KPIX-TV gossip and the problem with Radnich-Bruce; Friday PM rundown

There's a lot of soul-searching going on at 855 Battery/KPIX, where the news director is trying out everyone but the Pope to sit next to Frank Mallicoat in the morning.

He may want to be nice to some of the little people, even his brown-nosers, who are beginning to get annoyed with his "I'm-the-boss" act. When  you treat people like shit, there's karma, baby.

*If, as word continues to flow through the grapevine, Raddy and Bruce, (or perhaps, class-clown, Eric Byrnes), get teamed, there would be a plethora of potential quagmires. To wit:

*Bruce is the conductor and has told many, (me, several times), that he's a one-man band and doesn't like working with co-hosts. He may not have a choice. Maybe it could work, maybe not. I'd imagine they'd have to actually pay him a bit. Everone tends to like money.

*Radnich is in full-mode crisis land. He's reached his peak and no longer does his power extend beyond the 55 Hawthorne mike. He's been tamed since his only ally, Tony Salvadore, was tossed out of the building a few years ago, about the last times his ratings were at the top. He's still relevant, but barely.

Can he co-exist with a younger, cheaper, far more entertaining, if not a tad over-ego lad like Bruce, who actually is a .280 hitter who thinks he's Willie Mays.

We'll see.

  2. Radnich and Bruce have been on vacation this week-is that before the premier of a new show? Possibly Aug 1st to counter 95.7 's new lineup?
I dont know what the ratings are..but 95.7 has to win the 12-3 mark over F&B. The morning to 9am,has to be where Dibbs and Company are making inroads to the munchkins, fratboys and the Wiggles on KNBR. I will listen to who's interesting...and Murphys many tedious interviews with Golf (his hobby I suppose) and Tennis people in the baseball season,is instant change station. Nobody reads those books about those sports. Eric Brynes? the white noise of an electric fan on 95.7 has to more interesting.
Radnich..Barry Bonds talk, incessant plugging of KNBR,the doubling of commercials on his show..you change stations on those and dont come back somedays. I guess by default Tom and Ralph can carry 3-7,as neither is obnoxious and 95.7 has been shuffling hosts in and out. Townsends not bad though. I really dont see Eric Davis as an entertaining host. You have ot have personaluty and Davis is far too jock friendly to be critical, and Eric be funny?..since when?
95.7 is playing hardball better then any other challenge to KNBR...but Rich is right.. if they dont see it the bay area way soon, its just a better effort with no ratings.

  3. Agree with your post Rich
As long as Tony Salvadore was in the building, Radnich was safe. That is no longer the case.
Let the chips fall where they may.

  4. Damon is Willie Mays in a Mets uniform!

  5. Bruce and Radnich..just a recipe of disaster. Those two dont particulary care for each other..and it will come out. Brynes? Knowing Radnich's habits he will play good cop at first.."Eric,you played the game, what was it like,etc"...asking like the schoolboy eager beaver. Not too long though-the REAL Radnich comes out vs Byrnes-I'm older, smarter then you and jaded.
And its the GARY RADNICH SHOW..don't ever forget that Eric.
Everybody at KNBR knows I got it right...

  6. This is good for Bay Area sports radio. Competition is a good thing.

  7. If Uncle Gary and Damon Bruce do a double act, where does that leave Tony Bruno?

  8. Radnich and Brucie? will not work.

If Hammer wants to try something new, try Radnich and Mr Involvement. I don't know if Vern wants to be around Radnich 14 hrs a day or not, but that combo is worth a try because Vern is a cheery and energetic guy and plus does not mind being a sidekick to Radnich.

  9. Mallicoat is competent, and growing on me.

The dunderhead sitting next to him exudes smugness trying to cover for inexperience. Close your eyes and listen. Not good. A robot. Needs more seasoning back in Sacramento.

About the only other bright spot on that set is traffic-woman Elizabeth Wenger. Seriously. She's smart and cute. Bingo.

  10. I think the Mallicoat anchored morning news is just as boring as the Schechner/Hu morning news of the 90s.

I also think Allen Martin sounds like a pompous prick.

  11. Didn't Bruce and Radnich have a falling out about a year ago?

I don't think they would move Brynsie until the season is over. I'd be so happy if they did though. Brynes has the same style as Rod Brooks in that they say the most pedestrian things but make them sound like AMAZING insights! I just can't stand that.

You are implying that Bruce was, at one time, on a level similar to Mays in his prime. Bruce is more like Benny Agbayani in a Mets uniform.

