Krukow/Kuiper versus Fosse/GKuiper; Good homers and Bad homers; Sunday quickie

I have grudgingly begun to appreciate Mike Krukow and Duane Kuiper, (Kruk and Kuip). While both admit, and in Kruk's case, freely admit, that they are part of the Giants' amen corner, at least they provide information and are knowledgeable and give the viewers some real insight.

That's not the case with Glenn Kuiper and Ray Fosse, who provide absolutely nothing on A's telecasts. Where the SF class are on game most of the time, Fosse/GKuiper, are vanilla. Dullsville personified. Fosse has been a good company man for almost thirty years, but comes out of the Monte Moore, "we're down by 7 in the ninth and look like shit, but damn, that was a great play by ..." school. If Fosse had Bill King, (or Ken Korach for that matter), he'd be tolerable, but Glenn Kuiper is universally lost and not ready for prime time. There's a story that he only got the gig because of his older brother. I believe that.

  1. Half of the A's announcing team just makes no sense or reason. Why Glenn Kuiper?? who's Vince Cotroneo???..neither have any ties to the A's or the bay area. And it sounds like it. Bland, generic,no opinion personalitys...nothing to stand out. Just what Ken Pries and the A's want?.
And they are eating up years of announcing time telling us nothing. Just this unending flood of very poor to mediocrity in all areas of the Org. since the Fisher family and mobster Lew "The Wolff" took over the joint.

  2. Kruk and Kuip are god awful. They impart little knowledge, are slimy and act like a pouting teenagers when the Giants lose.
Glenn is ultra boring and should not be doing the games. The A's should bring back Pappa, Glenn is only there because of his slime ball brother. Fosse actually has insightful things to say about the game, but his personality isn't strong enough to carry stale Glenn.

  3. Cotroneo is pretty good with Korach; he's very honest, tweets during the broadcast, and is fairly knowledgeable.

Glenn is just mediocre; too often does he cry "LONG FLY BALL" only to be followed by "and the blank fielder makes the play."

Papa was great with Fosse, why was he let go Rich?

  4. the only reason Glenn Kuiper has the gig is because he is Duane's brother ...

  5. i enjoy the A's tv broadcasts. I find I actually like them more than some of the national broadcasts. However, I don't like the radio broadcasts that much, even more so, why do we need pregame (snore) and postgames anyway? Esp. pregame. It's like I want to listen to the A's but have no idea why, so they need to tell me. Well, back to the Raider practice.

  6. At least we don't have Hawk Harrelson...

  7. 1) Krukow likes...loves...the sound of his voice. He overanalyses every pitch. I dont care if it was a slider, I dont care if it took the pitcher 3.2 seconds to deliver the ball to the plate, I don't care if it was a good location pitch. Just keep quiet every once in awhile.
    2) I enjoyed "grab some pine, meat" the first 15,000 times. Now its old...very old.
    3) All I can tell you about Glenn Kuiper is he really enjoys the press box food, I mean REALLY enjoys it. I know because he tells us on every broadcast what he and Ray are eating and how good it is. Oh wait, he missed a pitch there. That's ok, though. He must have had some food in his mouth.

  8. Didn't Dick Stockton call some games in the mid-1990s when the A's had a stint in Vegas? That was horrendous. Joe Angel with the Giants was a little gruff too.

Fosse doesn't do anything for me but it is nice to have at least one guy want to be associated with the As after all these years. So many other former players leave and rather be associated with the Yankees or the Cardinals.

You know, I'll stick up for Vince. I was listening the other day and thinking he really isn't that bad and actually does a good job. Korach is good and part of that is a distinct voice. Vince doesn't have nearly as distinct set of pipes but the guy does a fine job. He's solid.

It is always easy to take shots at Kruk & Kuip but I've heard bigger homers back east. But I like Kuip's laidback style and Kruk does give some great info on the game. People just like to take their shots at the top dogs, I think.

Glenn Kuiper? Yeah, you got me on that one. He is a little vanilla. But he wouldn't be the first guy in this country to get a job on who he knew. I think that happens more often than not with most jobs. He does okay.

