The New KGOne Weekend Plan

Starting next weekend -- another change in the KGOne Wing of Cumulitis ...

The long-running weekend travel show with John Hamilton "On the Go" will be "on the move" from Saturday morning to Sunday. Hamilton will remain at the help as the 25-year show moves to a shorter format of two hours from three and will air from 8-10 a.m.

News will be provided by the effervescent Katy Lever. She does news now for Hamilton in the show's 5-8 a.m. time slot.

"On the Go" has been on the KGO sked for 50-years, with Hamilton taking over in 1987. Hamilton notes that "On the Go" is the first, long-form talk show on travel and leisure in the country.

Hamilton says that losing the 5-6 a.m. near free-for-all of talk with listeners will be gone. The new two-hour format is dedicated to the many-year regular threesome of long-time co-hosts talking about cruise deals, hotel packages and travel arrangements. The new second hour will focus on local and regional events, travel and leisure topics.

"I'm thrilled," Hamilton says, "...no more waking up at 3:30 with a Pop Tart and a glass of milk for breakfast."

The move from Saturday to Sunday confirms that talker Pat Thurston is moving to the 2-5 afternoon slot on both Saturday and Sunday, as KGO initiates a five-hour news block from 5 to 10 a.m. Saturday.

On Sunday, "God Talk" continues its three-hour run from 5-8 a.m.

  1. Rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. Can't wait to see the ratings on Monday.

  2. I'd like to see KGO get rid of Copie.

But he's a brown-nose idiot. In other words the perfect Cumulus employee.

    1. I have no problem with Copie. He was never the best talk show host, but not terrible either. He can be funny. He need a paycheck like everyone else so I don't blame him for staying for the few hours they give him.

  3. I can hardly wait. We can hear Friday's news replayed again Sat AM. It's making me rethink my decision to stop listening! There has been a real hole Saturday AM for news. Hard to find it anywhere on the dial. Glad someone figured that out!

    1. Oh, you mean like the "Red Eye Radio Trucksers Show" repeats on Friday and Saturday nights? Yeah ... it can be called "In Case You Missed It Nooze!"

  4. More information on new weekend schedule, please. Pat Thurston said she will be on the air from 6-9 pm on Saturdays. What's happening to Karel??

    1. See below.

Moving to 9 to midnight Sat. Same "usual" time 7-10 on Sunday.

Thurston 6-9 Sat and 4-7 Sunday ... at least through this long, long night. Things could change. Maybe they'll just sign off.

  5. Smearing a shitpile into a different shape doesn't make it any less of a shitpile.

And this isn't directed at John Hamilton, whom I have respect and admiration for.

  6. Who cares, that travel show alwas seemed like paid radio to me.

  7. Will they ever stop screwing with this station? I think John Hamilton has the integrity NOT to do this...but I could see On The Go becoming almost an informercial, talking about hotels offering Groupon specials, promoting activities SweetJack is selling...I hope not, but I wouldn't put it past the "New KGO!"

    1. NEVER "Groupon" specials!

In "Cumulus Speak", that would be "SweetJack Specials" (that we will hammer over your head incessantly.)

  8. I was listening this morning (in Oregon to the skip signal before sunrise as I enjoy his show) and found it rather ironic that John said the reason the show wasn't just cancelled was because he has such a huge listening audience. Hmmm... sounds a little hypocritical since it appears to me they did not really consider that when they canned the other hosts. My guess continues to be they will stick with these expanded news blocks for a while; while inwardly hope that ratings continue to plummet and then make a switch to all sydicated and blame the lack of listeners on the "new" news format... whadaya think? I am happy for John, though, as he still has his job, even if it is an hour shorter...

    1. Not only a good share of way high "upper demo" listeners, but the show makes a small fortune in advertising revenue.

By paring it down on Sundays now from 8 to 10 a.m., lots less free for all talk with listeners and more cruise, hotel, leisure talk and ads. That simple.

