  3. Why the heck did they "dismiss" him? Yeah, I'll switch to 910 to continue to catch his show. It was fun listening, as well as informative. Thanks, Len!

  4. Great news, and just the right time slots for both of them!I can't help but wonder if there's going to be any familiar faces (read voices) on the 9:00 to to noon slot?

Is Mickey Luckoff involved in any of this, and what about John Rothmann and Ray?

Wonderful news, and a great pre-Christmas present!

  6. Hooray.
Let's see Tillem kick Cumulus' KGO puny Arbitron ass.
I'll be there to listen to his first show.

  7. Looks like the station to listen to is KKSF 910AM. I talked to Gil about him going to KKSF and he said he may just go back to news hopefully ABC.

    ReplyDelete
  8. That didn't take too long! Of course we'll be listening!

    ReplyDelete
  9. Tres bien Len! We'll all be tuning in on the 3rd.

  10. So glad to hear this!! I will have to switch my preset from 810 to 910! Will miss hearing him while I eat my lunch at 1:00.

  11. Now all we need is Gil noon-3 and John R. 7-10

  12. FANTASTIC -- now I just hope the signal is strong enough to last me on my drives to/from Sea Ranch. Good to have Len Tillem back!

  18. Ha Ha Ha 2:10 pm

Still living in the 60's eh, better load up
the bong again you dolt. Do you realize that Clear Channel started the downward spiral of radio.? Power to the people my ass, first 910 AM has no power, second it's a Clear Channel station, they are trying to make a few bucks on successful shows, nothing more, nothing less.

  19. Yay! My husband is a lawyer, i used to listen to len and and tell my husband all the interesting calls len would get. My hubbys law career is boring, he does patent litigation. He graduated from boalt, while in school, one of his professors once said "You know, len tillem isn't always right" :)

    ReplyDelete
  20. Sweet. I can't wait to listen to Len again.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Do they stream?? I'm in Santa Cruz & I doubt the signal comes this far.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I live a long ways from the BA, but listen via network. I can't find the URL for KKSF 910. Their FM station is noted, but what is the AM addy? thanks

    ReplyDelete
  23. Pretty soon Mickey isn't going to have much of a talent pool for his station...

    ReplyDelete
  24. Wonderful news! I started listening to 910 in the later evening hours since there's nothing on KGO anymore, so my pre-set is now 910. I can't wait to hear Gene and Len again, and sure hope Gil and John find reachable homes soon. When 910's ratings soar past KGO, if they haven't already, just remember that karma is a bitch.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Great news; I'm very happy for the Loyah!!
If Ronn would have had some cajones, he would of walked away from KGO and join his colleagues at 910. Less money I'm sure, but sometimes it's not always about the money. I hope KGO crashes and burns.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Great news, the north bay radio audience are big fans of Len. I will be sure to listen.

    ReplyDelete
  27. SUPER wonderful..thanks Rich. Yes bye KGO....no network news at the top of the hour either...what have they become! Great... Len and Gene...just add Gil and we have it.

  28. I've been listening to 910 every morning for quiet a few years. I love the humor of Armstrong and Getty. Now I will have my radio on that station almost all day. I'll just keep my fingers crossed they can pick up John and Ray. Ray might have been retiring, but I'd sure like to listen to him again.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I can get 910 fairly well. May need a new CC Crane radio in the upcoming future. WTG, Len and Gene!

    ReplyDelete
  30. KKSF 910AM is THE place to be! Congrats to Len! Can't wait to hear the show.

    ReplyDelete
  31. lens show is great!!!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Fantastic. It looks like 910 may be the new station soon.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Can't wait to listen to Len and Gene!! Adios KGO!! I agree; let's get Gil Gross in there, too!! OH!! And can you steal Karel away also?! I'd love to have all my favorites on one channel!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Finally, 910 is going to be my channel. Go Len.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Looks like KKSF is picking up the KGO talent by the boatload.

    Gene Burns - 4-7 PM
    Len Tillem
    And Bob Brinker on Sundays!

Rich (or readers), is Dr. Bill's gig at KSCS permanent? Or could he also flip over to 910 AM? Or does the good Doctor prefer the national show on TRN?

    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Opps, Brinker is on 560 KSFO.

