The lost art of Simple Conversation on Radio

Conversation is a dead art in local radio.

I use the word "art" because simple verbal back and forths have been lost in the fog of ubiquitous sound effects, "drops", bits", otherwise known as artificial dialogue.

There is no such thing as genuine talk. The ad-lib card has been relegated to foreign turf. Beautiful, ain't it?

There are exceptions, of course, but the morning zoo herd rules the day. I'm not going to mention the usual suspects on AM radio, but I'll give you a hint: think "frat boys." (Cue to applause sound).

Just once it would be something of a minor miracle if people actually talked to one another. No designed segs nor anything revolving around prep time. The Olympics and NBC were the talk, (and still are) around the weekend, particularly the Opening Ceremony. Would it have been that difficult to articulate a simple opinion or two about that subject matter devoid of the usual dumb drivel? Nope.

Oh, and Romney said a few interesting things. Cut to coffee break.

Yes, and in other breaking news, the Pony Express is no longer running and from here on out mail will be carried exclusively on fast-moving trains at speeds of up to 40 miles per hour.

  2. Yes, Rich again has it right. Simple conversation is gone, as well as simple, clean, crisp, deft radio broadcasters. Take the past 24 hours in local radio.

Pat Thurston - KGO/KGONE - opened her show, which my girlfriend heard. She's not a talk radio fan. She remarked, "She said "aahh" three times in her first few minutes. I can't listen to her." I replied, "She used to be one of the newbie / worst on KGO, now she's one of the better ones left."

Brian Copeland talks about racism for a full hour. *Ray Taliaferro crickets*

Cumulus VP / hack has numerous ads on for salespeople. This tells me that either a) he lost a lot of professional salespeople, and b) his salepeople left because ratings dropped, so sales dropped, their commissions (income) dropped.

Brian Copeland had comedians on for an hour, with few callers. "Listen" Radio?

Karel comes on, makes me laugh twice, then I turn him off. Dr. Bill too hard to find, watch Olympics.

Olympic announcers and press do a smarmy job. Obsession with lambasting Michael Phelps. Travesty proclaimed when a US team misses the gold medal by half a second. Sensationalism rules.

KFOG rocked this AM since we rejected the carpetbaggers. One victory!

Ronn Owens - gets very heated over Israeli athletes (40 year anniversary of killings) not being honored in London along with the millions killed in WWI and WWII. Consistent for Ronn and 810.

    1. By far the worst conversationalist is Karel. I don't know why anyone calls his show or agrees to be ”interviewed” by him. He can turn any topic or issue and make it about: Karel. He always finds a way to insert his husband's death, his lack of a boyfriend and his dire financial woes into any topic. He asks guests a question, then before they answer he jumps in with an answer from Karel's perspective and then tells them to hold the thought until after the break.

  3. Owens had a glorious San Francisco liberal day - a Gold Medal!

1st he discussed supposed anti-Semite behavior, though no one else has made this claim. (The Olympics.)

2nd he discussed racism and Obama. He was good on this one, showing how Obama has played the Race Card several times (without the facts).

3rd, he discussed supposed anti-gay views.

WHAT Owens won't discuss on KGONE:

    Gangs and gang violence.

The lack of Fathers in minority communities - even Obama commented on this!

Where Gene Burns and Dr. Bill are, along with all of his former colleagues.

    1. The Olympics have been anti-Semitic in their ignoring the Israeli athletes who were slain by terrorists 40 years ago.

Obama HAS played the race card several times; the Harvard professor/police incident; the Martin/Zimmerman case; ignoring the Black Panthers' intimidation of voters in PA; on and on.

OK troops, before you pull the trigger on your "Fuck you you fascist" posts, remember this. I'm all for smoking marijuana recreationally as well as for medicinal purposes. Eric Holder, Obama's AG has gone after medicinal marijuana dispensaries more than the previous administration did. Whatever you may have thought about the previous administration (and I was a very vocal critic of that one as well), Obama's IS worse. Not only worse, but betraying it's own base in many instances.

Pulling the race card and gay rights are Ronn Owens staples. Those topics are his bread and butter.
Does he have any other interest? Perhaps not.
For new topics, maybe he should consider gambling addiction. For example, a certain talk show host who frequents a local horse race track.

  4. Conversation? Who ever heard of that word> The whole concept is foreign to today's clueless radio programmers. They think that if they don't attach enough 'bells and whistles' to their shows that the
    young demographic' won't listen.