Didn't the A's games conflict with Pappa's Raiders gig in the fall? Wasn't that why he left or was released? They wanted him more and he couldn't? After that, he did some work for the Giants but it was part time which was a better fit.

  9. The SF telecasts are unwatchable with all the cutesy fan closeups, waving their babies, handmade signs and dopey animal hats. Barf city.

  10. And don't forget the nepotism with the THIRD Kuiper brother works for CSN in the truck.

  11. Any broadcast with Amy G. is more than Barf city!

  12. g.kuiper definitely could be replaced easily. vasgersian who used to be sd's pxp man and currently works at mlb network is available. better yet too he's an a's fan and that'd def help his stock with a's fans.

if the a's do move to sj within the next 3-4 years, i think they should have a fresh start with the broadcast team personally although i'd definitely would keep korach. fosse i'd promote within the org as he's an a's lifer and would go maybe hire hendu who used to do color for the mariners tv and would like to bring back a fresh new voice the tv broadcast? vasgersian and hendu?

vince on radio doesn't provide a whole lot. maybe the a's can go and hire somebody like bernstein who has pxp experience and is i think a up and coming sports talent here in the bay area, way underutilized. also maybe they could hire greenwald's kid.

papa was good but i don't know if he'd want to do a's pxp anymore on tv. wouldn't be shocked to see him rehired by the w's though as there seems like a fan revot against fitz not only because he's the ultimate w's hr but the backstory on how he got the w's pxp job has a lot of people wanting papa back working alongside barnett again.

  13. Why aren't we talking about the Giants radio booth? Dave Flemming is the only bearable broadcaster there, if not the Bay Area. Jon Miller, sadly to say, is on the decline. He's constantly trying to sound sophisticated when describing the game; i.e: using excess jargons and excess nomilizations. Dudee, just describe the game the way Flemming does: less wordy and more to the point!

  14. Krup, and both Kuipers would be better if they were on KRON 4. I love that station.

  15. Yup, Dick Stockton did play-by-play for the A's when they were on KRON. I wanna say he was one season and done, like the God-awful Tim McCarver was when he did Sunday Giants games on KTVU a few years ago.

Also on KRON, there was a PBP guy who did nothing but a 24/7 impression of Vin Scully. For the life of me, I can't remember his name, but he was definitely a short-timer.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I think Dick Stockton did two or three years for the A's on KRON in the mid-90s--and I'm guessing the Vin Scully impersonater was Ken Wilson...

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yes, Andy, I do believe it was Ken Wilson. Thanks! (And you're right - according to his Wikipedia entry, Dick Stockton covered A's games from '93-'95. Wilson was with the A's '96-'98.)

  18. I really like Ken Korach on the A's radio broadcasts. Vince C. has steadily improved and he makes a real contribution as well. Glen Kuiper, a nice guy, but very boring announcer and doesn't get the best out of Fosse. If you watch the A's classic games on Comcast, with Papa and Fosse you will hear a more engaged Fosse. The A's do a great service to fans by delaying their road radio broadcasts so that they are close to sychronized with Comcast. Thank you Ken Pries. So the viewer can listen to the radio while watching which is my preference. They can't do this for home games as people listen real time at the Colliseum.
Giants - Radio team great. Flemming and Miller so talented and smart. I get a little tired of the Krukow shtick but Giants TV is really good as well.

  19. The Fact that the A's have hired mediocre talents such as Stockton, the forgettable Ken Wilson
(first class prick, and take it from me, I had dealings with the guy, working with him for three months) and Glen Kuiper shows they are not committed to developing a strong bond with the local fans. No wonder the A's are a non-factor in local sports and no one shows up or talks about them except the new eager-beavers (who sound like college kids) on the A's new FM station. And Roxy Bernstein? Talented and underutilized? NOT! He's another first class jerk who has basically taken the Bobby Fitz
route) brown nosing his way to jobs he doesn't . Like most of the guys on the new sports FM station, he sound like a kid still in college!

  20. @2:53pm "Glenn is only there because of his slime ball brother."

Really? What a fucking tool. Go back to tossing Karel's salad for fucking idiot.

  21. Vince Cotroneo's voice and personality couldn't be picked out of a lineup of 10,000 generic announcers across this country.
