The Latest Train Wreck at KGOne; Weekend Radio Apocalypse; Monday Mash

I was out like a light on Sunday. SuperBowl done and then comes this:

"This makes Spencer Hughes sound like Johnny Carson. KGO is, obviously, trying to get younger."

From an e-mailer, talking about the trainwreck at KGOne from 10 PM to 1 AM: who's the lucky winner this time? "The Monty Show", a sports guy from several markets that the clueless ones at Cumulitis said, "hey you, wanna be on the RAAYDIO?" Thus, we get "The Monte Show."

How bad/good? He was apparently literally, (said many) begging for calls--that's right, begging. Can this radio apocalypse get any worse? Yes, yes, yes.

Supposedly, there's a club out there that has formed and found innate guilty pleasure and what might that pleasure be? Listening, if you can say that word, to KGOne on the weekend. The weekend, where, ironically, the only legit souls from KGOne can be heard, (Stacy Taylor and Christine Craft).

Problem with Craft and Taylor: They're preceived as being "too old", whatever the hell logic that consists of--logic? Did I use that word? I'm getting a headache right now and I seriously didn't need to start the week off in this mood--can we just finally say that hovering near the 810/680/560 dial is hazardous to your health.

HELLO, IS THE CALLER THERE? Thanks for taking my call!

  1. I heard some of Monty's interview with Jean Quan on Saturday night. He was a good interviewer, asking tough questions. He was likewise as good the week before, interviewing Howard Jordan, Oakland's police chief. Have you listened to him, Rich, or are you taking 2nd hand information? Monty is a million times better than some of the other dreck on KGO, such as Red-Eye (or Dead-Eye) radio.

  2. I am no fan of Monty's but I give him credit for trying. You can tell he prepares and has enthusiasm. Hell, he even spars vs Karel as they pass from one show to the other. I feel sorry for the guy if he is begging for calls.
I listen to Thurston, Collins, Taylor and if awake some God talk. 6am on Sunday is too early to feel like I am sitting at a college seminar class. Brent Walters can go on El Rushbo type monologues and at times it is hard to listen.

  3. I heard the entire Monte show last night while working and I can't say I heard him beg for calls. I like this blog and enjoy the stories but when are you going to write something other than KGO sucks. I listen to the station often and monte is not the show to single out as a train wreck. Peter B should not be on any radio station, Karel is going to be at some hotel in 11 days and he is begging for people to go to his show, Pat Thurston moves as slooooowwwww as any show and craft yells and talks over callers. Just because these people were part of the old KGO does not make their shows any good! Ronn is boring! Gene Burns is a legend but I stopped listening because he was BORING! Monte is talking to Mayor Quan and going after her on police corruption on Saturday night with a lot of callers. He lets callers talk and the biggest complaint you have is he has been a sports guy? Who cares. I want shows to be interesting and while I do not think a station full of guys like Monte makes for great radio his show is entertaining and I am a 47 year old guy in the 99% who is ready to stop talking about how bad KGO is so let's move on. Thank you for this blog Rich I do mean to be rude, just had to vent

  4. The train wreck came when Monte (he says it is MONTY in case any one cares and I don't) went to Paul Rogers for news and it was Carolyn Burns! This is market #4 you think they would tell the host of the show when there is a change in the news department. The show was fine he had callers when I was listening around 11 until about 1230 but the station sounds like radio school. Dead air all over the place and Karel BEGGING for people to come to his comedy show next week. To his credit Monte-Y interviewed the two biggest names in Jordan and Quan but you would never know about it, no mention on the website hell his name is not even on the website. K-Gone is a joke

  5. You flat nailed it, Rich. KGOne doesn't even put bona fide "talent" on the air, now. It's all "producers" -- like Tim "Monte" Montemayor and the other "producer" turned assistant-PD, Jared Hart.

Could we ask, nicely, for Cumulus not to keep running repeats of the Red Eye Trucker show two nights in a row?

And don't forget, Karel -- who had orgasm talking about Madonna and how he likes football players "tight ends" all damn night. That and his take on the "big game's commercials." Top news to report on Super Sunday from Karel? Not the game -- but that Fernando & Greg from 97.7 NOW had re-signed. "I'm proud to be gay," Karel says. "Program Director's hate it when I do that." Geesh.

    Another trainwreck weekend on KGOne.

  6. What a dam mess, Cumulitis has made. Honestly they should get some kind of an award.

I know this is probably taboo: however , I can't help but think that the condition of Gene Burns was most likely brought about from the neanderthal way he was shown the door. In a cubby cubicle, with a blank envelope, a small box, and an escort to get him/them out.

  7. When does Jared get his own show? (Or does that not pay enough for him?)

    ReplyDelete
  8. Exactly what I am thinking, good stuff Rich. This Monty is loud with not much substance if any. Definitely does not make you think, what a downgrade.

