Welcome to the World of 'Floaters'; Local Stations hire Green, (cheap) Interns until they fade away

They call them "floaters." They're cheap, wide-eyed, mostly female, inexperienced green interns, (yes, interns,) who will work for a pittance, work the hell out in most cases until they get exhausted for around eight months and then move on to another market.

That's the trendy business model in most local TV news markets, from here, (market #6) all the way to Tulsa, Trenton, and beyond.

Wonder what the hell is going on at, KPIX, for example? Notice the older talent has been shown the door? Remember John Kessler, John Lobertini, Bill Schekner, and Sydnie Kohara? Need I say more?

They all have a lot in common. They've been deemed too "expensive" by corporate and there's plenty of other younger, prettier, cheaper, and eager beavers ready to invade their seats, all with less than expansive resumes and just barely qualified to read the teleprompter.

Said a local media source:

It's pretty bad right now. Not sure how KRON/Young is retaining quality people like Catherine Heenan, Pam Moore, and Radnich, although a lot of their own, in-house floaters are lame.

Lots of morning news bimbos with big boobs and cleavage(no complaints but still-it panders) right now in the Bay Area. The smug KPIX Blondie weather gal is kind of hilarious.

Don't expect this phenomena to go away anytime soon as the economy has once again showed increasing signs of another turn to stagnation. That translates into potential decrease of advertising revenue for local TV.

And no station, no outlet, no ratings-leaders are immune. And its not just happening here--a quick glance at some of the bigger stations in the big markets has seen some of the biggest turnover. The floaters will enjoy a virtual vagabond of available positions across the local media landscape.

And news directors and GM's, already burdened by the strenuous bottom-line mentality that permeates the entire industry, have mucho floaters to choose from.

Attention: blond, big-boob readers with white teeth and "gee-whiz" euphoria: plenty of gigs available. Talk to your local news leader.

  1. Why don't the viewers speak up? Don't they care if they get the news from a "greenie" with no gravitas, no credibility?

  2. It's pretty bad when you train for a career that peaks at age 27.

  3. I have spoken up myself by emailing the Vice-President of News at KPIX, to no avail, obviously. As for Blonde Kristy Siefken, she seems to have transferred over to News, as she is being seen as a news reporter lately, and not doing weather. They have hired another bimbo, Erika Martin. She is actually very good, almost too good, as she never pauses between sentences. Also, her face is botoxed to death, as her eyebrows never move. She is totally hot though, so when I turn over to catch the news, she is nice to drool over...

  4. I think that as you've hammered the local stations on the Aryian-look, woman weathertalkers..they have added some color. Erika Martin is black? mixed? And some others on 7 and 5 too..still a majority of blonds, they will always dominate news. When a few dollar bottle of blond hair color is the difference between a being hired or ignored...
And once again, why I'm a ch.7 man. Plenty of older experienced people, they even wear matching suits. That's a news team.

  6. Did anyone see Jackie Bennett do the weather last night? Unbelievable knockers. She was wearing a skin tight purple dress with a shiny belt on. No complaints from me but my spouse screamed: WTF IS SHE WEARING!?!?
