O'Donnell/Ryan KPIX/49ers feh; Raddy returns, (but is he into it? No); Kate Scott lost in the Forest; Monday Media rundown

*CBS5/KPIX 49ers pre-season tonsils, Dennis O'Donnell and color analyst, Tim Ryan were downright over-the-top unintentionally hilarious Saturday evening.

Guys, its "exhibition football," not the creation of mankind. Put the broadcast in perspective. The x's and o's, over-modulated verbal mish-mish were out of place.

And Kim Coyle on the sideline is a stooge. A slightly vanilla version of Amy G.

Her "interview" with Braylon Edwards was tantamount to a gushing fan meeting her hero. Insane, really.

*The Radnich-Bruce drama Part 2: Raddy was not on the air Monday; apparently stuck in NY due to the storm, which couldn't have helped all the speculation that he's so not into his new show. He may have to stick it out as the Knibber morons have created a monster from 9-Noon.

Quick summation: the show doesn't work. Only one mike for two guys and clearly, the boorish Indiana lout doesn't help Garry and hurts his own stock, whatever that is.

The Kate Scott experiment is a colossal joke. Question? What does Kate Scott really add? Nothing. She's like ketchup on a French truffle. Her updates sound like audio test patterns. She has zero personality. And whatever chemistry she tries to create with the two yutzes is pure manufactured. Fire and ice? Try sandpaper and corduroy.

*By the way, the 49ers/Houston practice game? Outdrew the Giants/Astros from preliminary ratings by about 3-1, but that's not news. The NFL is king, always will be and as much as the Giants rule the town, the 49ers are defacto priority #1 in the Bay Area sports world.

*The Jan Wahl "Sleeptrain" spots have reached a new low: her tacky ads recently included the mention of the movie, "Schindler's List." I'm not kidding. Maybe Wahl should get her brain out of the mattress while she begins her new and latest insensitive stupid spot.

  1. Real question- what was Gary doing in NY anyway. Meeting with the big wigs of another outlet ?

  2. I'd say Gary was lucky for missing this cluster!

  3. Kim Coyle is probably the worst sideline reporter in the entire history of sideline reporters. Just awful.

  4. What's wrong with x's and o's in a football game?

  5. A bit harsh there on Kate Scott... They can pull her in as much as they like or let her sit on the sideline and give her updates. She is not used to being part of a "show" yet. Simmer down Liebs.

  6. I think you are off on Kate Scott. She does just fine and is a welcome change.

  7. I was thinking the same thing, whats Gary doing in NY. That isn't his usual vacation spot. Sounds like an interview to me. Also, there was 3 or 4 days advance notice that this hurricane was going to hit NY and it was predicted to be way worse than it was. They are saying that he decided to stay for the hurricane and now he can't get home? People that live there didn't stay for the hurricane! Hmmm.....

  8. Gary was probably at Cumulus HQ in Georgia telling somebody important how much his show stinksn with the D Douche infusion.

  9. @Janice Huff... Oooohh that was low. BTW... she STILL looks good after all these years. Well it's evident he loves the sistas. Rich should tell that story one day.

  10. Raddy has a home in the toney Hamptons where he hob nobs. His young wife likes the very good high life-why else you think he hasn't retired?
What today was,was a joke-the 9-12 hour was 50% talk,50% commercials...so many commercials Comcast sports net couldnt themselves find sponsors so ran that drive you insane background key board music while freezing on the same A's-Giants standings.
95.7 must be at least a third less in commercial time...and those looooong blocks KNBR runs is unchallenged.
KNBR really is run by a chimp.

  11. I don't mind Kate Scott at all -- I think she's the most dignified part of that entire show.

  12. Rich, I've spent the better part of the day in bed today with a bad back, most of it on pills, d Bruce is enough to make me get up and go pick up dog poop!

    ReplyDelete
  13. D Bruce is just awful, I have tried (and still trying) to understand the logic behind him being on the radio. He has no talent, talks over callers, is annoying and has no real value. So why does KNBR stick with him? It just doesn't make any sense. One can put Radnich in the mix too, he shares the same attributes as Bruce.

  14. Kate is a bit like Marsha Brady I think. She means well but is a goodie-two-shoes. That being said, it's hard to build a statue when SHIT is the main ingredient.

  15. I listened to DBruce the other day and he sounded fine, about the same as he did on 1050. Working with Radish would cramp anyone's style, R's such a bitter man.
You guys don't like Damon 'cause he's not a local and he brings that east coast sensibility with him. You'd rather have the air full of Radish and the Razor as they slip into senility. I'm switching to 95.7

  16. Need Dibley and Bruno back get rid of Bruce. Kate way too monotone, no energy.

  17. I agree, You are too harsh on Scott. While she may have more testosterone than the avg female she is stuffed in a 10x10 room with one D.Wannabee, and one Uncle Has-Been. Nobody has enough testosterone to compete with those two inflated egos.

