Meet Larry Krueger's new Press Agent, KNBR's Gary Radnich

*"Larry is just so great."

*"That's why this show is a winner."

*"Larry, you're just so 'fabulous!"

*"That's why these other shows aren't as popular."

*"You know, without the great Larry, we're mush."

"*Hey Kate, we're damn lucky to have Larry."

*"Larry is off this week, but he will be hosting the 49ers pre and post-game show."

(Psst, hey, 'Cranky: what's Larry having for breakfast tomorrow?).

  1. "Larry saved me". THAT'S the worst. It implies that Radnich doesn't think he can carry his own show alone. And Gary Radnich will NEVER sink to humility at that level. Not the man who has proclaimed over and over "That's why I've lasted in this business".
"I LOVE Larry" next worst. Sure, I bet when Kreuger was pushing insurance policy's after 2005,Radnich never as much as invited the man to his home. He wasn't interested in what Kreuger was selling.
Look, its that kind of fantasy world that he lives in. Its what Bruce punctured and that Radnich couldn't handle. Radnich wants his show to be a " A Home Prairie companion"..only too many years of hearing him rip people..and lie and tell bigoted jokes, just doesn't make it fly.
Hell,he still makes Kate out to be straight. Fantasy life.

    1. As often as he's done the Friday night show with his wife. Never once said to her "You saved me!". Or "I love you" Or "Are you kidding?,she makes this marriage go". And she looks a hell of a lot better in a Yellow summer dress than Larry.

    2. Huh, Radnich makes Kate out to be straight. No, not true at all.

  2. With Kruger on vacation, radnich is really exposed...his stammering, disjointed, interrupted outbursts never complete or make a full sentence...and the forced interaction with Kate Scott is creepy.

She desevers a bigger role now that Larry is on vacation.

    2. Radnich was not bad the days that Ray Woodson replaced ,"The GREAT,K.T.SCOTT!". Ray interjected in a timely, funny manner and I think Radnich was actually relaxed and having fun.

  3. Rich detests Radnich. We get it. But his endless petty attacks are tiresome and becoming embarrassing.

  5. I was channel surfing this AM and caught the Radnich show when he was doing this rant. For the life of me I could not figure out what his point was. I agree that the "interaction" with Kate Scott is more that creepy. It is a toss up on who is more uncomfortable. This show just gets worse and worse, turning into "what useless debate do we have today". The digs at Bruce are comical. Rad never mentions that the 49er postgame show is Bruce and Krueger. How petty can you get.

    1. Actually the 49er postgame is just Krueger this year. Damon is going to do 49er pregame with Krueger, which is kind of too bad, because I thought they both were good co-hosting 49er postgame together last year. I'm sure the 49ers had something to do with this decision, even though Damon at least gets to do 49ers pregame with Krueger. Leave it to KNBR and/or the FO of a Bay Area sports team (the 49ers FO in this case) to ruin a good thing on KNBR.

Yeah, the Gary-Damon "feud" is kind of petty. It's like Gary and Damon, get over it! Gary takes shots at Damon like the one you mentioned as well as Gary referring to 1050 as the minor leagues, and Gary mentioning that they are a family at 680, basically implying that Damon would rather be by himself on 1050.

Damon gets his shots in on Gary. He says that he doesn't listen to the Gary and Larry Show when Gary's there. He even referred to the Gary and Larry Show as the "Glarry" show, which actually wouldn't be a bad nickname for that show. LOL. Damon's criticisms of Gary are true and kind of funny (the usual Kardashian one as well as others), but Gary and Damon look bad when they take shots at each other. It's like, are they seriously still mad at each other for how things went when they co-hosted together for like 2 weeks last August?

They both seriously should move on. Gary got the co-host he probably wanted all along in Krueger, and Damon got a chance to go back to 1050 to host his own show again, which he wanted to do anyway; hosting his own show. But yeah, their "feud" is petty, even though they could leading us on, on this. I wish we knew if this "feud" is real or not. Damon used to respect Gary until that debacle last year.

      Delete
    2. I had not heard that Bruce was not on post game this year. Last year though, Rad only would plug Kreuger. Would be good for them to get over it, but as I see it, Bruce is reacting to Rad. In the beginning, he had no comment on the, as you righty say, DEBACLE. My only take is Rad is more petty and childish in his digs and Bruce takes a little higher road. Bottom line is Bruce is on the rise and Rad is struggling to stay relevant.

