And people wonder why the media is detested?
The BART protests by the Anonymous throng have a unique ally: media members themselves.
Case in point, Monday.
While both the platform and entrance to the Civic Center BART area were largely devoid of protesters before a planned late afternoon demonstration, the camera/tape recorder pack were en mass. (OK, later on, a few dozen or more demonstrators actually showed up, hardly a throng)
Talk about aiding and abetting.
Yes, there is a potential story here. Just not then. Nor now for that matter. You would think assignment editors may want to check with the fearless ones to gauge what the scene of the crime looks like before they actually send a crew down, but then again, that requires judgement, of which these guys clearly don't possess.
This abysmal display is indicative of the pack mentality. Even if there isn't a crowd, let's be there just in case! Sorry, but there's a problem there.
This method brings to mind the inane display in some of the Oscar Grant demonstrations when media members outnumbered the protesters.
Get a hold on it, boys and girls.

It's called competition Rich. See, if station A is there in the middle of a story (handed to them on a silver platter I might add) while Assignment Editor from station B is waiting for something to happen, as you suggest, before sending a crew down to report, well---AE from station B is in big doo doo.
ReplyDeleteAlso, re the Oscar Grant demonstrations, which one had the media outnumbering the protesters? Even if 8 stations sent 6 people to cover it each, which is way more than they did, you saying there were never more than 50 demonstrators? Hell, even the pro Mehserle demonstrations had more than that.
I agree that the media is probably in cahoots with the protestors. But NOT because they share the same political view or stance.
ReplyDeleteNo...it's because the media (especially the TV stations)just want to see some action/protests/yelling/arrests, etc.
People have to understand that--other than Fox News--most media types are pretty apolitical: They don't really care about political affiliation. We are an equal-opportunity pursuer of slime/grime/sensationalistic news. GOP or Democrat: We don't care. We just love it when politicians screw up...or in the case of this whole BART thing, we just want action.
