Flash: KFOG Morning Show Shown the Door; 'Webster and Irish Greg' Gonno; Cumulus Purge Continues

Irish Greg McQuaid

Bill WebsterFlash:

KFOG morning show has been shown the door. Webster & Irish Greg are no more. A new show starts after Memorial Day called "The Morning After." (Insert joke with that title).

I was never a big KFOG fan and when Dave Morey left, the handwriting was on the wall. He split before the eventual apocolypse. (You think he knew something?)

Yes, once again Cumulus continues its sytematic purge of Bay Area radio.

  1. the destruction of another once-proud local station continues. of course no one could ever fill morey's shoes, but the 'FOG morning show was still a very good team with greg, webster, peter and renee. cumulus blows.

    3. I hadn't heard the news and was shocked when I turned on KFOG this morning. Blows.......after MANY years of being a loyal morning show listener I now have to find a new station to wake up to.

    4. Sad day. I suspected something was happening, but I too could not believe my ears this morning. I've been listening to KFOG's morning show for well over 20 years and am not afraid of change, but it has to be for the better. I was sad when Morey left, but warmed up to Webster soon enough. He had better musical tastes in my opinion. But when I heard this neurotic dweeb describing his fear of "swallowing his toothbrush" this morning, I knew it was all over for me and KFOG. Bummer. Feels like the day KKCY "The City" was yanked back in '95 or so.

    5. Didn't realize line up change was happening but after just 10 min of listening I feel like I've landed on a Pop 10 AM radio show, its horrible, sounds like all the other horrible "morning drive" shows, the original was just that - an original. This is not the spirit of KFOG! You likely have lost a loyal 20 yr listener with this "new show".

    6. I will miss them that was the first and only radio program where I enjoyed listening to what they discussed. I like the familiar, and I do not understand why the dismissal, is it lack of ratings, revenue? Does anyone know why the decision to remove Webster and Irish Greg and make changes?

    7. I tuned in this morning as I have each morning for 15 years. Was convinced I was just being stupid when I could not find "them". Sadly I soon found out they were all gone and had been replaced by just more of the silly talk and talk and talk and talk...crap. I will give it a chance on Sunday morning and evening. If sunrise and sunset are gone then so too am I. So sad. So very sad. RIP KFOG.

    8. I could have stood the change of people given time, but the music was terrible. The music on the drive was so sleepy I had to change the station to stay awake. Plus, it was so out of touch with what I'm used to hearing on that station. I don't listen to 97.3 or 101 for a reason.

Time to just switch to my ipod for an alarm.

    9. I'm shocked and saddened - the KFOG morning crew have been part of my life for 20 years, and previous changes have been acceptable - but today, no music, just self serving drivel - and gratuitous music few and far between...time for another station.

    10. I couldn't believe my ears yesterday morning. Where was my morning team to get me thru my commute. They made my morning commute tolerable. I gave the newbies a shot and had to turn them off. The music and their conversations were lacking anything of interest. I gave it another try this morning. I'm in search of a new station. KFOG lost a 5 year fan.

    11. All the comments are touching my heart. I cannot believe how upset I am by the downgrade of KFOG replacing solid radio personalities who carry a history (at least in my lifetime) for "DJs" with no soul. Furthermore, I have followed Irish Greg since LIVE 105 not to mention Big Rick - and Dave Morey was a nice addition as I became a new KFOG listener 10+ years ago.

After reading all the comments, I realize what is happening has more significance on the intelligent Bay Area audience than I realized. Who, what, where and how are "they" thinking? I was miffed by the removal of Peter Finch and Renee to the afternoons, but I coped. NOw this ... with more sadness than I ever imagined KFOG is over for me. I am truly lost without these folks in the morning as I keep flipping around stations to find a good fit which seems to be non-existent. On the flipside, this week I learned that Sarah does not have a favorite sex position! OMG please spare me. That station lasted 10 minutes during my one hour commute. I guess I must turn my dial and back to what I will now reminisce about - KFOG intelligent radio that kept the Bay Area informed with a sense of community. I'm not sure how I'm going to get that out of Pandora, but I'm not willing to sacrifice stupidity for community. Finally, I wish the KFOG DJ's the best of luck to the ones gone and the ones left behind. Perhaps the corporate guys will eventually figure out their mistakes. In the meantime, ... I'm stationless!