      Delete
    3. Yeah, I think that was a decision they made this year. I didn't know about it until Damon mentioned it earlier this week. Damon said Rich Wolcoff is going to do 49er postgame with Krueger this year, which I don’t understand, but we’ll see how it goes. Rich Wolcoff is ok, but can he host a postgame show? Hopefully at some point in the season they change back to Damon hosting 49er postgame with Krueger. They were great doing 49er postgame together last year. Why change it?

I agree that Damon did take the high road at first, and as you said, Damon is probably just reacting to Gary in his criticisms of Gary. He rarely mentions Gary on his show.

I agree, Damon is on the rise, while Gary is struggling to stay relevant. Damon's show is now syndicated, and people in Stockton and Modesto can listen to his show. His show is only going to get bigger, and this syndication in Stockton and Modesto might be a start. Damon could/might eventually go national. I'm sure we all wouldn't be surpised if that happens, even though I hope Damon stays in the Bay Area.

Gary, while he is still a big name here in the Bay Area, his career is winding down, and he doesn't have that same sharpness that he had, even 10 yrs. ago. Gary was the man in the 90's and the early 2000's, but now he's eh.

Gary is like the player that is a big name and was great back in the day but is now past his prime, while Damon is like that younger player that has a great future ahead of him, and is only going to get better.

  9. Highlights from today's show (just the parts I heard; who knows what I missed):

Cranky: Do people actually call you 'dumb blonde?'

    Kate: Yeah, sometimes.

Cranky: Am I the only one who refers to you as 'Kate T. Scott?'

Kate: No, that's caught on, you know, Twitter and all....

Cranky: We don't talk at all outside of work, but when I come in at 9:00, I'm always, 'KATE T. SCOTT!', and you're like,'hi.'

    Kate: Yup.

Cranky: That's why this show works -- 'cause we have Krueger, who's like, 'WOW, that LSU offensive line!,' and we're like, 'who cares?'

    Kate: Yup.

Cranky: People that just want to take shots, I mean, they're just unhappy, frustrated people, right? Now as I was saying about what a jerk Bonds was....

Cranky: ....Bonds would be like, 'screw you.' Buster Posey -- he never says anything either, but, he'll at least play the game.

Cranky (interviewing Bruce Bochy's son Brett): Wow, your voice is a lot higher than your dad's!

    Brett Bochy: Uh.... yeah.

Uncle Cranky: the undisputed king of awkward radio. Not just the king -- the GREAT king!

Seriously, I believe Cranky is genuinely thrilled to have Krueger as his sidekick; Krueger 'saved' him from Damon. And Cranky doesn't consider Krueger a threat to his job, unlike Damon (bad thinking, Cranky). Every Krueger compliment is an unspoken shot at Damon.

    1. Forgot about this highlight:

Caller: I hate the A's TV broadcasters. Fosse's a bore.

Cranky: It's because when you're only playing in front of 11 thousand (really 8 thousand), it's harder for the announcers to be interesting. Tell me I'm right: even if you took Kruk and Kuip -- and those guys are the BEST, the BEST -- even the GREAT Krup and Kuip would have a hard time....

Caller: The A's play half their games on the road. And they have sellouts against the Yankees, Red Sox....

Cranky: Kruk and Kuip are the BEST! The GREAT Kruk and Kuip couldn't make the A's interesting....

Caller: It's the A's announcers that are the problem.

Cranky: A few years ago when the Giants were bad, I had Kruk on three times a week. By the end of the season, I didn't even want to talk about the Giants anymore so I just asked Kruk about himself. He thanked me for it!

  10. Could care less about Radnich, who was clearly the reason Glenn moved to O'Donnell's side. I'm still waiting - even though it's fun to watch Team USA do their basketball thing Men & Women - for Rich's next Fitz-bashing blog. Like it's a shame that Larry Krueger has to put up with 9-Nooner, it's equally a shame that Ann Meyers Drysdale and 76er Coach/Uber Analyst Doug Collins have to exercise more patience on the microphone because of play-by-play more than preparation. Two superb voices have to face THE Shrill!

  13. Why all of the negativity about Radnich? He's been on the air a long time, and that at least deserves some mention and respect. Most of the posters who complain about him are not even talented enough to work doing an overnight shift on some rinky-dink station in Bakersfield, so I think it's simple jealousy.

