KGO Notes; Saturday short; PIX and KTVU have solid February Sweeps; KNBR's Krueger; Entercom to 95.7: Play Ball or Else

How can they not know what good talk radio sounds like?

A KGO talk-host, (who I shall not name because the person has a professional life) asks me the question, for which I answered they, (Cumulus), don't give a damn. Surely now, after three months of this most dysfunctional of moves ever made in the radio biz, they still don't get it. It's as if they just piled a good heap of crap and hoped it would stick.

They summarily threw some of the most dedicated listeners under the bus and now are just limping along.

*Jennifer Jones-Lee showed up on the new weekend "Morning News" on Saturday with Jeffrey Schaub, (who I like and who is a seasoned pro); Jones-Lee, the normal weekday AM news co-anchor with Jon Bristow took a few extended days off this past week, (the most capable Jenna Lane subbed)--I don't know if Paul Hosely, (ND) is experimenting, but Lane would be a more polished pick in my book. Jones-Lee on Saturday sounded a lot less giggly and more in tune. Maybe a change would be in order. (Note: Jones-Lee was filling in for the under-the-weather, Kristain Haynes).

*NOTES: Big winners in the February sweeps: KPIX and KTVU...Meanwhile, ex-Channel 2 boss, Kevin O'Brien, (KOB), had a powerful SF lawyer fire back at a Detroit TV station that dumped O'Brien. Seems to me that KOB might have a case here...So, the Larry Kruger character got a "big two-year deal", eh? Maybe he can buy some some Ameci's pizza for the board ops and producers...I've finally figured it out: Bob Fitzgerald must have pictures...KCBS' Dave Padilla silly "Rise and Shine" almost as irritating as Jones-Lee: "It's Friday!"...Add Krueger: it's not so much Krueger sold his soul, (which consists of essentially kissing the ass of the old guy till he departs--it's that Kruger has become so obviously tame and mindful of his professional duties, (Larry Baer is listening, Larry)--he's about as edgy as a '7Live" studio audience...There's a reason why only one Bay Area writer talks to Fitz--they, (the writers), can't stand him either...Entercom to 95.7 FM sports missives: Either perform this year and get decent traction, (ratings) or begin to update your resume. (Psst, NOBODY's LISTENING)!

  1. No I don't think they care, or is even trying to make the station a success. It seems to me that the week-end schedule is a mess, now they have a cooking saturday afternoon, guess they were scared of going up against Joel Riddell on 910, who is doing"Dining around" for Gene Burns.
Anyway I can't make sense of the week-end schedule, is Pat Thurston on the same time slots as she was last week-end? Don't remember, is Christine Kraft a guest host or what? Is Stacy Taylor in or out, is he okay as a guest host, but not as a regular host? Confusing to say the least. Meanwhile 910 seem to do many things right, such as airing the "Dining around with Gene Burns" in the same time slot as he had on KGO, people are creatures of habits, so it goes to reason that his fans from KGO could easily switch to 910. Even the fill in schedule for the Gene Burns show 4 to 7 p.m. now have fairly set schedule. I now know that Monday and tuesday is John Rothman, wed-thursday Gil Gross and Friday Ed and Rosie, makes is easy to remember. John Rothman is my favorite, and if possible I will schedule my day around his show as much as possible, I suspect I'm not the only on. that is how you get devoted listeners to your radio station, and I'm just an outside observer of the radio business.

  2. On the BASG blog,it was posted about Kruegers contract. BASG said that on air Krueger admitted that in 2005 "I was the cause of my own demise"...and that should end Radnich's bullshit and lies and blaming of Alou. Now Raddy doesnt have to tap dance avoiding the mentioning of Bob Agnew,Salvatore and the rest of the then gang of KNBR idiots in charge.
And Krueger finally admits I was right.

  3. Has anyone considered the possibility that the politically-conservative Dickey brothers are intentionally deep-sixing KGone as a means of giving the finger to the Bay Area's nationally known liberal/progressive political leanings? Sure, it would be an expensive means of flipping the bird at the Bay Area, but these creeps are rich enough that they can afford to do it.