    ReplyDelete
  37. My grandma probably listened to KGO since the 50-60s maybe even earlier right up until her death a few years ago. She would listen all day long. She was rolling in her grave the other day when the KGO changes were announced. I picked up radio a few years back and tuned into KGO as well but I'm turning the dial and not looking back. Maybe Len will get a Sunday spot back. Clear channel can you also consider Leo Leport. But if I only had one choice it would be Len. We love you Len! This is the BEST X-mas present ever!

    ReplyDelete
  38. A Christmas present on the airwaves. HA HA HA

    910 is the new 810.

BTW 910 if you are listening, cumulus doesnt pay those folks anything, wait a while, then make the makes some offers (do your research!)

    ReplyDelete
  39. Great news!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Woo too!

Now if I could just have somewhere to listen to Gil and Dr. Dean....

    ReplyDelete
  40. Bring John Scott back to KNEW 910 as program director ! ( KKSF (!)? )

Get Sebastian Kunz some more news time.

I am an A and G contributor, and I love Len Tillem and Gene Burns.

Beating or coming close to Ronnnnnnnn in the 10-12 hours will be tough. Unless you are KQED radio, as that is Numero Uno by far.

    ReplyDelete
  41. A much better option at 3 PM than Razor Voice and Marble Mouth (Tolbert)!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Simple change. The "8" becomes a "9" on the preset.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Im in Los Angeles, get John, Ill listen every night on the internet.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Great news. Thank you, Rich.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Whatever you think of KGO's moves - it makes less and less sense as the days go on. Even if they flip the conservative syndicated shows to 810 - it isn't like KSFO was doing better than old KGO (ratings more than a full point below KGO).
You want to go mostly news? Better start strong and challenge the market leader - they aren't doing that. It is staffed and sounds like a place holder. It's like a chinese restaurant changing to a mexican menu because the taqueria down the street gets more customers. Fine, but you better make sure your food is better than the taqueria.
I just find it hard to believe Cumulus ponies up for KGO and other stations without at least some idea of longterm programming. And yet, now not only have they given up their identity, they've seen it picked up by another station.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Wouldn't mind the 'loyah' getting simulcast on Clear Channel's sister talker 650 KSTE in Sacramento. It would complement the station's talk programming for the capital area while filling in holes for 910's northern coverage area. Congratulations Counselor Tillem on the new gig!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Ummm... 910 AM's call letters are KNEW- NOT KKSF. It's also co branded with Fox. KKSF is a smooth jazz station on 103.7. The show will really be on KNEW.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Will kksf network with other stations to cover the nine bay area counties? I am safe here in SF
but when I travel, I would like for the signal to follow me.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Anon at 6:08:

<< Clear Channel to End Progressive Talker KKGN in San Francisco. The progressive talk programming currently heard on KKGN, San Francisco – Green 960 – will not go away entirely; it’ll be available online and on the HD-2 channel of sister oldies KKSF-FM, but since so few people have HD radios anyone seeking shows such as Dial Global’s Stephanie Miller and Thom Hartmann and Compass Media Networks’ Norman Goldman will have to find them online. The “death” of Green 960 comes as Clear Channel makes other changes to its Bay Area talk programming. In the New Year, KKGN flips calls to KNEW, picks up the Fox News Radio affiliation and a new lineup including Glenn Beck in AM drive, followed by Dave Ramsey, then Premiere’s Randi Rhodes (the only holdover from Green 960), and Fox News Radio’s John Gibson. Back at what is currently KNEW (910 AM), that station will take on new calls KKSF and become “San Francisco’s Talk 910 – KKSF.” >>

  50. Awesome news!! Of course we'll follow you, Len!!

  51. @6:02pm the bean counters are only looking at the short term. The bean counters are numbers driven. Your restaurant analogy is perfect. Soon enough all the former KGO talent will be back on air. Now, on a personal note, I hope the Dickie's private jets have mechanical malfunctions alas Ron Brown or Tesla executives. That would cap 2011 on a perfect note.

    ReplyDelete
  52. 6:08, yes 910's call letters are KNEW but today Gene Burns said they are changing.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Where is CC getting the money all of the sudden?

    ReplyDelete
  54. I've not listened to KGO since these layoffs (a change from my usual 4-6 hour a day habit). But now KKSF, here I come!

    ReplyDelete
  55. as we slowly see our favorite liberal hosts return to the air...we must begin to discuss our next steps...we must dismantle cumulus and destroy its economic center...cumulus is a cancer that has taken over the public airwaves of the nation...i never understood this comment so well before, but now i do, "the revolution will not be televised"

    ReplyDelete
  56. thanks rich....hope something can be done to save kgo in the long run...until then...hope we see you on the 15th....