The same concerning the criticism of Bob Fitzgerald. So he's a 'brown-noser?" SO WHAT! The man has to feed his family and is doing what he has to do to keep his job. Plus I think he does a pretty fine job and I love his work with the Warriors.

And finally, that stuff about the 'Melk-men' being Comcast plants...I know for a fact it's true. A couple of the 'Melk-men are friends of friends and they've admitted it. The 'Melk-men" are paid by Comcast, and given tickets to the games by the Giants. Sweet deal!

    5. To 5:34 – here’s why there’s a lot of negativity towards Uncle Cranky:

      • Cranky had a great 15-year or so run, from the mid-‘80s to the late ‘90s, on KRON and the BLEEDER. (When it was still the Sports Leader.) He was entertaining. Always very shallow. Example: when T.O. made the winning catch in the wild-card playoff game vs Green Bay, Cranky was ready to anoint that catch as “The Catch 2.” With “The Catch” being Dwight Clark’s catch vs Dallas in January ’82. “The Catch 2” – for a WILD CARD GAME. And the 49ers got crushed the next week, in a divisional playoff. Cranky has never had any gravitas as a broadcast journalist. If something kind of impressive has happened in the last 48 hours, Cranky is ready to annoint the event as ‘the greatest (fill in the blank of whatever happened) ever.'

      • Cranky has nothing but contempt for not only his audience, but his sponsors as well. Remember callers like Steve from Union City, or Johnny the Goutman? They were among numerous regulars who would call his show all the time, several times per week. When’s the last time you heard Goutman call? These were Cranky’s biggest fans. What do you think happened to all of them? They all coincidentally vanished? No. They sensed Cranky’s contempt for all of them. He has a contempt for anyone who would actually waste their time by calling a radio show. He has expressed his distaste for his audience countless times over the years, on his own show.

      • And what’s even more mystifying, he hates his sponsors. Many times he has said on the air “I don’t do commercials,” while every single one of his colleagues will plug a product sponsor. Even HOWARD STERN willingly plugs his sponsors. But apparently in Cranky’s warped, narcissistic mind, it’s beneath him to actually support a sponsor WHO IS PAYING FOR HIS SHOW TO BE ON THE AIR. Of course, he’s also said, “I’m a solo act”....except for when the BLEEDER forced him to work in tandem with Tony Bruno, Damon Bruce, and currently with Larry Krueger.

      • And Cranky has actually done the rare commercial.... when his boss has told him he’s had to.

      • Personally, I never cared for or ‘got’ Bruno when he was doing his half-hour shtick with Cranky. Cranky would always announce Bruno as ‘the number one radio personality in the country’ (which was baffling because not only was this not true, but at times, Bruno didn’t even have his own show in which he could make that claim). The whole segment was Cranky and Bruno attempting to outshout each other with irrelevant pop-culture references (“CARRIE FISHER!” “EDDIE FISHER!” “EDDIE MURRAY – THE GREAT EDDIE MURRAY! “ -- followed by gratuitous laughter and Cranky’s inevitable pounding on the console. As if his pounding on the console clinched the segment as great radio.) Thing is, it wasn’t until Cranky was away on vacation, and Bruno did segments with fill-ins such as Ray Ratto, Ray Woodson, or Damon Bruce, that the audience could actually appreciate Bruno’s talent. Ironically, it was Cranky’s inept handling of the Bruno segments which got Bruno fired -- and Cranky's close friend the 'Fabulous Bruno' was never mentioned on Cranky's show again. If Damon had been doing the Bruno segment every day, Bruno would likely have a permanent spot on the BLEEDER. Like maybe noon to three. Or nine to noon.