  13. Malicot is copping attitude? At the least, he's got on-air personality- zero. He's tried to pump up his animation this last week, but sometimes, he's imply insufferable. They probably should not have made so much of his bay area roots. He's made some minor errors and showed lak fo knowledge about the bay area during his rough transition. Granted he's been in Boston for years but then why tout him coming home? He demonstrated no interest in what was going on here. If anything Malicot has dragged down the KPIX morning news.

  14. IF Byrnsee moves in with Radnich..who does the evening? You have any ideas Rich who they might promote?
Knowing Hammer,he's trolling the John Birch Society and the tea party rolls to see if he can find a host..

  15. Radnich would work with a flaming pile of shit as long as the checks cleared.

  16. Larry Fitzgerald could take his old spot in the evenings, Sportsphone68. He may also be the one selected to work with Raddy...

  17. FATNICH & BUMSEE are the 2 biggest ASS-CLOWNS on radio...They would be a match made in radio hell,go ahead BALDY,set it up! Yours truly 95.7

  18. I'm tired of reading about the bloated egotist, Gary Radnich, who tries to come across as a nice guy, but who has more enemies in the local media than you can imagine. Raddy loves to insult his fellow broadcasters with little biting comments, and then when called on them gutlessly replies: "hey, I wish just kidding, can't you take a joke!?" The guy has been 'skating' throughout his long stint at KNBR, showing up in the building about five minutes before his show airs and leaveing within seconds after his sign-off at noon. He goes to no games but rather spends his time when he should be covering sports, watching junk TV and then wasting everyone's time by talking about the tripe during his shows. He also seems to think that he knows a lot about the hip-hop culture, and is constantly making references to rap artists that no one cares about or has even heard of. He does this in an effort to gain favor with the 'young demographic." And Raddy always makes sure he's surrounded by toadying, eager-beaver, underpaid , disfunctional young nitwits like 'P-Con' who are unfortunately much too prevalent on today's airwaves. Raddy also loves to have no-talent youngsters around him because he isn't threatened. I hope Kate Scott has the balls to call Raddy and 'P-Con' (what kind of a stupid, asinine nickname is that anyway?) on their vapid frat-boy chatter which demeans women and insults intelligent listeners who want to learn something about sports. I'm sorry, but Raddy, you're shelf life is over! Talk about a guy who is mailing it in!

  19. 9 to noon sure is going to be crowded.

    Radnich
    Bruce
    Kate Scott
    Patrick Connor
Tony Bruno for a half hour

How are they going to find airspace for the drops too???

  20. I guess Bruno said no. D Bruce and Radnich is going to blow up in KNBR's face. I actually like the current lineup of Kate Scott checking Gary and balancing out PCon- constant company line. Are they REALLY this scared of Dibley (cool guy but really ?) and a couple of new guys to the area ?

  21. Rich and Others:
Train wreck was an understatement. I awoke to hear Brian Murphy allude to "something" at 9am.
Trust me Lee Hammer must have had an aneurism to think Radnich and Damon Bruce would work. Bruce's voice volume was LOUD and Radnich kept asking the beautiful, yet Gay Kate Scott "what she thought"....
Bruce who is proud of being tech savvy and Radnich who equals Barbieri at not even liking computers...
The fallout or knee jerk reaction had to have come from the new FM parlay on 95.7 - who ALREADY - since its inception has changed their host lineup from what it was originally.
What? They now have the "The Rise Guys" program, a fixture on morning radio on KHTK (1140 AM) in Sacramento for 12 years. WTFudge?
Then later on 95.7 I heard a lunatic-type "John Lund with Mychael Urban yet it was Lund who was shock-jock-ish and "dissed" or "capped-on" Urban the entire time with Lund professing that "he would run through a brick wall" for guest Jeff Garcia.

Tooooo much to write here, but since Hammer re-hired Tony Rhein and now Larry (the Messenger of Satan) Krueger it must mean that the entire former scent of KNBR under the Agnew and Salvatore rule is completely been fumigated.
Not sure if anyone's noticed or even how to explain it...but last years Marty Lurie's participation on KNBR was "much more" in length and in substance. Again, I can't explain it but Lurie's role has been or is changed since last year.
    Anyone?

Lastly Radnich OPENLY campaigned for "10 minutes" of Bruno-Bruce and himself...today, obviously a shot at Bruno getting the boot!!!

Where did Fitzgerald go? 1050 has Dan Patrick on as of right now???

  22. The lack of comments here regarding KPIX should tell you that nobody cares about CBS5, its talentless reporters or what goes on @ 855 Battery St. For the record, your KGO radio posts are boring as heck.

Why Radnich stirs up such emotional commentary from your readers is beyond me. Who cares THAT much about an AM radio host for christ sake?
