Greg Khin parted ways with KFOX to a political podium for very bored people.
I remember many years of laughing to tears on my way to work listening to Greg, some of his stories I remember well, and always had interesting stories of his travels and his time spent with great rock legends. I'm notbsurebabout all this hate, but I'm remembering him for many times he turned a not so great morning into a good one, Thanks Greg