    12. OMG, what has happened to KFOG? I am a long time listener (over 10 years) to "world class rock" but no more. It took me a few weeks to warm up to Webster, but I ended up really enjoying him. I do like Greg, but I am positive that there will be no warming up to this immature and imbecile morning crew, and I am now searching for another morning radio program. KFOG is either searching for a younger audience, or is atttempting to cut expenses. Well, it backfired here, because I will no longer be listening.

    13. Just woke up to KFOG after being on vacation. I actually thought that someone in my house had changed my radio setting as I didn't hear familiar voices. Then I heard Greg Gory and knew that something had gone horribly wrong on KFOG. I have been a foghead for over 10 years and have been listening to the morning show for almost 25 years. It was hard when Dave Morey left but I adjusted to Webster's style. Next to go was Peter, then Rene and now Webster and Irish Greg all in one shot! Well now it's time for me to go as well. Goodbye KFOG, thanks for the memories.

    14. I agree with all the dissenting votes before me. I've been listening and enjoying KFOG for many years. The morning show crew made my drive across the Bay Bridge bearable and even enjoyable. Now I feel that I'm being assaulted by brash immaturity and dull and uninteresting filler. I turned my radio off this morning and swore at cars instead.
Bring back Webster and Irish Greg!

    16. I'm nauseous. What is happening to the intelligence of Bay Area radio? I've been listening to KFOG since my mother told me they changed from her music to mine, back when M Dung was on in the morning. Couldn't take M, but the music was great! Then they put Dave on in the morning and it was the best thing to ever happen to radio. Been a loyal listener ever since, well, until now. I'm just sick.

      Delete
    17. Wow! Have you listened this morning? It sounds like Greg Gory is #1 and they have some other Greg on there. OK, so maybe it's not what we wanted, getting Irish Greg back, but it's far better than that Tony guy. Wow, that was the worst pick ever! I actually sent an email to Dennis Constantine and he tried to defend the choice of Tony, saying "give them some time." I gave them NO time. Dennis ruins the afternoons for me, too. I don't hold out much hope of recovery with him in the Program Director's seat, but at least one good move was made with giving Tony the boot. He'd be great on some other loud dumb morning show, but not a classic, classy, GREAT SF station like KFOG.

    7. Dung, Scoop, Dave, The Shue and the rest made a great station back in the day. They saved Bay Area radio after KSAN went Jesus, then KMEL went where ever they went after the Sex Pistols interview. Haven't listened for a few years now, but those were great times. 9. I enjoyed Dave Morey's KFOG's morning show back in the 90s. Then I got satellite radio.

Who suffers through the endless inane drivel and mattress commercials that broadcast radio has become?

We've got satellite. We've got iTunes. We've got our phones. And if nothing else, we've got NPR.

Not long ago, KFOGs typical listener was probably well-educated, affluent and loyal. A Foghead decal in the window suggested you were smart, had a social conscience and good taste to boot. Today, that KFOG decal is akin to an AOL email address.

    2. Yeah, the smugness of people who can afford to waste hundreds of dollars a year on satellite "radio" annoys me. I don't pay for radio. The majority of people don't and won't. iTunes blows, as well, charging ridiculous money. I also don't get where NPR fits in. Not much music on that and it's a lot old hippies on there. Too bad locally programmed free broadcast radio is being ruined.

So what's wrong with an AOL address. I have had it since it was $10 a month for 10 hours. CompuServe and Prodigy were about the only alternatives for internet access. Now AOL email is free and unlimitend. Should I be feeling socially stigmatized for never changing my email address?
I also have fond memories of KTIM the North Bay Noise and other "alternative radio" of the Bay Area. I guess if you live long enough, you become a person remembering and missing the good old days. I don't miss dial up and 56k though!

      Delete
    5. AOL is cool if you still use MySpace and Napster. lol. Nah, whatever floats your boat and works for you. And yes, I don't miss those modem dial up days at all. Remember when AOL use to turn off their service at 1am in the mid 1990s? Imagine the "internet" not being open 24 hours. That would be unheard of today.

    1. @5:12 pm: Dave Morey was the voice that came on the air at "Beautiful Music KFOG" at noon one sunny weekday back in 19-whatever and broke the new format. There's a recording of it out the somewhere; the elevator music stops, a brief news report is heard, the fog-horn blew, and then I think it was the Stray Cats "Rock This Town" that opened the noon hour; must have scared people in a thousand elevators. Followed by Dave introing the Beatles, "yay."