  18. To me, Kim Koyle is like the Darya of KPIX. Who is she sleeping with to keep her job? Talentless and fuuuuuugly.

  19. Spot on with your criticism towards Kate Scott. How can the suits at knbr not hear/see that. She's a gimmick with no talent associated with it. Dud, with no personality...enough said.

  20. Picture the KNBR/Cumulus Board Room as if they were on the cover of MAD Magazine - several years ago, when Alfred E. let the chimps and monkeys out in full force. MAD fans that read the 415 will get the jist.

  21. Why is everyone so down on Ms Coyle and Ms Scott?
Kate has a sexy voice and purrs like a kitten when she does her updates. She sounds very alluring and adds some much needed estrogen to the old boys club of KNBR.

Coyle meanwhile is very talented, and a fox to boot! Drop-dead gorgeous, she's easily one of the most beautiful women on local TV. It's a surprise that she hasn't been scooped up by a big station that is scouting for talent out of New York, as Laura Beinke was when she left NBC 11 for the big city.

    Can't you boys play fair?

  22. Bary Tompkins hosting Comcast screams "Ted Griggs is a freind of mine". Barry is so inoffensive and dull. You notice nobody-unlike with Papa-ever teases Barry?. His costing Gergard the Heisman would be at the top of the joke list...and since it seems taboo to EVER kid Barry about that,it just shows what a stiff he must be.

  23. I think the Kate Scott criticism is spot on. I realize this is the SF Bay Area and we have to live in our PC world where Rennell is the ballpark announcer and KNBR wants a woman doing updates, but it just falls flat. I heard Charles Woodsoon doing the updates in the morning a few weeks ago and it was great. Sorry, just an opinion.

  24. I'm glad Charles Woodson had a gig during the NFL Lockout!

  25. Kate Scott is fine. Frankly, she should have a bigger role - Bruce and Kreuger are clones - Scott's perspective is freshening

  27. Just saw Wayne Knight( Neuman of Seinfield) on a 2003 version of Twilight-Zone. He was a Damon Bruce look a like. Same weight, same glasses, same goatee.
    FYI

  28. I just googled 'knibber' to find out what it means and the definition is: A person who consumes an inordinately small amount of alcohol.
Does that mean that Raddy, D Bruce, Pauley Mac and Murph, kate Scott and the mid-day Gigglers are all tee-tollers?

  29. Saw Damon Bruce at the Giants game Sunday. Before the game he was following Larry Baer around like a lost puppy. I sat a few rows in front of Bruce during the game and had to endure his heckling of every Astro as if he thought he was entertaining everyone around him. He wasn't. He kept going to the bar to do shots with the biggest douchebag I have ever seen, some guy named Steffen who sits in the front row, has a braindead blonde on his arm, wears a huge diamond watch and somehow has earned himself a Giants World Series ring. And also had words for every Astros player who stepped into the on deck circle. I never cared for Damon Bruce before and now there's no way I will ever tune in to hear that jackass again.

Oh man, that's funny but the answer to your question is: someone who literally works "under" her.

  31. Based on this article and the comments, it is terribly obvious that this town doesn't know what sports radio and honesty is. Too much Kool Aid drinkers out here who don't like hearing the truth.

  32. "I realize this is the SF Bay Area and we have to live in our PC world where Rennell is the ballpark announcer and KNBR wants a woman doing updates, but it just falls flat."

So what you're saying is you want more middle-aged white guys with goatees that went out of style in 1999? Hooray for blandness! That'll teach them PC people!!

Renell & Amy G. are there to appeal to a broader demo beyond male hardcore sports guys. You can't sell out ballparks here with that demo. So you have to appeal to the casual fan. The soccer moms. And more.

    ReplyDelete
  33. You're unfortunately right about that. Larry Baer has always done the politically expiedient thing, and his hires of Renel and Amy G on Comcast (believe me, Larry made the final decision on that one) prove that. Renel may be a talented radio personality, but her over the top cheeleading as the Giants PA announcer is really too much. Many of the fans I know are really tired of listening to her constant screaming of players' names, or when she calls out: "AND NOW, HERE ARE YOUR SAN FRANCISCOOOOOO GIANTS!!!!"
Why can't she be dignified and announce in a professional manner that most baseball PA announcers used to do? Oh, I forgot, screaming PA announcers are now politically popular, especially if they're women.

And Amy G? Looks like a soccer mom was taken of the sidelines of her kid's game, handed a mike and then told to do 'cutesy' features. Amy really should take speech lessons because her annoying adolescent voice and silly, sometime little girl manner drive longtime Giants fans to distraction.
I know you've got to placate the 'periferal audience" to fill the park, but when you alienate many of your longtime supporters (I'm a longtime season ticket holder) by putting incompetant, annoying people in front of the microphone, aren't you slowly eroding your own product?

And I'm not being sexist. There are plenty of solid women sports reporters (Suzy Kolber, Laura Beinke, Suzan Waldman, among others). It's just when you hire somebody just to fill a quota, instead of hiring them on merit, you're doing a disservice to the public in general.
