Fosse-Kuiper flub Rangers fan fall tragedy
A's TV broadcasters Ray Fosse and Glenn Kuiper joked while a Texas Rangers fan fell to this death Thursday night in Arlington Stadium.
Even after the video showing the fan falling head first into the pavement, Fosse and Kuiper can be heard laughing on the air.
To be fair, I'm sure Fosse and Kuiper didn't know the severity of the fall at the time, but clearly, the laughter and kidding was completely out of bounds. And another thing: why even make light of something so chilling and so clear to the viewers? Bizarre.
One hopes that both broadcasters apologize tonight for their on-air blunder and that they understand that this was not the time for any giggling.

You can tell that they didn't see it originally and were wondering what the commotion was about. Probably someone whispered to them "some guy fell out of the stands trying to catch a ball".
ReplyDeleteFosse saying "Somebody fell out of the stands in left field...trying to field a baseball got loose" was utter blabber when he didn't have a clue what happened, until he saw the replay, still chuckling along the way.
In their defense, they didn't know that the guy would later die from a heart attack while being rushed to the hospital. I heard he was coherent and the trip to the hospital was for broken bones in his arm. (the heart attack probably caused by a blood clot from the fall however)
There was no flub here. Glenn & Ray laughed as most announcers do when an idiot fan falls reaching for a ball. If you listen to the whole clip you can hear Fosse becoming more concerned saying "I hope he's ok." I would be willing to bet the Rangers announcing team chuckled too.
ReplyDeleteFosse and Kuip are class acts... especially Foss. They didn't know. Had they known, they would have been a lot more somber. You can bet they apologize tonight. Most of the time it is funny when someone flips over the railing near the bullpens reaching for a foul ball- albeit they're on the ground already.
ReplyDeleteUnprofessional. Truly sad.
ReplyDeleteFuck both of them. They suck as announcers and that's why they call A's games. Kuiper got a job because of his brother and I just watched Rose run over Fosse again on youtube...now that's funny.
ReplyDelete9;54AM.......JUST STAY AWAY YOU CLASSLESS JERK.
ReplyDeleteCearly, they didn't know the severity. People fall clumsily often trying to get foul balls. As mentioned, once it looked serious they changed their tone and Fosse showed concern.
Fosse is a class act. Some may not like his style of broadcasting, but the man is a good guy. I'm sure they feel awful and will say something tonight. Easy to comment after the fact, after the injuries come to light, to criticize them.
come on Mr. Media. You are weak. By the way, how can you call yourself Mr. Media with that weak resume you recently listed. Anyway, these two guys did nothing wrong. They had no idea what the outcome of the fall was. Get real. They were not at the end result, they did what most would do, laugh at a guy falling. It is natural. You are weak Mr. Media.
ReplyDeletePersonally I'd prefer you didn't have the video here. I don't think we need to see someone falling to their death.
ReplyDeleteFosse is a nice guy, have met him a few times. However, he is a real bad announcer/color guy/whatever. Professionally I feel sorry for him, yeah he does the A's, it isn't like he has a huge, critical audience. Nice guy though.
ReplyDeleteThey had no idea it was a 20 foot fall, no idea the fan was hurt. I didn't hear endless braying and snorting. I heard a few murmured laughs like whenever a fan falls trying to catch a foul ball and Kuiper saying I hope he's OK.
ReplyDelete"..., but clearly, the laughter and kidding was completely out of bounds." You make it sound like they were laughing maniacally.
You're kind of an asshole, Rich Lieberman.
Fosse knows baseball, and he does a great job on color inside the foul lines. But he fell short on recognizing the obvious severity of that head first fall. He was a jock, not a journalist in training and that's just what you get -- a PhD in baseball science, and an "F" in journalism and recognizing physical trauma outside the field.
ReplyDeleteYes, THEY DID correct themselves after the piece of video you filmed. It did eat at their conscience, and it ate at everyone's conscience on both the A's and the Rangers. And it's not just the A's bullpen or the Rangers iconic president. The A's manager was very somber afterwards. And a certain ex-President & ex-First Lady were in attendance, so don't be surprised if the firefighter's family sees Secret Service at the memorial service. Everybody in an Oakland & Texas uniform will want to put this obvious trauma behind them.
ReplyDeleteThink before you vent, Rich. That way, you can create your own critical precedence. Unfortunately, you're falling into the trap that most pundits, left & right, have already (and many willingly) fall into - all air, no substance or proof (kind of like the fat mouth in Florida who continues to be undeservingly treated like a king within his beloved political party). Back it up, man.
Bush was in attendance and he didn't do anything?!
ReplyDeleteJust like Katrina!
I know you need as many hits as you can get to your blog but can you please consider removing the video from this post. Its disturbing and completely disrespectful to the family of the departed. Hopefully you find the decency to remove it. I understand there's always a way to view the video via other outlets but by removing it from your site will show a lot of class on your behalf. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that this turd leaves up the video shows what a punk asshole he is.
ReplyDeleteSo just to recap, a couple of baseball announcers don't immediately grasp the severity of the accident, much of which is obscured from their view, while you have time to consider the ramifications before posting the video that the family and Nolan Ryan have asked not be shown again. Who's the classless one again?
ReplyDeleteif you have class remove the video
ReplyDeleteC'mon Rich. They had no idea what happened. Who knew? Easy cheap shot for you.
ReplyDeleteI was expecting worse. Then I watched it. I didn't hear anything terrible on their part. The chuckling wasn't that bad. Something many do when we see something that could be funny until we immediately wonder if that person is okay. And I did hear the concern in their voices.
ReplyDeleteI think you're off target with this one, Rich. I feel for the guy and his family and don't feel like pointing fingers.
Fantastic point about the fact that the family has asked to not show the video around. I belive that Fosse and Kuiper are good people, and are both men who have strong family values. If they had known the severity of the incident they would have been somber in their comments.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that the person who runs this blog continues to leave the video in place completely disrespecting the family's wishes proves who is without class in this discussion.
As a bay area sportsfan, I will look for the video to be removed and the apology to be forthcoming. If not, I shall not visit this page again.
Don't be so driven for hits that you allow the greenback to cloud your judgement Mr Lieberman...drop the video, and own up to the fact that you're attempting to assasinate the character of two very respectable men.