Dave had a long and storied career, which had peaked. As Rich suggests, I gather that he saw the writing on the wall; the playlist was restricted, and whomever was running things kept the KFOG DJs on a very short leash; they were mostly reduced to liner cards anyway. It couldn't have been much fun anymore. I bet Cummmulus didn't like the number of figures in his salary either. Dave took the hint and retired hisself, and more power to him. He left with his reputation and pride intact, and has been having a nice life from all accounts I've heard.

    2. Are you refering to Theo from the good ol' KMEL days? He is/was the Asian equivalent of James Earl Jones. Helluva deep voice for a Japanese guy. Must be hung like a horse...

    3. anon at 5:12...you sir, apparently have no taste. Dave Morey had the best pipes in radio combined with an incredibly deep knowledge of all kinds of music. His 10@10 shows were little works of art and the production he put into it was impeccable. No, he was no Dr Don but he also wasn't on a big Boss Jock station like KFRC. He was the perfect match for KFOG's aesthetic, hence his long shelf-life. The Bay Area misses him. But he chose to get out while still on top. Respect!

    4. Hey 5:12, go back to LA or Calgary or Up yer Bootystan cause you have no clue as to radio quality. Yer the type of moron who thought Don Sherwood a drunk, Jazzbeaux a purple people eater, and Tom Donohue a large man. Get the picture? Yer the type of masturbating mouth foamer that the new Cumulus bosses love. Why not go back to selling used shoes at the Flea Market? That appears to be YOUR area of soap scum expertise. Or better still, hit the upcoming County Fair circuit and show the masses how talented a double jointed in the hips and jaws sword swallower can make a living in this economy. Franchise opportunities available.

  22. Mmmm, I am going to say that there was an album side, or b-side play origin for me and KFOG- the 80's, you could always count on them playing that killer song that WASN'T the mainstay that all other stations had already killed- they kinda got it, musically for a while. There was a time that they WOULDN'T play the want-to-be Aerosmith of today (at all)- Now, ever-since the indie-niche they play, they suck. Peter Finch is the most pedestrian radio personality I have ever heard, slow and simple. Marilee or whatever her name is also gotta go- she drones on montonously endlessly. They should try a rock fusion format, what do they have to lose.....

    1. You miss the point of the mix of personalities on the Morning Show. Peter Finch was indeed the 'boyscout', dorky but loyal and lovable. The innocent foil in the more progressive dynamic of the others. You need the straight man to make good comedy.
I think you may be referring to Rosalie Howarth, who is no argument old school, but in a good way for those of us who don't like the more clownish, loutish dudes and chicks who are trying to be smarmy hipsters. She knows music history and btw was just inducted into the radio hall of fame. So she must have been doing something right...

  23. I've been a daily KFOG listener for 12 years, mostly the Morning Show. The Golden Years IMO were with Dave Morey, Peter Finch, Renee and Irish Greg. They did a lot of good charity and community support efforts as well as bring interesting guests on the show. Things changed when Dave, then Peter left. Too bad but that's life.
Now if only they would fire Dred Scott who stinks up the 7 to 12 night shift as the smarmiest dufus on the No Cal air then that would make up for it. Please, please leave!

I bet he left knowing it was going down hill. Now, Rosalie on the other hand is an excellent DJ. Wonderful voice, great knowledge and just relaxing on the weekends. M was funny for a while, but then became a dope. I thought Grapone (sp?) was decent. Anyway, XM radio is looking like the way to go now.

  26. I think Webster was a good choice to follow up when Dave Morey left, as Webster continued the tradition of a fairly low key, fairly grounded, but still enthusiastic guide to the music. I'm sorry to hear that he's been fired, and I dread the probable wannabe-gonzo replacement . . . .

