Townsend starts 1-4 PM New Talk Show on 95.7; Earthquake Anniv. Overkill; Gary Plummer; Monday Rundown

*Chris Townsend will begin a M-F weekday talk show on the new 'Sports Radio' 95.7 FM, (1-4 PM) beginning Monday, (today.) Of course, heavy concentration will take place on the A's and local sports in general.

Townsend had a busy weekend, particularly Friday afternoon, when he was told by station officials to prepare for a 4 PM launch directly into the expanded pre-game show for A's baseball. Townsend managed to pull it off and, all in all, everything sounded great. Most notably, the twenty or so minutes with A's lead pbp guy, Ken Korach.

*The 105th anniversary of the great SF quake. OK, so yes, another massive amount of pub for a big local story, but the lead? Please. In 2006, the 100-year anniv. was deserving of the huge play it got from all the outlets, but why so much attention this year? The tie-in with the Japan quake seems the connection here and by golly, isn't that stretching it a bit?

KGO, KCBS and KTVU all lead with the goings-on at the early-morning gathering spot on Market St.---must be the beginning of a slow news day. (And now, I'm prepared to get the usual e-mails complaining that this is a 'huge' event and that I don't know the significance of that April day in 1906--I don't. I only see the grainy footage and fires--I'm sure it was a tough day and all but I think the '06 quake anniv. only gets real traction here. Sorry, I'm lost, sue me.)

*Gary Plummer controversy in a nutshell: if you're going to take shots at the hand that feeds you, (even justifiably,) be sure you have no skeletons in the closet, (or potential embarrassing explicit talk about your Johnson.)

*Hats off to Randy Hahn and Drew Remenda for their outstanding work on Comcast during the opening round of the NHL Playoffs. Here's hoping for a long Sharks journey into Stanley Cupville.

  2. Yeah sure,Like Eric Davis never did kinky things? Those phone numbers didn't interest Eric?..maybe he can fill in the details since he WAS THERE at the time.

  3. Townsend is booooring....now, if they hired Larry Krueger over there and he starts talking Giants baseball, then they'll get half the bay area Giants fans listening in no time...of course that won't happen though... :(

  4. OOOF the station is getting slammed on their facebook page. I am at work so I cannot listen but the reaction does not seem good so far :(

  5. Is Townsend really a Douche in person? Sounds like one. I've met him and from the things I heard about him when at Nibber he is. However, he would be an upgrade there over Chuckles et al.

95.7 bring in Krueger and D Bruce...

  6. Townsend isnt Mr.Excitement. Another hired because of loyalty. I knew we were all dreaming with lists of great sports hosts. And beside, its the A's involved. No great nationwide hunt for a great sports host to anchor the new format. The A's do everything from the D list.

  7. funny how their facebook comments are all complaining about too much Giants talk..is it just possible more people are interested in the Giants than the A's??? I am waiting for the conspiracy theories that knbr and the giants are behind this whole thing to somehow screw the A's

  8. Agree with your Plumber post Rich. Be carefull what you say online or over the broadcast air.
Good hire for 95.7 with Townsend.
Now if they would only bring in Larry Krueger that would be better.

  9. When the A's flagship station doesn't even bother to talk about the A's, it's time to go.

This falls right in line with their Comcast ratings and game attendance. They just don't have a large fanbase, and they seem to be the last people to understand this very obvious fact.

  10. It's the first day for crying out loud. The national guys who are piped in are just temporary until the local talent can be hired. The switch to Sports just happened 72 hours ago. Give Entercom a little credit for knowing how to program a sports station.

  11. Giant fans need to get over themselves. I know it may come as a suprise, but there are people who could care less about your team and are tired of having propaganda shoved down their throat.
Give the station time. knbr has been with the same format for years and they still only really have one good show.

  12. I caught the Rob and Arny show about 4pm of the Wolf-they were giving it to the shrine called ATT park as "An amusement park" and "Worst of the new parks"
They should go a little easier on non Giants callers...that has Fitz and Brooks attitude. But hearing the KNBR deitys getting warned is nice to hear.
Cant wait until they get to Warrior and 49 talk.

  14. Bring back Krueger. Racist Alou is gone now. That guy lived in this country for 40+ years and never could speak clear English.. terrible...

  15. In 2 weeks most of these hosts won't be on the station, they need time to hire some people. I got a kick out of one of the interns from KNBR posting all over the 95.7 facebook page. I wonder if Lee Hammer directed him to do it our he took it upon himself?

  16. LOL! The noon guy on WOLF just said he hated-Notre Dame,an Enron of colleges he said-more or less.
WOLF-is doing what KTRB never did-take it to the enemy,do what's been done unto the eastbay by KNBR.
And why not? go after them for what KNBR/COMCAST have made of the media-sheep.

  17. Re: quake anniversary coverage...

You're a morning show producer/assignment editor. A gathering marking an event that forever changed San Francisco is taking place DURING your morning show, which is a rarity. OF COURSE you're going to cover it. It's a no-brainer. Good pictures, good sound... you'd be an idiot NOT to cover it.