John has a great personality and his interaction with listeners is good. The three wise-men of travel, hotels and leisure -- to be in hour one starting next Sunday -- are a snoozefest. I'd imagine that's part of the revenue production.

Will "God Talk" precede it? Will it be cut back to, say, one hour at 5 a.m. for "KGO Sunday Snooze" from 6 to 8? God only knows ... and he's not telling, yet.

And what about 10 am to 4 pm on Sunday? Thurston at 4, we know. Karel, we know. Monty 10-12, maybe?

On Saturday ... news till ten then ... Peter B. Collins?
Who at 1? News till 6? Can't take it anymore. Peace out.

  9. hmmm Peter B Colins just said that Pat Thurston will be on from 6 to whatever on Saturday...does that mean evening? No Karel? Or a.m.? I'm confused

  10. Thurston starts next Saturday from 6 to 8, she said this am. Where does that leave Karel? I'm sure he will be talking tonight about whether or not he is out.

    1. Thurston from now on 6-9 pm on Saturday and 4-7 on Sunday.

Could be a pinch-hitter next weekend for the new show as she is having a sit down chit chat with award winner Rachel Maddow at San Jose State next weekend.

Karel from 9 to midnight which will scare the wits out of the late nighters. Then, a return engagement on Sunday from 7 to 10.

As for Monty? Who knows. As for 10-1 Sunday? Who knows. 2-5 Sunday? More snooze? And hopefully, more "All night truckers Red Eye Radio crap" at midnight on both nights.

"God Talk" stays on Sunday? Stay tuned. No one knows yet. "All snooze not all the time - KGO 810." "You give us 10 minutes, we'll make you lose your last meal -KGOne 810."

  11. After listening to KGO for soo many years (30+)
believe I am just done with it all and have stopped
listening and even caring about KGO. When soo,soo
much was dumped (even Sundays with Leo Laporte and Bob Brinker).
It was time to move on and find other sources for information and not rely on KGO for anything. Verry Sad!

  12. A weepy Karel announces that he's on his way to the graveyard of radiodom starting next Saturday. The move takes him from 7-10 to 9 to midnight Saturday and his "usual" 7-10 on Sunday night.

"It's sad. If they don't know it ... a host on for two nights straight on different times will kill the show."

He later mentioned that "I am just a performer in the circus. Someone new -- Cumulus -- owns the tent. I just do what I'm told to do."

He is happy to be employed, but very unhappy about the shift change. "They don't consult me. What am I supposed to do, go in and stomp my foot?"

Much (too much) of the big show was about his dog, Ally, who "has no symptoms" but is "Pooping ribbons ... of poop!" Thinks it's a tumor and that the beloved pet has "impacted anal gas" and has to be tested on Monday. "I have no money, so screw Wells Fargo Bank. I'll make up the mortgage in a couple of weeks to save my friend."

Sad. Pathetic. A public spectacle that caused him to interview Kevin Costner's moving tribute to Whitney Houston -- right in the middle of it -- to talk about "my problem with my dog."

Rich didn't want to post this upfront, out of fear we'd all be pooping ribbons.

Hope Karel empathizes and sympathizes with his beloved pet dog, Ally. That's very sad. Sad enough to be on a 50,000 watt radio blowtorch over and over and over again.

Please hope he euthanizes humanely the doggie before it goes catatonic.

This is not a competition as to when this happens. Please, no wagering.

  13. What does this all mean for Timothy Monteminor? Also you claimed Stacy Taylor was out but he said today he will be back next week. I love your blog and read it regularly but you seem to be jumping the gun on this one. I'm sure you won't publish this comment the same as my previous one....you can't get them right all the time...

    1. "Monte-minor" -- LOL! Maybe he was air checking his wackiness in shouting volume as an audition for his next gig.