    6. This is part 2 of the above comment:

      • This may be a cheap shot, but Cranky’s lost his fastball. He simply cannot express a coherent thought. He can’t finish a sentence without having another thought interfere with whatever he was struggling to say. His constant refrain of ‘nobody cares’ is betrayed by the fact that the only thing Cranky cares about or knows about is sports. He wears his supposed love for his parents like some badge of honor, like no one else cares about their family except him. (How did that first marriage end up, Cranky?) The awkward interactions with guests, colleagues (Kate Scott, and who can forget the constant interrogating of Ray Woodson with the question ‘you’d do Kim Kardashian if she knocked on your door, right?’, followed by the karmically awkward interview a couple years ago with her stepfather Bruce Jenner, when suddenly any memory of sexist suggestions involving his stepdaughter was swept under the rug), and most of all (take a breath, almost done....), the constant ‘shots’ he has taken at everyone – local media rivals and non-rivals, athletes whom he is obviously jealous of, you name it. That is why he is a target. This guy has built his entire career on ‘taking shots’ at people. Cranky thinks he’s some so t of comedian, a Don Rickles or something. He’s the funniest guy in the room, and everyone is supposed to fall down laughing at his ‘jokes’ and thank him for their career. (“I MADE Dennis O’Donnell/Vern Glenn/Dan Dibley/Kate Scott/Ralph Barbieri/Jamie Sire etc.”) Karma comes around, and in the Internet era, which Cranky has no understanding of at all, now he becomes the public target.

      • Plus, he has no sports insight and panders in a patronizing, insulting manner to the black audience. (Like when he says Rod Brooks or Monte Poole ‘look like they did something;’ we know what he means: THEY’RE BLACK. Or the fake love of hip-hop and identifying with ‘the bruthas.’)

5:34, you revealed two tells that you are either very close to Cranky and Fitzgerald, or you work for the BLEEDER: first, you claimed you have contacts which know that the ‘Melk Men’ are on the Giants/Comcast payroll. Second, you actually said you enjoy Fitzgerald’s work with the Warriors. That’s an out-and-out lie. NOBODY in the Bay Area enjoys this guy’s work. If you really do, then you must not have been in the area when Chris Cohan decided to go cheap and fire Greg Papa, the best Bay Area play-by-play man since Bill King, to hire this hack. If you’d left the part out where you enjoy Fitzgerald’s work, you’d have some credibility. But you went too far there.
Sorry if this is too long, Rich. (I wrote the above statement, too.)

Since you sound knowledgeable about the business, why do you think he is still on the air.

    8. Simply put, Cranky is a local legend, and there was a time when his show was nearly ‘must-listen;’ but for the last few years he’s been running on fumes. I will often still tune in to the first hour of the show if I can; but that is as much because I can’t listen to ‘the Rise Guys’ (Cranky is irritating, but the Rise Guys are irritating and at the same time, bland – an unforgivable combination), and don’t have much interest in 1050’s nationally syndicated shows. And I will admit – there is a perverse entertainment to be found in Cranky’s incoherence and bloviating. I’m not someone who’s going to say “How can anyone listen to this guy,” then proceed to knock whatever he did on the air for the last month.

But I wouldn’t be that surprised if his reign ends soon – maybe a year, year and a half, maybe much sooner. I thought Ralph was as close to untouchable as anyone on the BLEEDER, and look how that turned out.

As far as the Melkman being Comcast plants, that's old news. Everyone who reads this blog is aware that they're on the Bear/Griggs payroll, and if you don't, you haven't been payin attention.

As far at Fitzgerald is concerned, are you mad at him because the Warriors gave him Papa's job, or are you mad because you don't like the guy? As I said before, the guy is just trying to feed his family and does a pretty decent job, so why don't you lay off with the ten cent comments about him?

By the way, what difference does it make who does the Warriors
play by play anyway...no one watches or listens to them except the mindless idiots who spent 150 bucks for a seat and watch this pitiful team in person. Most of the folks who go to the games aren't real basketball fans anyway. Most of the hardcore NBA fans got so disgusted by the atmosphere at the arena and the style of play that the 21st century athletes exibit on the court that they abandoned the sports long ago.

Who wants to go to an NBA arena, watch overpaid, spoiled athletes go one on one, and then have to listen to all of the
noise and nonsense ("GET ON YOUR FEET AND GREET YOUR GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS!) that accompanies the games, plus the stupid pizza guys, the annoying screaming juvenile announcer 'Franco Finn,'
the Warriors Girls, the laser lights, the banner advertising, the t-shorts being shot into the stands...it's so annoying!

If basketball were as popular as some think it is, they wouldn't need all of that gargage to lure people to the arena!

    2. From Gaga V

Hi 9:43, thanks for actually reading all that. First off, I read the recent blog entry that revealed that the Melkmen are paid plants. Yeah, this is not news.