Also, 95.7 is getting worse by the day. That sb postgame show with that obnoxious ny guy cheering on the giants and continuing to bash the niners, raiders, and local teams. i understand they want to cater to the east coast transplants, but c'mon now. They'll be changing formats by the end of this year. Just a disgrace right now, no there there is an understatement.

  9. Rich, the adventure continues. J

ust now (11AM), they ran a promo for this morning's 9AM hour topic ... which I heard 2 hours ago. Can you say "Get Traffic and Continuity on the phone?" Umm, are there still Traffic and Continuity Departments left there?

  10. Noticed something interesting with KGOne's signal. I'm about 150 miles north of SF and usually have no problems listening day or night. But something has changed and now I'm hearing two stations on 810. This has never happened before that I can remember. I know the antenna pattern changes at sunset but I can't help but wonder if Cumulitis has also screwed with the station's transmitting equipment or personnel? I've heard the other station both during the day and night but haven't identified who they are, (call letters)

    1. KTBI 810 50kw daytime 23 kw in Critical hours in Ephrada Washington (http://bit.ly/KTBI81area). It has religous programs has rumored to complain about KGO's "sinful" programing especially at night when they KTBI goes off the air. I think it is a technical issue related to the time of year and the recent active sun spot activity that may have an impact on the radio signal patterns.

Here is all the North American Stations on 810: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/810_AM

    2. I have heard KTBI stay on the air long past sunset twice in the past. In Sacramento, its signal steps on KGO. The last time this happened I complained to the station and to the FCC. I heard nothing from either KTBI or from our toothless regulator. Nada. Zilch.

Fortunately, since I no longer listen to KGO, I will not have this problem again.

    3. Not Unless someone buys it and returns it to the old time award winning hosts. KTBI engineers must have been sleeping on their posts or maybe a deliberate act. It is a total disgrace what Cumulus have done to KGO!

  11. If you are not listening you should not be ripping the guy. I did listen and I agree the interviews are very good. He went right at Quan asking the question respectfully and getting actual answers to the questions. The Jordan interview the same. How is it that Ronn does not have these people on? Monty is younger and "hipper" I guess, I like his show well enough, I wish he was on earlier or instead of Karel who as it was said here was talking about his little comedy show and how he was scared kgone listeners would turn out and ruin his show begging for people to buy tickets, classy. The Burns things bothers me, I do not think you can say Kgone forced him ill, the man is advanced in years. They force their listeners ill with these awful news people who can't read a story without stumbling all over the place, and yes I heard the fiasco at 11 last night when Monty tossed to Paul and it was the lady, it is that stuff that would never happen at the old KGO.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Oh come on he tossed to the wrong News Anchor! That's what you're complaining about. He can't see the anchor from the booth and it can get confusing when we do the pass off to the next anchor. Geez, every time I think the KGO hate can't get any worse, yup someone "you know who" makes an even sillier critique of the station.

Rich, I know you really, really wanted to be a talk show host on KGO and it's payback time but really?

    1. Oh Mel, we know you're their water boy. You still want a paycheck. And that's OK. But the rest of the former listeners have valid points of view on how much KGO sucks now, sorry to say. I do hope you've updated your resume and are looking because I wouldn't be surprised if KGO's days are numbered.

    2. People certainly have valid issues about any broadcast, but the host tossed to the wrong anchor just was the height of silly time. I can remember instances when Gene Burns and pretty much everybody made the same very, very minor mistake. John Rothman tossed to me once and said "now Kim McCallister with the news." It was just a slip of the tongue because Kim normally anchored in that slot.

By the way I work at another broadcasting shop as well and I do other free lance work, so I defend KGO because I'm feisty and think some of the critiques are really over the top. If folks want to attack the station fine, just please give me the right to call people's arguments foolish when I will and we'll all agree to disagree, passionately at times, but hopefully with the snark lightened by a bit of good humor now and then.

I didn't say KGO "forced Gene Burns ill" However, stress brings on illness that may have otherwise not have occurred. It has been reported that Gene had to hold onto a desk several times during his end time at KGO. I don't know , but losing one's job unexpectedly like that had to have been stress filled.

I held back on saying this for a long time, out of respect for Mr Burns.

Seems like the very important people who decided to let him go aren't doing too well with their new and improved station. I bet the station who quickly picked up Mr Burns is doing a whole lot better, just saying.

  14. Mel, you can say all you want in defense of KGO, but 95% of their content is unbearable. Ronn sounds deflated, like some bully is stealing his milk money at recess.

I can't help but think that Cumulus took a cue from The Producers. KGO is so bad, it has to be intentional. I can almost hear "Springtime for Hitler and Germany" in the background.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I can't even fathom why anyone would consider Monte as an acceptable "replacement" for John Rothman. It's like trading prime rib for SPAM. SPAM can "do the job" of putting meat on the table, but it ain't prime rib. Besides, I thought KGO was doing away with the talk show format. Did they change their minds?

