Props to KRON and KGO-TV, in particular, for their coverage of the Oakland college massacre on Monday.
While other stations provided simple updates, both Channel 7 and KRON broke out of regularly-scheduled programming and stayed with the on-going story taking place in Oakland. Good news judgement.
The gravity of the situation has been evident in the national coverage of the tragedy and the fallout. It was, therefore, the right call for both KGO and KRON to have massive team coverage during the events and a good three days after. And while I'm a frequent critic of the over-use of helicopters, in this instance, the overview shots of the events in Oakland warranted the chopper usage.
Especially spot-on props to Channel 4's Catherine Heenan and KGO's Eric Thomas. Both showed a great deal of much-needed calm in an otherwise chaotic and especially terrible situation. The calm demeanor in the face of such immense tragedy displayed by both veteran anchors was welcome.
And for some terrific on-the-scene reporting, KRON's Da Lin; right smack in the middle of it all, gets a proper thumbs up.

No mention of Ktvu I see. Tara Morioriry was just awful. How is it that the once mighty news orginization would hire her? What are they doing over there? I hear the photogs dread working with her. The Ktvu downfall is nearly complete.
ReplyDeleteKRON did a good job? Too bad no one was watching.
ReplyDeleteKGO's gruesome shots from the helicopter were over the top ... live shots of dead bodies being stacked neatly in a row ... someone should have shown some discretion in the control booth.
ReplyDeleteI was driving and turned on the radio to KGO-the new local news channel. What I heard was Ronn Owens talking about the woman who had her daughter dieting. I was so glad that they didn't interrupt that for important breaking local news!
ReplyDeleteWow I'm surprised no one mentioned that guy Stanley Roberts from KRON 4 he did a phone report that had some interesting eyewitness facts that blew me away!
ReplyDeleteDa Lin us a BEAST of a reporter! Of course he was right there giving great reports.
