Kept Rowell and Riley and Coach, and even Fitz. Apparantly the exiting owner gave all these guys contract extensions when selling, but still.

ReplyDeleteThis is my all-time favorite blog posting. I have never disliked a person in the SF Bay Area media more than Bob Fitzgerald. Lacob and Guber would buy a decade's worth of good will if they fire that clown. It's not just the underhanded and undignified way he got the job (well documented back-stabbing of Greg Papa) or the egregious and unethical anonymous postings on fan site chat boards (can you imagine Bill King EVER doing that??), but it's just his overall ungracious attitude towards fans and anybody who dare criticize the team -- a team by the way, with an almost mythical heritage of futility. I love when the W's are down 30 in the 3rd quarter and it's never bad defense, but that the other team, "is just unconscious tonight with their shooting." And when he turns on a player, like he started to turn on Brandan Wright and Anthony Randolph, after having praised them early on, you know he's being fed bile by his former slave-master Bobby Rowell.

Not long ago I was listening to him debate with a fan who called in with a very measured and intelligent criticism of the Warriors, and at the end, the caller said very graciously that "I guess we just agree to disagree." The moment the call ended, the man known as TC Firehouse said, "You're just too stupid to get it." At that moment, if I had been Joe Lacob listening to that comment while driving in my car, I would have fired that tool bag on the spot. You don't engender much support with your paying customers by having them insulted by your fraud play-by-play guy.
In the end, I feel Lacob and Guber (especially Guber, who is a media mogul) understand how important it is to have the right voice/face of the team on TV. Even though his contrat was extended RIGHT BEFORE the team's sale closed (no doubt a reward for years of service as a lackey to the Cohan/Rowell) you have to believe that Fitzgerald will get canned. It would be so immensely popular with fans that it seems inevitable. And I hope the guy is relegated to calling CYO basketball games in middle school gyms in the central valley. I think he's a real lowlife.
Never liked Fitzgerald. I'm sure when he started he was overcompensating for his lack of experience with arrogance - and it didn't wear well then.

ReplyDeleteActually, Fitzgerald is the classic example of someone who brown nosed his way to the top. One of his former co-workers best described him when he said: "Next to the word diengenuous in the dictionary is a picture of Bob Fitzgard!"
Fitz got his big break when his dad button holed Bob Agnew on the golf course and convinced Agnew to give Fitz a weekend autition. Fitz came to KNBR and immediately set his sites on working fulltime, and he quickly discovered that then GM Tony Salvadore, (who liked to hire people who sucked up to him) was the guy he needed to suck up to. So Fitz worked hard on Salvadore, and when Ralph was tabbed to move to the afternoon show, Fitz was given the job after sealing the deal for the evening show by buying Salvadore a new driver for his golf game, and then presenting it to Tony in front of a bunch of KNNR employees!
Fitz has always been someone who is very inconsistent in his dealing with people. Around KNBR, he consistently abused all of the interns, production folks, and otherwise 'little people' while doing his best not to offend anyone 'who is important' or who could help him out.

His attitude of superiority is a turn-off, plus he'll sell any commercial put in front of him. Using your daughter's car accident for a body shop ad? She must be thrilled every time it airs.
