Glenn and Coyle; EOTB Out; Friday Notes

Vern Glenn got the weekend gig at PIX simply because he's better, much better than the person he's replacing. He has experience in this market, a good 20 years and change at the Van Ness corral plus he's funny and unique and will do a good job. Never cared for Coyle and apparently, I'm not the only one.

And for Vern, it has to be a huge sigh of relief to remove himself from the 800-lb. gorilla that often used him as his kick machine. Glenn would never admit it--but you bet it had to wear on him and, finally, he can now do his thing without the big face riding him.

*It's not 100% official, but word is that KPIX' ad-show maggie, "Eye on the Bay" is a goner.

*Let's not pile on KTVU for its gobble up of pool video the other night, Clearly it was not the right thing to do, but other stations have done it in the past and tempted, would probably do it in the future. Either case, "Special Ed" is hearing from all members of the TV news gulch.

  1. Radnich hasn't said a word of Vern's leaving. NO tears like Tom.
He probably figures more money for him..or he could be thinking why didn't Vern leave sooner and Raddy could then demand more..before he signed up for three more years at KRON.

  2. Craig Sklar was let go today at KRON as well after his contract wasn't renewed. That guy has been there forever although he never struck me as a dynamic addition to the news team. I guess KRON is making room for more underpaid interns to deliver news from a laptop camera.

  3. Hooray for Vern Glenn. He's a nice guy who deserves something like this. All things happen in time. Unfortunately for all of us, some things take more time than others. At least Vern was still drawing a check from KRON, even though he was getting screwed royally and having to work with that overpaid pompous blowhard RATsnitch. Better than being out on the street. Life deals us some weird hands...especially these days as those media conglomerates who overpaid for their properties make everyone else suffer. And let's not forget those who've been the victim of downsizing. A lot of good people in all fields are looking for work.

    1. "weird hands".....poor choice of words there, some people are becoming uncomfortable reading about the weird hand comments on this forum

  4. If Captain Claw Radnich did not mention the death of his colleague Pete Wilson, then why would we expect him to mention Vern Glenn jumping ship?

    1. How strange that nobody knew about his hand..until he outed himself. I wonder how much email now mention the hand?
A good reminder that if you ever become famous don't admit to being..oh,I don't know self conscience? ..about a body part. Or anything.

    2. Nobody knew about his hand because he always hides it on tv. Did he out himself on a segment of Gary's World?

  5. Didn't bringing in the reporters, producers and support staff onto the air originate at KNBR with Radnich? Is this an industry trend or what? Ralph and Tom almost never brought non-hosts on air. Radnich seemed to really elevate the junior people and let them be heard. I'm an outsider so I don't know how this stuff works.

  6. Is Craig Sklar related to Dick Sklar (RIP)?

With his puffy face and the redness, any chance Raddy hits the bottle?

  7. Sounds like KRON laid off several people yesterday, always a nice precursor to the holiday weekend. A couple of camera folks at least and also apparently the last graphics staffer left in the building. Good thing KRON has such tight, quality graphics already. For the dozen people still watching, get ready for even more Google Earth and stock photos downloaded from the web and shown on Microsoft Picture Viewer in stunning high-def.

  8. Vernon quickly learned that to be successful in this bay area, or any major city, you have to be yourself and not fake it.

So many sportscasters and newscasters have a 'sameness' or similarity that makes them 'cookie-cutter' and run-of-the-mill.
Whenever you see Vernon on the air, you know you're going to get something special. His upbeat, happy personality, and his love for sports, his willingness to do silly things that are funny on the air (Mr Involvement) and his good relationships and understanding of the athletes he's covered over the years have given him a solid reputation. He's creative, quick, funny and genuinely likes people, which in this profession is unfortunately sometimes a rarity.

Vernon is also very creative and spontaneous and knows how to ask the tough questions without putting the athlete or coach in an uncomfortable position.

Besides being a good friend to all of us who know him in the bay area media, Vernon Glenn is also a good man. I know he has a growing family with three active boys and a lovely wife who is quite busy with those kids, so like all of us, he needs to work.
I'm really glad for Vernon that he's going to be working at KPIX.

It's a much better fit for not only his talents, but for Channel Five as well. The less said about the other place where Vernon worked....the better. To his credit, I never once heard Vernon complain about KRON. He just kept pluggin' away for 20 years, giving them everything he had.

Now he's deservedly going to be rewarded. Nice going Vern, and good move KPIX. I know Dennis O'Donnell will also enjoy working with his longtime TV cohort.