Well guess what geniuses? (and you should know this), but the 'young demographic' doesn't exist anymore! Only about 10 percent of all people under the age of 30 are listening to the radio anymore. They're too busy texting, tweeting, facebooking, listening to the i-pod or perusing the latest web sites on their i-pad to care what radio is doing. The 'young demographic' is no longer relevant. So why do programmers continue to cater to them?
Why do some people continue to deny global warming? There are a lot of clueless people out there, that's why!

People over the age of 30? The people who have the most money and are buying the products that these stations' sponsors advertise? Who cares about them...they're too old!

Inspiring, creative radio programming, my ass!

  5. Ms. Thurston is not as talented as she thinks she is. Patty does not do her homework and sucks in the art of ad-libbing- ahhhhh, ahhhh, ahhh. Whenever she do that, it means she is unprepared. She spends too much, bribing the labor w/ her sugar-based food. That is why she gets her job. Barbie Simpson and Christine Craft runs wide circles around her. Rich, this blog of yours should get awards and tons of advertisers. You are the greatest.

    1. Let's play tape from KAREL'S Saturday show (7/28) when Karel announces off-air (but still heard by his webcast and website to Brian, his "producer" -- "Did you hear Pat Thurston tonight? Terrible ... just terrible. She's not prepared. The HOST is supposed to KNOW the answers of guests ... not ask questions. We aren't live, are we? Just you, me and Dominic listening in?" "Yeah, unless your webcast is on ..."

Karel: "I'm sorry, but she's just terrible. Maureen is getting sooo much better, week after week. She really is trying and wants to make this work. I got to hang with her last night and funny? We laughed so hard we almost wet ourselves. I wish her well."

Yep. KGOne is now a farm system training ground for up-and-comers.

I'm not a big Thurston fan, either -- to uppity and elistist while her tone indicates too much ego and unprepared "authority" to convince people she knows her stuff ... while often following off the far-left cliff.

    3. Didn't she let out that she worked for the CIA or Secret Service? *shudder the thought*

What exactly is her area of expertise?

All I can figure is that she is the Shaun Nix replacement... now there was a socialist koo-koo who simply regurgitated what her Berkeley profs had told her!

KGO 810 AM History: I recall after 9/11 hit, Shaun Nix from was subbing for Gene Burns from 7-10 PM; and hater Bernie Ward was on from 10 PM - 1 AM. So for a solid week, we heard how AMERICA caused 9/11!! Nix pulled in uber-liberal profs from Berkeley I had never heard of to tell us how we were a bad country, and how the "chickens had come home to roost".

Thankfully, a week later Gene Burns returned from his medical recovery. He eviscerated the garbage we had heard using simple logic, using history, and sometimes referring to the Constitution. He didn't ignor what had happened on KGO - Like Owens - he directly referred to what he had heard, rebutted the silliness, called it out and punted the sophmoric logic across town. It was an all-time classic Gene Burns moment... he also relayed how he had to sit in that hospital bed, and later at home, and listen night after night to how we had casued 9/11, and how it angered him to no end.

      Delete
    4. To my recollection Shaun Nix was gone from KGO by 9/11, but I could be wrong, but if you only heard that US caused 9/11 you only listened to a few select hosts. Certainly Ronn did not say that, nor did John Rothman (although) he was only on week-ends. I think Pete Wilson was on in the afternoon, he would not have said anything like that, and how about Bill Wattenberg. Thinking back I do remember Shaun interviewing the professor, mostly his point of view was, that going to war (i.e. invade Afganistan) would not be the solution, he thought we could "talk" to the enemy. Which I totally disagree with, not when the enemy is the taliban and AL Queda. However to say that almost everyone on KGO had that view is incorrect. However, your point about how Gene would go about setting the record straigt is correct.

Sure, we've had our mistakes... yet we continually bail many a country out by their ballsack whenever there is a problem. They take our food, military assistance, equipment, money, and then often (not always) spit in our face.

Example: a friend went to Kuwait for work. Kuwait is one of THE richest countries on the face of the earth. This is after we kicked Sadaam's a## out. As they walked through the central market with his friend, shopkeepers SPIT in front of their feet!!

Sorry, I don't need the Obama Teleprompter Apology Tour... and if he is so damn smart, why can't he speak on his own two feet without reading his speechwriters-polled words?

Why doesn't he have press conferences? And why hasn't he passed a budget in 3 years? (He can't even get a SINGLE Democratic vote!)

