Talkers 'Heavy-Hundred'

Talkers Magazine, the trade that used to posses a lot more industry cred, but is nevertheless respected in the broadcasting world, offered their version of the "Heavy Hundred."

It's an interesting read.

  1. What was it-80% conservatives?..88%? Not a single Latino or Asian. Not one.
I know-I could be filthy Rich if I was right wing..I know the formula Rich. Throw all the blacks in jail I will scream, send all the wetbacks back to Mexico, and the homeless and elderly(Grandma?-screw her!) who cause 99% of our taxes? Send those bums to church charitys.
Then, salute the military, sing God Bless America.
Repeat that and watch the money flow in..fame.

    1. Don't forget the name calling. To be a successful right wing talk show host, you have come up with an insulting name for any caller that disagrees with you, rather than engage in any kind of serious debate.

  2. 80% of TR is conservative what do you expect 90% of TR is corporate owend. Take KGO the only reason it went NEWS is becouse Cumules is a conservative company. Think about the lib stations green 960 you think in lib SF They would do better in the ratings. truth is talk radio is not a liberal thing.

  3. I remember Leslie Marshall who first did a conservative persona..then a liberal persona..then claimed her mother was dead..then brought her mother on the radio...nuff said.

  4. Rich, Hard to give much credibility to this list once you get past the top 4. What's the metric to used to determine "heavy"? In the past, the list focused primarily on largest cume audience. If that was the case, you re-do the list, the Top 4 (Rush, Sean, Glenn & Savage) stay right where they are, but some of the others will ascend (Noory, Komando, Humphries) based soley upon size of listenership.

  5. And we, the sheeple, wonder why KGOne has gone down the proverbial tubes?

Way to go, Ronn Owens ... Mr. #54 on the list, based on the station being at that time in the top 10 of US talkers. #54 is like being out of the Top 40. He's toast. I remember when this magazine pushed Ronn as a top 10 host not too many years ago. Thank you Mr. Harrison ... nice interview with Ms. Craft the other day on KSCO. She didn't make the list either. And we wonder why lib talk is so misrepresented. Craft is good. Thurston, a no show as well. Karel, a no show. Gross, Rothman, Ray T -- all no shows. Wattenburg, too. Not even listed. Yest, we wonder.

Mr. Burns -- I remember well sending him a note when he was #23 just two or three years ago. And still have the nice note back from him. A dear man and a friend to many of us. One of the greats and not "below the line" as listed in "The Bible of Talk Radio."

I did note, however, several Clear Channel syndicated voices: Tom Sullivan, Armstrong & Getty (100)), Stephanie Miller (21), Hartmann (8) Randi Rhodes (41), Alan Colmes (15) Schultz (9) -- all who "made the list." Even John & Jeff did.

Even Kim Komando on KSFO made the list at #39.

No Bill Press. No Enid Goldstein. Hell, even Dough McIntyre on Cumulus' KABC made the list (74).

Six out of 100. (Not counting Komando). Even give 10 personalities out of 100 and you have 10%. Not a good standing.

    And yet, we wonder.

Lib talk isn't working. Not with this crowd. Or those from KGOne either.

And despite Rich's ass kissing love for Savage -- #4, not #2.

One good thing -- Montemayor and Jared Hart didn't make the list.

The libs talk the talk ... but just can't entertain enough to walk the walk to success. 10%. And yet, many have egos the size of 100.

Some not as good as they think they are, apparently. And a lot of morons buying into syndicated talk. No wonder Rush runs to the bank everyday with a shitty grin.

    Some schtick.

And why does radio feel committed to hiring "stand up comics" to do politically based talk shows?

Karel heard through his producer, Brian, live on his little webcast on KGO while in a spot break last night that Jared said this week that "Karel is top-tier talent in stations with 3 call letters." Karel responded -- "I've been on three call letter stations for 20 years. KFI, KGO ... and fired from both of them. It's about time they realized how good I really am."

And now, back to the "All Night Trucker's Fun Show" on KGO.

  6. @1:14PM I'll make note you're not a Heavy 100 fan. LOL
They have to update this list. #17 Lou Dobbs doesn't have a show anymore.
I see Rush is #1. He's the heaviest, in more than one way.

  7. Sure, talk radio is 80% conservative... b/c 90% of newspapers and TV stations are progressive / liberal.

    1. that isnt the way entertainment works...either it sells or it doesnt

conservative talk radio was shoved down the public's throat, causing the masses to shut it off...look at the numbers

but keep spewing the same old talking points we all have heard for the past 20 years...they dont fly anymore

