95.7 and the 'Dibber', (Maybe it is the End of the World)

I've heard the news.

I'm not a big DD fan as you all know.

This is a stupid move. Act of desperation really, going after Knibber's version of Daffy Duck.

Who knows, maybe he has pictures. Good for Daffey, he's managed to escape the old man from 9-Noon, you know? the mail-it-in-guy.

I don't know what took a bigger hit: knibber's only knib....or the "Bay Area's only FM sports station."

Maybe IT is the end of the world.

  1. So much for taking the day off huh Rich?
Look, Dan Dibley is not exactly Howard Cosell, but I don’t understand your foaming at the mouth dislike of the guy. He’s a solid sports desk guy and he does a fine job with traffic, plus all the other high school sports he covers, plus the Earthquakes sidelines. Also he seems to be a genuinely nice, harmless guy (I see him in Montclair from time to time with his kids). Why so much animosity towards him? If anything this must be a blow to Radunich’s ego. He must be doubting himself. He was such a DD booster and DD jumped ship. Congrats to the Dibley!

  2. Hmm. I don't know about this one, but who knows, he might grow out of the annoying sidekick vibe. He is local, so that's a good thing.

  3. Still got P-con - so have him disagree with everything Uncle G says and nobody will know the difference.

  4. Maybe he will be allowed to perform in his own skin and not shill for Raddy. You may end up liking him Rich.
Still think that unless 95.7 gets a "name", they are doomed.

  5. Cut the guy a break. He is a hard working, sports-loving guy who is actually doing what he loves, as opposed to others in this business who are just paid to pretend they care (a-la mailing it in guy). Time will tell if he's going to be a bay area sports radio staple or swept back to sidekick status. I'm willing to wait instead of draw a conclusion out of the gate as you seem to have done. He can't be any worse than Byrnes, now can he? Best of luck, Dan.

  6. They never announced it...but it was strange that Dibs was harder edged in taking a stand today on Radnich's usual out there blanket opinions.
For all that "Good friends" talk between those two,you know Dibs was tired of that schtick ,metering lights, and "I made you" from Radnich. And now he can talk sports..not hip hoppity crap.
I like that WOLF is agressive-its like I'm their GM and they also saw how KTRB just rolled over vs KNBR last year.
Dibs maybe need a few remedial speech lessons, and that idoltry of Zito he has is nutty loyalty for just a few tweets Zito tosses him.
But,IF Dibs is like I think HE CAN BE..I would listen to him over Bruce and F&B..no doubt at all vs Brenyzee it's just no contest against that steroid liar.
Btw,If he unloads on Radnich at WOLF the way he did at KNBR hosting at Christmas time..we are in for some great inside storys.

  8. Never liked his squeaky weasely sound - always seemed out of place in sports and very annoying. If thats the best this new sports station can do, it's sad.

  9. DD comes off as very smug and arrogant. I think he has good potential his lisp has gotten better over the years, and he works had SJ Giants etc.

Did Radnich say anything on air about it? DD probably feels he's past the sidekick stage. Probably a good move for him and his career. Good bye over ego'd little Ginger.

  10. What the heck are guys talkin about? The DD? The Dibbler. The knibbler. The fibbler. WTF?

  11. Agreed. He had to outgrow the annoying side kick vibe... at times he came across as a stooge for Radnich. If he develops his own style... who knows what type of radio personality he could turn into... also how long would he have to wait in line at KNBR...worth the risk.

  12. My guess is that Radnich is happy for Dibs. Radnich knows the business, and knows that Dibs' career goal was not to do traffic and be his sidekick. I'm guessing at some point, Radnich will mention Dibs. This is a move up for Dibs (assuming he will have more air time, or actually host), and even if the station changes format in a year, he'll have that on his resume.

As for 95.7- they need to get something going, and quickly. Tuned into their morning show the other day for approx. 15 minutes: All I heard about was the fact that the single guy had sex over the weekend, and the married guy (Monti?) was playfully ticked that he didn't get a phone call from him telling him about it. At that point, I almost missed Mac's stupid sound drops and songs. Almost, but not quite.

I have also caught several segments of Scott Jackson mid-morning. Seems nice, knows sports, but deadly dull. I have heard him give out the phone #, but never take a phone call. Radnich has nothing to worry about head-to head. Criticize Radnich all you want about a 60 year old guy talking hip-hop, etc. He always has plenty of callers, which means he has people listening. And when he wants to get serious about sports, he does know his stuff- unlike Barbieri.

People criticize Radnich for 'mailing it in'. Barbieri is the one that does that. Outside of the Giants, 49'ers, and the Sharks come playoff time, he doesn't watch sports. Too often, callers will ask/comment about something, and Ralph's response is "I didn't see it", or "I don't know." Radnich is on top of everything, and yes, he can break down the A's bullpen, and would regularly, if he thought enough people were listening for that reason.

95.7 needs to bring in nationally syndicated shows, in my opinion, to make it work. Dan Patrick does a GREAT job with his national show. But Monti and whomever, Scott Jackson- they're not going to cut it, in my opinion.

  13. Instead of a series of reactions to a piece of news, can we first get a statement laying out what you're talking about?
Obviously I pieced together that Dan Dibley got a job at 95.7FM and is leaving KNBR, but how about starting the piece off with the news/facts instead of assuming everyone knows it happened.