I don't see Monte as "hip". Youth doesn't equate with "hipness" - mentality, intelligence, and consciousness does, at any age. I still say George Carlin was the "hippest" guy" there ever was, right up until the day he died. I see the younger "demographic" as less educated, less aware, and far less able to see the bigger pictures of repeating patterns in society and the world.

The only purpose of catering to a younger demographic is because they still don't know how they're being manipulated and used. Their very "hipness" is largely a creation of corporate definition. Hipness isn't about age, about how many high tech gadgets you own, what fashions you wear, what music you listen to, or what words or phrases you use ... corporations mostly set the standards and definitions of "hipness" in order to sell their products and services back to reflect, reinforce, and perpetuate those images. Corporations define what is "hip" so that ignorant, especially younger, generations, will buy into that current image du jour and keep it going until it is no longer useful for generating profits. Older generations have seen the patterns come and go for so many decades they see beyond the hype. It's not that older generations aren't "hip" - it's that most of them are beyond the hype of "hip" and know it's an advertising illusion.

Monte is just the latest commodity used to entice younger listeners into thinking they are "better" than previous generations. Older generations have seen the trends change so many times the perspective on that bigger picture is clearer - it's easier for older generations to recognize the forest of illusion is made of fake trees. Now that is really hip.

WE LISTENED TO KGO RELIGIOUSLY AND PARTICIPATED IN ITS EVENTS. It's so confusing, unless Cumulus really does just want to run this station into failure/bankruptcy. What a waste. (And what greedy idiots.) I would PAY (subscribe) to get a station just like KGO back. (Satellite, anyone??)I am desperate for the range of topics, the exchange of ideas and perspectives, the sense of community, the CURRENT local news coverage, esp. in times of disaster. (And if you have someone like Rothman - a true historian who is so fascinating you wish he'd been YOUR highschool history teacher - you're in heaven.)

And Peter B. Collins??? He is a BORE. That is the time-slot Christine should have. Shame on Cumulus.

At first, I didn't like Monty and his loud voice, but he has really grown on me lately. I like that he's not afraid to argue with Karel. He also wins brownie points for his interview with the Mayor of Oakland. The only issue I have with him is his obsession with the Occupy movement, he discusses it every night he's on. If I have to listen to Monty discuss Occupy Oakland one more time, I may toss my radio out the window just to race down the stairs and catch it in time because that's just how much I'm starting to like his show.

  18. "Monty" is in over his head. Keeps telling the audience he's a news "nerd." Yet, he is as shallow as a host can be. He doesn't "beg" for callers. He just continues to change the topic and repeat the phone number after every paragraph. He had a caller Sunday night talking about a "negative income tax. Favored by Milton Friedman and Robert Reich. He showed absolutely no knowledge as to what the caller was getting at. Then he keeps telling us how much he reads. Thou doth protest too much. A well informed host doesn't tell the audience he really is a well informed guy. Sorry, Spencer Hughes looks terrific in comparison.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Who is this 'Monty' guy anyway...and why is he even on the air at KGO? I heard he got fired by that new FM sports station because he wasn't every good, (I heard him once or twice and he stunk!) so now KGO goes and gives him his own talk show on the weekends? I guess that's what Cumulus does!

Monty sounds like another blowhard know it all loudmouth who actually knows little or nothing about what's going on and is only infatuated with the sound of his own voice. Why do these twits and their ilk keep getting jobs on the radio, while more experienced, professional and credible announcers are pushed aside to satisfy the 'younger demographic?'

This whole BS about the 'young demographic' is just that...
the people who spend the money are the ones of over 40...they are more established and have more available liquid capital. This whole nonsense about how radio needs to cater to the 'young demographic' is a bunch of propaganda and nonsense put forth by the corporate media and fed to a naive public.

When you consider the conservative mega-companies that now own 90 percent of American radio stations here in 2012, you can understand why they make blundering decisions to put idiots and no-talents like
'Monty' on the air and firing solid pros like Rothman or Burns.
It's a sad state of affairs, but Americans have only themselves to blame for allowing it to happen.

And I'd like to know where in the constitution there is anything written about the rights of corporations to even exist in our democracy. These plundering pirates like to wrap themselves up in the flag and talk about the glories of capitalism...but capitalism and democracy
    are not inextricably related.

These mega companies should get down on their knees and be thankful that our government basically bends over and lets them do whatever they want with public lands, property, and our precious airwaves. Many of the people who run these unscrupulous businesses that are plundering and destroying any hope for the future are the
truly 'un-american' entities that should be banished from our free
society! Yet conservatives love to whine about 'big and instrusive government.' How about big and instrusive big businesses that hire legal 'guns' to cover their backsides while they rape and pillage this land. Shame on them and shame on all Anmericans who haven't woken up yet to smell the unmentionable stink that they've created!