  27. @6:04 I have NO idea how Dred Scott manages to remain on the air. I remember hearing him on KTIM and later KVRE in Santa Rosa. He sucked then and 3 decades later he still sucks. 33. Link 415 Media to sfgate & you net 43 comments in 6 hours. sfgate/Chron should alternate Liebermann with Fong-Torres to spice up BF-T's bland "Radio Waves". Regarding KFOG's demise, it's been a long time coming, & Cumulus is merely driving the stake through its heart. Dung & Scoop, indeed, created/programmed a wild irreverent morning show that was sheer fun to wake up to. Prior to M., Scoop & Lee Sims, who was fresh from Hawaii & always ready to Rock 'n Bowl, broadcast a damn listenable show. Before Big Rick, John Grappone (now weekends on Portland's KINK-FM) did a commendable job, and a-way back in the 80's, Sky Daniels & his Psychedelic Supper made the KFOG afternoon drive a colorful experience indeed. Back in the day, KFOG was truly worth listening to with on-air talent that reflected and respected San Francisco's place in psychedelic rock and roll music history. Remember the "Adventure Hour" every night? David Gans with live-Dead? Mark Naftalin with his Blue Monday show? Gilroy's KFAT lives on via the internet with rotating tapes of legendary air shifts from the '70's and '80's. Wouldn't it be nice if tapes of Dung, Sims, Scoop, Daniels, Grappone, Stewart et al also surfaced via the net to remind us of the excellence that once was KFOG?!

  34. was in trouble when they stopped playing ROCK . These cKFOG orporate oinkers pay ridiculous money to own these stations and then get all these so called experts to tell them what to do to gain audience share. Treat the DJ's like experts . Let them pick more of their music . And look for new bands and older bands that can still rock . Anybody know what happened to "David T" . He was a longtime jock at KTIM San Rafael and worked part time at KFOG years ago . Who cares about these slick "voices" who read a few liners and then turn it back over to the computer . Get off the tried and true, same old big tracks that have been played for millions of times .Bring creativity back .How about music sets . Whatever happened to the 6 or 8 minute per hour commercial loads? I pretty much gave up on music radio years ago . 36. I remember M Dung, Scoop and Kevin the Rat (I think that was where he started?) being one of the great morning shows back in the day. Dave Morey did mid-days. The dj's still picked the music and they had TASTE! It got more corporate as the years went on but I was still a fan of Dave and 10@10. The best mix was Dave, Peter Finch and Kim Wonderly (pre Rene) in the AM. Great chemistry! Now it's just musical chairs. The only reason to listen is Annalisa who I think should have been tapped to take the morning slot. She's smart, has great taste in music and has a way with words. I'm cringing that they may have already hired a bunch of out-of-towners to come in and young-it-up.

He was the one who happened to be on air at KFOG when the 89 quake hit . They had hooked up a generator and he stayed on for hours . I went to see him a few months later . He got me up to the studio so I could see it .I did a little small time radio at that time . He was a very supportive guy . 40. Now my 13 year old is right. "Mom your station is awful." KFOG has been in a steady decline followed by Dave Morey's departure. He could be annoying and sometimes arrogant, but he knew his stuff. Cumulus just wants button pushing robots. They now have an announcment regarding this on their home page signed by Dennis Constantine. Why do I think the is just taking the hit for a decision made by some other suit? Ironically, Renee now hosts the afternoon drive time with him....

  49. I agree with 5/11 5:07. But I am this close to saying goodbye to KFOG. Only because I met Renee at an SF charity walk several years ago am I listening as well as the impressive voices of Annalisa & Rosalie. My Bikram yoga instructor cousin listens to Pandora now, and I am definitely considering that option. My budget is all that keeps me from it. Don't know how Giant CEO Larry Baer put up with Tricky Dickey that day at AT&T a month ago.

  50. KFOG really had become almost unbearable and this is the last straw. Surprised to hear Dred Scott's been in radio so long. SO BAD. Very long time listener here. Any freeform internet radio out there with good editorial DJs? Radio Paradise kinda bland. No personality. Truly miss KSAN, KTIM, KFAT.

  51. KFOG listener of 10+ years, but the music has been on such a drastic decline, it's become unlistenable. The only reason I stuck around was for the morning show. That's gone now, too? Cumulus, what have you done?! Love Renee, Rosalie and Annalisa, but this morning show change is the end of the road for me. Hopefully those three ladies are shopping their resumes around -- they can do so much better than the swill KFOG is offering up these days. And, speaking of swill, Dred Scott...? Ugh!

