Padilla-Wright combo makes for good Saturday news on KCBS

Saturday is historically the slowest news day of the week, particularly in the papers, (those that still read them,) but radio is a different story.

I enjoy the Saturday/Sunday anchor combo of  Dave Padilla and Janice Wright on KCBS, the all-news powerhouse that gives out quality content 24/7.

Padilla and Wright are longtime Bay Area news people; in fact, Wright is married to fellow KCBS reporter, Mike Sugarman and Padilla began his SF news career at the old FM outlet, KSOL in the early 80's.

Padilla and Wright provide solid, fluid and engaging news delivery and style in a rapid, but relaxed manner all the while keeping listeners informed on a minute-by-minute basis. In between the usual traffic, sports and weather updates, both have developed an entertaining and informed cohesion that mixes well. And they're both very decent news interviewers too--that's a plus.

It's a winning style that serves KCBS and interested Saturday news radio consumers well. Helping things along is the steady and comforting sports reports by weekend tonsil, Joe Salvatore, and KCBS' traffic reporters, notably, the underrated Ryan Leong, (who's on frequently after Salvatore doing sports Saturday evenings, and Jaclyn Dunn.)

My only gripe, and its small: KCBS' uber-repetitious stories. But, hey, it's Saturday. Nobody's perfect.

  2. I can't remember a Latino-not Latina/female-was last mentioned on the blog. The doors are not wide open even in the great SF bay area.
Sugarman married higher then his station...

  3. Man Rich you must be a mind reader. I was JUST thinking this morning as I was listening to KCBS that I wonder why Rich hasn't given Dave Padilla any props. The KCBS Contra Costa beat reporter and weekend morning anchor is one of the OG's of Bay Area news going back to when he was 107.7 KSOL with his signature, "I'm Dave PAH-dee-YAH" really accentuating each syllable as opposed to the standard "Puhdeyuh". Good post today rich. Speaking of KSOL... what ever happened to Marcos Gutierrez ? One of the best DJ's in the Bay for a while... and while I ramble... I'd like to see a post about Doug Lee (KBLX)- another guy that's been on just about every FM station and genre in the last 25 or so years.

  5. Another classic example of why KCBS still manages to stand tall amid the growing wasteland of a once proud bay area electronic media. As long as KCBS management continues to stay with a winning formula, we'll have at least one professional AM station that won't be falling by the wayside anytime soon!
