KRON-TV, the venerable SF television station that has been a local albatross for years, since going independent in 2002, is selling its landmark building at 1001 Van Ness Avenue, and building a "state of the art" studio at a yet unknown location in the city, according to a well-placed station source.
The selling price has not been disclosed, but the property is in a prime real-estate area of the city, and is one of the station's most prized assets.
In 1967, KRON moved its studios and offices to the 1001 address. It was the former site of the Roman Catholic cathedral of SF. The TV transmitter was moved to Sutro tower in July of 1973.
MORE KRON NEWS--
*The station , according to the same source, (who asked his name not to be used due to the nature of the information provided), will be "farming out" the master control operations jobs to a company in Atlanta. That move is expected to lead to significant layoffs at KRON. The news was sent to the station via the local IBEW union, (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers).

Haven't seen Louisa Hodge lately. Is she still at KRON? Her facebook says she lives in Los Angeles.
ReplyDeleteSo the new State-of-the-Art building should have an extra room for Darya's hair and breasts and Gary's office will have a lock on the OUTSIDE of the door, right?
ReplyDeleteThey better use plenty of packing material in the crates for Radnich and Pam Moore...things that old are fragile when moved. Heck, you can already see the cracks now!
ReplyDeleteWasn't KRON on Golden Gate Avenue during the 1970s? Somebody among the blog readers please refresh me & Rich. I thought KRON arrived at Van Ness in 1987 and not 67.
ReplyDeleteLove all the Raddy dissings, but let's lay off the consummate professional Pam. Very cool lady.
KGO-TV/Radio was on Golden Gate Ave in the 70's before moving in 1984 to Front St.
ReplyDeleteKRON was in the basement of the Chronicle Building on Mission St. before moving to Van Ness in 1967. Large portions of he building were unused until the 1980s when the news & production operations started to grow. S.F. Gate moved into one of studios for a while, and Bay TV took up more room in the 1990s. Now the place is barely a shell of its former self and more resembles a ghost town.
ReplyDeleteAnon. @ 10:40: You may be thinking of KGO (TV and radio), whose studios were on Golden Gate Ave. until the mid-'80s, when they moved to 900 Front St.
ReplyDeleteUNTIL THERE IS THE ANNOUNCEMENT THAT OLD ASS FATNICH HAS BEEN CANNED,I COULD CARE LESS ABOUT ANY KRAP I MEAN KRON NEWS.SAME GOES FOR KNBRANCID!
ReplyDeleteFarming out master control is a real mistake. Master is the brain of the station. What happens if there's a transmitter problem? They're controlled by master these days. the manned transmitter is gone.

I'm guessing when the trio of nitwits who manage that place says "brand new state of the art facility" they actually mean "small office in warehouse somewhere." They've managed that place into the ground to the point where they have to sell off the property, and their first order of business is to eliminate the jobs of people who actually try to get that mess of a station on the air? Somebody needs to lop off the heads of the GM, News director and asst. news director asap. On the plus side, after they ship off the master control jobs somewhere else kron's shows will get even more ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteI guess Luscious Louisa's better off wherever she is, even if that's LA...
ReplyDeleteKGO-TV and KGO 81 (now "KGOne") were located on Golden Gate Ave, in the Tenderloin, when that neighborhood was the genuine article--home to the really down and out--until, I believe, the late 70s, maybe later, when ABC opened up shop on Front St. Almost half a year after this post, I agree--three cheers for Pam Moore, who didn't jump ship after 2002.