    7. @1158 as is typical of his ilk confuses the issue at hand. We are not talking about Kwait or teleprompters. The 9/11 attack was prompted by American policy in the Middle East. It is common knowledge. If you think the USA has been a ”fair” influence in that region then you are extremely naive. With respect to Iraq, the USA is responsible for over 1 million civilian deaths. If someday a group of Iraqis attacks the USA you will be outraged and will call them ungrateful.savages. American Imperialists' behavior is very predictable.

  9. Would I have liked to have seen the Israeli athletes honored? Yes.

But, what is special about a 40-year anniversary, over a 36-year or 8-year anniversary?

I think Britain's focus on two world wars was fine, where millions died; and they made reference to all others who have lost lives.

Interesting that a LIBERAL producer in love with Socialism (see the Opening Ceremony), is the same one who passed by Israel.

The real issue is President Barack Obama bowing to the Middle East, and NOT recognizing Jeruselem as the capital of Israel!!! Amazing. And Russia is talking about putting missiles closer to the U.S.

We've listened to his appeal to the emotions as if he is the only one who's ancestry has suffered. Rothmann is similarly closed minded. If anyone is going to save humanity it isn't these two guys.

The British are hosting, it's their show. They haven't made a fuss over the mistreatment of the Palestinians either. Ronn should stop whining. How often do we sit down at the dinner table and have substantive conversations with family or friends? I think we have lost the ability to listen to others and respond with respect and a modicum of intelligence.
Radio mirrors the society in which it exists. Therefore, we find mediocrity, ill temper and bad faith.

But hey, at least everyone can wait in line to see a doctor, and receive an expensive procedure assuming the "death panel" agrees you are worth it. We need another stimulus and more "shovel ready" projects. After all, only about 10% of the 1 Trillion stimulus went to infrastructure the last time. But hey, we got "cash for clunkers"! 21. 10:55 AM, what do you call 8.2% unemployment, slowed minimal growth, real unemployment of 15%, and $1.5 TRILLION a year in new debt? The economy is already "cratered"! The examples are almost endless as I thought about it. And Obama can't run as "I'm this great President of EVERYONE", instead he has to sub-divide every group, and give them freebies to vote for him. Amnesty to Latinos, $$$ to the unions, free contraception to women, etc.

This is why Democrats know they can't win running on Obama's record; they have to call Romney every name in the book.

Like most elections (except for say, Reagan's second term), 8-10 states will decide the election.

Obama now has a negative rating amongst most voteres in 36 states. While he will still retain his core (the "Free Lunch") groups, energy has diminished, and turnout will likely be lower for him. (Dick Morris predicts a landslide for Romney.)

    - College grads can't find jobs - they have to think again, "Change" didn't help them.
    - African Americans will still vote for him by over 90%, but his stance on gay marriage, and lack of jobs will again dampen their turnout.
    - Jewish-Americans have to think twice about how he has turned a rude shoulder to israel, hasn't visited Israel (our solid ally), and buddies up to Palestine.
    - Catholic Bishops have finally found their backbone on Obama's stance that they have to fund contraception, which to the Church is MURDER. There goes the seperation of Church and State!
    - Anyone in the Midwest who works in energy has to see that his turing down the huge pipeline is horrible.
    - $4.00 a gallon gas robs every American household of approx. $2,000 a year. That's no fun!! (Well, Senator Obama did say that his Green Dreams would require energy prices to "necessarily skyrocket".)
    - Working class sees huge unemployment numbers.
    - ObamaCare adds at least 21 new taxes.
    - TaxaGeden will, with ObamaCare, be the two largest tax increases in the history of our nation.
    - His inability to find budget cuts means that the military will be GUTTED, which fires up law-abiding citizens.
    - Independents - who are largely concerned about fiscal matters (like myself) - see $1.5 TRILLION a year in new debt, $5 TRILLION in new debt by Obama, plus ObamaCare, and shudder.

The GOP used to be fiscally minded, and says they will get back to that. Your attempts to paint every white conservative male as racist is so silly and ignorant, considering that no human on the face of the planet has saved as many black lives as George Bush 2.

While Bill Clinton had the travesty of Somalia and Rwanda, Bush's President's Emergency Plan for Aids Relief (PEPFAR) was a "revolution" that transformed healthcare in Africa and has been praised as the most significant aid program since the end of colonialism.

Despite all this, free money, free goodies and a slick talker are hard to overcome. But he sure plays a TON of golf!

(including thousands of young American soldiers), not to mention billions of dollars and a huge bit of American prestige.
Bush's administration also accelerated deregulation of industry which led to the banking scandal and economic meltdown.