    1. I have listened to KFOG since about 1985-86. It was a big hit when Dave Morey left, but enough of the "family" still remained and KFOG still retained its local character and connection to Fogheads, that it was okay. Webster was not Dave, but he grew on me in his own way. However, I agree with every complaint that has been listed in these comments from longtime Fogheads. I hate to see Cumulus destroy what has been such a SF fixture for decades. I have to laugh at the comments regarding Dred Scott ("Hey! I'm Dred of the Night...I'm an idiot!!"...ugh!). I was afraid I was the only one who he grates on.

  52. Steve Harvey's nationally syndicated show is entertaining but I'm not convinced it's a better replacement for the local "Kevin Brown in the Morning". It's unfortunate what's happening to Bay Area radio.

  53. I'm a big fan of Radio Paradise and have been listening to it for years, switching to KFOG only for 10at10. I had my doubts about Annalisa taking over 10at10, but she did a great job. However, management appears to have been regulating what appears there too, so it's frustrating. Mostly I switch between RadioParadise and KPIG, which is just the sort of local, DJ-programmed station you're looking for, though you have to pay for internet subscription if you're not in central coast area. It's worth $5 a month, for sure.

    2. It's internet radio at www.radioparadise.com. Very eclectic. And they aren't claiming their station is paradise; that's the city that the DJ/programmer and his wife/music director live in. It's the brainchild of Bill Goldsmith who used to work for KFAT and KPIG after that. Highly recommended!

  54. This is truly the end of radio as we knew it in the bay area. I moved here in 1985 from NY where I grew up with WNEW- Dennis Elsis(?), Scott Muni on serious album rock radio and when I found KFOG in the first couple of days here it has been dialed in since. But no more, definitely noticed much more programmed play lists and gimmicks in the last few years but now it's really done. I love the odd ball stuff on KPIG like a college station with old people!

  55. Where to go now? As usual I find these things out way after the fact. I miss Dave, but when Peter and then Renee left so close together I began to feel something was up. I will miss Irish Greg too. I listened to KFOG with these four for longer than any station since Frank Dill was on KNBR. Cumulus is just another corporate conglomerate that does not care about my demographic (over 50). Very sad.

  56. That's that...I am officially finished with KFOG and all other broadcast radio. It's amusing that Dennis Constantine keeps himself on the air and is getting rid of anyone with any talent...seriously, he sounds like a befuddled grandfather. He can't possibly be thinking he's appealing to a younger demographic. Good luck Rosalie and Annalisa and Renee! I feel sorry for you.

    1. After 15 years of loyal listening (streaming from Florida for the past three years, because I simply can't stand constantly listening to local favorites Jim Croce and Jimmy Buffet), I'm finished as well, however, I did tune in to their current A to Z marathon, in what I had expected to be a fond rememberance of the way things once were, but, which instead, became the icing on the cake. First they totally blew past Alice's Restaurant, is if that somehow is no longer in their "extensive playlist. A short time later they blew past American Pie, and the music died a second time. The final indignity was cutting off the final 20 seconds or so of Hey Jude - something Dave Morey would never, ever do.
My only disagreement with you is with Annalisa. Frankly, I get annoyed when she reminds me every 10 minutes or so that she's "inside my radio." I also get annoyed when she plays obscure 10 @ 10 songs from years likely before she was born that I never recall having heard. IMHO, she should be the next to be shown the door, not that I'll be tuned in when that happens.

  61. Dennis Constantine is an idiot by the way. When I saw the web page with him signing the death notice of the Morning Show as the "Program Director" , it became clear to me why the programming on KFOG is now in the mud.

KFOG had a good run. I guess it is time to fully turn to the Internet.

It is too bad, because I think there is a place for good local radio but monied, commercial, capitalist pig interests like Cumulus will never get what that really mean.

  62. I've been listening to KFOG since I moved here from Chicago in 1988. It was a great station with wonderful talent like Dave Morey. It has been dying a slow death and the sale to Cumulus was the final nail in the coffin. Its such a shame! No local expertise and all corporate computer programming has killed the last good station. I remember how Dave made me feel @ home listening when I first got here. They sponsored great events and even had great give aways. I won a trip to Hawaii on one of their World Class Adventures. I am done with KFOG for good now and its s very sad day. I am grateful for getting the chance to hear quality free radio before it was killed off by Corp America. When will we realize not all change is for the better?