They come in, they buy out a voice for the Bay Area's liberal/progressive community, and then they give us all the finger by purposely muting that voice. Then later on, they resurrect the station in some new politically conservative identity. I wouldn't put it past them.

    Just a thought.

  4. They didnot fire Ralph blowhole, but the two most dislike lack of talents on KNBR is Fatnich and Shitz, and they are still on.

  5. Stop bashing KNBR...they've got some great talent...from Bob Fitzgerald to Pauley Mac and Kate Scott. We are lucky to have these treasured broadcasters in the bay area. They are all very credible and entertaining, and KNBR is as good a station at it ever has been.

Those of you who complain about'the good old days,' ought to go drink your medemucal and go play some bingo at the old folks home.
It's not your world anymore! We have a lot of energetic, bright young people on our radio stations now who are better than ever!
Stop complaining and begin to appreciate that radio is now in a truly new Golden Age. Thanks to people with creativity and foresight like the Dickeys, radio is headed for some special times in the years to come.

    1. to 11:10am lol sarcasm at its finest

the only thing worth listening to on KNBR is the Giants game,
and KNBR messes that up with constant and repetitive promos
that almost make the game unlistenable. KNBR the s**t leader.

    1. Tolbert is annoying, can't ask a question under 10 minutes or 1000 words but he knows his sports, compared to Ralph, who knows about the same as a common man off the streets.

  8. You mean you don't like 'The Sports leader?' What are you...a communist? Remember the good old days when Rush Limbaugh was on KNBR, and we could hear him pontificate and mesh with his beloved 'ditto-heads.' Radio at it's finest!

    1. "LOL" is an acronym that means "Laughing Out Loud," as if to say "this is hilarious." IIRC (if I recall correctly) it was used to designate "little old lady." These type of shortcuts, IMHO (In my humble opinion), can get a little out of hand. AAMOF (as a matter of fact) some of us are starting to think about the effects of being AATK (always at the keyboard), to the extent that we should start, as you indicate, trying to revisit utilizing the real and complete language instead of using these foolish abbreviations, which ABCD (any bozo can do).

  10. I like KPIX, always have, perhaps in part because Channel 5's news was ingrained in me because I remember it being on the family TV back in the days of John Weston, Wanda Ramey and Van Amburg. Glad to see it do well in February sweeps, although no doubt it owes some of its ratings success to CBS' strong prime-time network programming. (Los Angeles' KCBS, which pulled off a rare sweeps win, and other affilitates, should, like PIX, be thankful for NCIS, CSI The Good Wife, 2 1/2 Men, etc.)

  11. Question: Does anyone outside of a few lonely A's fans and the occasional curiosity seeker ever listen to 'The Game?'

I have tried but most of their shows are pretty bland, boring and sound like a bunch of pasty faced dough-boys who sit around and trade opinions about sports like a bunch of college kids. Good radio?
The ratings pretty much don't lie.

I actually feel sorry for poor Chris Townsend, who has to do all of those post game A's shows again this year.

If they ever hope to maked a dent in KNBR"s ratings, they need to get a few more pro sports teams on their air besides the A's.
With the exception of the late 1970s when they set a record for the smallest attendance i nthe east bay, the A's have never been more
irrelevant. No one listens to them, no one shows us to watch them play, no one cares!

  12. I think there's plenty of talent at KNBR. I've been listening to the station and enjoying it for years... Murph is good. Radnich is Radnich. I listen to him off and on... and when he's good, he's very good. Doesn't follow sports as much as he should, but he still is a crack up. Krueger is excellent. Glad he's back. Looking forward to the day (like everyone else) they dump Fitz from the station (including the Warrior games). Rod Brooks is pretty good... cut him some slack: he's got to work w/ Fitz. Ralph and Tom and still excellent. VERY entertaining duo. (not crazy about their solo shows, though). Like Marty Lurie on the weekends. Not bad at all. Too many people spend WAY too much time whining.
