SF Radio Ratings; KGOne? 'Tanks' for the Memories; KCBS solidifies; KQED #1

KGOne, officially in the tank. (Must be a helluva wake at 55 Hawthorne--Nice cume).

This is the textbook: how to royally screw up a radio station and drive it in the ground.

KCBS is happy. KQED is euphoric, (congrats)

The numbers are here

  1. How very sad.

Any leftover sales crew must be depressed.

  2. Really sad, though I'm actually surprised that the most recent stats aren't even worse ~ surprised that there are so many people still listening, as it's just dreadful.

    1. The only reason I'm not surprised that there are SOME people listening is that they have the absolute best signal so sometimes out of desperation, even I tune in. Actually another reason for some listenership is some interesting people such as Ronn (though don't always like his topics), Lynn Jimenez (no one beats her on money issues), Michael Finney (great consumer info, but he gets a lousy placement on the schedule), Brent Walters (always interesting and I'm not religious) and Jon Hamilton (useful info). Maybe since KGO fires all the expensive talent and their overhead is greatly reduced, they don't mind low ratings. That's probably not true.

  3. We'll really see over the next several months. I like that KKSF 910 added about 70,000 listeners in one month.

Very sad re KGOne but I thought it would have been lower.

    1. KKSf 910 made a few changes (getting Len and Gene Burns, and when Burns got sick, they used quality guest hosts) and added 70,000 listeners in one month, that should and probably does tell them that if they continue to add quality hosts and advertise they will continue to add listeners, thus added revenue. Call, e-mail or twitter them and let them know we like the change.

  4. How do they come up with the ratings? I'm surprised that their raitings aren't lower...? Who participates in the ratings? Do they only ask 20 somethings?

  5. Nice to see 95.7 The Game pick up 34,000 listeners in January. Slowly, but steadily, station is gaining traction.

  6. Soon, they will be more meaningless than The Melanie Morgan and Brian Sussman Effect, also known as The Dumbing Down of Conservative Thought. Yes, I know, Rich, you think Ms. Morgan is a nice lady. Have you listened to her? Hateful is more like it. Sorry, deeds not words.

By the way, for all of you bellyaching about the irrelevance of KNBR, and I can't listen to that new FM sports station because of all the Kaiser ads that feature the witch's voice, listen to Sirius NFL. They are pros. KNBR is grade school. Pony up the $15 a month or whatever it costs, buy a radio and receiver and listen to it. You'll never, ever go back to KNBR. After all, Sirius simulcasts KNBR's game broadcasts for the 49ers. You'll never tune in to the station known for its childishness and arrogance.

  7. I was about to ask, how The Game's numbers are compare with previous months. Good to see them move up. While KNBR's numbers are not what they use to be, #8 isn't that bad.

But yes, look at that drop off for KGO between Dec. and Jan. I don't even tune in to hear the "car wreck". KGO-free since the first week of December.

  8. Yes, it's bad news for KGO, but the trajectory was set long before the blowup. Go back a few years and read through the ratings. You'll see their cume shrinking...and shrinking...and shrinking.

    3. The ratings may have been shrinking, but I believe it would have stabilized up or down a couple notches if they had done a couple tweaks. Instead they brought in the demolition team and now only the facts that they have a great signal and a few good things left to listen to will keep some people listening. However, in general ,the news and the programming is lousy.

  9. The numbers really confuse me? KGO said research indicated their audience wanted more news. That being said I thought their numbers would increase. Is the new up down? They would not have misread their research would they?

  10. Numbers that bad for a signal like that? Got to be some kind of record for lowest listener to watt ratio. I'd love to see the day parts. I wonder if they'll stand by the "this is what the listeners want" BS.

  11. I have never been a news junkie, always a talk junkie, but whenever I listened to KGO news in the past I thought they did a good job, and liked the reporters. Yesterday I listen from 1:30 to 2:15 pm. This is what I heard: announcement of the news every minute, unless they had a story that were longer. Updates from ABC at least twice. A 5 minute story about Mardi Gras and the history of Mardi Gras beans. A story about a Japanese scientist who supposely have discovered a gene that makes it less painful for some people to loose money, thus making it more likely same people will become gamblers. Did they do that story to make Cumulus management feel better? Then 2 stories about fires, one in Benicia which impacted traffic so it had some relevence, then a story about a fire in a garage in Hayward, which involved a couple to turtles, I live on the Peninsula, do I care about a fire in a garage in Hayward, even if a couple of turtles was involved? No, I could only stay tuned long enough to learn that the turtles was okay, wish I could say the same for KGO.

    1. The nice thing is that when I used to listen to KGO talk shows and there was "breaking news," they would cut in when it was important. So I never felt like I was missing out on crucial news, and got the best of both worlds!

Haven't listened to KGO in 3 months. From what I read here and elsewhere, I am not missing a thing!

    2. No, I'm sure you are not, I posted the comments about the turtles etc. thought I would at least try to listen the the new news station, it was worse than I thought, perhaps in the many hours of news they have something of interest, but who is going to stay tuned and wait for that when the can't capture your attention in 45 minutes, hardly anyone, since there are several other choices. I keep writing them, telling them what I think, I doubt they care, hopefully it annoys them, and of course then there are the rating,I'm sure they care about that, since that means money. Oh, I forgot perhaps Cumulus have the gene that makes it less painful for them to loose money, frankly I hope not, they ruined a great station it should be painfull. Whatever I do, eat, drink, watch or listen to I'm partial to quality. Good movies, with good actors, good food, nice wine, and a quality radio station whether it be news or talk. I think I know the Bay Area well enough to say I think majorty of the population here feel the same
way. Perhaps a little market research of what people want would have been in order.

  12. It would be great if there was radio station out there that focuses on local news that would feature a story on the latest Arbitron Ratings. By the looks of the amount of comments here there is interest. Hmmm what station focuses on local news?