The Fitzgerald thing goes back to when the BLEEDER decided Pete Franklin was showing his age and his days were numbered (familiar theme with the BLEEDER) – this was around ’96; so on came his new co-host, Fitzgerald (who’d been buried harmlessly on the night slot), and “The King and the Kid” was born. I loved Pete, even got to sit in the studio during his show once, and I couldn’t figure out, nor stand why this smug idiot was jabbing and arguing with ‘the King.’ About a year later, Franklin was sent into semi-retirement, and guess who got the noon slot. (Ironically, at that point I ventured over to the new Ticket 1050 with this new afternoon guy named Rod Brooks.)

You can probably pinpoint the date that Fitzgerald truly became hated in the Bay Area to around late ’98, when the NBA was in lockout, but Chris Cohan replaced the beloved Greg Papa with the much cheaper Fitzgerald. Papa didn’t keep quiet about his outrage – apparently he and Fitzgerald were friends, and Papa may have been a mentor of sorts. But when Fitzgerald took the Warriors TV spot, apparently he had never informed Papa before the fact, and Papa felt betrayed. Now, does taking the job mean Fitzgerald was in the wrong? Broadcasting is a cut-throat industry, and I don’t really blame him – it was his big break, after all. The way it was portrayed in the press did make Fitzgerald out to be the sneaky villain. Apparently the BLEEDER was also not happy with Fitzgerald’s tactics; it was in the news for several days that Fitzgerald had been suspended from his radio show (this was during the Bob Agnew/Tony Salvadore era), and were about to fire him. (Maybe the station didn’t want one of their employees doing TV opposite the station’s radio broadcasts of the Warriors; maybe there was more to it than that.) Apparently Fitzgerald pleaded his way out of what looked to be certain termination.

For a brief period before the NBA lockout ended (late ’98/early ’99), Greg Papa was an interim noon host on the BLEEDER. (He was soon to be starting his new job as play-by-play for the San Antonio Spurs.) The question of who would be the new noon host was up in the air. Finally, it was announced at the end of Ralph and Tom’s show. Ralph made the announcement – the new hosts for 12 to 3.... are Bob Fitzgerald and Rod Brooks. I’ll never forget Ralph’s comment – he congratulated Brooks for earning his new gig; and then he said ‘in the case of Fitzgerald, it just goes to show where backstabbing and brown-nosing will get you.’ That was a rather shocking thing to say on the air, even for Ralph.

I don’t know if Papa and Fitzgerald ever patched things up, but I’ve noticed that virtually every broadcaster in local sports has sat in on Chronicle Live with Papa or whoever else is hosting. Except Fitzgerald. Could be coincidence, I don’t know.

I’m not going to go into Fitzgerald’s style as a radio host – everyone is pretty much agreed on that. (And that would be a rant in itself.) And I actually posted on this blog recently that he is a competent play-by-play announcer; because he doesn’t have time during games to exhibit his ‘jerkiness’ (to quote Cranky). But the play-by-play position of a local team is a monumentally important role; they are the conduits to the fans. Imagine replacing Vin Scully, or the late Chick Hearn, or Bill King, Lon Simmons, Jon Miller, Kruk and Kuip, with hacks. The Warriors had gone through some forgettable announcers after Bill King, but they struck gold with Papa, and he was with the team for over a decade. Just another debacle of the Chris Cohan era.

It's amazing that monstrosity is still on the air, even more incredible that some people are listening to it.
You've heard of 'appointment radio?' Their show is just the opposite...it's unlistenable!

  17. Let's stop even talking aboujt Bob "I went to Notre Dame and the rest of you flunkies went to state colleges!" Fitzgerald, the backstabbing, sniveling weasel-like rat fink. Fitz has made it a habit of brown-nosing and backstabbing to get wherever he's desired.
It's just sad that local radio and Warrior management allowed him to get away with such base behavior. Eventually, karma will come around and he'll get fired too.

  18. Raddy did mention his wife today in the manner he usually does on the radio "She was on my back". But Larry? Love, love, love and roses from Gary to Larry. How sweet.
He used say that his wife would ask him why he didn't laugh at her jokes like he did with Tony Bruno..and that she told him "Maybe he should marry Tony".
So Radnich answered his wife by turning up the love talk 100x with Larry.
Like I always say..the more Radnich praises somebody..the bigger asshole they must be. His wife must be a wonderful woman. Because Raddy says she does everything wrong.