  10. I don't listen to Rush for more than 5 minutes, he is too predictible, like all liberals are miserable, can't have fun. I'm a liberal and I love to have fun, one of my best friends for 25 years (male platonic) is ultra conservative (likes Rush and Michael , Savage) and we always have fun together. Sean Hannity I guess is media savy, however I don't think he come of as real intelligent. I grew up in one of the scandinavien countries, and when he talks about socialism and Europe he is very ignorent, and I guess so are his callers. I don't get Mark Levin, terrible voice, terrible manners, cannot tolerate another opinion.
Michael Savage can be entertaining, but infuriating as well, although I do think he is smarter than Mark Levin and Sean Hannity.
Glenn Beck way out there, paranoia, doom and gloom, liberal, conservative, who wants to listen to that. We use to get Mark Davis here in the Bay Area and I liked him, although I don't agree with him, but he had an independent streak. Also like Tom Sullivan, he can draw his callers out, and is nice to everyone. It is easier to like someone you agree with so it is no surprise I like Bill Press, Randy Rhoades, Alan Colmes and Thom Hartman, and yes, I still like Ronn Owens, even though he is not as good as he use to be. Like Armstrong and Getty, not Stephanie Miller, agree with her, but don't like her format. Laura Ingram is meanspirited, use to listen to Dr. Laura, often gave good advice, but also bad many times, entertaining most of the time. I like Dave Ramsey, mostly because he as a lot of common sense, he is tough, but compassionate, and I like his down to earth southern way of expressing himself, and I don't believe he takes himself too seriously. I'm afraid too many people in this country just want to have their own views re-inforced, I rarely hear anything on Sean Hannity that makes me think, he is so transparent in his contempt for Obama.
Calling him the anoited one, yet when Bush was President he would have a fit if a caller was disrespectful to him. I think Cumulus are going to try to appeal to the lowest denominator, instead of catering to the many former KGO listeners, who wants real debate, and hosts like John Rothman and Gene Burns, who can challenge us and make us think. Never cared for Ray Talifaro, only when he talked jazz and blues, too predictible as well, Bernie Ward was a mixed bag, infuriating on Israel, (I lived in Israel for a short time) could be funny, but was not big on anyone disagreeing with him. Just my 2 cents worth, miss Gene don't always agree with him, but he could present an issue like no one else, hope John Rothman gets a steady show in this area

    1. Is she still broadcasting out of NY? What's the point of having a nonsyndicated talker on SF radio who has never even lived here? I don't get it.

    2. they are doing it with geraldo in la....he does his syndicated show, then does 2 hours for los angeles...out of ny

they dont believe that local means anything and that their hosts can get all their info from papers and the net

now stern was screaming this 30 years ago...but he meant entertainment and he meant covering general topics....never meant that a local show would work with the host pretending to be there and to care....im sure he would view this as just another attempt to rip off the audience

  12. Two lefties in the top 10. Don't know if that's happened before.

Rome is #36 Top sports talker.

Amazing looking at that list; Suspended, fined, indicted, sued, charged but not convicted, convicted, suspended, fined, served time, pardoned, boycotted...

  13. the list is bs, and talkers mag has been on the take for years

if one is syndicated and is either not heard nor gets any ratings in the number 2 market in the country....you arent a heavy hitter

and mark levine shouldnt even be in radio

and sorry boys and girls...but he may no longer be on terrestrial radio, but the most influential force in radio is still stern

do your local dj or talk host chat it up with the news guy/gal and/or the traffic person? they didnt before stern did

is the news gal now listed as co-host? never wouldve happened before stern

does the talent spend time talking about their private life? bring family members onto the show? didnt happen before stern

syndication for morning shows? didnt happen till after stern proved that it could work

did limbaugh open the flood gates to conservative talkers who are really republican party shills? absolutely....but that is all he did

dont like most of the liberal talkers who are on the top of this list....and that includes rhodes....dont like someone who has changed their name, lied as a local host, and frequently lies on her syndicated show...for example, few years back, randi insisted that she had gotten a request to become a part of the local draft board...prob is, she was the only one to tell this story...an attempt to send fear into her listeners that because of iraq bush was going to reinstitute the draft

and please...the only talent on this list who shows courage and uniqueness is hendry....there isnt anything like him anywhere in the country...his show is brilliant

and take elder off the list...sold his soul to the republican party to get a syndicated gig that failed...he is so boring and predictable, that even the local black community has stopped monitoring his show

  14. This is off the topic, so I'll make it brief: one personality mentioned quite often here is Charles Karel Bouley. I for one know him not only from KGO, or at KFI ca. 1999-2000, but also his mostly forgotten stint at LA's CBS all-news (or, then, mostly news) KNX 1070, I'll say 2005-6. He did entertainment reviews and a weekend movie wrap. Apparently he wasn't such a lightning rod then.

  15. How must it feel to be Mr. Owens, once thinking he was big enough for syndication, to be looking up seven spots to Bubba the Love Sponge.

Take it as a sign from God, Ronnnnn. Time to go.

  16. BREAKING - Rush Limbaugh syndicator suspends national ads for two weeks.

"Radio-Info.com http://www.radio-info.com/news/rush-syndicator-tells-newstalk-affiliates-not-to-run-its-barter-spots-for-2 that Premiere Networks, which syndicates the Rush Limbaugh show, told its affiliate radio stations that they are suspending national advertising for two weeks. Rush Limbaugh is normally provided to afflilates for free in return for running several minutes of national advertisements provided by Premiere each hour. These ads called “barter spots.” These spots are how Premiere makes its money off of Rush Limbaugh and other shows it syndicates."
