Snow on Knibber: Dusty Baker snubs Giants Tribute dinner to '02 WS team

JT Snow was on Knibber talking about the Giants tribute dinner in the city last night. The team was honoring members of the '02 World Series squad.

Snow mentioned too that Dusty Baker, who managed that team did not attend the dinner. In fact, even after several pleas from his players, Baker still did not make the dinner.

I know why.

It's no secret that when Baker's IRS tax issues came to light, the Giants leaked the story.

Baker was hurt and angry. That might be a major reason why he snubbed the dinner.

And when he and the Giants parted company after that '02 season, Larry Baer essentially threw Dusty under the bus. That and the tax issue. It's a Larry Baer specialty.

I don't think the Kruk and Kuip guys will mention this. Amy G? Are you kidding me? And I also think this will get little notice on the talk shows here. Nothing new. There's a reason they call it the toy dept.

  1. Radnich has a new philosophy that he say's "its too personal" and HE wont allow that talk on his show. That its what the company wants also Radnich wont admit. Radnich who applauds Krueger for going off on people..is now pious? hypocrite.
Sports used to be the toy department..but now that billions of dollars and politics and big business have taken over it's the golden toilet business. And many sports hosts will wade in it for a buck.
KNBR is too happy to smear who the Warriors and Giants want smeared. Like I said years ago right here-they would eat their own for a dollar..Now..go look at Ralph.
I'm sure right for being told I'm wrong huh? Just amazing what I see with open eyes.

    2. Excellent post at 1:00pm.

  2. Maybe so, but Baer and Baker sure seemed chummy at the ballpark today.

  3. I don't blame Dusty for blowing them off. The 2002 debacle notwithstanding, bringing up personal off-the-field stuff like IRS / tax problems is crossing the line, in my opinion. If you want to talk about Dusty's accomplishments both as a player and as a manager, fine. But to bring up ancillary stuff (that has NOTHING to do with his abilities as a manager) is wrong. Sorry but I am siding with Dusty on this one. The Giants management can go pound salt.

  4. How about the fact that he is the manager for a different team and has duties to his current team and game plan to prepare for the next day

  5. Rich, you know damn good and well that Kruk, Kuip, Miller, Flemming and Amy G. are employees of the Giants. They aren't investigative reporters or columnists. Like evey one of us, they do what their bosses tell them to do. This constant whining about how they're homers who don't call it like it is is just plain ignorant. It's not ther job to criticize the organization.

    1. Is'nt the Bay Area Media hip and chic?
Are'nt they above cheer leading for the local baseball team?
Gary Radnich has a favoriate saying. The Bay Area does not have homers. That is an attribute of the midwest and South.(said in a condensending and patronizing tone)

  6. That's OK with me. Dusty Baker is the one who BLEW the 2002 WS by yanking Ortiz in the 6th game. He can SUCKIT!!!!

  7. Hey Rich, since you're so critical of KNBR, why are you posting news you get from their broadcast?

  8. Dusty is a class act and had every reason to snub the dinner if Larry Baer was there. Dusty has been around too long to want to put up with that nonsense...

Baer is also the guy who went along with the team owners telling General Managing Partner Bill Neukom to 'take a hike,' as some petty, egotistical rich guys who own part of the club didn't like the fact that he was doing what they had asked him to do (overseeing the operation of the front office and trying to improve the club). The players and Manager Bochy really liked Neukom, but a bunch of whining little spoiled brats,
(namely the Burns' daughters and one of their husbands) didn't like the fact that Neukom was spending money to improve the club on the field, and wasn't "properly consulting them."

Harmon and Sue Burns would roll in their graves if they knew how selfish and small minded their kids and their son in law were to help stage that move, and the Giants handled it clumsily. They were lucky the media pretty much avoided making much comment. I think also that they felt jealous because Neukom got a lot of 'face time' (rightly so) after the Giants won it in 2010.

Back to Dusty...he was a class act and the best and longest tenured manager the Giants ever had in their west coast history. That nit-wit who wrote in at 4:40 saying that Baker should have kept Ortiz in Game six of the World Series seems to forget that one of the Giants biggest strengths that year was a bullpen (F. Rodriguez, Robb Nen, Tim Worrell, Scott Eyre) and that if you have a bullpen that is as good as that one, and you have a 5-0 lead in the seventh inning, it would seem an easy and logical decision to go with the bullpen to 'close the door' on the Angels.
Unfortunately, Scott Spezio had a great at bat. No whining please about F. Rodriguez getting victimized by Spezio's HR. If you remember, Spezio fould off a bunch of pitches and worked the count and then hit one of Felix's best pitches. Some times you have to give the other guys credit because their best beat your best. if you know anything about sports, you should know that.

  9. My question is this: why was Steve Moskowitz not called in to assist Baker with the tax issues? An offer in compromise perhaps? In all seriousness, whoever leaked that information is a real a-hole.

  10. Dusty is coaching the Reds and they are playing the Giants! I really don't think there is anything more to it. He was on the field pregame in a Giants jersey with the 2002 team. That was amazing to me

  11. God forbid it KNBR brings up this story. Never.
You can also count on the Chronicle sports writers to do their best to quash this story (friction between Dusty and Larry Baer).
The Chronicle knows who pays their salary.

  12. I'm sure Hank Greenwald still feels all warm and fuzzy about Larry Baer as well.

    1. The Giants hired his kid. So hey - maybe he is warm and fuzzy to Baer and Doug Greenwald is good, by the way.

    2. Greenwald got in a snit because the Giants wouldn't sell his book in their Dugout Stores. I'm sure Hank is over it by now.

  13. Dusty Baker will never win a championship, he is just like the Ranger's manager. Need to make changes as needed. To become a champion you need to manage like a champion. That is what B.B. proved in 2010. Reds will a great season but will lose out in the playoffs. Never liked Baker as the manager for Giants.

  14. You have no idea what you're talking about. Dusty Baker is a fine manager, although perhaps a shade lower than a Tony LaRussa or a JIm Leyland. But the guy always has his players backs and they love him for it, and that counts for a lot. When he managed the 2002 Giants, they had Barry Bonds and Jeff Kent practically fighting each other every other day, but he managed to keep them from beating each other's brains out, and instead got them to focus on being the best one-two punch in a Giants' lineup since Mays/McCovey.

Dusty took three Giants teams to the post season, won two division titles, one National League pennant, and in his rookie year of 1993 the Giants won a regular season record 103 games.
In his first year in Chicago he took the Cubs a Steve Bartman caught foul ball away from their first pennant in 58 years, and his Reds teams have been solid, going to the playoffs twice since he arrived there.

Sure, he's had talent, but Dusty is passionate, understands the players, and has always been a spiritual leader in the clubhouse. Players trust him because he understands them, having been an outstanding player himself for the better part of his big league career.

You obviously haven't been paying much attention to baseball, because Dusty Baker HAS proven his worth. You sound like the ridiculous Larry Krueger when he was always trying to 'stir it up' back in the years 2000-2003. By the way, the Giants were in the playoffs in three of those years and in 2001, they weren't eliminated from contention until the last series of the season.
Think next time before making such an ill informed, naive comment the next time you post about baseball.