    ReplyDelete
  57. good news and what about Ray? SF Bay Area needs R.Taliaferro broadcastinng for better area wide radio. Thank You.

    ReplyDelete
  58. The 6:08 PM post is correct. 910 AM is KNEW and is Fox radio. That aside for those of you that are in the hinterlands and wish to follow the station stream, the URL is: http://www.iheart.com/#/live/297/?autoplay=true

    ReplyDelete
  59. Can you please let us know if you hear anything about Ray Taliaferro and John Rothmann, Rich? I'm missing my Ray fix right now :( .

    ReplyDelete
  60. Dave Ramsay..you mean the "god wants you to be rich" con man?

    ReplyDelete
  61. @6:02 -- you made excellent points. This whole debacle doesn't make sense, even as 7:28 responded that the bean counters are only looking at the short term. There has got to be more to the story. It's obvious that the thinking was way out-of-whack, and to put on a half-baked "news" radio channel is sure death to KGO... and Cumulus's investment. It's like we're being punked, and we'll wake up and everything will be the same because this is the biggest joke I've heard in years.

    ReplyDelete
  62. SUCH good news...thanks so much, Rich, for keeping us posted!!

  63. "Will kksf network with other stations to cover the nine bay area counties? I am safe here in SF

You, sir, need to buy yourself a smartphone with iheartradio... and/or drop the sense of entitlement. Good lord. It's a RADIO STATION. They're not offering to follow you around. You need to meet them at least halfway.

    ReplyDelete
  64. This is wonderful news! Two of the best will be back on the air. Number 1 radio pre-set: gone 810, now 910.

    ReplyDelete
  65. The other weird thing about the Cumulus moves is that KGO was its highest rated station in the market. You want to tinker with a station, why not do it with a lower rated one like KSFO while you bank on KGOs market position for ad dollars.

    ReplyDelete
  66. 70 folks at KGO not enough? I wanted to go, but hey, work beckons. We're not the no-work crowd ala Occupy this or that.

And per the "Ronn Owens is a rainmaker". Was that his producer writing that, or his wife? No digs against Ronn, he does well with the "happy talk", but isn't this comment like saying that 49er coach George Seifert was a football genius? Seifert inherited a whole lot Walsh, Montana, Lott and Young.

With KGO decimated, if 910 AM puts up a strong host who is central left, center, or a center right broadcaster, what will happen to Ronn's numbers? And when half or three quarters of their audience take 810AM off of as their number 1 listening option?

We'll truly see if the North Beach Restaurant schmoozer is a "rainmaker".

  67. Gene Burns picked up by Newstalk 910, too. Press release out today:
Clear Channel San Francisco announced today that Newstalk 910 AM, San Francisco’s Talk Station, will begin to broadcast, effective January 3, 2012. Clear Channel San Francisco also announced today that Gene Burns and Len Tillem, San Francisco talk radio icons, will join the new station’s line-up, effective January 3, 2012. Burns and Tillem will be the only local afternoon talk shows to broadcast from San Francisco.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I've already moved my preset to 910 AM in anticipation. I'm happy to have my two radio friends back! Huzzah!!!

    ReplyDelete
  69. At the last minute, Clear Channel decided not to get rid of the liberal talkers on 960. It's a little complicated since 960 and 910 are flipping frequencies, but Randi Rhodes, Stephanie Miller, Thom Hartmann, etc., will still be on the air (but on 910 instead of 960).

  70. Great news about Len!!

I listened to Karel's podcasts from 12/19. Gene Burns, John Rothman and Ray Tallieferro were his guests.

Loved hearing all of the familiar voices again. Thought all were very candid about what happened. One comment that stuck with me (from Gene or John) was that not only did Cumulus fire some of our favorite talk show hosts, they also fired the KGO listeners.

    ReplyDelete
  71. How about a 2:45 flash gathering in SF on January 3d to listen to the opening of the new Len Tillem on 910 AM. Bring your own radio and snack. How about the lawn at Yerba Buena Center out the back door of the Metreon?? Rain moves us into the food court of the Metreon??
Posted by Elliott, the other Lowya.

  72. Great News! Len & Gene already programmed the radio. I love it Smart move 910AM.

  73. I'm so excited to have found out about this. I've been so sad and bored lately without listening to Len and Gene :(
Now I can be happy again, starting Jan. 3, 2012.
    Thank you, KKSF 910 AM!!!