  14. dibley is a solid move but nothing huge. don't know where in the lineup he could fit but how about letting him get the afternoon slot after townsend so we can finally rid ourselves from rob/arnie. i think dibley would need some sort of cohost with him to do a show.

agreed that 95.7 needs to get a big name in the lineup. i think title is a must although he isn't the "big name" that could make a dent in the bay area sports radio industry.

the only two big names that i think would be feasable would beto land either bruce or krueger. think getting krueger would be easier although bruce's deal is supposedly almost up with the knibber.

  15. Must respectfully disagree with DodgerDog what they need is a big name and strong locally based programming with compelling hosts. The canned, nationally syndicated shoes are all over the dial it just goes to show how radio has gone to the lowest common denominator. Krueger and or Bruce would be very solid. 95.7 needs to present a content based alternative to KNBR that's different.

    ReplyDelete
  16. what nationally syndicated programming can they get? all the big names are with 1050 right now. rome from 9-12, bruno from 7-10, and i guess you can mention patrick whos show is replayed at night on 1050.

and really i think only somebody like rome who has the biggest sports syndicated show in the country is the only one worth going after. but i doubt knbr is gonna let rome go, we don't even know if they have a contract with his show and if there would be a bidding war if his show were to come available.

agreed 95.7 needs to go after local hosts who can take phone calls. tittle would be a nice start since he takes calls thru out his now 3 hour show, previously 2 hour show, for 860 for months now. bruce would be a good get, certainly would be a bigger name to steal from the knibber than dibley. don't know how likely bruce would make the move to 95.7 though. would he trade his job on 1050 and his guest spots on chronicle live to land a job as possibly a afternoon host on 95.7? certainly salary/pay will determine where he will end up in the long term in this area.

krueger i don't know what he's doing now. he was doing some short 2-3 minute promos for 860 last year but haven't heard him since so i'm guessing he's still in the bay area. he used to cohost with townsend for his sportsbyline show at night but moved to satellite, was fired a few years ago but don't know what he does now. he'd certainly bring in a much high profile local flavor to 95.7

  17. Well, on the bright side, at least it makes Radnich's show a little more bearable to listen to.

  18. Of course 95.7 needs more help-so does KNBR!.
Dibly is a coup-no doubt. He was an up and coming Mr .KNBR until Hammer just totally by passed him for steroid juicer Byrnes. I think, that cemented "I'm never going anyplace here"..loyalty means nothing at KNBR. It's a threat there.
95.7? Monty needs to ease up-he sounds like Pauly on KNBR..that type. Scott Jackson needs a side kick-Dibs?
And,I honestly listen to who's best..and thats why 95.7 has gotten a large amount of my sports time. I have no interest in F&B's -at all. D.Bruce's lobotomy has ruined his show. Radnich still holds court..but I will change when he goes off on hip hop or hockey talk to the WOLF. And often forget to comeback. I can see another personality overtaking Radnich...they are out there.
Maybe..Ray Ratto? I think he would be what WOLF needs 9-12 or 1. Think about it Mr. wolf g.m.

  19. KNBR is the "Sports Leader" because they are the least Mediocre of the other Mediocre Sports competitors...First, lets acknowledge that NO ONE at any of these stations has any Ideas...You listen to the talk shows so you can get to the Giants and A's. The owners of these Over Leveraged stations need a place to stuff commercials to pay off the stock holders and the bankers. KNBR's Staff is Truly Shit...Lispers, Morons, Knuckle Dragges, AND NOT So Smart Asses... Who think they are brilliant because no one running the place knows or cares, or is even capable of judging what is actually GOOD. This bunch is so Inbred It's the Radio Version of the Movie Deliverance. Bottom line...The are so Bad, They don't even know they are BAD.

  20. Dan Dibbley's a boob

  21. I agree with the first comment. Dan is good at the desk, knows sports, has a sharp wit and is quick with a comeback, cutting down GR.

Most likely the move was made to no longer hear:
    "For the nine hundreth time"
"Dan, have I told you this?"
    "I had a mother and a father"
"I was in bed with my wife last night"
"I paid for my tickets, Ralph was comped"

Well done DD, good luck to you.

  22. I laugh. First you have the frustrated media critic/host, then his minions. Neither group
has really any understanding of the fine
points. For instance, the dolt who thinks if a host gets a lot of calls, they have a lot of listeners. you FAIL. The callers mean squat compared to listeners. 99 percent of listeners never call. DD is a non entity who barely gets on the radar, he was hired for his contacts & rolodex.

Girls: I have a suggestion you all seem to have too much time on your hands worrying about this mundane shit, and thinking you're on the inside. Get another hobby.

  24. Point taken. But based on an incorrect assumption on your part.I work in the business, and know the players. If you want to discuss the biz better come with the facts or shut the hell up. Girls, if you think this kind of stuff is big, better put your seat belts on,because your there will be lots of CHANGES on multiple frequencies soon. Don't get your panties in a bunch.

  25. dibley sucks...good riddance to him as now i can listen to Radnich again - especially the greatest half hour in radio with Tony Bruno!!

dibleys problem is Radnich started blowing smoke up his ass and dribley believed every word he said...he's got the ego of potus and like potus, no accomplishments in the real world...

now if they rid of the dimwit polly mac(want a cracker polly?), i might even listen to the morning show again...

as for Larry Krueger, there's a podcast on the KNBR site of an interview Byrnes did with him back in late March and apparently Krueger is in the real estate business, prob an agent i would guess...