Missed opportunity and thounds of innocent americans died as a result. So in a real sense, the whole post-9/11 middle east war was Clinton's fault. Fact. But, don't let that get in the way of your class-warfare retoric.

    2. Good point. He may have had a 2-week brohaha if he took out OBL and 13 of his boyfriends / wives / girfriends and 20 of his camels, but $100 Million here, a water plant there and maybe a dozen US visas calms those waters.

    1. Hey 7:53...for your info...I am not informed...I happen to work in the news media and know what I'm talkking about, unlike you who probably relies on Fox TV news for your information. You were obviously not paying attention when Clinton went after Bin Lade, not once, but twice during his administration. Obviously you were not paying attention.
But don't let that get in the way of the facts. And by the way, if you're dumb enough to actually think that Goerge W. Bush was a good leader, then you need to wake up and smell the CA CA! Bushie was a tool of people like Cheney and Rice, and that whole crew should never have been allowed to take office anyway, as they stole the election when the supreme court gave it to Bush and stopped the Florida recount (mandated by Florida's state constitution)
which would have shown that Kerry was gong to win. It that had happened, we wouldn't have had Iraq, we woulon't have had 9/11 (because Bin Laden would have been caught aheas of time), and we wouldn't have had the economic meltdown that was set into motion when the repubs okayed deregulation and oversight of the banking industry. So pay more attention to the facts nest time, OKAY PAL!?
Conservatives such as the late Wm F Buckley Jr would be spinning in their graves if they could see how Bush and his ilk and the tea pariers wrecked the GOP and gave it a bad name! It's idiots like you that have helped accelerate this country's downfall by voting in these nit-wits and tools of big business! CONGRATS YOU FOOL!!!

    2. Hey Anon 8:49, if I take you at your word that you work in the media, then Rich here is 100% right about the drones who are now working locally. And I say a liberal drone!! (My terms, not Rich's.)

I voted for Bush, often held my nose. I'm not happy with the second war, the 1st one I had questions about, and would have preferred if we sent in 1,000 inspectors... why 10 or 20? I wasn't happy about his $400 Billion deficit, which he brought down to about $100 Billion before he left office. I wasn't a big fan of NCLB, throwing money at a failed system when we know what works from any Tiger or Jewish Mom - 2 demanding, loving parents! Pretty simple.

Clinton went after Obama 2 times. With water? Paper wads? hahahahah We were paying attention, while he chased every skirt in sight. Well, at least Bubba could moderate; unlike Billary and Obama, 2 far Lefties.

Bush a tool? He came up with the idea of PEPFAR, which saved millions of African lives from AIDS! Bush also established the largest marine reserve in Hawaii, speeding up a laborius process.

His tax cuts early in his first term also shortened the Clinton Recession, and jump started the economy - whereas Obamas spending plan failed.

Now you want to back long-chin Kerry and his Band-Aid Purple Heart? Oh please! Talk about a 1%-er!! And when he came out of Nam he said that he witnessed innocents butchered, he witnessed war crimes - well then, why didn't he tell us WHO committed these horrible acts?? Actually, we can all read between the lines... he figured out an easy way to get a Purple Heart, with which he was trying to become President. And a filthy rich wife doesn't hurt!! So genuine... not.

Even with Bandaid Kerry as Pres, we still would have had the "meltdown" as the Democrats pushed the every person should own a home philosophy, and threatened banks and others with jail time if they didn't! No down payment? Who cares! Credit score sucks? the white man is racist! (Read Thomas Sowell.)

Actually, my Liberal media drone, the Tea Party is civil, consistent, and rational. The Recession, Obama, and all took a $100 Billion deficit to $1.5 TRILLION a year.

Yep, its the Mommy Party vs the Daddy Party, and Mommy has spent us over a cliff with her expensive jewls, SUVs, lavish vacations and silly online useless classes.

Idiots? Name calling 1A, and using a term like "tools" shows how little your pea brain is. Rich and half the readers here would run circles around you in a debate. Now please, have fun in the Triangle tonight.

    3. Hey 8:49 pm, "Hey 7:53...for your info...I am not informed..." I agree! You are not informed. I work in the defense industry and know Clinton passed on an opportunity to take out UBL prior to 9/11. Drink the cool aid if you want to disbelieve that. The economic meltdown was set in motion by our friend Barney Frank and Fanny/Freddie who made loans to people who never had the ability to repay them. Blaming GWB for 9/11 is pure stupidity, but that is a zone you are obviously very comfortable in. Obama is heading us (and Isreal) to a nuclear war with Iran. As George Patton said, the best defense is a good offense. Our president only wants to kiss ass and apologize to all in the middle east. Very sad. The "shining city" that Ronald Reagan often talked about is a dim ash heap where obese slugs have their hand out for their government welfare checks.