    2. I didn't hear that. Perhaps you heard Stacy say 'tomorrow'? He's stated that today, Sunday, is his last day at KGO.

    3. Yesterday Stacy spoke to Mike Finney and asked Finney if his show would also shift. Based on the exchange it appeared Stacy said he'd be back next week at an uncertain time. I thoroughly enjoyed his show. Too bad he is out.

  14. Karel never has any money but manages trips to Europe, a $1500 TV, has all of the latest devices, suggests he might fly to the East coast for some activity, whatever....

Do his beloved followers send him money? He certainly seems to hint for it often enough, and last night he planted the idea in their minds by saying that he couldn't accept it.

I would like to see a profile of his fans.

How sad that he remains in the wake of the demise of so many good people. I keep hoping that he is on the way out, although I'll miss the one I love to hate.

  15. Anon 10:54 am , you make me sick! Karel's dog is sick and you want to make fun of that. Idiot . I find his love for his dog touching, one of the better things he talks about.

    1. Well, that makes two. You and Karel's dog. "She doesn't have any symptoms and acts normal ... but." Interrupting a touching tribute to a music icon as Kevin Costner did yesterday is no professional reason to interrupt the "tape" just to talk about your personal business and your god-damn dog.

I want dog talk? I listen elsewhere to someone who has a good show about it. Not whiny bullshit on a 50,000 watt radio station that is depressing enough to listen to as it is.

As a pet owner, best to Karel's dog. She must be exhausted listing to the idiot that owns her.

      Get a life.

    2. Hey! 8:04. 10:54 is right. Mourn your dog on YOUR time, not on mine. Take the night off, whatever. What next, a voodoo seyonce to talk with his dead dog? His business is his business ... not mine. Boyfriend losses, husband losses (after 10 years, still) and general idiot bullshit is old. Really old.

And most of the Apple stuff he whores is "review product" that must be returned or bought hevily discounted. Like his last motorcycle, too. He brings it on himself. No one did it to him. Except the Republicans.

    3. Attention Anon. 8:04 -- Listening quite clearly, Mr. Karel started his wing-nut funfest right off the bat talking about his "Dog Deathwatch" and "pooping ribbons." Talk about S-I-C-K. That was entertainment to the max wasn't it, you dumbass. It was all about "ME!"

If he hadn't been crying so much, his voice wouldn't be shot. Seven "live" shows? Let's see, Wed at the Razz Room, pretaped Wed show. Thursday on his little radio show, pretaped his Friday show and live on KGO last night. That's five. And that's his job. Can't do it? Get off the air. He's full of more shit than his dog.

  16. Reading this at 8:40 a.m. Sunday made me laugh. No one knows who will be on when - and we're the people who want to know! I haven't followed a lot of radio stations in my lifetime, but I don't know if there's ever been an incompetent, mixed-up spectacle such as this.

  17. I heard both Peter B. Collins and Stacey Taylor announce yesterday that they would no longer have shows on KGONE. Peter B. emphasized that he had not been fired. I will miss Stacey's weekend shows. He asked Michael Finney if he would be back next week, and Michael indicated that his show would be on.

  18. Actually a couple of the changes I like. I like having John Hamilton on Sundays 8-10 because it is a good radio time for me. His current show is too early. Also, I really don't like to listen to Pat Thurston be all intense and serious first thing on a week-end morning. I might tune in later in the day if I'm really bored or doing something that needs a radio show to keep me company, although it sounds like it's early week-end evenings when I have better things to do. I would love it if they gave Michael Finney a third hour and did it on Saturday morning, like 9-12 or 10-1 like years ago. That 5:00 Saturday hour is horrible and I forget to tune in.
All said, I hate KGO management. I'm sick of switching the dial trying to find something decent to listen to and then when it get's dark, losing reception. I'm going back to some CD's I bought a few years back so I can learn Italian in my car on the way home from work or listening to music like I did in college. Still, I so miss live talk with quality hosts.