  24. What I really liked was his lame attempt at patriotism: "Go out and buy an American car. ... Oh, Fiat does own Dodge they make Dodges in America."

Spare me. From my personal experience, the three American cars and one "foreign" car MADE IN AMERICA were total pieces of shit. My last car was traded in for a brand new Toyota because at low mileage its electrical system was malfunctioning and the company wouldn't fix it because it couldn't "replicate" the problem. Uh, the battery would just die. When I looked it up on the Internet, I realized there would not be a recall, as there should have been, and the company had no answer. So, I just decided I'm going back to Nissan, of which I owned three and all went hundreds of thousands of miles without a problem. Only thing is, I was looking for gas mileage and the Leaf didn't sell me, so I went over to Toyota and bought a Prius.

Never again will I buy American anything in autos. Never. That was my mantra when I was younger. I should have stuck with it.

Monty is nice and he has had local people whom he has interviewed, but he is no journalist, and he's kind of a sycophantic ass-kisser leading up to, during and after the interviews.

Any journalist knows questions to have asked the Oakland mayor and police chief that Monty didn't ask. He didn't ask them because he's an ass-kisser.

As for a comparison to Rothman? That's like a college graduate (Rothman) compared to a nursery-school student (Monty.) Are you kidding me? There is no comparison. Who would compare a college graduate with a 5-year-old?

  25. oh, one more thing: why shout KGO's number each time? This is the first time I've listened in a while. I was about to throw the radio through the wall if I heard the phone number one more time. Is that part of the new KGO marketing mentality, the same one that put the station in the dumps? And, KGO, your little films online with a really good-looking reporter and an old Peter Finch may look good (if you're a guy and think the reporter is hot), but your news sucks. Nothing against the reporters there. And she sure looks better than the talking heads that you had on earlier, the guy and gal duo; you know, the ugly ones who think they have great voices but one doth giggles too much(I know, poor grammar, but Media News fired my editor). F--- KGO. and F--- 910 except when Len and John are on. Gil is as boring as wall paper, Rosie is predictable and shallow. I wish I would have listened to Christine about the corrupt SF Sheriff and the corporate-owned Komen, which has taken stands on a proven cancerous additive to plastic that should make anyone donate to some other worthy organization. Although I'm against abortions personally for the sake of ending a pregnancy, but understand the need in the event of rape, incest, birth defects, etc. (no, I don't favor legislation banning abortion; it's a personal choice), I will give any donations I have to Planned Parenthood for free mammograms. I will never, ever donate a dime to Komen and never would have in the first place. It's corporate-"owned." It is not leading the effort to ban substances that cause the very breast cancer it wants to eliminate. All its corporate donors know this. Check it out. As for the wife-abuser, where's there is smoke, there is fire; in this case, a raging inferno of emotional abuse and a control freak with a lot of pent-up anger.

KGO radio is a much better station now that they have unloaded the dead wood. They do a mostly credible job giving us the news (although there is a liberal bias in their slant), and that's because fair companies such as Cumulus give them some leeway.

  36. Hey...has anyone here ever been to Red Room? It's this website for right wing nuts like the writer Steve Travers. Ever heard of it or of him?

He and Anne Coulter are the only true-blue conservative voices out there who represent the mainstream silent majority of us white folks.
God bless them and god bless our great country? I sit down and thank god each day for giving us a congress that has the wisdom to allow us to arm ourselves to the teeth.

We must always guard against the terrorists who seek to sap and impurify our precious bodily fluids!

  37. There are a lot of conservative Americans left in this push button world, and we're stronger than ever! We'll defeat Obama and socialism in the fall and then put a real American back into the White House.

If it were up to Obama and the liberals, they'd emasculate our businesses and make us apologize to the middle east for mussing up t their hair! What a bunch of whining, pansy-assed cretins!

Real Americans appreciate what companies like Cumulus are doing to make our local radio stations more fair and balanced by eliminating these subversive liberal talk show hosts who want to bring down our way of life!

    1. Conservatives do not exist in the traditional sense anymore. The persons claiming to be conservatives are just right wing extremists that parrot the dogma they absorb while listening to the propaganda on right wing radio shows.

  38. Having had the mis-pleasure of hearing this maroon this AM, I felt compelled to find a place I could register my revolt about this idiot.

Not only does he have little or no knowledge on the subjects he wants to discuss, but he seeks only to be contrary about any subject he does discuss.

A transparent shill for reactionary, right wing causes is about as trite as it gets on radio these days.

Worse: He has no ability to actually hold a conversation, and makes up stuff while quoting random statistics he dredges up from the Internet. Only George Noory is more intolerable than Monty.

KGO is just another mass market melange of mediocrity, a real loss to the Bay Area.