  25. Hey Anon 8:49, you sound like a stooge for the Limbaugh and Hannity crowd. Where do you get off pawning off this ridiculous info? What planet have you been living on for the last 13 years? Certainly not planet earth. Bush, preserving natural resources, like the preserve in Hawaii...what and he should get a medal for signing into law a proposal he had nothing to do with? That's like saying Richard Nixon deserves credit for the clean air and clean water acts because he signed them into law back in 1970 (even though he had nothing to do with their proposals), or that Nixon should get credit for the Pt Reyes National Seashore Act, which preserved western Marin, because he signed that into law (Democrats like the late, great Marin Congressman Clem Miller deserve credit for that one, but you probably don't even know or care who Clem Miller was.)

George W. could have cared less for the environment, unless he wanted to exploit for his oil, mining, cattle, or timber buds.

Speaking of corruption, those are four lobbies that use up valuable public resources, pay very little to the government to operate on public land, and make obscene profits. And in all in the name of capitalism and creating jobs? Yeah, right!

But don't knock those Repubs.,..they provide really inspired leadership!

With all of your bluster and your bluff, you're nothing more than a pea-brained conservative who is living in the past. Sir, Y\you're the kind of a man who would run around a cracker box because it says: "Rip around the top!"

    1. More name calling? I've listed dozens of facts that seem to make you uncomfortable.

Per the decisive and bold move by President Bush to protect this pristine environmental area, Bush used the 1906 Antiquities Act to speed up the process and give it **extra protection**, just like he did previously for African Burial Ground in Manhattan. (Humm, I thought he was a racist? hah)

In April 2006, Pres Bush and his wife viewed the docu film 'Voyage to Kure' at the White House along with its director, Jean-Michel Cousteau (son Jacques). Compelled to move by the film, Bush moved quickly to protect the area.

Joshua Reichert explained the importance to Jim Lehrer:
"Monument status is quicker; it's more comprehensive; and it's more permanent. Only an act of Congress can undo a monument designation. The sanctuary process, it takes longer; it involves more congressional input, more public debate, more hearings and meetings. And he [George W. Bush] obviously made a decision today to, actually, take a bold step and create something which is going to be immediate, that the law applies immediately to this place now."

Per oil, what do these *evil* oil companies do with it? Hide it under thier beds? No, no, you use it to drive your Volvo or Mercedes to Berkeley Bowl or wherever. And they make equal to, or below, the typical earnings rate, percentage wise. But if you want to drive a car powered by soybean oil, knock yourself out!

And I love my In-and-Out Burger. Don't you? Obscene profits? What are those?

BTW, see what Israel faces now without Obama's support?

Today in the Jerusalem Post: "In a speech published on his website Thursday, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said the ultimate goal of world forces must be the annihilation of Israel."

"Speaking to ambassadors from Islamic countries ahead of 'Qods Day' ('Jerusalem Day'), an annual Iranian anti-Zionist event established in 1979 by Ayatollah Khomeini and which falls this year on August 17, Ahmadinejad said that a "horrible Zionist current" had been managing world affairs for "about 400 years." ... "

      And Obama spilts hairs?

  30. Notice how many San Francisco Democrats can only call names?

Let's just take one example: Gov. Bobby Jindahl, while not a great public speaker, is an amazing individual. He was an athlete, started a newsletter, a retail candy business, and a mail order software company. Graduated with TWO tough majors from college, by 20. Oh yes, with HONORS in both majors.

Was accepted into Harvard Medical School, but accepted a Rhodes Scholarship instead. Criticized Bush for not enacting more spending cuts; criticized Obama strongly per his bungling of Hurricane Katrina. Oh yeah, he delivered his 3rd child at home. Not the best public speaker.

It was democrats who questioned his ethnic background and religion.

How about Chris Christie, or Marco Rubio? All solid.

  31. Tea Party vs Occupy Crowd:

Tea Party events: 0 deaths, 0 rapes, public places left cleaner than before.

Occupy events: multiple deaths, 100s of rapes, 1000s of violent crimes, and public places used like a urinal in your local pub on Saturday night.

    Next.