    ReplyDelete
  74. GREAT NEWS!!! BEST XMAS PRESENT!!! THANK YOU KKSF 910 AM!!!

    ReplyDelete
  75. "not only did Cumulus fire some of our favorite talk show hosts, they also fired the KGO listeners."

    Amen.

Elliott--that's a great idea! But the thing is, if we get our hosts and the opp to call in again, I think we, as radio LISTENERS, will be happy to resume our former roles. And a rally to welcome Len will probably transpire in our work vehicles or elsewhere...However, a flash mob with dancing could prove iresistable!

My head still spins when I read all this happening in .....SAN FRANCISCO!!!! My God, if they can shut down the airwaves HERE, then no wonder the rest of the country is so confused!

Rich--suggestion. You and others have mentioned contacting the FCC and legislators. Could we get some talking points? Pinpoint where we can make a difference?

The angst here, the Bay Area, is significant. But folks have their own lives...I fear we will all fade away, especially if we get some of our former favorite talk folks on here or there.

It seems to me, ignorant of FCC regulations or intent, that this sweeping monopoly of the radio airwaves goes against the public interest.

Help us to make a difference while we are still riled up!

Thanks for all you do, and apologies to put more work on your plate. But this seems important, and "experts" need to help us mobilize.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Contacting the FCC is a waste of your energy. They stay clear of ANY formatics or programming function for radio & TV period. They can't even regulate satellite radio or TV.

The FCC will do nothing and your well-meaning letters will be put in the round file.

Why? Cumulus, which is the new "evil empire" has done nothing wrong. It bought, it changed KGO and it's moving on. It's not about the listeners ... they vote with their PPM devices and that hasn't been such a great deal for KGO of late. Cumulus is merely laughing at the listeners. ]

The FCC approved the transfer for $2.7 Billion from Citadel Media. The FCC, outside of obscenity issues is out of the fray.

Legislators? Why waste their time. They can support KGO and the listeners on both sides. They don't legislate broadcasting law that was established back in 1936 with the forming of the FCC.

    So, what to do?

Easy ... do what Cumulus did. BUY YOUR OWN Radio station! In some markets, you'll find them for very little bucks and no money coming in. If you're a KGO, expect to spend $100-million plus on the empire that Mickey Luckoff built. It takes $$$$$$ and lots of it.

I know, I've done it, successfully, in two smaller markets twice.

The FCC law is NOT about "WHAT is in the public need, trust and convenience." It IS about the airwaves being owned by the people to SERVE the pubic need, trust and convenience."

In other words ... we own the spectrum (airwaves) but we entrust through rules, regulations and the legal wrangling and huge dollars of corporations to stake their claim in the BUSINESS of radio and TV.

No one has ever said that being a broadcaster is free just because the spectrum is "owned" by the people. It is a "business" to be OPERATED by the likes of Cumulus, CBS, Emmis, Clear Channel and others.

That simple. Them's the facts, folks.

    JB

  77. Great news for Len and Gene, I will be a new listener of 910. I hope the others make it back to the air waves locally. I think at some point KGO will look back and see this as one of their most stupid moves much as Coke messing with their formula, Netflix renaming a portion of the their company. I know KGO lost me as a listener in the way they handled things even though I like Ronn I refuse to listen.

    ReplyDelete
  78. That is great news! I would love it if 910 got Gil Gross over there too!

Thanks for sharing the good news. Only wish the 910 signal were a little stronger - cannot really get it clearly in Los Gatos but I am counting on them live streaming the shows.

    Happy New Year!

  79. Wonderful news! Nine-Ten it is!

  80. Some decision-making people tend to be both, egocentric and stupid, without regards for clients or listeners in this case. I'm trilled we'll be able to continue listening to this humorous, down-to-earth attorney and the always charismatic, articulate Gene at 910! Bravo y adelante!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  81. Hey we need this in podcast form, so we can listen to it later. What are the chances that will happen?

    ReplyDelete
  82. I have been having withdraws without Len. I changed my preset channel to 910 from 810 and I'm happy again.

  85. Hi, Len,
So glad you're back on the air! Kudos to KKSF for hiring former KGO talent! I listen to you every day by podcast on my android phone, it works flawlessly. Really missed the "stories" and the "loyah" now i've got them back and it's great.
