Gene Burns has not been feeling well, (there was a medical complication--leave it at that), but his assistant wants all of you folks to know that Mr. Burns is OK.
Joel Riddell, his assistant, tells me he's feeling better.
"Gene is on the mend and recuperating well here in SF--he's looking forward to his return to NewsTalk 910."
Burns was scheduled to return to the Bay Area airwaves on the new SF talk station, but due to several health issues, that has been postponed.
The ex-KGO talker was one of several let go in the local ambush, last Dec. 1 Burns has been in the Bay Area since 1995.

Thanks for the update. It has sounded a bit ominous, this tidbit from Joel makes it sound more hopeful.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Richie!
ReplyDeleteGet well soon, Gene. Miss you something terrible.
ReplyDeleteYes Rich, thanks for the update. I got pretty concerned after reading your blog yesterday, so this is great to hear.
ReplyDeleteGene is a lovely, kind and wonderful man I wish him well.
ReplyDeleteIn the mid-90s I had the opportunity to work for him part-time as a talk show producer. Unlike some I've worked for over the years he always valued the opinion of producers.
He would go so far as ask me to argue a point out loud with him before he tried it out on the air. What a wonderful mental workout!
One thing that my second boss in radio told me long ago was "kid, if you can do talk radio you can do anything in this business." I've had the chance to do so a time or two, but watching Gene is truly to watch the Maestro at work.
Get well Gene and God Bless!

I'm so glad you wrote about this. I've been so worried about Gene. I know it must be driving him crazy to have everyone but him doing his show. On the other hand, it sure was great listening to John Rothmann yesterday.
ReplyDeleteJim Gabert was on today for Gene. Awesome man.I really enjoyed his show. Love his stance about government spending and also that political parties (particularly the Repubs) should leave the "values" at the door.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the update. I too was feeling dread after your "prayer" post. It sounds that with rest Gene will once again rise. Had Gene succumbed the Dickeys would have had blood on their hands. God I hate those two muther f-ers....
ReplyDeleteGene Burns is the heavy weight boxer of talk shows. Life may knock him down, but he'll do his damnedest to beat the eight count and get back to the mic.
ReplyDeleteListening to Gene is like having a conversation with my elderly Grandfather...I always learn a thing or two, I'm always soothed by their gentlemanly demeanor and voices, and I always feel lucky that I had one more chance to connect.
ReplyDeleteOver the past few years, with Gene having some health issues (and Pete Wilson dying suddenly), it became that much more apparent to me that Gene won't be with us forever, so we need to appreciate what we have now, while we still have him around. I doubt Gene will ever really "retire"...unless it's like an Andy Rooney retirement where he's basically about to keel over...but I keep praying he's got 10+ more years for us.
Take your time and get well, Gene. We'll be here whenever you're ready.
Great posts! I dialed 910 AM on the radio but all I got was sports chat. Did I dial incorrectly? Seems everyone is in tune with the former great KGO hosts, but ME! Can someone please respond to my post and tell me exactly how to find the new talk radio where I can hear my favorite hosts? Thank you again, Rich, for the updates on Gene.
ReplyDeleteI, too, am a fan of Gene's and was very, very concerned about his health. I truly wish him a speedy recovery and he is in my prayers. Thank you Rich, for keeping us all updated on his status.
OMG--Wacko John Lennon Murder Guy called in to
ReplyDeleteGil Gross on 910 am yesterday. What a crazy person!!!