  67. Listening to KFOG since 1989 and while the music has been getting progressively worse over the past few years, I hung in there. The addition of Greg Gorey was almost the last straw but now they've completely killed the Morning Show. Goodbye KFOG.

  69. I've enjoyed KFOG for years. I loved Dave Morey's beautiful voice. I adapted when he left, and gave Webster a chance. I learned to like him, and appreciated what he added to the morning show. I loved hearing about Irish Greg's cycling, and his partner Samantha. I cringed when Renee moved to afternoons, but survived that, too. I missed Big Rick when he departed. I hoped that Peter Finch would be a great addition to the news at KGO, but missed it when he left, too. In the background, I kept hearing, "...a cumulus station..." and knew that the beloved local station was going to meet its doom. I listened to the new additions this morning, and could not stand the nasal whining for more than 10 minutes. I changed the channel. I won't be back.

  70. Caught part of the new morning show today. I can only say I hope it gets better. I've stayed faithful to KFOG since the M Dung days. Was broken hearted when the silver throated Dave Morey left, but hung in with Renee, Greg and Webster, who I came to really like. The comments made by the new guy this morning, i.e., "Are you a Terrorist?" were inane. I miss Peter, Renee, and Irish Greg. So long KFOG. It's been a great ride.

  71. I am SO saddened and shocked by this. I tried to give it a second chance on my drive in to work today. I had to change the station. The banter is juvenile and not relevant as it has been for the 18 years I have lived in the Bay are and listened to KFOG. KFOG now sounds like every other station that I will NOT listen to.

  73. When they sold out to Cumulus I wondered if that was why Dave Morey left. When they switched the morning show, I knew that was the reason Dave Morey left! They have completely ruined this channel and it started when they cancelled KaBoom without even telling the public. I really wasn't a fan of Webster but Irish Greg was awesome. This is a real shame. KFOG is now just like all the other obnoxious stations. Shame on you!

  78. I am so sad to lose my morning friends. I always felt comfortable and relaxed listening to an intelligent dialogue and acceptance for disagreement. People who understood the Bay Area and its diversity. This new show makes me cringe expecting to be hit with negativism and lack of substance with its potty/juvenile humor. What happened to factual informative opinions verses this seemingly uninformed defensive personal opinion silly show? It makes me unhappy in the morning, so I will avoid listening and switch the dial.

  79. I was introduced to KFOG in 2005 via streaming online from Houston, TX. The format was a little liberal for me but I grew to appreciate the morning crew. I was crushed when Dave left but still hung in there with the rest of the crew. Little by little everyone was being moved or replaced. KFOG morning crew made this conservative more socially aware. Like many others KFOG listeners, I gave the new crew a chance but I will be signing off. Best of luck KFOG listeners.

  81. I listened to KFOG from Day 1. The gear shift from KBAY roots classical to the SF form of album rock was a bright light after the demise of the old KSAN, spawned of the original Tom Donahue experiment at KMPX. KMEL was pretty and almost over-polished as was KRQR. Even the run of KOME and KSJO wasn't quite the same type of insight but were appreciated around the local dial. KFOG outlasted these as the "local", It's had a good run but the slippery downhill slope toward airwave mediocrity runs faster as it was sold to the corporate stooges with their money grubbing mentality. Couldn't believe the leap off the cliff with the present morning show pablum. Yeowch. What an insult to even marginally thoughtful former listeners. I erased both presets on my radio. What station will rise from these ashes to fill the gap? I'm on an NPR detox diet or I'll have to take the Way-long route to work to loop out into range of KPIG or KRVR. Can their transmitters be punched up to reach the middle earth?

  82. Gave it a week. Melanie seems to stumble over her words and frankly just isn't interesting. Tony is like the filling of a bean bag. Lots of filler, lots of air, nothing of substance. Just wondering if Dennis even KNEW who Tony Longo was before he hired him? The dirt people have dug up on "Twitch" is just incredible.

  90. I never really got over the loss of Dave Morey and the rest of the morning show group -- I remember some band, don't recall who it was, telling them how great it was to perform on the KFOG morning show, because most AM radio hosts are "totally annoying and probably tweaking on meth." Well, nice work Cumulus. Now KFOG too has a meth-tweaker AM show. You've driven me over to NPR -- of course the music sucks, but at least I don't have to hear inane drivel from some idiot loudmouth.
