NBC Bay Area to use Comcast Sports Content--We're supposed to be happy? (And surprised?)

*NBC Bay Area (KNTV-11) will begin using Comcast SportsNet Bay Area to provide content on its 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts. Lovely. Can't wait. The further marginalization of the local sports/newscast. We're supposed to be happy with this "evolutionary" move, but in reality, its just a further erosion of that age-old relic called "live and local."

As I've stated before on this site: Comcast SportsNet Bay Area: a boatload of corporate cash that funds splashy state-of-art studios and high-def monitors along with local pick-up of the Giants, Warriors, and Sharks and A's.

Most of their talent are fairly robotic and uninspiring. They are more a content provider rather than an original content producer. They have charted a rather prolific and methodical, mostly antiseptic approach to bringing Bay Area sports cable viewers, (and other markets) coverage. It's not the least bit original nor enlightening. They keep it simple which is consistent with their business model. Safe and sanitized.

Outside of a few documentaries and one nightly snooze fest, they don't bring anything new or inspiring to the table. Their reliance on younger, cheaper, blonder female "reporters" happy as all get-go to be in the 4th biggest market is quite apparent on a daily basis.

That's not to suggest anything sinister. Its more like keeping the corporate bosses happy in Philadelphia; that's the only thing that counts these days.

  1. no, not the "corporate bosses" that are the problem, more likely its just the economic realities of media these days...the aren't unlimited funds for a JetCopter here or 500 useless dem staffers at the newspaper there...

  2. Good move by KNTV. Their viewers will benefit from the far larger Comcast resources as their local sports department keeps getting smaller.
Revenue from local news broadcasts is no longer enough to support a staff large enough to cover our local area to the extent that Comcast already is, especially when local sports is only alotted 2-3 minutes of airtime per broadcast.
KGO-7 will eventually have their sports via ESPN as well.

  4. Rich,
NBC11 could save money by just using the news ticker at the bottom of the screen.

  5. Nobody is going to prefer KNTV sports over the next channel. Dave Benz just doesnt deserve to be on multi channels as he channels Ted Koppel or Scott Reise who often comes across as another Chris Farley when he hosts shows.
Ted Griggs must feel some shame when he see's what he does to real sports journalism. What do you mean, he laughs all the way to the bank?

  6. My mistake, the chris Farley like anchor is another minor CSN sports guy. Couldnt find his name on the CSN site. He might not be with them any longer.

  7. Now I can see Mindy, Amy G, Kate and Jaymee in HD as I can get NBC11 OTA.

  9. Not that I can remember the last time a local news station's sports department did an investigation of something or broke a big story - but considering Comcast's financial ties to the local pro sports teams, I wouldn't expect any from KNTV. That said, given the industry, it will save them money and probably result in a better product than the station would have otherwise.
And it isn't like the other stations don't have their own financial relationships with the various teams.

  10. Comcast did a special on woman reporters in sports. Jaymee Sire only added that she doesnt get much hostility because "She's pretty" on her Facebook page. But,she never did explain why she was hired by Comcast. We know why. She's pretty!
